I have tried searching and trying several of the offerings. The one I liked that worked real well on my SG Tablet 7" was this one Android Wifi Tether
The problem with this one is when I turn off the tether, and go back to wifi, I have to power reset to get the wifi to work again.
I know, I tried switching wifi off/on in the manager, but no luck.
So who has found a functional wifi tether. My gNote is rooted.
Really.?

What's wrong with the built in tether app that you enable/disable from settings > wireless & network > tethering & portable hotspot ? That one seems to work great for me.

Do you know if that is undetectable if you have the tethering manager froze? Maybe it is I never thought to try it.

That sux. Here in Canada they have been allowing tethering without paying extra.
Of course that could change :/
No idea if it's detectable or not.

Not sure if it is, but will let you know. I just rooted mine last night and deleted the tetheringmanager.apk. I used the WiFi Hotspot this morning to connect my laptop for about 30 minutes. Have not received any "Cease and Desist" notifications as of yet.
So has AT&T caught anyone yet? I carry an iPhone 4 and sometimes a TouchPad with me so I would like to be able to tether without paying extra. I have a grandfathered "unlimited" plan and I don't see why AT&T can't allow me to tether if I never go over their "unlimited" 3GB cap...
You won't get caught unless you are using ridiculous amounts of data. Its crazy how they even try to charge you $50 a month for a 5GB data plan and "THE ABILITY" to tether off your "OWN" data plan lol. The guy offered me that plan when i got my Note. I chuckled and said common man are you serious? It looked confused. AT&T for ya lol.

I am on the grandfathered unlimited plan. I was told it was 5gb before any throttling of speeds. I was extensively tethering on my LG eXpo and never contacted or 'offered' to switch to a new plan. Did a couple of times with my Thrill and same result. Still nothing from yesterday's wifi hotspot trial. Have already ate up 1gb since acquiring this phone on SAturday. (lot of speed tests and loading of apps) so going tk take it easy and use wifi for a while. Max i ever used was 2.5 gb with the eXpo, so that is probably why i was never 'caught'.

I used to tether my iPhone 4 a lot but haven't done it in over 6 months so I didn't know if they were any better at detecting tethering since all of those "5%" of users have been getting throttling messages.

check out Barnacle, i used to use it and it keeps track of how much data you have used per session and whos connected to your hotspot.. real easy to use

Probably not. I wouldnt be surprised if they open up the flood gates to tethering now that they have effectively killed unlimited data. If I were AT&T I would encourage tethering to rack up more fees! (Perhaps they just want to make up for it up front, who knows!)
I do moderate tethering and dont have any nastygrams in my inbox yet.

Try PDANet
PDANet works great USB from stock ATT Note to laptop. Laptop does not have bluetooth. Must have PDANet on both laptop and Note. Totally free.
Sent from laptop via 4G data from ATT stock Note.
Yes, ATT can detect tethering very easily. Do they care with the new throttling policy in place? I don't think so. ATT policy is "If you are in the top 5% of data users in your coverage area, your data speed will be throttled."
I fought the good fight with ATT (5 telephone calls) to keep my unlimited data plan so I could continue receiving data for free (abeit at a slower speed) if I ever went into the "top 5%".
I tethered my jail-broken iphone for past 2 years. Tethered data to laptop only when in my RV. Never went over 1 gb data used in billing period. Never got nasty email.
Of course, with huge screen of Note (unlike iphone) I probably won't feel the need to tether to laptop too much anymore.

Just tried FoxFi after posting about USB PdaNet. Works great as a WiFi hot spot.
Sent by ATT 4g data from laptop using WiFi hot spot created by FoxFi on stock note.
I'm a bad ass over here
I use about 3GB - 4.5GB per month on unlimited data plan. The only texts I've gotten from AT&T was the "Top 5% of users" text. Other than that, nothing on the tethering.
I have a rooted phone with the tetheringmanager.apk uninstalled. Does anyone know if there is a way to add a shortcut to the menu item 'Settings>Wireless and Network>Tethering and portable hotspot'?
It is a slight, but noticeable pain to have to navigate there every time I feel like hopping on my laptop to watch netflix.
Foxfi is recommended... Don't need to be rooted either.... Works great....

