I have been reading all nite about the 3vo root and the one thing that is killing me is this eMMC.
I'm no developer, but I am a flasher, and have been since I had my Samsung Moment back a couple of years ago, so I'm not a noob. I just know NOTHING about eMMC.
Can one of the smart devs we have here explain what this is, and what it will mean for our phones?

^This tied in with your avatar made me LOL.
What exactly you want to know about it? Basically it's rom, with a storage area, and is flashable
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
I think it is just a different type of memory than NAND, like in the way a thumb drive is different than a computer harddrive. They both store data and stuff, but they go about how they store data differently.

At a very high level, the difference between eMMC and "naked flash" (i.e. NAND flash) is like the difference between an SSD or hard drive and the flash BIOS in a laptop or desktop computer.
In the Evo 4G the flash was connected directly to the CPU chip much like the BOIS is in a laptop/desktop, so the CPU chip had to do various things to make sure the flash was being used correctly, like wear leveling. In the Evo 3D, the eMMC flash is "hidden" behind a controller that does those things. (In fact, eMMC is really just a MultiMediaCard, but in a form that can be soldered in instead of removable.)
The result is that our fearless devs need to learn how the CPU in our phones 'talk' to the eMMC since that interface is completely different than 'talking' to naked flash.
That makes it more understandable, thanks.

Helllo SITH16.
Did you ever flash you eMMC with a falsher by solding directly on the board?
I read something about riff-board but I own a Exploitee.rs Low Voltage e-MMC Adapter.
I really need to know the connction point to get a 1-bit data mode and then dd-flash the signed-bootloader.
Can you or anybody help me?

so just read up on swap and had a couple more questions. i understand that it changes the way your phone handles the ram different apps use but still not understanding the specifics. if someone could clear that up it would be wonderful also will this affect battery life at all? and last question will this work on the kernel that comes with das bamf remix 1.6.3? ( i think my phone info says dirty by adrynalyne #1 ) or do i need to use the one suggested in the instructions --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1106420 here?
It turns a set amount of your sd card memory into ram essentially, and the less frequently accessed files are written to the sdcard swap partition instead of the ram, essentially freeing up the ram for the more frequently read and written data. I didnt notice any effect on battery life, and i guess the only way it would...was if it drew more power to write to sd...i believe you need to use a kernel with swap enabled like the one by imoseyon
Thanks a ton! that perfectly answered my question as for the kernel i figured as much. does anyone know if the kernel i mentioned supports swap?
Swap is created on internal space, the emmc not the SD card.
sent from a sweet paper weight.
Pretty sure I read from Adrynalyne that his kernels all had swap enabled even though he doesn't believe it works.
Mike
For windows users, swap is like your page file (just better managed). I see very little ever use swap on android though.

First off love your signature and after reading some more it is definitely on emmc. which is fine cuz the thunderbolt has like what 16gb of it?

There are also whispers going about that doing this "could" stress the emmc too much and cause your phone to an hero itself. The emmc is also possibly the leading culprit in the GB reboot of doom. Too lazy to point to source but seen this about the forums.
Truthfully I don't understand why people are putting their phones through this. EMMC is limited to how many times you can write to it. Just like a SSD drive. The first thing people do with SSD's is to either disable the swap file (page file) or move it to another drive. Putting a swap file on your EMMC is just killing the life of your EMMC even sooner. People say that you'll never kill your EMMC chip within the lifetime of your phone. But the fact is, no one knows how many writes your EMMC chip will take before degradation occurs. It's all up to the user though. Just wish people would do some research and fully understand the technology within their phones.

+1....Adreylane himself declared that he would not create swap on the EEMC. If he does not recommend it, I am not doing it.
I would like to, however, figure how people have so much RAM remaining on their phones safely. I only get about 120/600 free 98% of the times without having to constantly close out tasks. People in the dev forum are reporting they have had 300-400 free on Froyo. We all know GB takes more but I am on Froyo still and only have seen my aforementioned numbers.
id heard of some problems on emmc but didnt realize it was such a big deal. thanks for clearing that up before i tried it out. and im having the same issue im only getting between 100-200 free mb of ram without a task killer. is there something were doing wrong?
My GSII is totally broken. It can't even connect to the boot cable.
Anyways
I only need a way to reach the internal memory becausei got some VERY IMPORTANT info and pictures that I need to extract.
HOW CAN I DO IT?
can I extract the hardware?
Wow
Really wow
No one even bothers to give me a answer.
I've had 2 questions and I never got an answer for any of them. What a support. What a support.

