Ok, so as usual I'm a noob in android and got the GS2 as my first.
So I read a lot of stuff in this forum with the search function and came to learn about odin, pit files, modem, csc, pda and some other stuff, and I feel that I can soon do my rooting process however there are some things that I still do not understand and a little help would be appreciated
1 - So, there are kernels and there are ROMs, from what I understood ROM = firmware and that contains a whole new system, so does flashing a ROM also flashes a MODEM file?
2 - I'm from Brazil and so is my GS2, therefore I believe my MODEM file has configs to my country, so if I flash a ROM that'll screw my MODEM file too?
3 - how can I get a right MODEM file?
4 - I read about the ROM kitchen, and from my understanding you can create your own ROM, is there something available for GS2 too?
5 - Are there good ROMs for GS2 already? Or just kernels to get root?
6 - Is Odin used just in the rooting process of the S series?

Full rom yes custom rom probably but depends whats been put in the rom .

Plenty of roms but not a great deal of difference from stock as regards performance yet .

Also, I read about killing all Kies processes to start with the rooting, that refers to the kies in the phone os the kies in pc?
Does installing Kies in pc already gives me all drivers? (I discovered just now that there are a Kies for PC )

Hi,
I am with AT&T in the US and recently bought the Galaxy S2. My device happens to be a French version. My firmware is
PDA: KG1 / PHONE: KG1 / CSC: KG2 (XEF). It's 2.3.3.
I'm not happy with my HSPA+ data connection. While streaming online radio in moving car, it would cut out and constantly buffer. Seems like the data stream is not reconnecting quickly enough whenever there's handoff. This has never happened in my old webOS Pre Plus. The streaming on the same route that I drive daily on the Pre Plus was never an issue.
I don't want to mess with flashing to a different ROM (yet), but is it possible to just replace/flash the baseband only? Perhaps I can try the official ATT baseband? I did a search and am overwhelmed with the amount of info on XDA. I appreciate you help. Thank you.

You will need to root it to be able to install different modems using CWM recovery or you can use Odin to do it with out root if you can find modem packaged for Odin, as for the AT&T modem while it will work okay for data your call quality will be terrible so it is not really an option for an international version SGS2.

I was recently in the US and used my SG II on AT&T without any issues.
I have rooted XXKH3 - with Lite'ning Rom V6.1

Yes, it is possible to flash another modem file to your phone.
The easiest way of doing so is to flash it as zip file via CWM.
But you can also flash the modem.bin file (extract the zip file first) via Odin (in PHONE section).
Here are two links to the latest modem files:

Thanks It_ler. I think your links were truncated, and as a result, it's not coming up. I have Odin on my computer. In your view, is it better to use Odin or CWM?
JackTheMan18 - I don't have issues with voice calls on ATT, but it's the HSPA+ connection when streaming is what I'm not happy about.

Searched myself in this forum and while copying&pasting ... something went wrong.
I don't have a personal prefer ... Odin or CWM ?!
If your phone is rooted and you already have CWM, it is the easiest way to flash modem zip file using CWM.
As I am running on CF-Root kernel which has installed CWM Manager app, I would flash the modem zip file using CWM.
But normally, I choose my ROM and modem and CSC before flashing ... and then I flash all the files I want together at once via Odin.
So, it's up to you !

It_ler - Thank you so much! You've been incredibly helpful! Since you are so knowledgeable, I hope you might be able to answer this follow up question. As I indicated, I'm stuck on the French 2.3.3 ROM.
1. Can I just flash a 2.3.4 or 2.3.5 stock ROM without rooting but using ODIN? Will that be a clean wipe or will it just upgrade and keep all my app and settings?
2. Will doing so prevent Kies from offering me future updates? I don't care about CSC, in fact, half the French customizations on my unit don't work here in the US. My first SGS2 unit that was defective was an UK version (I assume so because it came installed with the BBC app).

