Hello all,
I just got a Gtablet. I have brought it for my parents, who are not too tech-savvy, so I would like to set it up well for them.
I mainly want to use GTab to chat with them using webcam. Could any of you suggest an app that actually works and also if required, what custom ROM should I install to get that app (as I understand the stock ROM doesn't provide access to any app) ?
I went through a lot of threads here, which talk about video chat using vtok, qik, yahoo messenger, but couldn't find a conclusive answer for my question or something which I could understand and then implement easily. So, posting here.
Thanks all and have a nice long weekend in advance.
i had the exact same idea
currently running vegan 5.*
tried fring and it failed completely, it simply did not work.
so i am interested in other possible options.
http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummie...egories/show/1114121-12-yahoo-messenger-chat-
Goodintentions, does this work for doing video chat from Gtab to pc successfully ? If this works, instead of spending 200 bucks more for getting a xoom, I would just root this device and install this app. Let me know if you have done it successfully and with which ROM ? If possible, let me know asap, because, if I need to get the tablet before my parents leave for abroad, I will have to order today itself to be delivered. Thanks in advance.
I've tested it with several roms. In fact ill test it again later tonite when I get home. Will confirm.
Did you test it ?
Hey buddy, did you test it? Could you share the conclusion asap ? Thanks.
I've gotten Yahoo to work between pc and gtab and VTok (3rd party google vid) but both kinda suck and are a bit of a pain to get to work (vegan5)
Do you mean they suck in terms of quality or they suck because of complicated installation ?

They suck because its not a very good camera. You need to have good lightings. Get the asus transformer if you want better cameras.
Yahoo Messenger video does not with CM7.03 stable, however I've heard it does work on other roms.
Personally, I've found Yahoo's PC app to be terrible, and when trying to chat with a Nexus S, he couldn't get it off the rear camera. PITA.
I haven't had time to try yet, but I like the idea of Oovoo's video chat. Lets you video with up to 3 people simultaneously for free. Supposedly a version floating around here that works with the Gtab, however again this doesn't work Cyanogen roms that I've tried. :/
The new Skype 2.0 would be great, however it requires Gingerbread in order to use the native camera API. Since we don't have an official Gingerbread port, the GB roms lack the native camera drivers making the API useless.

I've had my gtab now for over a month and I just installed my first ROM last week. I went with the Calkulin+Clemsyn V6 for the 1.2 BL. So far I have to say I love it but I don't know what it really excels at. Therefore, I thought maybe you guys could help a noob out and at the same time be able to do a bit of bragging about how bad a$$ your tablet is. What I would like to know is:
1. Share with the community about your bad a$$ setup. What do you have? What can it do? What makes it so bad a$$? And what are its cons?
2. What are some of the must have apps? What makes them a must have?
3. Can someone tell me what my ROM really excels at doing? Every ROM is especially good for something? What can mine do other than just being really fast and stable?
Just thought this would be fun for everyone to see what each of us have done with such a powerful blank slate and at the same time maybe get some ideas from each other on how to improve our own setups. Not to mention maybe a bit of bragging, which we all like to do, especially when you have an audience that can appreciate it. I try to brag to my gf about how bad a$$ the gtab is but since she knows nothing about tech toys, it is lost on her. So everyone whip out there metaphorical "you know what" and let's start measuring lol.
Well, speed and stability really is a universal need for you to do anything. I use mine for presentations, showing people autocad sketches, and reading and writing stuff at work. It really is a cheap and light weight way for me to achieve most of the things I'd normally do with a laptop.
My "girlfriend" just finished her graduate degree in something medical (trying to keep a level of anonymity here). She's a tech dummy, so I got her a transformer with a docking station for her to deal daily with her patients.
I use mine for research and school. I use adobe PDF to review lecture notes, I use Droidiris to search the web for pictures of medical $hit I have to learn (and just searching images too, searching "lazers" gave me an hour of solid lolz)
My gtab is badazz because I'm running the latest compile of cm7, I have used system app remover to cut all bloatware out of the os. This has resulted in an average 5% drain per hour in active use and a 2% per hour drain in stasis and a quadrant of 3450.
I'm running a red&black theme with a red glowing Keyboard, black&white background and black and white app icons. Its a simple mix of black, white, and red that to me is sassy as hell.
I use wiimote controller app to play snes and GBA games with a wiimote through Bluetooth. (Which blows people away when they see it)
I got Netflix, I got hulu and I got xda access, I am in love with this 2lb piece of plastic almost as much
as I am my wife. Luckily my wife has the specific ports needed to mount my other tab and transfer
data to internal SD.
Yes... we have a kid...
That's why that last part is funny.... not just because I said "mount" in a non technical refference but that I referenced her lady bits as internal SD and my genes as data.
Sounds pretty sweet

Your gtab sounds pretty sweet. The Netflix and Hulu are a couple of the things that I would like for mine to do. It may do those things now, but I haven't tried them yet. I like the customization with the colors that you did. It sounds like you have taken yours in a direction similar to where I would like to see mine at some point. I'm trying to learn which ROM does what, and what makes one better than another. Once I get that all figured out, I'll make my customization a bit more permanant. This is awesome. You guys keep posting your own bada$$ gtablet setups and customizations. I look forward to reading about them.

