Alright so I just got a Samsung Fascinate through a trade here on XDA and everything seemed to be in working order...except for the actual software in the phone. For one, the home button doesn't take me home, it simply takes me to a blank screen. I can pull down the notification bar and everything...but I can't get home to actually access and apps or anything. The only way I can access anything is when I hold down the home button to get most recent apps.
I've tried multiple times to hard reset..battery pulls..everything. Someone please help me out. I contacted the previous owner of the phone and he said you just have to press the home button a little harder...that didn't work.
It obviously works because it takes me to a blank screen and allows me to access the most recent apps..but it won't actually take me home.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance guys
Considering the Hines button is capacitive, pushing harder does nothing.
Is the phone rooted or stock?
If stock, try to Odin fresh stock. If rooted, try a different rom
Try installing a different launcher such as Adw, launcher pro or zeam to see if the problem goes away.
Now it does have a crack, but I don't think thats the problem because when I press it it still takes me to a blank screen so it must work.
And he gave me those options..and said it was semi-rooted? Considering I just came fresh from a Moto Droid I really know nothing about the process. Is Odin like SBF? I just want to have the phone in its original state to see if I even like it first..

I would second this suggestion. Often, launchers can have individual settings for what the home button does (i.e., with Go Launcher EX, the home button can be set to take you to your home screen, and if already on your home screen, pressing the home button will open up a shortcut, app, preview homescreens, etc.). So, by installing another launcher, it my clear away whatever setting is on the phone you got (i.e., launching a blank screen). Another option would be to go into your Setting > Manage Applications, and find your default launcher. Open it, and then "Clear Defaults."
Alright I got it to work by restoring completely with odin and changing the home screen launcher.
Thanks guys! It's much appreciated

Hello all, first post and hopefully it should not be very difficult to resolve....
I had LauncherPro installed to my Bell Atrix, and then decided i wanted to remove.
Using Titanium Backup, I froze alot of Moto sys apps as per this article... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=972459
before removing LPro, I unfroze Home 2.2.1 and then rebooted the device. Now it will boot up but i have no home screen... just blank.
Any help would be appreciated...
OK figured it out on my own... the best way to learn !!!!!
- Enter Fastboot:
Hold Volume down + power until you see Fastboot at the top left
Use volume down to scroll down to "Early USB Enumeration"
- Phone now tells me that I have no homescreen and took me to Market
- Downloaded LP again
- Reboot, and chose LP as the default homescreen.
SO looks like i am back to where I started from, now i need the right instructions to remove LP correctly. I'll do a search for that, the answer is out there somewhere
Could you not goo back to the thread above, re enable the blur stuff, revert to blur before removing launcher then remove launcher.
To be prompted for a home screen I think you need to go to settings/applications/manage launcher and then clear defaults. If should then sask you which home screen to use, our out will just go to blur.
OMG! I have an Atrix! [XDA app]

I did the same a while back. Another fix is to use a desktop and the online market to send a launcher to your phone through there. Just make sure to unfreeze blur and everything associated with it before you remove any other launcher. Personally, I unfreeze everything before making these types of changes.

Last night I gave my gf my s2 to play a game with. When she was playing the voice command thing kept coming on, she probably at some point double pressed the home button and that happened. I did notice it though that it came up some times when she was just touching the screen.
Anyhow, when she gave it back to me whenever I was pressing the home button instead of going to the regular homescreen it would show me something completely different I never saw before. After rebooting the home button worked like before. Anyone recognize the "different" home screen?
Looks like the desk clock found in the clock app (to the right of the stopwatch, you need to scroll right to see it).
You are right, just checked and it's that. I don't know how it got activated though.
Wait, I think I do. The phone was being charged with one of those portable battery changer things (Veho Pebble) and the phone was probably tricked or something thinking it was docked or whatever.
I have the exact same issue. When I press the Home button, this app comes up instead of the launcher. I tried setting the launcher using "Home Switcher" app, but it does not stick, I mean, when I start "Home Switcher" again it says "Your default Home app is (not determined yet)".
Anyone has any idea how to solve this?
Has anyone had a problem after you download a new launcher and it installs it will give you the option to start it or use the stock. But if you do not start it and hit the home button it will Disappear and not give it as an option by hitting the home button after that. Its on my app list but i have no way to restart it.
Any Ideas? Never had this problem on my HTC inspire..

Never had that problem, but do switch between launchers all the time by using Home Switcher. Free in Android Market
Try resetting the defaults for all the launcher apps. (Launcher, Go Launcher, ADW Launcher, etc). This way, the next time you hit home, it will ask you again what launcher you want to use.
I have an idea
You can try installing some launchers (like Niagara for example)
And then set it to launch the app launcher automatically when opening the dual screen. Hope it works for you
Just gave it a shot. It does work as far as the launcher opening on the left screen, but pressing home on the left side takes you back to launcher 2.
This means you'd have to turn off the screen and turn it back on or close and open the case and reunlock the phone to get it to open.
Great idea though, I thought it would force it open on the main screen, but nope!

