If my evo 3d is connected to wifi, does 3g automatically turn off? and can I receive calls/texts over wifi?
If wifi is in use, 3G gets disabled (atleast that's how mine is). And you can't receive calls and texts via wifi but you will still receive them with your cell's radio (not 3G though)
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
But your phone will activate the 3G radio in order to send or receive MMS. MMS does not send or receive over WiFi regardless of circumstances.
Does WiFi or 3g use more battery?

3g uses more
3G is only data not phone service. Meaning u can still receive sms and phone calls if 3G is turned off.

If you actually watch your notification bar, 3g turns on momentarily for the mms send and receive
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
It's all automatic. In order of power usage (highest to lowest)
4G -> 3G -> Wifi
You don't have to manually turn off 3G; the phone puts it to sleep when you go to either 4G or Wifi, and only turns it on if and when you need it. Again, it's all automatic.

Yeah u can turn it off and still receive text and calls. Like right now I'm on WiFi with mobile network off.
Turning it off when u do not need data will save battery also.

If at night I just turn off mobile network, then nothing will sync right? Then I don't have to mess with turning background data off and on. And I'll still get texts and calls

Right. As long as wifi is disabled as well then nothing will sync. And you will still get calls and texts.

You don't have to do anything! 3G goes to sleep as soon as you connect to a Wifi network. Turning off Mobile Network just adds an extra step to your routine.

actually on most phones it will drop to "1X" because it doesnt use wifi or 3G. it will still say "3G" if data is turned on in some cases because that is the way the software programmers intended it to be. if no data or wifi it can still send a text because it uses a different type of data transfer than when you are browsing the internet or doing any other type of data transfer.
thats the way i understand it and i think im right. please correct me if im wrong.
Happy Flashing! (oh wait, this isn't the 4g forum)

Little bit more info needed:
Rom?
HBOOT?
Kernal?
Enable always on mobile data in your mobile network settings. Otherwise, it only turns on when a request is sent.

I get this sometimes. I'm on a stock, un-rooted phone, with the latest OTA. I will get this even if I'm in the middle of doing something, and click on a new link. The 3G icon is just grey, and I get no connection. Never an error, about no connection. It's been happening to me for a while, and it even did this on previous phones. So, for me, it's the network, and not the Evo 3D.
*I do have "Enable always-on mobile data checked*
I am always on wifi so I don't need LTE, 4G, HSPA or 3G.... is there any way I can force 2G or edge only on an AT&T locked Galaxy Note i717? I've looked all over the forums and people say go into the menu and select that option, but it doesn't work. Same with apps, don't work. I've read flashing a different modem will enable that option to work, but won't I need an unlocked phone to do so?

Well like I said I'm on wifi all day and don't need LTE killing my battery for no reason. And, so I can still send or receive pictures.
LTE/Data is automatically disabled when you connect to wifi. No need to do anything. It will turn itself on automatically to receive/send mms.

So by forcing 2G I'm not going to see any battery improvement since it's automatically turned off since I'm always on wifi?

That is Apple's "innovation" for you right there. This is Android. Android turns off cellular data when on wifi and only turns it on when needed for MMS.
You notice how when on wifi you don't see a 4g icon? Send an mms and you will see it pop up long enough for the message to be sent and then disappear.
That is your phone automatically enabling/disabling cellular data when needed/not needed.
Ok, well to get this back on track I'd like to force 2G or even 3G no matter what. Any solution for me?
Dial *#*#4636#*#* and hit phone information. Scroll down and in the drop down list and choose GSM Only. Reboot.

Nope. Even on wifi, say If you're sending or receiving MMS it will use your data (4G or LTE). Also, unless you have it turned on while the phone is asleep, your phone will switch back to 4G for downloading or synchronize data. 2G takes longer to download information because of he slower speed which causes the phone to drain battery because the phone would still be downloading the data.
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke

I can't select anything except for LTE/GSM/CMDA auto. If I pick anything else it reverts back to that.
Hey guys, (Did extensive search before posting this)
Whenever I get a MMS the messages show a download button but will not download. I have tried turning wifi on and off, turning mobile data on and off, rebooting, using stock app and Go SMS and nothing is working. I looked in APN settings but do not know if they are right or not.
The issue just started recently, I have had the phone about a week and they seemed to work at first.
Please help,
This is driving me crazy and is frankly unacceptable in 2012. I saw some threads about old Galaxys having this issue.
You have to be on mobile data without wifi for them to download.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Thanks for the reply, but I have tried turning wi fi off, which in turn reverts to mobile data and still no success. Could it be that I also use a micro cell? My carrier service is literally the worst possible at my house without the micro cell. This is quite unfortunate if so.
I think wifi has to be off when it is initially coming through and yes, a micro cell will do it. Is it a voice micro cell or data?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Its a voice micro cell, but it also transmits a 3G signal. Not sure of the speed since I always use wi fi.
This is boggling my mind. Are you telling me that it is not possible to recieve a freaking MMS message created in 1982 (sarcastic) on a 2012 LTE device if I am in a wifi network. WTH. That is crazy to me.
So are these images gone or do I need to turn off wifi and turn off the micro cell to download?
Thanks for your help btw.
So I disconnected wifi and disconnected my microcell and clicked download on Go SMS and nothing, error message. Pulled up the stock SMS app and clicked download and after a half minute or so the picture appears. The picture then also shows in Go SMS.
I guess the solution is no MMS while at home which is a bit frustrating coming from another device/platform where this problem would not occur.
Thanks again.
I have the international GS3 on AT&T. My phone automatically downloads MMS if only mobile data is on or both wifi & mobile data are on. I believe it is your microcell causing your disruption OP.
Sorry, my international S3 also only downloads MMS if only mobile data is on.. I have yet to see it auto download when Wi-Fi was on. I would say it could be the microcell in this case though.

When mms comes in the WiFi should temporarily shut off and the radio picks up 3 or 4g in order to download it. U honestly won't notice any seperation. If u honestly can't receive them, check your apn settings

Well that's your problem bud. You're turning your wife on, not the wifi But on a serious note, this is an intended feature of android. When you turn on wifi it turns off mobile data to save your mobile data. If you dont mind me asking, why do you want your 4G to stay put if you are on wifi?

Alright thanks guys. Is there any way to turn this feature off? I want to keep mobile data on because I have really bad service at my house and I am trying to analyse it a bit.
You can just turn wifi off. You can't be connected to 2 data sources at the same time (that isn't an android thing). If wifi is off, you'll connect using 3g/4g instead.

Edit mods can delete or lock this. Just read that wifi calls still count against your plan. That's a joke.

This happened to me, although I caught it after I only used a few minutes. You need to call T-Mobile and ask them to activate free wifi calling. Even though your phone is calling over wifi, calls will be charged against your minutes unless this is activated. You may be able to do this on their web site, but I had to call them to get it done.
I find it objectionable that they don't let you know that you need to do this in any of their documentation.
How do you run out of minutes its 2013 they have plans with unlimited minutes lol
