Wifi Tether hack (no Root) - Verizon HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE

Hey there,
Has anyone tried the ##778 hack to enable Wifi Hotspot tethering on the DINC4G?? Does it work?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122289

You could also try clockwork mod tether. I don't know how well it works personally, but I've heard good things

Just use one of the wifi tether apps like pdanet or easytether. works great for me.

Thanks for the reply's guys. I actually do have EZ-Tether and use it with my laptop when necessary. But I also need a wireless option when I pass internet connectivity to an RTK GPS survey controller from my work supplied DINC2. Since its a work phone, rooting/romming isn't an available option.
The old hack method let me run under the radar on several fronts if you know what I mean. I just wanted to find out if the old hack was still available before trading up to the Inc4G.
:good:

looks like the FCC just ruled that they can't charge for tethering so maybe you can just use the built in option.
Not sure how verizon is going to change due to this ruling.

They will still get you on data usage

The FCC only said they couldn't block tethering apps from the Play Store. There's a big difference there.

No (according to the article I read) Verizon also agreed not charge for tethering. The article however said that this would only apply to 4G non-unlimited plans which is the case now anyways I believe. I did not see anything that specifically said they can't charge it for unlimited or 3g accounts but I guess they prob still will

it's so weird actually using the verizon mobile hotspot lol.

how does this work now? itried it it gave me an 800 number to call??

me too at first, did you get rid of the unlimteed data, and on a shared everything?
if so u get the free mobile data, i just opened it and pressed it and it worked.
it didnt at first but that was because initially i kept my unlimted plan (when i didnt want to) and the guy screwed up (good thing I happened to have called CS)
it saves our family of 4 smart phones 80$ a MONTH!!!
I don't ever need unlimited, I pay for wifi at my house so I take advantage of that and the batt savings.
only use 4g when needed.
I finally moved the cable modem into my room the wifi crappy netgear wifi thing for my desktop blows!
if for vista, i upgraded to wiindows 7, that was a fiasco, then i upgrade my comp from 2GB RAM to 6.5GB and apparaently anything over $GB the wifi wont work.
took me all day of google searching to find the hacked code.
i even to this day have to start my computer a special way to disable signature something to get the wifi to work, happy dont have to do that crap anymore. lol

foxfi on the market with the proxy addon works for me.
then set your proxy settings in internet options to 192.168.43.1

The FoxFi with proxy addon works well, but it it's limited to http/https protocols, and your device that you are tethering must have an option to set up proxy settings. If you need other protocols, you will need a USB tether option.

Hmm does ics have the ability to change proxies? I just want to watch netflix on my Asus transformer using my phones internet.

So far I've gotten Open Garden to work between my incredible 4g, my Asus EeePC, and my Toshiba thrive tablet. It's a pretty cool app, and it's evolving. There are limitations.
Currently it uses Bluetooth, and they are planning on supporting WiFi. If your using it on a PC it only works with the browser (I've used it with Firefox). When first connecting my Asus to my Incredible it wasn't taking. I messed around with it, and added my tablet and then they all connected. After the first connection it now automatically connects if the app is running on both devices.
If you want more info Google open garden.

Tried the old hack as soon as I got the phone. Unfortunately, it does not work.

Connectify is another option (if you have the right hardware), never gave me a bsod. People probably get it because they have the wrong hardware. I had the right hardware and had to do this when I had a Rooted Motorola Droid/Milestone (which is in the garbage since it broke), cause it's wifi tether was ad-hoc only. (Still never failed me)

Tethering Tweaks?

