I like Motoblur - Droid 2 Global Themes and Apps

I don't know why everyone hates on motoblur. I love it on my D2G, its quite fast and the builtin weather widget is nice.

You may be the only person to ever admit to liking blur. That must have taken some balls to post.

I like it too, you will be surprised how many people do. It is just those who don't making too much noise of it.
For me blur dialer, contacts, messaging, social networking integration is something that makes UI streamlined for my daily use. I hear good things about the "new blur" coming with the GB update and I can't wait to try it.

Finally, another non-hater.

I gave it its fair try but I finally ended up using go launcher ex and freezing whatever blur thing I could. I did for a while use fission and liked it but could not input the sim unlock code on it so I stayed with the original.

I used it for about 9 months before learning how to root and change ROMS. It was buggy, lots of forced restarts, etc. That built in weather widget is crap too, doen't update very well. Since switching to Liberty I've been happy as a clam. This runs much faster and next to zero bugs.
Then again in the case of a bug there's ways to report it to the developer and get something fixed rather quickly.

..... To the pyre!!!!!!

Huh. I must have simply gotten used to whatever the system in my old Droid 1 had. Like being able to sort and display contacts by last name first name.
I can appreciate that there are users that like the blur apps, but I think they "blur" the line between true smartphone fuctionality and older pda-like phones.
disclaimer: I carried pdas around for almost 10 years before smartphones.
Dan

i can understand why someone would like the blur apps, i personally like the contacts widget, contacts app and messaging app, but blur itself is terrible, first thing i did when i got my phone (after giving blur a chance and hating it) was root it and freeze all the bloat, except the blur apps i actually like, the phone was much smoother, battery life was better and i didnt have to deal with the blur launcher and useless apps anymore.

I got my D2G about two weeks ago, I had issues with blur, but with the 2.3 update they've all disappeared. I can't think of a reason why I should root my phone now.

Along with all the Verizon apps.

I also like it. the services of it is good. and with built-in launcher, the Motorola widgets works such good.
The best function is SNS network integration, very easy to use and powerful.
But the Motorola will stop developing it for next new coming devices. another word, I think the Google will create some powerful applications like blur. (if the players can't totally accept Google+ at this moment).

Anyone running SPB Mobile Shell 3D on their MoPho?

I was just wondering if anyone is running SPB Shell 3D on their phone and how they like it. Does it make the phone laggy? Is it a battery hog? I was thinking of getting it for my wife. She loves the phone but the UI is a little dull in her opinion and I wanted to kinda spice it up for her a bit. She was very discouraged when I told her the MoPho has almost zero dev support and she is now wondering if she made a mistake buying one. I am trying to explain to her that it's still an amazing phone but giving her a little "visual enhancement" with the 3D shell would go a long way I think.
Thanks in advance!
Ive had it for a few days and I love it. imo I noticed an improvement with the UI over the stock one.
my sister runs it on her photon. shes a pretty big user when it comes to Facebook and texting... blah blah blah. shes runs a stock photon rooted and has no issues. when i have used her phone just a few times, its memory is always around 320ish free where im not running 3dshell and have around 400ish. so it uses up a little more RAM, but i havent seen any big battery issues. she makes it through a whole work day with heavy use.
I would get it for myself, but its 15 bucks!!! im more interested in giving that money to developers within my phone to have other stuff.
but for your wife, i think she will greatly enjoy it. MY sister loves it and she runs it on her Samsung tab also that her 2 year old uses.
When you think about it... its probably a really good thing she has the same on both, allows the kids to be familiar with how moms phone works in case there is an emergency and they have to use their mammas phone. they will know how to navigate since its the same.
I like it alot. Don't notice any difference in battery life. I have had it restart a couple times. I think its the best. I have used it on every rom I've installed, homebase, alien, magnifier, jokers stock and skinny, even put it on cm7. Don't regret the $15 purchase at all.

Just buy it and try it out. If she doesn't like it, get a refund.