I thought that you already knew about the basics, but here they are:
a) To get familiar with flashing ROMs / kernels / etc., find official firmwares, stock kernels, etc. and to learn the "manual" rooting method, read the first post of Intratech's thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278.
Official firmwares are in the second post, and Frankenstein versions (which can be combined with any other modem and/or CSC) are in the third post.
Every ROM is non-wipe - except Intratech has explicitly written that it is a "wipe" version.
Flashing is by using Odin and does not require root.
But Intratech has added a Quick Rooting Guide, just in case you need it.
b) To find the easiest way of rooting, please stick to Chainfire's CF-Root thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399&highlight=CF+Root.
There you learn to root your phone and get ClockWorkMod (CWM) Manager app with CWM recovery mode, system backup&recovery feature, flashing other kernels and zip files, etc..
Nothing to bother. I just flashed CF-Root kernel because it is so easy and I wanted to be able to backup my system.
Now I can answer your questions:
1. Yes, stick to Intratech's description and use a non-wipe ROM to flash using Odin (PDA section).
2. As KIES will only recognize and update official/stock ROMs available in/for your region, flashing any other ROM or kernel will prevent KIES from doing so.
But I don't care too. Flashing with Odin is very easy, fast and as stable as the ROM you are flashing.
I stick to the official/stock ROMs provided by Intratech - they have always doing fine for me.
3. I recommend the latest Frankenstein ROM, which is actually XWKJ1 (which I am running now).
It is Android 2.3.5, good balance between performance and battery life, excellent modem (XXKI3) and you can combine it with any other modem or CSC for your region and/or provider.
Just put this ROM in PDA, your modem in PHONE and your CSC in CSC section of Odin and flash all at once.
If you will find the descriptions and/or files helpful, please remember to push the Thanks button for Intratech and Chainfire, as they both do a great job for all of us.

I did not recognize any issue yet.
But Google Talk is without Video chat.
You can replace it with a leaked Talk app with Video chat enabled.

But you have to use CWM recovery mode to install it.

I was able to install XXKI3 radio. It didn't make a difference. Turns out that I needed to disable fast dormancy. The data connection seems more stable. I will have to test it out further on Monday. In regards to Frankensteinrom XWKJ1, is it already rooted?
If I discover problem on my end with that Frankensteinrom, can I flash back to official ROM without wipe? Thanks!

Neither official nor Frankenstein versions are rooted.
If you want to Root, follow the instructions of Intratech or Chainfire to do so.
You can flash back to an Official ROM.
If you want to flash without wipe, you have to use a non-wipe version.
So, no problem with most of the versions from Intratech's thread.

Hi all,
tried to root my phone with jeboo_kernel_i9100_v1-2a.tar using Odin3 not realizing my phone was an I9100p (they look the same ,almost). Anyway it booted up but i had no signal guessing this was due to it being the wrong kernel? I then tried to flash to CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_LP7-v5.4-CWM5 this gave me only a bootloader screen. I rebooted jeboo_kernel_i9100_v1-2a.tar and i can now use my phone again but without the signal, i do however have super user and CWM on my phone. Im thinking its probably best to give up so ive found the original firmware i need : I9100PXXLSS . unfortuently all copies seem to be on hotfile which has recently been closed. Anyone got this firmware they could send to me? Thanks.
try to search for I9100XWLSW_I9100XXMS2_I9100XEULS5_HOME.tar and flash that.
also you can visit sammobile, they provide good and updated firmwares
And where do you think the OP went to look for this firmware first ?
OP - Samfirmware are still in the process of migrating their stuff to Terra, they started with the most recent firmwares & are working their way back. Try AndroidFirmwares.net & Samsung-Updates.com; if they don't have what you need, you'll either have to flash something else or wait until Samfirmware have what you're looking for back up again. You don't need to flash the exact firmware that was on the phone to get it working again. If your aim is to root the phone & flash a custom rom, any firmware for any country/carrier will do (but don't use 4.0.4). If the intention is to simply go back to stock & stay stock, use any other rom for your carrier (again, stay away from 4.0.4 just in case you decide to root it or whatever).

hi guys,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 (i9100P), originally on orange, but since then I've moved onto T-Mobile. I have been having problems with low signal and many callers complaining that they cannot clearly hear and the sound is cutting out on both sides. T-Mobile have given me a signal booster and although the signal strength has massively improved, I still have poor call quality
Now I could be wrong here, but I think the signal issues have started since I flashed the original orange fw with NeatRom v5.6.
From searching on my pc, I've found my original orange brand fw, which was: I9100PXXLSS_I9100PBVLS2_I9100PORALS6_HOME.tar
Now I want to keep Neatrom, but I want to flash the modem and baseband which are showing as I9100XXMS4 on neatrom....I believe these could be the problem. Where can I get the correct versions that correspond to my mobile and network (EE) and how do I correctly flash these?

