I got my first virus over the weekend.
Curious what percent of people run AV on their EVOLTE?
Avast is the best btw. AVG, Norton, Symantec catch less than 60% of viruses on Android.

I would like to know where you got a virus as well. If I was downloading warez all the time from unscrupulous websites then I'd probably go with an antivirus. I don't think I'll be getting anything from the Play Store though.

Problem solved.
Had an antivirus for the last year (Lookout) and gave it up last week. It seriously slows the phone down. I only use it for tracking in case it gets lost.
Don't use it, don't need it.
I, too, am curious about this virus.

Antivirus' are pretty much useless on android unless they use root. If you're getting viruses/malware than odds are you're using cracked apps.
And this is the entire point of having antivirus on ANY device: to protect people from themselves.

To all the people using an anti virus to track their phone, stop. Use cerberus. And if rooted with custom recovery, they provide a flashable on the website which is what I use. Other apps can't compare to this. Many features.
I call shenanigans. Maybe he just though he needed a AV and maybe thought it did something cause it stopped something like ads, or text ads from a stupid game that shouldn't have em. Speak up than.
Anti virus on Android is just a battery sucker, all of em. And if u want to stop things like ads, adaway is the best at that.
Please do look at cerberus though in the market.
Swyped from my eVo
Just realized this thread got moved. So how I got the virus....
I was annoyed my new EVOLTE kept dropping wifi while I was playing poker. My old EVO 4G never had this issue, sitting at the same spot in my house. My LTE works fine if I'm in the same room as the router, so it's obviously a signal strength issue with the EVOLTE.
I though, like my laptop has a power save feature on it's wifi chip, maybe the EVOLTE does as well. So I searched the market(not realizing there's a setting to put wifi into high performance mode).
In the market I found an app with 100,000+ downloads and 5 star rating....
"Networking Signal Booster" by Baca Studio.
It was still there last time I checked even though I did report it and looking through the comments it looks like others have reported it as well.
I installed it, couldn't tell if it worked or not. Did research on how the app did what it did, and I started seeing some people say their comment was forced. I saw a few pages into the comments a few people saying it's a virus.
I installed AVG. AVG said it's a virus. I uninstalled AVG and installed Avast, and avast also said it's a virus.
Wiped my phone. Installed Avast.
And here's a question I had after this. I'm not rooted yet, my old 4G was S-off.
If you're S-Off, theoretically a virus could install a rootkit and wiping your phone wouldn't remove it, and AV wouldn't be able to detect it.
I'm probably still going s-off the next time an exploit for the newest OS comes out, but food for thought.
It would be nice to be able to lock and unlock s-off with a password.
To .jond, I still have wifi drops sometimes on mean rom. He fixed it for some, but mine wasn't one of them I guess. I would delete that app if I were you. go into settings> wifi> advanced there are options for 2.4 or 5 GHz. If your router can do 5 than it will, otherwise keep it set to 2.4 and that alone will help with drops.
And the app you are talking about probably only does what the best wifi performance in settings>wifi>advanced does. I think I read somewhere that it uses 802.11n instead of 802.11a, which is much faster.
I found this
http://www.networkworld.com/newsletters/lans/2010/031810-wireless-router.html
that tells the speed differences, but I still don't remember about that setting.
Test your speeds with speed test.net app, with and without the best wifi performance checked and if it doesn't show any difference than turn it off as it will use more battery.
Note, it showed no change for me at a constant 24mbps.

I never have and still don't. I have seen others who do run them I personally never saw the use. Although I have been proven to be too trusting of my fellow humans.
I used Avg in past, it wasn't able to find any virus, maybe there is no virus in phone but you need to sacrifice some resources.

i don't, but i also don't download warez or anything from untrusted sources. i'm also not the first to try new apps released on xda or other sites. and i don't use public wifi. so i play it safe and really don't need it (right now).
that said, if you do any of the above, it makes sense for you to get some decent A/V software. especially since android viruses are becoming more prevalent.
i run lookout security thats about it. ive been running it since day 1 of vibrant
and changing roms as often as alot of people do on here will probably wipe any viruses anyway