Google market doesn't give you enough time to properly try most apps, especially a launcher.
Buy it. I bought the SPB Shell when I had the HTC Evo. The launcher is really slick. The animations are awesome, and the SPB Widgets are pretty cool as well. Very little customization - meaning changing themes or colors (like a Go Launcher, or Launcher Pro), however it is one of the most responsive launchers that I have used. Definitely worth the $15. Your wife wil not complain!
Thanks guys
I bought it, but I don't use it... It just sits in my apps taunting me... Seriously though, if you use the webtop on the phone then you will end up hating it, it uses WAY to much memory. I am a very heavy webtop user and had to give it up, I couldn't have more than 2 tabs open in the browser without getting a low memory issue.
That said if you don't sport the webtop then you will not have any issues. The GUI is fast and when I did use it I noticed no impact on the battery. If it wasn't for webtop I would be all over it... But I do so love my webtop.
I have been using it for moths and love the smooth functional interface. Seems way more responsive than stock
I've been using it for quite a while. Runs smooth on the Photon and battery life is good. Just use home switcher from the Market and switch over to the stock UI before activating Webtop. Then just switch back when done.
Honestly, if all she wants is a UI change put LP or ADW on there with some themes and see what she says. Then use apps such as Beautiful Widgets, Folder Organizer, etc to customize the screens even more. All for little to no money spent.
BTW....SPB will give a refund past the 15min trial the Market gives if you send them an email request. Also, SPB can be had for $9.99 off Handster if you do the phone purchase and don't mind dl the updates manually.
I just don't see that there is 14 or even 10 dollars worth of software there.
I understand that this is why big names took and are still taking for ever with mobile developments (users won't pay a ton of cash for software any more), but really your paying for a bunch of ActionScript animations and that's about it, yeah its nifty and kind of cool to look at - but ADW EX has tons of animations as well, not to the level SPB does, but for 90% less than what SPB charges.
I purchased it last night and she seems to enjoy it but she said this morning she is having an issue with Handcent where she keeps getting the same 2 messages from her sister over and over again for the past hour. I wonder if the 2 progs don't play nice together. That would really suck since she probably wouldn't give up Handcent.

Handcent is widely used enough that I would assume it would work with everything.
I would try clearing App Data of Handcent.
So I sent an email to SPB Tech Support regarding the SMS problem and they basically said that it can't be their product doing it. That's bull**** since it didn't do it until I installed the shell on her phone. Their solution was to download home launcher from the market and use it to switch back to Moto-Blur. Wow, thanks for nothing.

This might not be an issue with Handcent. I have been having issues with text messages for about a week. They are all coming in 3-4 days late, and some of them keep getting pushed back to me no matter how many times I delete them. And, I am using the stock messaging app.

They might be right. Could just be a coincidence. I haven't figured out why the text issues are happening yet. My guess is it is Sprint because my configuration hasn't changed and SPB hasn't updated since Oct. 12th.
But how can it be sprint if it wasn't doing it 2 days ago before I installed SPB? Also, I am not having any issues on my 3VO with SMS either. It's definitely a phone issue.

I just don't see how it can be SPB since I have had it installed for a long time with the same setup. The last update to SPB was on Oct. 12th and I never experienced a problem until a week or so ago.
When time allows I will do some testing and see if I can figure out what is going on. There is a good chance another product might be causing the issue but will no more soon.
**Edit.....Forgot I did a battery pull last night and haven't had the issue occur yet. Will check it over the next few days and see what happens.

The two things I care about happening after this goes through:
-Unlocked Bootloaders
-No Blur
Hopefully all moto devices will become like the Nexus series, or at least remove a good bit of the extra applications added on/motoblur
Maybe now Razr gets updates first
google should make motorola workers suffer.
The Galaxy Nexus still has a locked bootloader with Vz doesnt it?

Am I one of the only people who actually think some of the moto apps are good and useful? Don't get me wrong, I'd like to have the option to use stock and remove the stuff I don't use but compared to HTC Sense which I had previously I think it's loads better!
I like how all the accounts are in one place & the Universal Inbox which I use for 4 email accounts and texts. The Social Network Widget is pretty handy for at a glance usage.
I don't use Motocast for streaming but I know some people do, and it's quite handy that you can find the location of your phone and remote wipe it if necessary online with moto.
I don't think it's too obtrusive and you get swype incuded too so not all bad!

