Is this Samsung Withing (Galaxy S2) a worthy candidate to consider to buy over the 3D ?
Got my upgrade override done yesterday..I want the 3D but maybe I should hold off a few weeks for upcoming Samsung Within ?
Thoughts ?
Seems like the 3D will be the winner because of dev support. Look at the evo vs the epic! Yet another battle between sammy and HTC and devs once again went with HTC.....if you care about custom roms and dev support that is.

Is this still going to be true ?
I believe that more devs will move over to the Within ?
the reviews for it are just to good ... compared to the 3vo ..
i could be wrong but that is what i think will happen
Why do people keep doing this? You come to a forum where the majority of us have a 3VO and love it and ask everyone which they would choose this phone or another. This is probably the 48463 thread.

LOL really is that so? What is there to believe when its already a fact. Most if not all the devs from the evo (which had the best dev support I've ever seen on any android phone) already have this phone. I highly doubt they will abandon HTC to move to a SamSuck. Just don't see it happening....sorry
Th 3D is the phone to have......

Sorry that i have an unbiased look on it...
Even if HTC developers don't move to it i'm sure it will have alot more Dev support than older Samsung phones ... which is why i WANT the 3vo but im wondering how much support the Within will get ...
The within only has 320000 pixels (800 x 400). The 3vo has a 960 x 540 resolution which is 518400. You're losing out 198400 pixels -- no thanks. I honestly feel like my EVO 4g looks horrible compared to my 3vo. I think in the long run the 3vo will have great developer support.

Nope.
I did a search before I posted it.
There's about 2 of them and they were all prior to the release of the 3D.
It's a valid question these days, especially with the way devices are being rolled out so often.

I havent had a chance to stop by a store to check the 3D out. Might take a walk during my lunch break.

Within will have more built in memory and super amoled screen.
Both running 1.2 GHz chipsets.
Within comes with 8 MP camera (2x5MB) for 3D.
These phones are very close and I think whichever phone will have bigger dev support will win.

I understand that you have hope, but just don't see people leaving HTC for sammy. The galaxy s 2 isn't that impressive if you ask me. It feels cheap, like really cheap based on what many reviews said on YouTube; which I can believe because every sammy phone I've felt had that cheap feel i.e nexus, galaxy series, epic etc. This is my look on it: sam has better gpus, HTCs have the better processors (qc). Sammy has better screens, HTC has better design. If you want to take a chance to see if sgs2 will have a much support by all means go ahead but I'm sticking with my 3D.

The within may not even be close to the evo 3d because they are low on super amoled + screens and their custom processor.. it depends what version sprint gets.
I'll be switching only because I've come to really value smartphone camera/multimedia features and HTC provided no upgrade in that dept (amazingly, given its camera is its distinguishing feature). We'll hopefully see by July24 what the devs can do in that dept tho.

Valid point.
Re: developer support, I think the galaxy s 2 gsm versions will have a lot of support, but not the Within since it will have different hardware (like wimax) and require specific customizations when being developed for.

I can understand that; me personally im not really in to taking photos on my phone but i must admit ive been taking a bunch of 3D photos lately. Camera isnt a big deal to me but the GPU is; it seems the adreno 220 was the right choice! I think HTC did a great job with the hardware they chose for this device, but i could live w/o the camera buttons and the side charger port lol....
HTC
I've not owned a Samsung in several years however my daughter has a Samsung Galaxy S that I have played with. I just like HTC better, navigation, touch screen feel, menus etc.
I personally would only wait if there was another HTC dual core phone coming soon from Sprint, I'm stuck with Sprint. I chose HTC
One thing is speaking for SGSII that while we spending many many manhours trying to get root Sammy gave the SGS to Cyanogen guys month ago.
That phone has a large support and dev community all over Europe already.
It will come out rooted and ready for CM.
It's a big plus IMHO.
While HTC is just promissing unlocked bootloade Sammy did it without any promisses or big words.

Instead of answering that question I would like to offer advice instead. There are a lot of people on Ebay that are selling used devices that are in mint condition, and have all the box, documentation, and what not, you could message each seller to find out what hboot it is. Obviously most of them will need to be told how to find that out for you.
The benefit of this is a cheaper buy, and you get what you want and your son won't know it isn't brand new, or be able to explain to him why you had to go that route. I think unless you are getting refurbished (and not even then sometimes) will you get hboot 1.4.
Hope I helped, cheers!