Some launchers work like opening an app. Niagara is one of them. You can make a shortcut for it, in floating bar?
I use Nova Launcher on the main display and quickly 3-finger swipe apps to the Dual Screen if needed. My Dual Screen homescreen only has widgets on them., I don't use the launcher on it.
Could you use launcher hijack to make it work? Like the Kindle Fires solution for the stock launcher replacement, that opens the launcher of choice upon pressing the home button?

Launcher Hijack does not work, I just tried it.
I use Microsoft's launcher. And usually Swiftkeys. You would think with Duo coming out in a year these products would support this phone. I'm a little disappointed they don't yet.
I found a slightly quirky but reliable method to do this. See my attachments, same launcher on both screens. The one with the notification bar is the main screen, one without is dual screen.
It works with home launchers with a way to get to their home screen via shortcuts. I use nova
Instructions:
0. Make sure you have navigation bar selected instead of gestures in phone settings>display>navigation bar
1. Install App Cloner (the real one, not on Google Play) and make yourself a duplicate of nova or etc.
2. Backup your current launcher settings
3. Open and restore from backup on the second copy of your launcher
4. Install Pie Control from Google Play or etc
5. You can setup pie control as you like. You'll likely have the home button setup as one of your gestures. But this home button will only of course open a single launcher, you can't change it to use a different launcher on each screen. So, add another gesture that you'll use for the second screen.
6. On your selected gesture, set what it does to shortcut>nova (it will be the second nova on the list)>default page (this is the main home screen of your launcher).
7. To get to your launcher on the second screen, just tap your second screen, then do your gesture you set to the shortcut on your main screen. You'll see your fave launcher open on the second screen.
I know this isn't ideal, but it works great for me and if there's still anybody out there looking for this, here you go.
Anyone else use Nova Launcher? Seems the phone does not like to keep Nova Launcher as default after a reboot. (Haven't tried others)
Is it a launcher problem or a phone problem?
[edit] OK. Got a response from Nova. Apparently it's a Google/Samsung thing that needs to be worked out. But, trying to restart and keep setting Nova as Default at some point may stick.
Another issue I was having was not being able to press anything right after returning home. That's also a Google issue that can't be fixed on Nova or any other launcher's part.
I see the same thing on my T-Mo S21+. After I reboot the nova home screen comes up as expected but a default home application is gone in settings (none are checked). Using "Close All" takes me to the Samsung home screen instead of the Nova home screen. Setting the default home back to Nova seems to fix the problem (until the next reboot). Fortunately, I rarely reboot...
No idea why.
I had this start on my S20+ after One UI 3 update, I mentioned it on Reddit and someone said it was a known issue and would be fixed in January. Obviously not fixed yet as I too still have this problem, it seems intermitent though, hopefully they will fix it soon.
For what it's worth Nova (6.2.18) works fine for me. Have probably rebooted phone 10 or so times.
Had my S21 last monday, this problem happened during the first hours of use, and has completely disappeared from now on. (Nova 2021 here)
I'm an Action Launcher user, and I haven't had that issue with my device (S21+).

So probably a Nova issue. Guess will have to wait for an update.
as mentionned above, I don't have the issue anymore with Nova 2021...
What about this other issue? Upon going to home screen from any app. When you immediately press any other icon or do any gestures, nothing but a flash happens.
Upon further inspection. There are little marks on the both lower corners. They disappear after about a second. I think that's what's causing the screen flash. When they disappear, no flash.
Is that a Nova thing or One UI thing? I haven't deviated from how how use/setup the launcher last few years.

I use lawnchairway better than nova for my needs
I didn't have any issues with Nova on my S21 Ultra. I'm giving the stock One UI 3 launcher a try after using Nova for almost 10 years.

The little white marks is google assistant, if you swipe from the corner it will come up. But it's not the cause of the problem unfortunately. Try going to the app switcher first and then going home & pressing something quick. The screen flash doesn't happen on Niagara launcher for me, but the google assistant indicator still comes up. Wish there was a way to fix the screen flash though.
> Another issue I was having was not being able to press anything right after returning home.
This is a gestures + custom launcher issue, it's not solvable by the vendor (Samsung) or the launcher developer (Nova dev) unless Google does something about it.

This is no longer the case for me. My T-Mo S21+ (NYC) updated the firmware yesterday (AUAG), and Nova now remains the default home screen after reboots (and anything else).
fwiw
Nevermind. I just rebooted again, and the default home was no longer set to anything. After resetting it to Nova, it stuck, but whatever the problem is, it still exists. Sorry for the false hope.