100% Agree! Way better than stock google, the blur of today is the best skin out today...
Most of my friends have android phones of varying brands and all say they hate the bloat. They install an AOSP ROM and then they say "where's my social widget" or "Where's my funky clock widget" or "where's all my useful apps" etc etc. Then they either spend hours trying to find alternatives on the Android Market that either don't do the job as well or end up paying for apps. Some just take their phones back to stock in the end (although the least popular amongst my friends is HTC Sense). They all seem to like blur on my Razr though as it doesn't seem as obtrusive but still provides some good, functional apps and widgets. As said earlier, I don't use motocast and I don't think I'll ever use webtop either although I can see how it would be a useful feature for some and not many other phones can do anything like it.
People just seem obsessed with having a stock android phone nowadays. I'm surprised the nexus line doesn't sell absolutely loads based on the number of people asking for stock android...
Coming from the thunderturd, I.can say HTC sense is garbage. I hated everything about it except the clock widget. I'm absolutely loving the blur on my RAZR. The only thing I'm wanting on here is ics. Other then that I wouldn't change a thing.

MIUI = Love!

Just installed the MIUI Beta and I am LOVING this ROM! My absolute favorite so far. It's smooth, my battery seems to be holding good. No FC's yet. The look and feel is great! Good job devs!
Few questions though. How do I delete individual notifications? No (X) next to then, and I tried to swipe them to delete, but nothing. Also, on the lock screen, if I drag over the camera, it doesnt open the camera, just goes to the home screen.
Other than that it's amazing! Thanks guys!

I just came from CM7. Didn't like it much. Too glitchy and just didn't like the overall look and feel. I had Eclipse before and that was my favorite until now. Just too many issues with CM7
- dock shortcuts would seem time change or dissapear on their own. Like I would boot up and there would be a star where the browser used to be. Or where the app drawer shortcut was. One time I pressed the browser button and ALL of my dock icons dissappeared.
- Widgets sometimes would be invisible. I could long press them where they should have been and it would let me delete them or move them. But they wouldn't show up.
- I had it in my dock and it showed it was plugged in and charging. Had like 95% battery when I plugged in. Woke up to a dead phone. 0% battery. Even if it wasn't charging, it would have made it through the night on 95%
And just some other weird stuff. Just didn't like it much. Sorry. I even tried wiping and reflashing. Still basically the same.
MIUI is running stable so far. And I love the look and feel.

SMH. You should read up more on MIUI, and TRY IT, before you put out your opinions/"assumptions." MIUI was created by Xiaomi Tech, a Chinese firm (dunno wtf you got arabs..), so it's not just some random dev's collaborating, but an actual company putting out the ROM for usage in handsets in Asia that got picked up by the rest of the Android community. And as far as open source, they announced back in February of this year that they were going to begin opensourcing their applications and ROM, which you can see over at their GitHub (google it..).

Thanks thelowend. Yes I have tried Eclipse, and as I said it was my favorite. But MIUI is really cool. I think I like it because its so different. And everything seems so integrated. Like the notifications, I love how It gives a place for a reply right in the notification! That rocks! It just looks and feels more refined.
I am finding a few more bugs. Like Youtube not working, or any streaming video for that matter. Even some of my saved vids on the SD card dont want to play. And I can't record video either. All freeze after about 2 seconds of play/recording.
So far that is the biggest turn-off for me. I use youtube allll the time. Anyone know if they are working on this? I even tried the mobile site, and neither that or the app work.
Eclipse had its glitches too. But both are very good ROMs.
Oh one other glitch that really bugged me from CM7 is gapps kept FC'ing after a while and I would need to un-install and re-install it every so often.

Sense 4 Or Pure Google?