I just bought a thunderbolt on impulse. This time yesterday I had no plan to do so, but I woke up on the wrong side of the bed I guess.
Love the phone thus far, though coming from an EVO I don't feel much difference beyond the speed of the device.
Does anyone know ways to improve tethering? Using the FCC speedtest app I am getting 5-7Mbps Down adn 20-30Mbps Up pings all around 100. On my tethered XOOM I am getting an impressive 4-6ish down, 3-6ish up with pings from 50-150.
The numbers when I started this thread were about 3 and 3 which still beats my evos 1 and 1 in optimal conditions. Thus far the Thunderbolt seems to connect to 4G instantly and unlike the EVO the stock tethering app is 4G friendly, but more to the point the 700mhz seems to be proving to be less placement centric. I can have it on a chair in the corner of the room under a desk and it seems to still get damn good speeds. Where I am used to putting my EVO on a windowsill and still wanting better signal.
All that aside, my point of this thread is, has anyone found tweaks that increase tethering performance? Are certain channels better, or does less/no encryption increase performance?
Bump. I know I can't be the only one who wants an answer to the best way to tether.
im new to verizon and read that they are able to detect tethering from rooted devices. nice that we have tethering now, but when the time limit runs out will tethering be possible? has anyone tethered on verizon before without issue? is tethering truly unlimited, or is there a cap/throttle?

I've been tethering on my D1 for months and never been "detected". Tethered data looks like cell phone data to the provider. The only way I could see being detected is if the app you are using (the included one) sends some sort of flag. AFAIK the root wifi tether does nothing of the sort.
what are you guys using to tether? a 3rd party tethering app?
I've tethered heavily for at least 8 months on Incredible and Droid X. Never had an issue with detection. You will need root for third party app once root us achieved. Permanent root should come today. Then use app from market

Once you have root this program will let you use wifi to tether: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
There is one in the market too, but I've never used it...
-Edit-
Also been tethering for over a year on my Droid and have never had an issue with VZW. My highest month ever was only 4 gigs, I average around 1.5-2.
I think your reception issue is more in the higher quality of the VZW network compared to the lousy Sprint network your EVO is on. People don't like to admit it, but my friends on Sprint and AT&T all have spots in thier house where the phone only works, or works best, etc.... Verizon that is generally not an issue.

A bit off-topic here but I turned on MobileAP on Galaxy Tab (AT&T) so that I could check out the GTablet while I was @local officemax store, AT&T detects it and sent me email & SMS reminder that I will need to have a proper plan.
So yes, they should be able to detect.

You can root it and use barnacle, or use the hotspot feature under the "wireless and network settings" if AT&T hasn't disabled it. I was planning on getting one earlier today, but wasn't able to get to the store before work.
Check the settings and see if "Tethering & portable hotspot" feature is there. If it is it will just use your regular data plan.
Ok thanks im going to just wait for a root to come out.

When I picked up my phone at AT&T they asked me if I wanted the family (?) tether plan for $45/mo. I said no. When I checked the phone at home, the tether option was there, so is it cool to tether the phone without getting a nasty gram?

The moment you turn that on and start using it you will get a notice that you will need to change to that tether plan. Unless you get PDAnet or root the phone and use one of those apps.
I rooted , used Titanium Backup and froze tethering manager app, wifi tethering now works fine with my android tablet.

Any link to rooting the AT&T version? Want to root and use the built in tether. As of now, when you try to use the tether it will say you need to have the tether option. Don't want to pay the extra for using it a few times a month.

Yep, you're right. I just tried it.
I guess I root.
You need to root the phone and unintall the Tethering Manager in order to use the built-in tethering features without paying for it.
Just remember that a lot of people have been getting nastygrams from AT&T even without interference from tethering manager. There has been a lot of speculation as to the cause, but naive tethering is detectable in a number of ways, so don't be surprised if they suddenly decide to up your bill by $20.
Has anyone actually used Barnacle with this phone?
I rooted and installed Barnacle, which has to be downloaded from their site because it is blocked in Market. I start Barnacle and it has SU privilege, but no device can see the hotspot it creates. Even when I create the WiFi network there is no connection.
I'm having the same problem as far as my phone telling me I need a tethering plan. If you want to tether without paying for it, you have to root and freeze/remove tethering manager, or use a third-party app. Plus, you still risk AT&T slapping you with the overpriced tethering plan if they catch you. Not really sure there is anything you can do.
I figured as much. I never had a problem up til today when I got my new Gs2. I don't tether much at all to be honest with you. But at&t screwed me cause now I'm without Internet so I can't root even if I wanted to. I think I have no choice but to get a wireless Internet card til I root & find a decent ROM. Thanks a bunch for the advice though.. Much appreciated!!