I am thinking about upgrading to the evo 3d in a few hours. (15-20)
and i am wondering, is it really worth it?
can anyone please tell me about any issues with the phone that YOU personally have experienced that are major.
main use of phone will be 2d movies, music, texting and some web browsing. calling of course.
lemme know please and thanks lol
My biggest gripe about the phone..... Google Music/ data roaming.
I had NO issues using Google Music on data roaming with the NS4G. With this, I can't really data roam anymore.
My speeds are slow on 3G (but so are everyone's it seems, Sprint is becoming overloaded obviously), and there are said to be towers out in my area.... I've heard that excuse for the past two years... I'm getting sick of it. All of that combined with not getting some phone calls and text messages is a bit annoying.
Other than that one inssue (which affects any sort of data usage really off Sprint's network), I love the phone for what it is! MUCH nicer feel than any other phone (including the OG EVO) I've ever used, and I love how comfortable it is to hold.
Battery life is decent for me, camera is everything I wanted, and you and somewhat attach a lanyard thing to the phone if you really need too (good for takin' pictures).
I'm happy with it, I'm going to keep it..... Sprint's probably not going to like my complaint tomorrow, lol.
So other than there are really no issues? like overheating or anything?
After 20 days I'm 100% satisfied. Take it for a 30 day test drive, if you don't like it return it.

If this is really all you want to do, then don't upgrade. The phone is amazingly fast, stable, and Sense 3.0 is well organized and very nice to look at, IMO. However, what you seem to want to use the phone for is not something that warrant upgrading to this device for.
I upgraded because previous Evo lagged with some of the games I played on it, it had Bluetooth connectivity issues with many devices I wanted to pair it with, my internal memory was full even using apps2SD, etc. I can benefit from the upgraded hardware on this phone due to the type of user that I am.
In your case, however, if you can afford it and want a phone that can do everything you want and a LOT more, then go for it. What I'm trying to say is that you don't NEED a 1.2 ghz dual core processor, 1 gb of ram, a high resolution screen, 3D capabilities with native mirroring to an HDMI source via MHL, etc. to send texts and browse the web. lol
But it won't hurt!

some cool things I have found out,
it may be old news for you, and some were mentioned in tech blog space before
1. during my call, i turned the phone face down and it automatically turn to speaker. which was mentioned by engadget and ac, but see it working and give convenience, it is a good fun.
2. go to settings->apps-> all, I can actually disable quite a number of pre-installed bloats, without root or any other hacks. this is awesome. for example, amazon, viewnidi, vz navigator, vz backup plus all those bs, i can disable them, without worrying that if it will fc later or cause trouble =).
oh, disabling those stuff can give me much lower memory usage, and improve battery life because many of them are running at the background.
Guess what Titanium Backup uses to freeze apps by default on Android 4.x. It just uses that Disable feature as far as I can tell.
A few times when I've pulled my phone out friends have mostly just commented on the size, but I don't go on about it with non-tech people usually. I try not to be too showy.
As for cool stuff to do with it, it's really kind of gotten me in to digging in and finding mods to do to it on my own. I haven't really done that so much on my previous phones; only relied on pre-done mods, like I got the recent apps button to turn in to a menu button a good bit before anyone on the thread seemed to get it working, although a lot of the issues probably have to do with people using plain notepad, when better luck would probably be had with a "programmer's" notepad that'd probably load and save with UNIX style newlines.
Also, it gives quite a phone-bulge.

Certain apps/processes can't be disabled in stock Android, but TiBu let's me freeze them.
Honestly Youtube has to be the most impressive thing you can show anyone... the HD quality over 4g is simply great and then they try to load the same video on their apple crap and it looks like 8 bit mario... just make sure its a newer video from within the last year or so or the quality will be horrid.
mainly because everyone has that app and can compare side by side... and be like wow

That's when you may run into problem.
Having root access and do stuff like that, will give unexpected drags in some apps which will affect your battery life or other functions.
For example if some functions or apps are providing system level service to others, and unfortunately if some applications uses them.. and you frozed them... then it is totally depending on the app developers' handling in such case.
either kept polling , or throwing exceptions, FCs etc.

Coming from iPhones you hear alot about malware and virus on android phones. Is it really something I need to be concerned about? If it is do you recomend an app to protect my phone?
I've been with android since 2009 never had a virus so I'd just be cautious where you download apps from aside from the play store and you while be fine.

Exercising caution help no doubt.

Worry about malware or viruses if you're trying to install pirated software. Anything you do not install from the Play Store can be iffy and you're taking a risk..,that said I haven't had any issues and I've been on Android since the G1 and I install Market apps and non market apps. Common sense seems to be the best defense.