So I've come to a delimma.
Sooner or later, there will be an official port for CM9 or AOKP for the Evo LTE.
I had an OG evo for 2 years, and never really liked sense. Even when Sense 3.0 came out, I liked the ring lockscreen and the fact that you could drag a new message to the ring to open it etc... But I always found the sense 3.0 ports to the OG Evo to be half baked, or slow/laggy.
I stuck true to Evo Deck, and when he started developing the ICS deck, I kept up with it, as well as AOKP.
After using my Evo LTE for a week, I've grown to like sense 4. I really like the lockscreen features, specifically the dragging message feature. I find that sense 4.0, true to it's theory of development, is much less obtrusive than sense 3.0, but deep down I still have a yearning for pure google, the true ICS flavor (or at least AOKP, same flavor, but with sprinkles.)
I know that the lockscreen shortcuts can be emulated with a quad or octo lockscreen, but what about the sliding message feature?
What are your guys' thoughts on the matter?
Who's going to stick with HTC's sense when CM9 or AOKP (or even Kush's ROM if he's making it own, haven't kept up with it recently) come or, and who's going to jump ship to a non-sense rom and why?
I'm excited to hear what everyone else thinks!
Have you looked at go locker? Or widget locker? Those two have some nice features that emulate the sense lockscreen and are nice when you run aosp and aokp.

Hmm, I don't generally like using third party lockscreens, in my experience they're pretty buggy and don't mesh well with the os, a lot of blinking out when you unlock lag, re-locks etc

CM9 all the way as soon as it's released. I actually had a hard time deciding between this and the Galaxy Nexus but I couldn't pass up on the specs of this thing.
Cm9 allllll the way... As long as all the camera functions get ported over.

so is ANYONE sticking with sense?
I also noticed that google wallet doesn't work with rooted phones....
I'll go back and forth between the two. I love sense4 but it's glitchy.

I tried setting up Google Wallet today just for the hell of it and it just wouldn't work. I think it's because I have 2-step verification enabled on my account. Doesn't matter, I never really planned on using it anyway except maybe to spend the $10 they give you for signing up. There are about 4 different mobile payment methods that are all supported by different companies (almost none of which support Google Wallet) I have a feeling it's not going to survive very long anyway. Even the GNex on Verizon doesn't have it installed because Verizon supports a different payment method.
As for Sense, it was useful on earlier versions of Android to make things a little prettier and more user friendly. Matias Duarte and his team have done a great job to address that and now I just feel it gets in the way. Think of what you have to go through just to change the wallpaper. On stock ICS you long press on the screen and choose change wallpaper. On this you pull down the notification tray>settings>personalize>wallpaper. It's just not intuitive and simple like it should be.
Another thing that bothers me is the recent apps. It seems like they changed some stuff just for the sake of changing it and have a worse implementation of it.
I personally have always preferred Sense or Sense based ROMs. Could never get into the vanilla experience on a phone it just looks so "8 bit" to me. I'll definitely be keeping Sense 4, love the look and functionality.

There in lies the beauty of Android, everyone can have exactly what they like. Take for instance the roms for the OG EVO by MagnusRagnarok, I always felt they were way over the top but there are a lot of people who liked them. I personally always defaulted to either CM7 or Fresh roms. I do feel that ICS is quite beautiful in it's elegance though, much more so than earlier versions of Android. It's not handicapped like iOS but still very intuitive.

This is what matters is to keep what you said in mind. For example I like to try the newest thing but I got the EVO over the nexus for sense. That way I could play with the newest thing but always go back to sense.

I've never flashed ROMs before and initially I loved Sense, however the issues with multitasking and Sense reboots is driving me insane!
Nova Launchers is helping, but I think I'll be trying a ROM, but only if it's fully functional.

I will stick with sense as I have not had the issues others have had. (Multitask, lag, etc..) Sense seems to run fine for me, hell it's a phone..
Also I have rooted my phone and google wallet works just fine. It did take me many attempts to get my 10$ credit but it seems to wkr fine. the issue I have is I never take my phone with me into stores, etc... so I haven't tested it yet...
I am going to get some (already ordered) some NFC tags so I can play with that seems kewl..