You don't necessarily have to download it from their site. If you have a wifi connection you should be able to put the phone in airplane mode, turn on wifi, and connect that way. Either that or remove the sim card and get on wifi. As long as the sim is either removed or disabled and you are on wifi the market will not be filtered.
Maybe you're trying to connect devices to it that can either only see an infrastructure mode access point or are set to only connect to those. My laptop didn't see mine at first, but then I changed the setting in the wireless to show all types of connections (ad-hoc and infrastructure) and it worked. I had to actually modify the wifi_supplicant file on my moto Xoom for it to see ad-hoc connections.

Hotspot / WiFi Tether Issues.

Hi all- just picked up a SGSII (upgraded from an iPhone 4) and have been experiencing issues with the hotspot/wifi tether feature.
I can connect to the hotspot just fine from my iPad 2, MacBook Pro, and also have tried this on an IBM Thinkpad. After a minute or so (sometimes less), the hotspot just stops working. It shows that I am still connected, and the browser on the phone works just fine, but the connected device just won't work, eventually timing out. I need to then restart the hotspot all together for it to work again for 30s-1min..
This has been consistent from when I bought the phone (stock, obviously), through now (rooted)..
it looks like this is a recurring issue for some people, including other carriers, countries as you can see from the link below:
forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1750682
Does anyone else have this problem/has anyone found a solution?
It's quite frustrating.
Thanks!
I haven't used stock tethering, but I used the rooted tether with Cognition. It works fine. Don't know if its the same application that tethers, I'd assume it is.

Maybe a dumb question, did you pay for the tethering plan on your account? If not, that could be your reason but I thought tethering won't work at all if that's the case. You will have to root your phone and remove the tethering manager in order to use tethering/hot spot without paying AT&T $$$.

Yes- i pay for the tethering plan through AT&T.
After doing some testing, I've realized that the hotspot works perfectly if the screen never times out. The moment the screen times out, the wifi connection is lost! If i keep the screen on, the connection works great... in fact i'm posting this right now from my tethered MacBook Pro... and I've been on for about 10 minutes.. wierd.
Check your wifi settings and sleep policy to never, don't know if that will help, but I would try that first.

You need root your phone first. Then install TitaniumBackup app from market. This app will allow you to remove apps that you normally can't remove (inluding those AT&T bloatwares).
After removing Tethering Manager, you will be able to use the built-in wifi hotspot as well as USB tethering feature without paying for a tethering plan. That is until AT&T catches you and send you a cease and desist warning

[Q] USB Tether

Is USB tether an option? or have they figured out a way to bill for that too? And can it be done without root?
I would also like to know if this is possible without buying their plan. Either EasyTether, PDANet, or Tether.com something like that. I'm hoping one of those will work otherwise it's a no go for me. I NEED some kind of tethering capability.
Still no answer to this?
You're either going to have to pay for T-Mobile's tethering service, find a tether app that works, or root your phone and wait for a custom ROM.
This phone was just realeased and not everyone has had the time to tinker with it, nor are there a lot of developers or experienced people roaming this forum yet.
Im assuming there is no mobile hotspot either ?
USB tethering does work with the Amaze 4g with PDAnet. I can confirm it.
The question i have is if someone with a rooted 4g using barnacle is able to wifi tether.
I have my old SIM card in it and it tethers just fine. Acer Iconia and laptop.

Ditto. They've (TMo US anyway) recently been giving free tethering/hotspot to anyone with 5gb or greater who asks, which is what I've got. And the built in tethering and hotspot both work great.
I've never gotten close to 5gb personally, but I just got the Amaze, and it is so much faster than my HD2 was (or even my cable) that I've basically been leaving WiFi off.

I've never gotten close to 5gb personally, but I just got the Amaze, and it is so much faster than my HD2 was (or even my cable) that I've basically been leaving WiFi off.

