I noticed a thread about "The best ROM"...When I recently purchased my gTablet, I was wondering the same thing. I realize that best is subjective and started to do my homework on finding out what works best for me. I am not sure I found that, but I do like the ROM that I currently have, so best or not, I am happy. It occurs to me though, that others will have a similar question. From people who have used more of these ROMs than I have can we put together a list of ROMs, and what they were built to do?
Like anything, there are compromises, and developers need to make decisions along the way. They can chose to optimize this or that, perhaps not both due to some constraints, time, resources, etc. So, I guess I am asking, what ROMs are optimized for what?
Is there a ROM that plays games better than others?
Is there a ROM that plays video better than others?
Is there a ROM that is screaming fast compared to others?
Is there a ROM that allows for more customization that others?
I do not know what the exact criteria is, or what people are looking for from their tablets. I bought mine as a toy. I wanted to play with it and muck around (something I was not willing to do with my phone, well because it is my phone and if I broke it, I would not be happy).
I think that apps were the most important thing to me. I wanted a ROM that was stable and could play lots of apps. I ended up choosing the VEGAn Gingerbread ROM. I know the camera does not work for anything. I believe it has issue with videos, but the apps work great. I am good with this combination.
So, again I ask (after dribbling on and on) what ROMs are optimized for what?
really, the biggest diffierences are the interfaces, but honestly, changing the launcher can accomplish a GUI change in just about any rom.
essentially, there are 2 Android versions available for a stable rom, Froyo (TNT Lite, Vegan 5.1.1, and Calkulin I think, never used it, so I'm not sure) and Gingerbread (Vegan Ginger, and CM7). There should be major differences between Froyo based roms, and Gingerbread based roms. One similarity between them is that they are both designed for phones, not tablets. Changing a launcher will help give it a tablet optimized feel.
I currently use Brillian Corners (1.2 based Vegan 5.1.1 Rom) with Launcher Pro. I use Launcher Pro simply becuase I like the customizable LP widgets. VTL Launcher (a custom version of ADW, basically) is a Launcher that's been modified for tablets.
In addition to the roms themselves, there are custom kernels, that optimize the performance of the machines. Pershoot and Clemsyn are the foremost experts in custom kernel development and tweaking.
So, you can choose a rom based on your needs...as you mentioned, apps. Vegan 5.1.1 worked well for me, to run apps. I had flashed Clemsyn's kernel to run with it. I could still watch videos if hte need would arise, and the camera worked...but honestly, how good can a 1.3 MP camera work on ANY rom...
Anyway, I then flashed to Brilliant Corners to move to the 1.2 dev branch. Roebeet discovered that pershoots Adam kernal already worked, so he had him port it over and include it in the install. So, now, I basically have the same exact setup I had before, only on a 1.2 dev branch for future flashing ease.
I'm running LauncherPro, since I didn't much care for the VTL Launcher's lack of widgets.
Vegan Ginger and CM7 wouldn't work for me, since I do need video support, to keep the 7 year old busy when I want him to calm down.
In any case, customization is the key. You can have any rom, with any kernel, and find what works for you.
The only Rom available that is specifically designed for tablets is Honeycomb. There is no official version, and I didn't include it as an option above becuase it's still in Alpha stage. I wouldn't recomend it for anyone that wants an everyday Rom. It's mainly good for people that want to test it, and assist in the developemnt of it. Once all the bugs are worked out, OpenGl drivers are found, and it's tweaked for optimum performance, then it's a no brainer to go to it. It's made for tablets, it's powerful, and with the correct video driver optimization, it will be, by far, the best Rom available.
This is why I try to encourage people to go to the 1.2 dev branch if they plan on flashing a "legacy" Rom like TNT Lite, or Vegan 5.1.1. If they go to the 1.2 equalivilent, then they are halfway to Honeycomb when it get's ironed out.
if you plan on sticking with Gingerbread, then by all means, stay with 1.1, and use Vegan Ginger or CM7.
I'm about to get a X10 from a friend of mine, and was curious about what the best rom/kernel for the phone is.
So far it looks like cyanogen mod 7.0 is going to be the best thing I could flash it with, but it kinda bugs me that the camera doesn't work 100%.
I'm also hearing that 2.3 will be officially released soon, but knowing how my carriers usually operate with updates that will be 3 months till I see that.
Whats the closest thing to a vanilla android experience with full functionality?

Wolfbreaks 009 isnt quite vanilla but is my favorite thus far. Has some new ported gingerbread features from achotjan and it's speed is unreal. I use it with the 3.62 kernel by goro, doomlords, and zkernel are all amazing. Just amazing all around, and if not that use erickwill's 2.1 ROM. When gingerbread comes out the camera drivers will be ported to gingerbread ROMs so you shouldnt worry about not getting a working 2.3 ROM

If you're looking for some extra speed, take a look at Power To The People kernel. Overclocked to 1.2GHz, but might cause some instability, and fry the device if used for a long time.
I wouldn't want to overclock.
I don't see the point in doing it on smartphones, especially when the battery life is already low.

just finished rooting it, now im running titanium backup.
Then for kernel you might want to check out zKernel-failsafe, no overclock, no underclock. Stable and fast. The stock kernel is slow.
Just testeds both Wolf's and Ultima 5... got some tiny issues with 3G band on Ultima and I wasnt able to open the NFS Drift Game in both of them...
Tryed CM7 + custom Kernel with a good response, all of this using BB 67. The only trouble I got with CM7 was the slow response from GPS...
I might go back to Stock Eclair + custom Kernel till the update comes out...