I have an upgrade as of December 1st and radio shack has the 3D on sale for $100 with a 2 year extension. I can't really beat that price on eBay. If it comes with hboot 1.5 its not really a big deal, just more of a hassle. I just have to read up on flashing using fastboot. If anything I will learn something new. Thanks for your input though.

Unless you just get extremely lucky, a new 3D, purchased from a brick and mortar store, or even online, from the same stores, will have hboot 1.5 on it. It looks like TeamEvil is close to having an S-OFF solution for the 1.5 hboot, so it might not matter what Hboot you have soon. No watermarked bootloader for me, thank you very much.
hboot 1.50 here, no biggie, not really a issue for ME. I have watermarked bootloader, blah blah blah. lol

Yeah you are quite right about that, definitely can't beat that for a new device (the 3D anyhow). Are you going for the 3D for him because of that upgrade price? For slightly more you could upgrade to something better. The 3D is going to die soon in terms of developer support, there aren't that many to begin with but specially with better hardware already out, or coming out soon the 3D while still young, is going to die off.
for that price you cant really beat it... 1.5 is a pain in the ass but it still works fine... maybe consider saving ur upgrade for the next "evo" instead?

I don't agree with this 100%. There is a lull in development, though, but mainly because cyanogenmod doesn't have any nightlies for the 3D (I think there's an alpha, but the thread is closed, and I can't find it on goo-inside.me). Also, with ICS just being released, devs are at work making a rom available.
Just look at the evo 4G. It's still going strong 18 months after release. Once CM gets going with CM9, and some more sense 3.5+ roms are leaked, preferably with some Wimax love, we should be seeing more roms.
This is just my opinion, and I could be wrong....so don't take what I say personal

That is a possibility, I do agree we will see a little more developer activity with sense 3.5, ICS, cm being used as a base when it is more complete, etc. however I meant things a little differently. While the 3D isn't the least popular device among users or developers it hasn't had the type of device that has received extraordinary development that a lot of other devices have even from the beginning of its release. The 4g started out so popular because it was a revolutionary device from sprint. The first 4g phone, and several other never before seen features so it started out so popular, and remains relevant because the hardware it has is still relevant. So the 4g was a special case. Aside from being 3D, which is really just a gimmick, the 3D didn't bring any revolutionary hardware or never before seen features to us, so it started out with less interest, and now the hardware is being beat by the latest devices, and devices coming soon. So aside from the things already mentioned that may give a little bump from A SELECT GROUP of developers it will die quickly. After the excitement of ICS and sense 3.5+ wears off the development of it will fade as less and less people still have it and developers get newer, better, more exciting, and popular devices.
Just like you, this is more of my educated guess and perception than fact, but I am willing to bet it is/will be fact soon.

I am going with the 3D because that's what he wants. He also said he was interested in the new nexus but I am not really a fan of Samsung. My first android was the moment and that left a bad taste in my mouth. Although I did learn allot about flashing roms and kernels with the POS. It forced me to learn. I would just hold off on my upgrade for the next HTC phone but I dont see one in the near future with the release of the evo design.

I'm sorry to hear about your trouble with the Samsung device. If the 3D is what he wants, that's cool. No more explanation needed, I had wondered if this was your decision or his. I hope you get that new evo design soon. Until then, plenty more can be done with the 3D to improve it. It certainly is not a bad phone, I like the hardware, it does what it should do. I definitely think some new software and features would really take things up a notch!

He didn't really say wich one he wanted more. He wants the nexus because its a google phone and he wants the 3D because of the 3D camera. Personally I wouldn't get the nexus because its a Samsung but if he didn't like the 3D function so much I would get him the nexus.

Which carrier is your son on now? If he is on Verizon, I'd just stay, and wait for the Nexus, which could be released in the next week and a half. If your son is on Sprint, get the 3D, or even consider the Epic Touch 4G (Galaxy S2). It may be made by Samsung, but it's a far cry from the moment of 2009. I see listings on craigslist, of people wanting to trade their 3D for an Epic Touch 4G all the time (even one made by me....).

