If so which one. If not, why? Do we really need it?

i did when i first got my phone but dont now, dont really need it
I never have and still don't. I have seen others who do run them I personally never saw the use. Although I have been proven to be too trusting of my fellow humans.
I used Avg in past, it wasn't able to find any virus, maybe there is no virus in phone but you need to sacrifice some resources.

i don't, but i also don't download warez or anything from untrusted sources. i'm also not the first to try new apps released on xda or other sites. and i don't use public wifi. so i play it safe and really don't need it (right now).
that said, if you do any of the above, it makes sense for you to get some decent A/V software. especially since android viruses are becoming more prevalent.
i run lookout security thats about it. ive been running it since day 1 of vibrant
and changing roms as often as alot of people do on here will probably wipe any viruses anyway
I'd been running Dr. Web for a while. Its never found anything on my phone. I may go without it for a while.

Lookout mobile security is pretty good.
Nope never have never will

I ised to run lookout which is a pretty good app but I don't feel itbis necessary and it killssss your battery
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I used to run Lookout, but I turned off the AV part of it because it just made my phone incredibly slow whenever it decided to scan something.

So I'm right about to get a new phone(and provider), but don't want to just throw my trusty Eris away. I was thinking there should be a rom that has everything but phone radio on it. Does anyone else think this is a good idea for a rom?

(edit)
As everyone has pointed out, Cookieman's rom does just this. I haven't viewed the forums from a computer in such a long time, instead relying on my subscriptions in the phone app(and even then, only caring if a new version was out), that I completely missed Cookieman's thread pop up. That covers this base completely. so....I guess ignore this.

U mean like cookie man's Rom ?

Gingerbread ROM with no Phone
I saw that too, but i wonder if CookieMan is working on a Gingerbread build of the MP3ROM? Considering it seems GB is much better than Froyo on the Eris AND we have a AOSP GB ROM now out. That would be cool!
Hey friend, nobody says you can't make another music rom if your so inclined. I'm sure plenty of people would enjoy that.
DINC|CM7|SLAYHER#27
considered.....
I have considered it, and probably will once i have some time to actually go through the AOSP ROM AND look at Cookie's to get some starting ideas.
Also already running other ideas in my head on what i would keep/trash....
we'll see if i have time next week to start working on it.....
I think the radio should be left intact because I'm sure you'd still want to connect wifi. Just take out the phone and message apks.
DINC|CM7|SLAYHER#27
wholeheartedly agree

That i agree, and was my first though regarding an updated ROM). A lot of media related apps use Wifi.
I wonder if there is a way to keep just the 3G/cell signals disabled this way you can still toggle the wifi and bluetooth. 3G/cell would be useless since you can't get a data only package with these phones and the intent would be NOT to use it AS a phone.
Things to think about, Peoples brains to pick...
I suppose all somebody would have to do is open up the radio file, do the modification then rezip and sign it. Modifying a radio is way above me and could be slightly dangerous but I'm sure one of these high speed devs around here could handle it. If we could get a modded radio then the rom build would be gravy.

I got my first virus over the weekend.
Curious what percent of people run AV on their EVOLTE?
Avast is the best btw. AVG, Norton, Symantec catch less than 60% of viruses on Android.
You.....got a virus? Please enlighten us

Never saw the need for an anti virus program on Android. Well unless you want anti theft, but i believe you can get that standalone...

I would like to know where you got a virus as well. If I was downloading warez all the time from unscrupulous websites then I'd probably go with an antivirus. I don't think I'll be getting anything from the Play Store though.

Stop downloading porn on your phone.
Problem solved.
Had an antivirus for the last year (Lookout) and gave it up last week. It seriously slows the phone down. I only use it for tracking in case it gets lost.
Don't use it, don't need it.
I, too, am curious about this virus.

Antivirus' are pretty much useless on android unless they use root. If you're getting viruses/malware than odds are you're using cracked apps.
And this is the entire point of having antivirus on ANY device: to protect people from themselves.
Well,,,Idownload porn all the time. Inevergot a virus,,,or syphalus,,,not even a cold,,,Virus,,,pischaa !!!
Don't see the point in it.

To all the people using an anti virus to track their phone, stop. Use cerberus. And if rooted with custom recovery, they provide a flashable on the website which is what I use. Other apps can't compare to this. Many features.
I call shenanigans. Maybe he just though he needed a AV and maybe thought it did something cause it stopped something like ads, or text ads from a stupid game that shouldn't have em. Speak up than.
Anti virus on Android is just a battery sucker, all of em. And if u want to stop things like ads, adaway is the best at that.
Please do look at cerberus though in the market.