Thanks for the reply's guys. I actually do have EZ-Tether and use it with my laptop when necessary. But I also need a wireless option when I pass internet connectivity to an RTK GPS survey controller from my work supplied DINC2. Since its a work phone, rooting/romming isn't an available option.
The old hack method let me run under the radar on several fronts if you know what I mean. I just wanted to find out if the old hack was still available before trading up to the Inc4G.
:good:
looks like the FCC just ruled that they can't charge for tethering so maybe you can just use the built in option.

No (according to the article I read) Verizon also agreed not charge for tethering. The article however said that this would only apply to 4G non-unlimited plans which is the case now anyways I believe. I did not see anything that specifically said they can't charge it for unlimited or 3g accounts but I guess they prob still will
it's so weird actually using the verizon mobile hotspot lol.

me too at first, did you get rid of the unlimteed data, and on a shared everything?
if so u get the free mobile data, i just opened it and pressed it and it worked.
it didnt at first but that was because initially i kept my unlimted plan (when i didnt want to) and the guy screwed up (good thing I happened to have called CS)
it saves our family of 4 smart phones 80$ a MONTH!!!
I don't ever need unlimited, I pay for wifi at my house so I take advantage of that and the batt savings.
only use 4g when needed.
I finally moved the cable modem into my room the wifi crappy netgear wifi thing for my desktop blows!
if for vista, i upgraded to wiindows 7, that was a fiasco, then i upgrade my comp from 2GB RAM to 6.5GB and apparaently anything over $GB the wifi wont work.
took me all day of google searching to find the hacked code.
i even to this day have to start my computer a special way to disable signature something to get the wifi to work, happy dont have to do that crap anymore. lol

The FoxFi with proxy addon works well, but it it's limited to http/https protocols, and your device that you are tethering must have an option to set up proxy settings. If you need other protocols, you will need a USB tether option.

So far I've gotten Open Garden to work between my incredible 4g, my Asus EeePC, and my Toshiba thrive tablet. It's a pretty cool app, and it's evolving. There are limitations.
Currently it uses Bluetooth, and they are planning on supporting WiFi. If your using it on a PC it only works with the browser (I've used it with Firefox). When first connecting my Asus to my Incredible it wasn't taking. I messed around with it, and added my tablet and then they all connected. After the first connection it now automatically connects if the app is running on both devices.

Tried the old hack as soon as I got the phone. Unfortunately, it does not work.
Connectify is another option (if you have the right hardware), never gave me a bsod. People probably get it because they have the wrong hardware. I had the right hardware and had to do this when I had a Rooted Motorola Droid/Milestone (which is in the garbage since it broke), cause it's wifi tether was ad-hoc only. (Still never failed me)

I am traveling and am in an area with fantastic 4G coverage. The other day I was on the phone doing an conference call and had my phone tethered to my laptop. As soon as my call connected I last all internet coverage as far as the tethering is concerned. As soon as my call ended my data kicked back in. What gives? It used to work, why does it not anymore?
Sounds like some dirty ploy on VZW 's end to restrict tethering.