It is ok, you can say it, you hated the piece of **** and you want the engineers that designed it to burn in a Christmas pageant fire. That will keep the topic on point for the holidays lol. The 3D camera is a neat little gimmick, but that's what it is, a gimmick. When glasses free 3D gets to the point of being very widespread, like all devices can display it regardless of being able to capture it, and the brightness, vivid color, and HD resolution comes along then we can consider it too cool to pass up. Even without the 3D, the hardware is still good so hopefully when that excitement wears off he will still be happy with it lol

Hello all, I am a iPhone 4s user (please no hating), but have a Galaxy Note on order (I have finally seen then Android Light). The reason I am posting in this forum, is a local shop is selling Evo 3D's, sim free £250 less than the Galaxy Note, (£250 as opposed to £500). I know the Note is a fantastic phone, read loads of reviews, and have played with one in a shop, but should I cancel the order and buy the Evo 3D. I have watched videos of the Evo on youtube, and it looks way cool, just looking some advice from folks who actually use one.
Hello, all, really hoping someone can lend an opinion, do want to miss the boat with the price being what it is.
Cheers
Depends on your needs mate. Evo3D is a great piece of hw, but its gettin outdated specwise & therefore the cheaper price.
I would wait until feb/march. There are new models comming (quadcores maybe with ics)

I surf the web loads, like the ideas of missing with custom roms, and use the phone to track my training and runs. Also use my hone as my
Primary camera. It's the price that is very appealing to me, I guess the question is, would I regret buying one. I actually really like the kinda retro look of the Phone.
The Camera's are nice. 3d Video and Pictures are cool to show your friends; you can even play them back on any 3d tv/monitors
The front facing camera is nice too, Voice chat is really nice
But I think there are other phones with better cameras if you don't need/want the 3d; don't quote me, but I believe that someone mentioned the Sensation having a better camera.

I think this is a great phone. Probabaly best you can buy spec wise right now. 3-6 months from now that will change, but this is the world of electronics.

I thought this community was meant to be friendly, not abusive, I simply wanted advice on the Evo 3D from guys at this forum who usually have very constructive and interesting opinions, opinions I generally value.

I wouldn't say at all the the hardware is getting outdated at all. It's a really great piece of hardware and I love everything about the phone. I've had it since September and still not one complaint!
For half the price of the Note, the Evo 3D is a go !
It's a cool phone, screen resolution is awesome, the 3d is cool to play, watch, and show to friends, althought it don't play heavy 1080p videos, i would choose it.
Got mine last november, loving it, and very anxious for the release of ICS.
I just wanted to know what would it take for you to stay with HTC? It seems like most people on here dont like the galaxy s2 but always say that when sprint gets the galaxy nexus there gona get it. Me personally both of my lines are are eligible for upgrades and i passed on the iphone rush and galaxy s2. The 1st evo to me completely changed the way i did and will always look at a phone. Not the iphone or any blackberry but the evo4g. The evo 3d although wasnt as ground breaking still made me a happy htc customer. So i ask....what will HTC have to give us in there next major sprint phone to keep people from jumping ship to the galaxy? For me its basically just ICS and LTE. Possibly a camera as good as the og evo as well. So before anyone says it ill say it cool story bro....stop trolling blah blah blah....i just seriously wana know bc it seems like alot of people are losing faith in HTC
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
Stop using ****ty cameras, stop using ****ty screens, use better speakers, change the damn phone design for once. They need to get it, yes the first Evo was revolutionary but that ship has sailed. Change the design on the phones and make them thinner and make sense optional. It wastes too much of the phones resources because of how bloated it is. That happens ill consider coming back to HTC but it's not likely so I probably wont. And FYI the camera in the Evo 4g sucked even more than the one in the 3D does. All their cameras suck that ive used.
Make Sense removable.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
They should make sense faster. I'm on mean Rom right now and its blazing fast. I don't see why HTC couldn't have made it as fast as that. And what everybody else says. Camera, screen, thinner. Personally I love sense, but it can be better

Not planning on going anywhere here. Just waiting for the quadcore S4 chip HTC phone to drop for sprint personally. LTE modem being built directly in the die is interesting to me...
though I hear the complaints about camera, but personally I find it suitable for a phone, if they make it better, then so be it.
As for making phones thinner....im not on that boat here. Id rather have them the same thickness and size they are now. Holding those thin iPhones just doesn't feel right in the hand to me. Also when you go thinner you sacrifice the already slim battery life...