Just realized this thread got moved. So how I got the virus....
I was annoyed my new EVOLTE kept dropping wifi while I was playing poker. My old EVO 4G never had this issue, sitting at the same spot in my house. My LTE works fine if I'm in the same room as the router, so it's obviously a signal strength issue with the EVOLTE.
I though, like my laptop has a power save feature on it's wifi chip, maybe the EVOLTE does as well. So I searched the market(not realizing there's a setting to put wifi into high performance mode).
In the market I found an app with 100,000+ downloads and 5 star rating....
"Networking Signal Booster" by Baca Studio.
It was still there last time I checked even though I did report it and looking through the comments it looks like others have reported it as well.
I installed it, couldn't tell if it worked or not. Did research on how the app did what it did, and I started seeing some people say their comment was forced. I saw a few pages into the comments a few people saying it's a virus.
I installed AVG. AVG said it's a virus. I uninstalled AVG and installed Avast, and avast also said it's a virus.
Wiped my phone. Installed Avast.
And here's a question I had after this. I'm not rooted yet, my old 4G was S-off.
If you're S-Off, theoretically a virus could install a rootkit and wiping your phone wouldn't remove it, and AV wouldn't be able to detect it.
I'm probably still going s-off the next time an exploit for the newest OS comes out, but food for thought.
It would be nice to be able to lock and unlock s-off with a password.
To .jond, I still have wifi drops sometimes on mean rom. He fixed it for some, but mine wasn't one of them I guess. I would delete that app if I were you. go into settings> wifi> advanced there are options for 2.4 or 5 GHz. If your router can do 5 than it will, otherwise keep it set to 2.4 and that alone will help with drops.
And the app you are talking about probably only does what the best wifi performance in settings>wifi>advanced does. I think I read somewhere that it uses 802.11n instead of 802.11a, which is much faster.
I found this
http://www.networkworld.com/newsletters/lans/2010/031810-wireless-router.html
that tells the speed differences, but I still don't remember about that setting.
Test your speeds with speed test.net app, with and without the best wifi performance checked and if it doesn't show any difference than turn it off as it will use more battery.
Note, it showed no change for me at a constant 24mbps.

Coming from iPhones you hear alot about malware and virus on android phones. Is it really something I need to be concerned about? If it is do you recomend an app to protect my phone?
I've been with android since 2009 never had a virus so I'd just be cautious where you download apps from aside from the play store and you while be fine.

Right now I'm on my third android phones (plus 2 tablets) all rooted, and I have never had any malware or any security related problems.
Exercising caution help no doubt.
I also haven't heard or see anyone who's affected by it. Neither from friends or forums.
I suspect it's a case of media bias.
Google it. Lolz

Worry about malware or viruses if you're trying to install pirated software. Anything you do not install from the Play Store can be iffy and you're taking a risk..,that said I haven't had any issues and I've been on Android since the G1 and I install Market apps and non market apps. Common sense seems to be the best defense.

A little off topic, but glad to see you hear on the lg optimus g. Do you plan on making a kernel cleaning script for this phone as you did with the GSII?
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda premium
Don't consider the play store some kind of safe haven to install anything. Plenty if **** on it that you don't want to install. Just use your head. Problem with most things malware is you don't know when it's doing what it's doing and just looking at your phone isn't going to make it jump out and tell you it's there. A lot if it is data collection. Just don't install anything you don't trust and you won't have problems.
That said, I install avast on all my phones for its firewall and device recovery. The antivirus is a bit of gimmick but it's nice to know it's there for things that have already been identified.
Is there any performance issues or quirky behaviors you have seen with running some form of A/V?
All I've ever seen an AV do is eat up resources. Over all of my time with android, and many, many non-market apps, the worst I've ever gotten was an app that spammed me with push notifications, easily solved by an uninstall. I don't think people have anything to worry about as long as they have some idea what they're installing.
Thank you guys for all of your responsens. I figured it was not as bad as they made it out to be. Thank you
I've used Lookout (free) on both an SG2 and the LGOG, no noticeable performance hit. Check it out if you're concerned about viruses. Incidentally,it has yet to report finding a virus.
2gb ram 1.5ghz quad core. We won't having very many noticeable performance issues with much of anything.
so i came across this yesterday, and thought id try it.. basically the app offers you the world.. a tweak for everything.. brighter LED flash, smooth all the lag, better call quality, phone boots faster, pictures are crisper, camera takes better pictures, videos stop playing out of sync, faster wifi connect, faster media streaming, faster DNS, and so on..
tried it myself, and if anything its making stuff choke up, where it used to work fine lol. but totally as expected.
just wondering if anyone else has tried this, and what they thought of it.
Same experience. I guess there are some elements that get enhanced, but by majority, my phone got messed up so I had to reflash my rom again..
Considered trying it myself. Untill I read the word 'alpha' and it descouraged me from doing so. Still, I went to the thread and read more about it. It has some 'alpha issues' going on. Check it yourself.

I've tried for some time, but no remarkable/obvious changes to my phone.

Hey there, I am looking for some instructions on how to speed up my phone. Ever since the latest update for Android it has been getting choppy/hanging and it is becoming frustrating especially when I am trying to get a girl's phone number how do I go about doing this? I suspect I had too many pictures and videos so I packed them all up but did not see any improvement in speed. Any fast ways to uninstall many programs quickly instead of having to do each one at a time? I know that I have tons of apps installed that I don't use anymore. Thank you for any help.

You can use a program like ROM ToolBox by JRummy to do batch operations like that. I'm sure there are countless others, I just happen to use that suite

A phone so hardware rich shouldn't give you those sort of issues. Is your device completely stock?
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk
yes it is completely stock, never got into loading things like Cyanogen mod because I don't have any need to do so and also afraid of bricking. Thanks kil4thril ill check it out.
You'll have to be rooted to use rom toolbox.
even when you free up your RAM your phone still runs slow?
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk
I'm stock as well and agree since the 4.3 update my phone has noticeably slowed down....very annoying.
Try removing your SD card if you have one installed. If you see improvement provide the brand and model of SD card.
I Can tell you I switched to Illusions ROM way before the official 4.3 ad it was so freakin fast. Now on CM11 and it is still freakin fast. Much faster than any TW rom.
But ya, you may need to at least root to use some tools to figure it out. I have been using Startup Manager to clean up whats loaded during startup. Its amazing how many apps set themselves to auto start at boot. And almost all are unnecessary.