First off, understand the fact that you aren't the center of the universe, nor everyone's attention.Help will come eventually.Be patient next time.It can even take days for a proper answer to come.
So,to extract the internal memory is easy. You just have to disassemble the phone and find the "NAND" labeled chip(or so I think, but you'll probably be able to find it).Problem is that, normally,it'll be glued to the mainboard. If you remove it,you destroy any chance of recovering the whole phone.Bigger problem is that, even if you extract it ok,you don't have any equipment that will be able to read it.It's not an SD card that you stick in a reader and do your thing.
So,your best bet is to send the phone for repair and explicitly state that you want your files intact.Ask them to not repair it if they can't preserve your files.
That's all the help I can give you.I hope someone can help more.
Even though you were a bit rough but it's MUCH better than ignoring
I know I'm not Thee priority, but I just had a trip to Turkey and have ALL my pictures in my GS2. I'm nervous and you can see why.
As you can see I live in Iraq and obviously there is no proper service around here and I'm the biggest hope I got.
Either I wait until I go for another trip and take the phone with me to fix it there or to bother you guys here, and I'm sorry for that

You just need to be patient man.Sorry if I offended you,it wasn't my intention. What I told you applies to everyone around here, not to you explicitly.
Anyway, your best bet is indeed to keep the phone safe until you can get proper service.
But in case someone can offer you better help, could you tell us what exactly happened to the phone?

I had CriskeloRom 32 on my phone and nothing was wrong. I was checking websites while thephone was plugged in to a charger. Suddenly my phone died, the screen went black and didn't turn on. I tried to but it in recovery & downloading mode but it never did. Went to a repairing store they used the boot cable but it didn't even get connected.
The best guess is some hardware thing is broken inside.
My bad luck is I had the 16GB external memory filled with HD videos and I was using the internal memory for the camera. The best moments of my life in antalya/ Turkey with my wife and daughter is saved in this memory.
I was waiting for Galaxy Nexus (I actually ordered one) but after this I'm really afraid of internal memory only phones.
Now I use Galaxy Note

Well,I keep my important files in the external SD,so I avoid possible problems.
Sounds like something got fried inside your phone.Damn thing goes really hot when charging sometimes. And Iraq's hot climate must have finished it off.
So,I'd wait for someone more experienced than me to say something on the topic.I think that what I said still applies though.Samsung service maybe is your only hope...
Hi everyone! I have a serious issue with my sdcard. Ever since the 23rd I have been unable to do anything permanent to my sd-card. I was on my vacation so all my vacation photos were deleted. It is writable, I can delete, write and change as I want but when it's rescanned all changes (delete, write etc...) were never made and it sets itself back to the 23rd. Now I have access to my computer so I formatted the sdcard hoping it would fix it. After I put it in my phone all files popped back up. So my case is:
I cannot make any permanent writes/changes to it.
Formatting doesn't seem to help
Once again, it is writable (Temporarily), i took a photo and pushed it into the /system partition, it was there but not on the sdcard after reboot.
Root explorer have options for mounting it R/w and R/O (It doesn't normally do that)
I am not a noob and hate asking for help but this is a serious issue for me and I am thankful for any help i can get.
Thanks.

Hmm, I deleted the partition and made a new one. The computer no longer detects the sdcard in the adapter. But with mass storage via usb on the phone it's detected, all the files are there, like nothing was changed......
Its getting weird :sly:

I would say he dint unmount sd card and it lost changes/writes.
I unmount each time in settings > storage both internal and external sd and havent had an issue since i last used my old desire.

No, but i did partition it with phone half a year ago, then i got a new phone and deleted the partition. but that was months ago. It seems like the fat32 partition is somehow broken, too bad i can't access it via the computer anymore. I guess i'll buy a new sdcard soon, perhaps one of those samsung class 10

It is cause it dont mount unmount proberly, changes are not made, it is an android issue and or driver(can be both i dont know) i normaly use an sd card adapter and make my changes that way, works better for me.
The way you do it with android's own mount, is flawed sorry to say, it is not like this for everybody.
My own LG Optimus 2x and my Samsung Galaxy Ace have no problem with any of the 5 sdcards i got, but my desire has a hard time doing it, it can be a HTC issue but can also be related to the AOSP source and or drivers, but tbh i have no idea.
Best of luck and sorry for the late responce.