Im not to worried about a thinner phone myself because i always put them in big cases like the defender or ballistic. I agree with the speaker comment though....i never realized how bad it was until i heard my friends iphone playing pandora on speaker

An HTC Nexus device.
HTC needs to innovate once again and get rid of the "cookie cutters", which have only slight differences. They should focus on 3-4 models across the board, ranging from entry level to high end.....their should be NO differences in look or features between carriers. This would also force carriers to focus more on improving their networks rather than flaunting that they have a "better" phone, which is what they should be doing.
Major (Android) updates in a timely fashion..... If we get ICS by June....and I do not believe it will be any earlier, that will make a full 8 months since source code was dropped to the open community. It is also well known that manufacturers have the code months before it is granted open source. With the expertise and resources that HTC possesses, 4-6 months is ample time to build and push an update....
Also i was on a service call and had to do service in one of sprints corporate buildings in fairfax virginia. A sprint tech there told me that the galaxy nexus will have face regonizition technology to unlock your phone. Hopefully htc has something similiar

yeah the only thing that might get me to jump the gun early is depending on the details of when we will see quadcore from qualcomm in phones. The current S4 Quadcore chip is the APQ8064 which is paired with the Adreno 320 BUT that chip is geard toward more tablet and mobile computing devices rather than phones.
Reading more and more around it seems the most we will see at lease in the "near future"(this year) is the MSM8960 which is their dualcore S4 but its paired with the Adreno 225...
Think I read the time we'd see even the APQ8064 is around the holidays too. So maybe next year for qualcomm quadcore S4 chips in phones?
The dualcore S4's are real improvement though still having modem's built in the die and getting the improvement there no one else is thus far...
I am in the minority but I prefer sense UI to asop. ICS is no different. However that is a very small deal when it comes to which phone I choose next. I have the EVO 4g and that sold me to get EVO3D on opening day. While I stick with HTC? Sure but only if they make best product to choose from that can be rooted. They best step it up because gIII looking good and all it would take is Motorola to unlock and I'd possibly leave. They have me.....for the moment

Those are all things that the Rezound has over this phone. The camera has been quoted to be one of the best available on a smart phone, and it has a higher screen density than the GNex because of 720p on a smaller screen. Design is different as well.
Oh ok....thanks for clearing that up.

Never really had a problem with the form factor of the EVO or the EVO 3D. If I could get the same Sony cam that's in the 4s, better camera/camcorder software, like the 3D aspect, so improve upon that. 1080p recorder. Definitely must be more powerful, so either a quad-core processor or a dual dual-core processor works for me.

Just curious what people think about jumping from the amaze to the one s? Normally the no sd card is a huge deal breaker but the development piece is very attractive, just last week I checked n they had nothing just a couple sense roms checking today they have very functional cm9 already with radio working and miui with camera working too. The devs we have I see are working at those roms too, but I wonder what makes there development so much faster? From what I read they are also waiting for source. I love the amaze more because of the sd card support, hardware buttons, and NFC. I have a one s that is coming in today that was originally intended for my sister but thinking about making a jump or not...

I wouldn't think it's a good idea to upgrade, but I guess if you already have one coming in you could go for it. The S4 processor is better than the S3, but you get a Pentile SAMOLED screen and smaller, non-changeable battery.
Also wrong section.

Well I tested one before battery life is better even tho smaller, I never understood what pentile has to do with anything it still looks good. I'm messing around with it now its definetly faster the s4 is really fast the way beats audio is integrated is real nice too its way louder. I wanted people's thoughts more then actually answering whether I should get it or not I guess but my bad if its the wrong section.

It seems they don't have source just yet for that phone period but I understand what you mean about the amaze not having source for drivers. It really sucks I'd much rather have the amaze I actually had the galaxy s2 and development for it is booming but enjoyed the better camera of the amaze much more.

Lol maybe its just me I find myself hardly complaining about bugs, but definetly it seems like people love to do it. Thinking ill just hold out with the amaze till something better comes along by the end of this year. I just wish htc would stop holding out on us this phone is great with development being easier for our devs I'm sure it could be relevant for a long time.

Dude, regardless of what people say about One S, you keep repeating how great it is. Obviously, you like it better than Amaze, and its normal - every future phone has to be better than previous models (thou, this is not really the case here imo because besides S4, little extra camera features, and Beats everything else is a step backwards) - so just go get it and enjoy it. Its becoming irritating anyway to see every once in a while topics like "should i get One S or stay with Amaze?". Thats why there are numerous reviews on youtube, specs, and all kinds of info, so people can decide for themselves. True, development here is kind of slow compared to other phones, but thats how it is - I still love my Amaze, and when comes the time to upgrade, Id be looking for build quality and much better specs, not the number of custom ROMs, because here there are and always will be developers for every phone.