Also I really love the camera on this phone and all the functions. It's pretty awesome!
I will hang on to sense for a while until CM9 is fully vetted...and seems stable then I will probably try it...
So far so good... my friends are jealous!
For anyone who hasn't tried it yet the sense 4 car dock is arguably the best car dock I've used.

I've always used Sense. I want to like stock and it is getting better but I still feel it is just a little behind UI wise.

Sense
Thanks for the good discussion! I'm still on the OG EVO, running SOS ROM. Swagstr has done wonders to make Sense 1.0 run as it should but what I'm hearing regarding sense 4.0 just bugs me. Multitasking is something I use a lot of and sense restarts have always plagued me. I love the scenes in sense, use one for home and one for work and generally like the polish it brings. Hate the laggy aspects as well.
I love the new EVO hardware and while I was tempted to go with the GNex, it's just too dated now. If it wasn't for the multitasking screw up, I'd be picking one up today. In the meantime, I'm reading reviews and seeing what the Devs have in store.
A couple of questions:
What are the opinions on multitasking? I switch from Touchdown to Enhanced Email, to Voice, Pulse, Handcent almost constantly during the day. This sounds like a hair pulling situation in Sense 4.
Sense restarts? I know it's a sure thing to restart if too many browser tabs are open, but I also get it if I switch from Pulse to browser or another app a few too many times. Are people seeing frequent restarts?
Thanks again!
I haven't used sense in over a year. I use widget locker for the lockscreen, nova launcher for the launcher, beautiful widgets for the time/weather on the home screen. Even use a different dialer - dialer one, which allows way more customization than the stock.
IMO, sense does nothing more than dumb down the phone. If you want a dumb phone, go iphone
The pic below with the clock at the top is my home screen. Clock at the bottom is the lock screen. Everything right where I need it.
I've always liked sense best because I didn't really like the look of stock android, but now ICS went better on the UI side. I still think I like sense 4 better though.
I actually liked Sense as well. Even though I rooted my OG EVO to get superuser stuff and wi-fi tether, I stuck with sense.
Sense 4 looked very nice BUT it was reloading constantly. Every time i exited an app.
There are several root-required tweeks I have seen that are supposed to help this, but I'm not sure how much you can do as much memory as Sense is taking up.
For now problem solved with Nova Launcher, which I think I will keep even after I decide to Root & ROM - Very interested in what is going on with Viper's custom ROM myself.
Also, if you want to try a different phone dialer, check out aTakephone, just like my old Treo!

[Q] So you think you're so "special"?!?!?

I have a question for all those guys that make a big deal about having their phone upgraded to ICS or JB. I would like to know what is the big difference or a feature that would make my phone Atrix that's stuck on GB so special? I mean, I can run any browser I want except maybe chrome, I can run any email app and watch and listen to music just like on upgraded phone... oh and lets not forget I can still make phone calls. Have I been living under a rock or do you know something I don't? Please let me know
Thanks for your time.

Well firstly, ICS/JB is soo much smoother and much more asthetically pleasing. Many more people prefer ICS/JB and they are entitled to their own opinions.
Also, many people are angry at MotoFail because they promised us ICS and did not deliver. This is what has caused most of the outrage.
Well, yes I'm mad myself that they did not upgrade my $600 phone. BTW I'm using GO Launcher so my phone still looks pretty good and I can't complain about not being smooth. If this is it, it ain't that bad.

Yes, for now most applications support GB, but as percentage of ICS/JB will grow, more and more application developers will dump GB support. There are some bugs in GB that are not fixed and probably won't be ever fixed, so some developers make workaround for them, some don't, so you can stumble upon one of those if you are 'lucky'. Most of new applications are primarily targeting new ICS interface with Action Bar, so they support GB with third party Action Bar library which also has a lot of bugs, some application features could be disabled because it is hard or impossible to implement them in GB. And things will get worse...