Actualy what tmo been doing is not giving away free tether but changing your data plan.and getting you to sign up for one of their 5gb or more plans.
I tried to get the free hotspot but I'm on a grandfathered unlimited data plan, and I'd be down graded to either the 5 or 10 gb.
And fyi I am very sure, just like the other carriers flow can tell if you are cheating, as in WiFi/tether hack. My rooted g2x had "free" tether, thoguh and never heard from tmo about it.

I am running exact same setup. Make sure you have current drivers on your computer by installing htc sync. You may have to use a different user agent on your web browser to avoid the tmobile upsell page. Pdanet isn't necessary, just use tye built in tethering.

Thanks so much! Firefox "user agent switcher" add-on got the job done, now that wifi hotspot works, I do not need USB tether.
I use very little data and only tether very very sparingly, so really don't see the need of upgrade.

Tethering safely...how do YOU tether?

I am wondering what people are doing for furthering with regards to protecting themselves. I guess most of this stems from a fear of losing my unlimited data plan. Ideally, I would like to tether over a VPN connection to encrypt all my data from anyone even seeing what type it is....but since the default pptp VPN on android does not allow you to browse over VPN from a tethered client, I am wondering what people are doing (if anything) to protect themselves.
Nothing, straight tether
Spoof mobile user agent string on client
ROM that has the kernel changed to allow browsing over pptp VPN connection
Browsing over L2tp VPN
I usually tether with USB, and that's supposed to be more discreet. I've thought about using WiFi tether, but I don't see the point unless I'm trying to connect multiple devices, then I would have to consider finding something to cover up that many devices.
I use Verizon hotspot since I don't care about unlimited data and saved a ton of money switching to the share everything plan....

I did, too. But then I switched to an iPhone because it's more open and has better development.

You guys crack me up
But, anyway. If you're using WiFi Tether, can't you just set a security key?

Yes. That is a great point to secure from nearby users. Most programs allow you to use a WiFi password.
Im also wondering how people are handling the "safety" of verizon detecting people tethering when they still have unlimited data and are using something other than the mobile hotspot.

From what I understand it's like it's run through a proxy. So I guess as long as you don't tether 10GB in a month they won't pay much attention.

Are you saying than any tethering done from any tethering app (in my case "WiFi tether") runs through a proxy and that makes it undetectable by verizon?
I have not understood it to be that way. From what I understand, when you tether, unless you match the user agent string of your mobile browser, the packets/data can be detected by Verizon and they can potentially terminate your contract for violating its terms. When you use a VPN all of the data is encrypted and therefore there is no way for Verizon to detect the tethering.

Wait, I just remembered...What's it matter? The FCC just slapped Verizon with a huge fine and told them they can't stop customers from tethering/can't charge them, correct?
Ive tethered with pdanet n wifi tether for two years now, tethered more than ten gigs....no issues yet

Here ya go.
Usually PDANet for myself, Wifi Tether for my iPhone friends :highfive:
Just tether we all do it and there is nothing to worry about unless u hit Luke 10 gb all the time or more

Yeah, don't stress it. WiFi Tether away!
When I moved into my new house last year, it took a few days to get my internet squared away. I just tethered off my phone, and the whole family had reliable internet (as long as I was home, of course). Just make sure your brightness is down and you are plugged into a charger, cuz it drains a battery quick, and the phone will get pretty hot.
PdaNet and USB tether, here. Simple setup, secure, and has built-in cloaking of tether usage.
I just don't get why WiFi tether is such a big deal, unless you want to give away your bandwidth to other people (if you don't use security and password protect). Using USB tether keeps the phone charged while tethering, and is the most secure. Win-win-win situation, if you ask me.

It's quite easy to secure, plugging into a wall charges it better, and you don't have to install any software or drivers on the device you are trying to tether. Win, win, and win for me.
As for the overall topic, I don't do anything other than run Wifi Tether. Currently, we're tethering the whole house because our uVerse is out of service after a storm.