Next time you want to talk about one s, go to the previously opened threads or to One S's forum, this one here is for Amaze 4G, so the focus is on that device, not someone's turmoils whether to upgrade or not. Also, if you choose your device based on dev, you can go back to HTC Magic - there are so many ROMs for this one, you will be wowed

The screen is the exact same size. Not trying to correct you or troll, bit take your amaze to a t mobile store and see for yourself.
The burst mode on the one S is incredible and all hut
-SD card trade off is too much a dealbreaker for me.
-VGA front facing camera is also a significant compromise for me
-The S4 processor does out perform the S3 substantially, but the S3 still performs so well its not a huge deal to me.
-hardware keys on the amaze do own indeed
-I'm not a huge fan of Sense 4 at ALL. I do love the look of the translucent status bar... But I absolutely hate Sense 4s recent apps. Just looks like browser windows. Boring. Vanilla Android's recent apps that are on 3.6 are far better looking to me. Definitely stickin with 3.6.
-not to mention the lack of a dedicated search button. I hate that they're leaning towards software only for search functionality. I use my search key all the time =L

I was already off contract with tmobile and could have gotten a one s as an upgrade but decided on finding a used amaze instead - the main reasons being all of what other users have posted before, plus that the hardware isn't supposed to be compatible with tmobiles upgraded network speeds that are supposed to happen later this year. If the upgrade is going to make me go back on a 2 year contract, I'd want the phone to keep up with the network.

I just upgraded and chose the Amaze over the one s. It seams to me the areas where the amaze are better is a bigger deal than the areas where the one s is better.
amaze: changeable battery, sd card, better camera,
one s: beats audio, thinner and lighter, slightly better processor.
The sd card and battery are big deals. When i used the camera on the one s I could not get a good macro shot, where on the amaze i could make out the dust on the dust. If it comes down to a better camera vs beats audio, i used my camera a ton more than i listen to music on it. Also if your willing to root you can have beats on the amaze. As far as the processor, the amaze felt smoother to me changing screens and such, maybe the one s will be better after sense 4.0 gets some updates?
The only thing that had me thinking and almost got me to get the one s, was how thin and light it was. Im happy i chose the amaze, i just dont see the one s as a replacement, more of a step sideways and you choose which one fits you better.
I've made the jump! I favor the One S over the Amaze, personal preference. Once you use the One for a few days, you'll understand too...

And last but not least:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1581663&highlight=should+i+get+the+one+s
I'm sure there's quite a few other ones as well.
Hope these help you decide though.
And if those aren't enough here's what I think:
Personally I wouldn't buy any phone without a shutter button because it makes it that much easier for me to use.
The Amaze let's you go straight to camcorder or camera from the lock screen/off screen simply by holding down the corresponding button.
This works wonders for when I want to capture moments with my kids.
And the One S? No removable battery, no microSD card...what is it, an iPhone?
I think it's original production name was iphONE S.
Seriously, think about it. Lol.
Before you buy any phone check to see if there's a good developer community for it. What makes these smart phones smarter is solid development.
You're better off going for the s3. I know i am
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G
If sd card, removable battery, dedicated camera/camcorder button and NFC are important then you should go for the Amaze. On the other hand if none of that is important then I'd suggest going for the One S. From what I've seen, the One S has a pretty good developing community and HTC is currently supporting it as it's one of their flagship phones. While the Amaze is left in the dust sadly.

I agree. I went from the Amaze (well still have it as a backup) to the Galaxy Nexus, so I'm in your reverse situation. Honestly, the hardware of the Amaze is top notch, so in that regard you wouldn't be disappointed.
However, if you are looking for a variety of things to flash and robust development, the Amaze is really not a good phone to get. It's no fault of the few developers we do have, but more a lack of proper drivers and source thanks to HTC abandoning this device.
If development is important to you, go with the HTC One S (better processor, GPU and screen) or the SGS3 (better everything) when it comes out on the 21st. Both will have better dev communities since they are flagship devices.

i might try to get tmobile to send me one as a replacement device, or if someone wants to trade there one s for my amaze.
Purchasing either one right now is a poor consumer decision and would be very premature. I'm a fan of the Amaze, but not happy that HTC has abandoned it. I'd wait to play with the S3 and then weigh your options and decide what's most important to you.