You know this is a good point. I am using the widget bypass and with the recent update for the phone you get prompted about a subscription error. Conference call that I was on at this time was called into one phone listening to others in the same room over speaker. I don't think this is the case.
Been on the phone for a half hour and it's working perfect. Weird!
Necro-thread! But, I realized the other day that I am having the same issue as the OP. I used to be able to continue surfing over my 4G hotspot while also talking on the phone. Somewhere along the way, the capability has stopped working. I have Unlimited Data and use FoxFi to enable tethering. And, like I said, this used to work. I've had my S4 since May, 2013, but I'm not sure when, during all that time, it stopped.
It really come to the fore today because a friend told me about Verizon Advanced Calling and I logged into my account to enable that. I noticed two things. One, the S4 is not a "compatible device", even though Samsung says the phone supports VoLTE. And, two, one of the features that VZW touts for Adanced Calling is being able to do simultaneous voice and data over 4G LTE.
This is all starting to make me think my simultaneous voice and data went away at some point when Verizon turned off the capability via a phone firmware update or something. Because, of course, they want me to buy a new phone - ideally while also giving up Unlimited Data.
That also makes me thing I might be able to "fix" my phone using SS and a ROM and maybe an Xposed module. But anyway....
Can anybody shed any light on this? I don't do it that often (talk on the phone while I'm tethered), but when I do want to do it, it dang sure sucks that it doesn't work any more!
---------- Post added at 12:06 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:57 AM ----------
Okay, now I really don't know what the deal is. I just tested it, sitting in my office. and, today, it's working. I have a strong 4G signal here. I called my desk phone and answered and set the handset down. I turned on FoxFi, then connected to my hotspot with my tablet. While the voice call was still connected, I had no trouble running SpeedTest on my tablet and getting 40 Mbps download.
Hmmm.... Maybe not working the other day is some other problem with my phone....
Okay, never mind...
I have a rooted (via this wonderful site) HTC rezound on a grandfathered unlimited Verizon plan. As soon as I was rooted I installed the only wifi tether that I could get to work. After a few months of wonderfully excessive data usage both via tether and phone use, I can no longer maintain a connection to the internet if i use a wireless tether. I can stay connected with a USB tether.
Starting from a fresh boot the phone has a great 4G connection with speed tests over 20mbps. Once I start the wireless tether, I can connect a device and download no more than a few mb of data before the connection is lost. The phone continues to say that I have a great connection to the tower, but I can not connect to the internet via the tether or any app on my my phone. Speed test apps say there is "no server connection" but that I am on the Verizon network. The only way to get the server connection back is to reboot the phone. I have found that I can use Foxfi USB tether to connect a device without losing a server connection, but what good is that to multiple devices?
Is it possible that Verizon can tell that I am wirelessly tethering and is blocking my server connection? It seems like a stretch, seeing as Foxfi USB works (wireless does not), but I would not be surprised. And if they are doing this, wouldn't that be illegal according to the "Open Access Rule" they are required to abide by?
If not that, then what could be the problem?
Thanks for your help.
I have never had an issue tethering the three years I have been doing it with Verizon. I am also a grandfathered Unlimited user. The Open Access Agreement only works with new contracts. Unlimited contracts have to follow Verizon's old policy as we aren't paying extra if we go over a certain amount (like tiered plans do).
I would blame either the ROM or program. I use the native tether from AOSP ROMs and have no issues you are experiencing

Uzephi, if you are going to post a reply, know what you are talking about first. Aside from not knowing anything about “Open Access” standards, you didn’t even notice that the problem materialized after months of usage without issue. So it couldn’t be an issue with the ROM or program. YOU NEED TO READ AND UNDERSTAND A POST BEFORE REPLYING.
The Open Access Agreement or Rule is a condition of Verizon’s usage of the C-Block 700 Mhz spectrum that was won at an FCC auction in 2008. It is a stipulation that was enforced in 2012 when the FCC fined Verizon $1.25 million for blocking access to tethering apps. It has nothing to do with grandfathered accounts or new customer contracts. It is all about how Verizon manages data transmission via its LTE network.
What I was proposing was that Verizon has figured out a way to detect tethering and is able to shut down network connections. The loss of a network connection is intermittent and hard to predict. Sometimes my connection to a network server is maintained while my tethered device cannot make a decent connection. Sometimes neither my tethered devises nor my phone can connect to a server. Sometimes the connection is strong. The reason I think that this is something that Verizon is doing is because if I reboot my phone, most of the time everything goes back to normal, at least for a little while. I have considered throttling, but I am in a small town, I can’t imagine that Verizon would throttle their LTE in a small town, let alone throttle it at all.
So, any INFORMED thoughts?