I was looking at the CM7 Rom but was afraid that everything would be slow/laggy on the xperia.
There are many good Roms for our Xperia x8 in xda, But it is hard to determine which one is right for you,, when i first started i faced a lot of problems deciding on which rom to use,, eventually i found out that it depends on the user on what he wants in his rom and chose the appropriate rom accordingly, SO i am going to include all the roms i have used and give detailed information , so you can choose according to your needs

#10.Stornmix: This is a very recent rom, It has the looks. The framework is beautiful, However the visuals in my opinion has been given more importance than speed in this which makes it slow, and many people i asked said that it really lags when playing hd games. #13.AtiFroyo: This is Based On Minicm6,,so yeah it uses a little older version. As with all froyo roms, this one provides good gaming performance. But again as it uses older version you won't get as much functionality as Gingerbread roms

Thinks To consider Before Flashing A custom Rom: If you have doubts about anything gain more knowledge about it by asking people in Xda. If you want to install roms that requiere Custom Kernels Make sure you know how to unlock your bootloader
Warning: If you do anything without being sure about it you might end up with a bricked phone, and Hard bricks cannot be fixed on your own

well, then let`s not forget either miniCM7-2.0.6, which, by the way, I personally like a lot, since I first tried it, I`m stuck on it!!
i posted it because many people look on the Development section,, and this thread is specially for beginners, those threads are a way more advanced and may look confusing to beginners
What would be useful is a list of pros and cons (or a list of what doesn't work) for each one.
For instance - i really like GingerCruzt, but can't get MMS to work on it.
GingerDX is an all rounder - but maybe has some battery drain issues (although Doixanh is really really improving it).
Just a thought
(and if anyone knows why MMS won't work on GingerCruzt, but works on my phone in GingerDX, please let me know!)
I have two propositions:
- tomek3pl H_Stock ROM. Has bloatware removed and contains good additions (App2SD e.g.) and a lot of people like stock
- HAKA's GingerFroyo, which is very careful with the battery.

Fast Stable. No bugs for me . no wifi bugs no battery drain.
i use'd this since v003 and now im running v013 it's fast run's great game's like NFS SHIFT and PES 2011 great customisation;
only thing i dont like is stock launcher (launcher pro) i much more like Go Launcher more customisations more fun bit faster and more stable

Even Dox admitted there are some bugs in his roms ,, Gdx one of the best rom but still there are lot of other good roms like MINI CM7 AND GC
I was using gdx till v14. Agree with many - a great rom overall.
But since last 7 days I have used Fd v1.0.0 It has been an absolutely amazing experience. Fast, zippy, stable and I love the active launcher. I have not found a single bug, except one inconvenience that when you open contacts, sometimes it can take a little lag before opening; gardly a deal breaker !
Other than that my congrats and kudos to the developer on this amazing achievement.
P.S,: I have used maps while walking navigation last night in central london, phone was searching for signal in underground trains for 1 hour, used wi-fi and web browsing for 45 mins or so, fiddled with settings (ultrabrightness ticked), and still have got 40% left after 24 hours !

well you should make a backup before flashing you phone with a custom rom, that ensures that if nedded you can go back to its default rom,, Use Xrecovery to do that, Just in case you havent backed up your previous data but want the default rom and kernel back, just download the newest se kernel and flash it using flashtool..

If you just wanna try a different ROM, yes you can use xrecovery to make a back up of your actual ROM and install a new one, but
1.- it is not necessary that you flash any kernel, since there are already a lot of roms to try with no risk involved, such as unlocking bootloader etc.....
2.- at any given moment that you want to return to a brand new factory stock ROM, you just plug your phone with PC companion or SEUS and choose repair and you are done, this will unroot your phone and reset it at factory settings, any doubt just let me know

I'm new to rooting and changing phone's ROM and kernel (rooted my X10 just 2 months ago), so I wanted to ask about main advantages of using different ROM and kernel... right now, I'm using stock 2.3.3 ROM with FPS Uncap and a few more tweaks. I also tried another ROM (from ThJap) with his kernel provided along with his ROM, but I didn't see much difference in phone's performance between stock and modded (it's ironical, that I feel, stock was faster (even when modded ROM have OCed CPU), when I had around 25 apps installed. Modded ROM had imho more stuttering when flipping screens and app drawer).
So the question is:
1. What can be achieved by modding just ROM itself and what by modding kernel?
2. Also there were some things I liked about that ROM, but those I didn't like too, so who can I ask about modding some parts of stock ROM for me?
3. Maybe off-topic, but why after flashing FPS Uncap, FPS was better just in launcher and games, but in menus (e.g. settings screen), gallery, SMS, etc. the phone was so laggy and unresponsive? It's like this even after reinstalling phone completely, when no apps are installed. I was expecting better FPS and responsiveness in all of this (especially gallery, which is unusable right now). Can I do anything about it? Even my friend's Xperia Active, which has the same CPU, is much faster and smoother. I know, it has smaller screen resolution, but the situation is the same with all phones using Snapdragon CPU I've seen so far. Only my X10 is laggy and slow (with stock or modded ROM; it doesn't matter) compared to them.

There are lot of stock based roms better than stock whch already have FPS uncap and all tweaks done.
As you said for me also stock based custom roms became slower and slower as days passed and apps installed.
But I stumbled upon old rom but really solid one.
cm7zmod by zdzihu runs on doomkernel.
Its really fast and hasnt really lagged/sowed down in one and half months of my usage.
No big bugs except tethering not working.
give it a try, you wont regret it.

also modding rom by yourself will be hard at first if you dont have much knowledge about it.
Kernel modding requires more knowledge( I can give u link to guides for doing that if you want). Its not my expertise.