A little off topic, but glad to see you hear on the lg optimus g. Do you plan on making a kernel cleaning script for this phone as you did with the GSII?
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda premium
Don't consider the play store some kind of safe haven to install anything. Plenty if **** on it that you don't want to install. Just use your head. Problem with most things malware is you don't know when it's doing what it's doing and just looking at your phone isn't going to make it jump out and tell you it's there. A lot if it is data collection. Just don't install anything you don't trust and you won't have problems.
That said, I install avast on all my phones for its firewall and device recovery. The antivirus is a bit of gimmick but it's nice to know it's there for things that have already been identified.
Is there any performance issues or quirky behaviors you have seen with running some form of A/V?
All I've ever seen an AV do is eat up resources. Over all of my time with android, and many, many non-market apps, the worst I've ever gotten was an app that spammed me with push notifications, easily solved by an uninstall. I don't think people have anything to worry about as long as they have some idea what they're installing.
Thank you guys for all of your responsens. I figured it was not as bad as they made it out to be. Thank you
I've used Lookout (free) on both an SG2 and the LGOG, no noticeable performance hit. Check it out if you're concerned about viruses. Incidentally,it has yet to report finding a virus.
2gb ram 1.5ghz quad core. We won't having very many noticeable performance issues with much of anything.
I am curious because i love this phone and im trying to avoid rooting it... However their is so much damn bloatware on this crap so it slows down to the point i can't even type a text message, My HTC Hero had faster speeds than this phone at certain points and thats pathetic. Its becoming frustrating and ive already thrown this thing across the room twice now (i have insurance and im shocked it hasnt broke yet)
All my syncs are off, Wifi is usually off but it keeps turning on and thats annoying, my screen time out is set for 5 mins, my brightness is low, i have next to no apps installed because it acts up when i do.
Got full insurance? Root the heck out of it! That's not normal for a phone like this, I have the open international version and it's buttery smooth. You might want to wait for 4.4 kitkat which is assumed to come within a month or two so it's up to you.

Thanks Devs. From my VZW G2.
You can "Disable" all the bloat apps. I did that with my Wife's G2 and it runs buttery smooth.
This phone has never been slow, no matter how much crap I put on it.
I'm on stock, have just under ten different launchers on it, all with fat caches, all the original apps loaded and available, always on WiFi/3G, 3gigs music - the way I like it.
It has never stuttered.

Read this thread. There are tips about how to make the phone snappier:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2479892
For me the phone never stuttered or lag. Still on stock with no de-bloating done.
If there's a reason to root for me will be to install Adaway & stop the annoying ads. Other than that it's pretty much all set up.
Sent from my LG-D802
That is definitely not normal. The stock phone is way more than adequate for your every day use, and I ran it for a good month flawlessly. However, I just liked the themes and extra abilities of being rooted (then, eventually a custom ROM) so I just did that. You can always revert back anyways.
still debating on rooting as well, I still linger around these forums on occasion. I somewhat grew out of the rom flashing, and buying/selling phones. As for the LG G2 , its a solid phone, really enjoying the battery life, yes it probably could be better but 17 hours plus with heavy usage is excellent for me.
Debloating is probably only reason I would root, but you can also hide the apps you don't need and that is holding me over for the time being. I will most like give in to rooting the device :silly: for a few mods,

root it that wont hurt your mobile and download app master and uninstall all crapware and u good..
Why wouldn't you root? It's very easy and you can always return back to stock with no issues. I say root it and then do whatever you want with it. Just remember to not change anything if you don't know what it does. If you keep by this one rule, you shouldn't have to worry about bricking it.
I rooted and it's worth it specifically after debloating. You can always go back to stock with the LG tool kit.

it is worth the root but, maybe its just me, when restoring back to factory you wont be able to update anymore.
If I root my T-Mobile G2, could I change the rooted status to unrooted in the lg root checker? That is the only thing I am worried about. I am running the OTA update non rooted.
I've opened every app on my phone, including torrent apps and high need games, and I was still able to play Need for Speed: Most Wanted at full speed and not even a screen glitch or sound skip. The fact that OP is having lag issues is astonishing.

If you have a Sprint device the wifi issue is likely the connections optimizer, you can turn it off in the settings.
Yes
I went from S4 to this phone! I did the root on first startup! I think that Android is all about doing your own settings and make things just the way you want! If some company sometime release a phoen that I do not need to root and ''make my own'' I will be sad :=)
Full reset. If same, return.