Read response above. I was informing you of a stipulation you apparently do not know about your own contract.
I have a similar contract and plan: unlimited. Why would one be stopped and not the majority? I use well over 150GB a month(mostly all tethered) and never had an issue, so I know it isn't Verizon stopping it. Please read up on what you are raging about before making accusations. It is not illegal for them to stop unlimited plans from tethering as you claim.
Edit: my hypothesis for previous post?
Similarities: Phone, data plan
Differences: ROM, Program
Goal? Trying to tether.
Results: my phone, Plan, ROMs (AOSP) and program (app) let me tether a lot.
Why can't you? Check the differences.
Maybe the app updated in the background and broke your tether.
Please act more respectful to a suggestive post instead of raging at my hypothesis.

Hi All,
Longtime Samsung user here and I've just moved over to the V10.
Hello to all.
I've been doing a lot of reading and as far as I can tell there is no known way of bypassing the tethering provision on T-Mobile to take advantage of unlimited data plans, is this correct? I have heard of 3rd party apps like WiFi for tether router and FoxFi but lately people have been suggesting that T-Mobile has found a way to monitor those.
So is there a way to take advantage of my unlimited data plan using my device as a hotspot?

only way I know to bypass (on PC) set user agent to chrome on Linux or android or Firefox on Linux Android
if you tell t-mobile you want there. truly unlimited data, no BS unlimited, you get free unlimited hotspot free, no extra games, BS, or hotspot hacks needed.

I called T-Mobile and asked about unlimited hotspot and was told they do not offer such a package. How did you get yours?
njdevil, I'm not sure why they didn't offer you this. im in SC, so that may have been a promotional thing, or state specific. Sorry for your troubles, but i promise that's what i have.

I never doubted you. I just wish I could jump on the same trolley car as you. Unlimited tether would be sweet
Sorry to rehash but has there been any progress to this issue?
Has anyone been able to leverage their unlimited data plan for hotspot?

ok for me, even tho it is a pin in the a$$
Foxfi have a wifi share option(not stable but work for me) that's what i use. you have to be usb tethering
so if you have a laptop or desktop with Wifi capbility that is your best option( your computer then become the hotspot
hope you understand my English

Thanks for replying but That's not going to help. I need to hook up a Roku wirelessly.
I think I may have a solution but I need to test more before I share

I thought I had it with WiFi Tether for Root but it turned out I was still racking up data on my hotspot and not my unlimited plan.
I could really use it though.
*thugmafia, your correct, but I've got a 14GB tethered promo..

Hi All,
Longtime Samsung user here and I've just moved over to the V10.

Use Siraltus' rom, the one that says debranded, debloated, deodexed, then download wifi tether router by Fabio Grassio from the playstore, works perfect, also delete system/app/upsell.apk
Ok. I deleted the upsell apk and the native tether no longer works but WiFi for tether root works. I'll see if my usage good up and report back

It has been years since I tether or used my hotspot plan that comes with my "unlimited" plan (metropcs/tmobile). I couldn't afford my cable bill this month so it was temporarily suspended. My kids freaked out, no Netflix? I assumed that I had "unlimited" hotspot with my "unlimited" plan but I guess I was wrong. I received a text that at was at 10% remaining yesterday and then the throttle began.
I received a text asking if I want more hotspot data...I clicked link. It was just offering more phones and plans. No extra hotspot plans.
So I had to resort to my old tactics and try to go around the throttle. Here were some of my tries:
1. Wifi Tether Router: I bought this last year and have always worked before. Not this time. My speeds were ridiculous slow when tethering. Developer is awesome on providing frequent updates. So I guess I have to wait.
2. PDAnet: it worked for a while but it kept resetting itself. So, I decided not to buy it.
3. Titanium BackUp: freezed native apps- my account, name id, tethering provision
Still throttled.
Will report if I found a solution. But will be paying my cable bill first.

From my understanding there is really no way around the slowdown once Tmobile flags your account for tether disablement. Some data usage is counted towards your pool of tether alotment even if you use those workarounds .Once your billing cycle starts over and tethering provision is reset than you will be able to tether a lot longer as long as you use one of the apps you mentioned earlier .You may need to freeze the Tmobile.adapt app with Titanium back up I think that's one of the system apps used to monitor your tether usage ..like I said not all data is masked so some seepage will happen but you will be able to tether longer ........hope I helped

Have you tried adjusting the TTL option in Wifi Tether Router? I read that worked.