I agree, these two things may seem small, but going back from CM10.1 to CM7 makes it feel like my phone is very slow (although I'm sure this is more of a perception than a real difference).
ICS and JB bring UI enhancements. More importantly, there are apps that only work on ICS and above and will never be backported, Which apps are important to users, depends on the user. For instance, Brighthouse and TWC have cable apps that only work on ICS and above. And as time goes by, you'll find more and more newer apps will require ICS and later, especially since ICS itself was released 16 months ago.
But you're right, you can still make phone calls and you can still use 2 year old apps. But if all you care about is using just a phone, you can get one without paying for a smartphone plan for a hell of a lot less money. And while it's unrealistic to have the latest greatest software at all times for the term of the contract, the device at least should not be obsolete before the ink dries on that contract. While the device still mostly works as it did when it was new, the actual resale value has plummeted since the ICS update cancellation announcement, so much so that a decent protective case costs more than what the device is currently worth.
So when it comes to why people make such a fuss about ICS, aside from the cancelled update, and aside from all the marketing hype that went into the device that got people to buy it in the first place, and aside from the fact that ICS and JB are that much better or they wouldn't be considered updates/upgrades, some people like to at least be a little current. After all, why go buy a new computer when people will give you an old one running windows 3.11 for free? Who knows, maybe you can find an old Univac somewhere. While we're at it, why use anything new at all when we can go back to wearing animal hides and banging rocks together to make tools.
I should tell you about the security vulnerabilities as well, but I'm not going to. Sometimes the lesson becomes more valuable when the person learns on their own, even if it's with some rogue dialer hooking you up with one of those $100/minute pay per call lines like back in the days of dialup.

Go Launcher is smooth only after first one or two clicks. It has many advantages like foldering but for the smoothness, i dont think so.
What pisses me off about GB is notification bar pull-down. Sometimes it gets damn so laggy and slow.
Google Now, Multiple GTalk logins, stable push connection, data counter/limiter, better app support, interface that's easier to use and navigate, faster, and many other improvements.
Stable push connection is the one that really made me not want to go back. When I'm on mobile data on GB it would disconnect every 4-5 minutes, and then wait for a few minutes before reconnecting, and then disconnect again after another 4-5 minutes, ad infinitum. I can't tell you how many times I've been frustrated seeing gray status bar icons instead of green ones. And the fact that GB's push mail & market is dependent on the gtalk service doesn't help.
Gray icons? No gtalk messages, no mail, no downloading from the market.
Signed out of gtalk? No mail, no downloading from the market.
It was frustrating...
I don't care about staying in gb, imo the problem is that there are apps made only for 4.x+ and in a close future gb will be definitely dead.

I bought this phone 9 months ago for 300€, even a Lapdock (120€), and I hear that ICS won't be delivered by Moto and my digitizer starts glitching (A full zone of the screen). Now my phone is unlocked the warrantly is void. This is what makes me angry.

I'm surprised that Motorola hasn't recognized the digitizer problem. Too many people are affected by it.

I think you guys are exaggerating a little bit. I mean I went to the store and played with phones that run JB and my old Atrix is pretty much just as smooth. I can play Youtube videos in 1080p no problem. And Google Now... do I really need it? I mean I don't live in my phone or on facebook like some of you hard core cell phone users. Balintmaci what did you notice that was so special when browsing on JB OS? Im using Opera browser and it runs pretty fast.
balintmaci said:
smoothness, many apps, YouTube in 720p for instance. hardware acceleration makes it WAY faster. you can not compare the browsing experience... Google now. that's just what I can think of in a few seconds... i believe that's more than enough.

Less reboots/stability
My stock FY/GB Atrix rebooted randomly a lot. It's the whole reason I looked into roots and ROMs in the first place.
I rooted...unlocked...and put epinters CM10 on my Atrix cuz Motorola said I couldn't!
Haha... good for you mister. Now I'm a total newbe so pardon the stupid question. When you guys flash roms to CMx... ie ICS or JB does this allow you to download and install apps that require that OS from play store?

Same. Got the device in September of 2011 from local AT&T store, in October it started randomly rebooting, even after several factory resets. Between that and the unified messenger spam, I was not impressed.

Yes...and I can flash back to a GB rom anytime I want. I prefer the JB rom without all the bloatware and epinters rom is very good.