Some sdcard's deteriorate faster then others, i had a few in my time that died or stopped recieving data earlig on i just usualy throw them away, can be me being picky but i think some cards just arent ment to last forever, can be a factory error or wear and tear.
Maybe even "stressed hardware" sorry for my bad english but i have no idea what i can call buggy hardware other then stressed, as that is what happens when the worker or machine is stressed for making it.
Sometimes the machine makes a mistake or the worker leading into a lower life time for the hardware, most of the time the machine or the worker dont nothice it and it is shipped.
Many possibilities, my advice as a perfectionist when it comes to data is to get a new one, get one with a good review from XDA forum :good:

I already have a New one, the exact same type and brand. If this one breaks too i will have to complain to the company making them. But I think I am the one responsible for the damage, I did something with root explorer (I don't remember what) and a while after the sdcard was killed.

So I've had my 3D for almost a month now, I upgraded from the HeroCDMA, and while I was on the Hero I wrote a guide to install Firerats and Data2ext simultaneously in order to increase internal storage by creating a partition on an sd card, as well as control the size of the /system, /data, and /cache partition sizes on the phone itself. Just wondering if it would do any good for our phone(or any other phone, for that matter) or if it's a waste of time since we already have plenty of storage. On my Hero, I was able to have a 4GB partition on my sd card be read by the phone as internal storage, install well over 100 apps/games, and have them all work flawlessly since I also increased the /cache size using Firerats in conjunction with Data2ext. Anyways, I haven't seen anything on the matter in any of the 3D forums, so I assume it either won't work or isn't worth the extra effort
Just in case anyone wants to look at it, or thinks it might have some relevancy, here's my thread:

Hmm...I don't think it matters much what version of android it is, at least, I know that it worked for both GB and ICS on the Hero. Oh well. I don't really need it anyways, just was curious if my guide could be of any use to other devices.

Maybe I don't understand your solution well enough, but how is it different from link2SD that a lot of us use already? That app allows many of the files for other apps to be moved to a second partition on the SD card.

I stand corrected. He made the software back in 2011. I started using it when I was on gb.
Oh man I to used firerat with my hero back in the day.

Firerat is still useful. Just not right now. Soon though.
1) does anyone for see anymore kernels coming down the line. Imoseyon? Or the likes...
2) is there any evidence that crack flashing eventually slows down a phone? I'm not too keen on the android system... Well not as much as I want to be. Didn't know if its like a computer to where you end up with fragments and what not left behind to slow it down over time. (Hopefully that's not a dumb question...either way though I don't care ... That's how we learn )
I plan on building one at some point, just don't know when I'll get time to do it. I've been fairly busy the past week, so a kernel has been on the back burner since the phone is already really fast, and battery life is already great.
Right on. So any insight on the phone flashing?

As long as you are wiping all data then I would not see it as a problem... If a computer had a button that said "wipe all user data" and other recovery options. then it would be pretty hard to get that back but I'm sure there is a way as we both know what hackers can do! On a standard hard drive I could see it being easier because it uses OLD tech but with the newer ssd hard drives I would bet it would be harder to get data off that device if someone wiped it. That being said I don't think that there would be much to slow anything down if any as we are pretty much formatting our cards by using custom recoveries but I have had devices that people would recommend to format the data 3-4 times so??? I've personally never had any issues and I have been on Android since it came out but hey, I'm only human... Have you seen the "computer guy" around? Maybe you could ask him?

Lol...yeah he would know since he was apparently born with knowledge of all things phone. Myself on the other hand have to learn the old fashioned way. But either way...there's no way he would lower himself to answer an average forum goers question. How silly. Ha.
I was just under the impression that wiping or deleting didn't actually do so, it just marks the data to be written over. I know I can recover "deleted" files on my computer for a while after they have been deleted and there are some (such as photos) that you can see where a portion has been written over. Didn't know if phones were the same

Ya the thing is that your computer is most likely running a background service to save what you have deleted so that you can restore to an earlier state where as our recovery can be TOTALLY wiped if we wanted to do that. That is why we make nandroids so we can go "back in time" to a state that was functional for us. Without a backup though, your SOL! So no need to worry about slow downs of any type unless your sd card was corrupted or something. "MOVE" lol