Download the firmware (the actual one which u said was present since the beginning)
Open the fw package with winrar
U will see a modem.bin file
Extract it to a known location
Connect phone in Download mode.
Open odin
Click on phone tab and then select ur extracted modem.bin
Flash ...

Thanks very much dr droid. The problem I have is that I've only got the original nandroid backup with the following files:-
boot.img
cache.img
data.img
nandroid.md5
system.img
I extracted these using yaffey, but there is no file called modem.bin. Could you please tell me where it is located?
If this is not possible, where can I download the original orange fw with the following details:-
(MODEL: GT-I9100P
ANDROID VERSION: 2.3.4
BASEBAND VERSION: I9100PBVKI2
KERNEL: [email protected] #2
BUILD NO: GINGERBREAD.BVKI3)
Nandroid backups don't include the modem. Download the entire rom from Samfirmware, extract the modem.bin from that, flash as previously instructed.

Find the most recent firmware for your country/carrier, download it, extract the modem.bin from it, flash that. If you get no joy from that, try another modem from another rom for your country/carrier. Modems are cross-compatible between roms & don't need to be used with a rom that's the same Android version/whatever, E.G - you can use modems that came bundled with GB roms if you're currently running ICS or JB & vice versa, etc, etc. Basically you can use any modem for the I9100, though I wouldn't recommend using modems specified as being for the I9100T unless you've tried every other modem first as these are specifically 'tuned' for the I9100T/the networks of carriers which sold it.
If you find none of the modems bundled with stock roms released by your carrier work for you, you can either:-
A) Root your phone, and start flashing any CWM flashable modem you can get your hands on (there are dozens, obviously - one for each stock rom released by each carrier around the world, there will be several for each carrier at least). This will be easier than downloading several dozen roms & extracting the modem.bin for each if you do get to this stage
and/or
B) Service centre/local mobile repair shop, though I would be doing A & trying as many modems as I could find on here (you will find dozens with an XDA or Google search) before doing that given that involves parting company with money.

1. I've checked on Sammobile.com and there are new i9100P orange firmwares, but since I've now moved to t-mobile, can I still use these? Also does it matter if my phone is a "P" variant?
2. My phone is already rooted with NeatRom v5.6, so how do I:-
a. Backup the current modem incase I flash the wrong modem or mess up?
b. Flash the new modem?

1) Basically you can use any modem for the I9100 (this includes the I9100P)
2) You can't back up a modem, or not easily at any rate. And you don't need to given how easy they are to flash. If you want to go back to a previous modem, simply re-flash it. If you don't have a copy of your current modem, you might want to find a copy of it somewhere before you go flashing something else (not sure why that would be important to you given your current modem is giving you no connectivity, but, anyways...).
3) CWM flashable modems are flashable in the same manner as any other mod/kernel/rom in CWM. Hi all,
I am a newbie and don't know much. So please bear with me.
I was trying to root my Galaxy S5(SM-G900H) by using the tutorial given on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2696537 but the process did not go as planned as keep struck on recovery.img on odin3.10 so I googled and found that changing USB port will help so I take out the battery changed the port and try again but this time I soft-bricked the phone as odin struck on cache.img and now when i try to start my phone I get Firmware upgrade encountered. So now I again googled and found about unified toolkit and install it on my windows 10 ,now when i choose option 6 (i.e. flash stock boot image to your device) it says waiting for usb debugging to be enabled ,now I remember I turn USB debugging on but it is still struck here. Now what should I do? My parents gave this phone just a week ago and I am in deep trouble.
P.S.-I am only able go into the download mode not recovery mode.
Boot into Download Mode and use Odin to install the original firmware. Might require a factory reset after if still bootlooping. Here is a link to 6.0.1 from Sri Lanka https://mega.nz/#!YMAFhR4a!pZmf7OEWgzDzET1FLGsAOQ5XyVlvE8y4pJfB8KDNbMI . Any region firmware should work for the F model. If you want your specific one then check sammobile.com. I just linked to the other because it is a much faster download.
Problem encountred while installing original firmware
I tried to use Odin to install original firmware , I started the process but Odin got struck on sboot.bin (Also I read somewhere that whole process does not take more than 10 minutes). So please help me.
Which firmware did you try?
You might be able to use Kies to recover your device as well.

I downloaded it from http://www.teamandroiders.com/samsung-galaxy-s5-sm-g900h-stock-rom-firmware/ with PDA: I9500XXUBOL2. I want to know one more thing as I am in India so should I use INU or INS?

Oh geez...no wonder it isn't working. i9500 = S4. Really gotta be careful with that kind of thing.
INU is for unlocked from the factory
INS is for phones from a carrier
Either one should work. As mentioned, with the G900h, any firmware should work that is for that model, no matter the region. Use the one I posted and change the language or grab the one for India from sammobile.com though it'll take an hour or 2.
Edit: I see that it was just mislabeled as i9500, but the download says g900h after all.
Were you on 5.1.1 or 5.0 before you started this process?

Well I downloaded another one from http://firmwarefile.com/samsung-sm-g900h the second one, before it all started I was on 5.0 and the link you give does not work anymore. Anyway I tried with the firmware with upper link. And Odin is struck with sboot.bin for more than an hour. And have no idea what's going on? So what should I do?
Also someone suggested to use Pit. Should I use it?
No, don't use the pit. Try the newer firmware for 6.0

So I downloaded the 3rd link from http://firmwarefile.com/samsung-sm-g900h for newer version and try Odin 11.2 with it. I try two times to flash the firmware first time it struck on sboot.bin and second time it just showed fails(I used Odin with administrative rights this time) .Please see the attached images. Please tell me what should I do now. I want to repair it ASAP.
Not sure. This is pretty standard stuff. Have used Odin 1000 times and haven't had that much trouble with it. Sorry.

I think I should mention that the firmware I used was INS not INU and if you have a genuine link for version 6 for INU with fast download speed, please share it (different than sammobile because it has only fast speed only for premium users). Should I use PIT or try something else than Odin. Anything that might help please tell me. I have got this phone just a week ago and my parents are not gonna give me a new one so please help me.
I keep encountering sboot.bin error ,maybe there is a way to resolve it?
I'd just try to load TWRP and a custom rom at this point.

I want to know one more thing on the above link there is a custom firmware and there is a custom ROM with bootloader and all. So should I flash custom firmware or use the instructions given on thread to flash custom ROM?
The custom rom does not include bootloader and modem. You will need to flash via Odin if you were not on the same firmware as the software is based off of. I would flash them anyway, to be safe. You can skip the root part as it is not need. Follow the instruction in post 2 for stock rom users minus the root part. Make sure to boot directly back into TWRP recovery before it attempts to boot. You can load rom on SD card and any additional add-ons you want. Plenty of youtube guides on how to use Odin to flash TWRP and such.

Finally seen some progress, thank you very much. I successfully flashed TWRP recovery, but I got a couple of questions. Firstly I should flash ROM from recovery mode and then go to download mode to flash boot-loader and Modem files right? Should I flash ROM from SD card? And if this custom ROM causes problem is there a way to get to stock ROM? And is this custom ROM rooted or I have to root it via CF-Auto root or try anything else?
Rom might work without bootloader and modem. Just depends on your previous firmware. I would try and flash it though as it was recommended. Rom flash from SD card or internal. Either way should work. You will be able to go back to stock if you can find a firmware that works. It is already rooted.

It should work to reflash the original firmware through Odin. Just get the one that matches your baseband version.