I use this as a guide,
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Barebones
It tells you what's safe to remove and what's not from cyanogen mods. It also tells you the free way to remove apps using terminal. I personally use system app uninstaller, it was a buck and is a worthwhile investment. Sets up a slick UI for deleting both system apps and normal apps.
In most cases if you have a favorite browser(I use dolphin 5.1) you can delete stock. Same with keyboard(I use better keyboard 8), launcher(I use VTL), video player(I use FLV player), music player (I use power amp).
Other things like private virtual network or stock live wallpapers that most don't use can go in the bin as well.
Hope that helps
As far as customization goes cm7 has a good theming app stock and free themes in the market. Vegan 5.1 has some sweet themes made by GTO777 in the apps and themes thread.
When I was shopping for ROMs GoodIntentions suggested that I might like Calkulin/Clemsym 1.5 V6. He was right. I like it for what I've been able to do with it. I didn't want to start customizing my tab just willy nilly without knowing what my ROM's capability was. Maybe you guys could point me in the right direction if I tell you what I want to do. Then you could tell me if it's even possible to do it with this ROM. I would like to be able to run the dolphin browser but was unable to find it in the market. I would aso like to be able to watch Netflix, Hulu, and various formats of video (Xvid, Avi, Mp4, etc.). The swype keyboard found on my cell phone would also be awesome. I'd like to be able to connect to my cell via bluetooth so that I could put the pictures and video from it on my gtab. This blows my mind why this simply doesn't work out of the box. Finally I would like to tether to my cell via USB. The reason I want it USB is because my phone gets really hot when tethering with wifi, which will cause the phone to shut down. Not to mention it can't be good for it. Please help me out guys and keep posting your setups too. Mantara has some great ideas he used in making his tab personal and it gets me thinking of stuff to do to mine.
Have you used barnacle to tether? Using barnacle to tether through wifi on my OG mytouch 3G never overheated and battery drain was reasonable. It was the only one that worked for extended periods of time.
Netflix only works on cm7 with some slight modifications and vegan 5.1 with a patch that breaks YouTube to get Netflix.
Hulu is available by using a modified flash apk. You can find the most recent modified apk on this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1077914
you just need to turn flash to always on and user agent to desktop in your browser.
Here is dolphin 4.6, not the newest but its stable and plays well with hulu. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7828279/Dolphin Browser HD_4.6.1.apk
I heard there is a swype designed for tablets. Haven't used it yet but I know there is a thread in apps and themes all about getting swype to work.
That's all I can think of now, I wil edit if I think of anything more
Using Easytether

I've been able to tether my laptop to my phone using Easytether. It works really well eventhough it's a free version. The thing is that requires software to be loaded on both the phone and the laptop. That software on the phone is for Windows so I haven't figured out how to make it work in the gTablet. Is Barnacle different in how it functions? Is there software for both the phone and the tablet? Explain how it works if you don't mind. I would love to figure this out.
As a side note, I would love to see a picture of your tablet homepage and keyboard. Could you get a screen shot? I gotta check it out.

There's some quick shots. Color Is odd because the crap free screen shot app is crap and couldn't get shots of red browser theme or the red and black Google Widgets and powerstrip because said crappy app only allows 3 free screen shots. But you can get the point from the pics I did get.
I see, your phone is win mob, barnacle is for android phones. No software on recipient end, only on parent phone. Works good though, I used to play Xbox 360 online through my barnacle adhoc

Man, I went back and reread my previous post. I made no sense. I have a Samsung Galaxy Indulge a la MetroPCS. So it is an Android phone. The problem is the software that I suppose I would need to load on the tablet to tether it to the phone. I had to do it to the laptop so it would connect to the phone, so it only make ssense that I should have to do it to the tablet as well. I have Easytether on my phone, no problem. What about software for the tablet? The laptop software is for windows so I can't load it on the tablet, and the software on the phone isn't what I need for the tablet even though they are both android. Seems really confusing, but it's really quite simple. Maybe it would be easier if you told me how you were able to make this connection using a barnacle USB connection. No wifi. Make sense lol?
Nice looking tablet by the way. I looked for some themes or skins for mine but I'm using VTL launcher and everything in the market says it's for ADW launcher. My name must have been Murphy ina previous life lol. Thanks for your help and input.
Most adw themes work in vtl. Vtl is built around adw source.
Barnicle makes a wifi connection available for your gtab to use. It links to your phones wifi and passes on its 3g signal. Only need to have barnacle on the phone. I have never actually "physically" tethered an android so I can't offer any advice on that.
I'm kinda screwed there I guess. I haven't rooted my phone yet, so it won't act like a wifi hot spot. Power control plus will do it but no one can break the wp2 encryption. Therefore I'm limited to the usb tether but those that have rooted their phones report extreme heat coming from it while in wifi tether mode. Not sure what to do about an internet connection since there appears to be no usb software at this moment. Thanks for the help though.
Are there no more cool gtabs out there that you guys would like to share. I can't believe that you guys aren't more proud of your work and that you aren't will ing to share your efforts with the Android community.
I replaced the viewsonic 3 birds logo with a united federation of planets in star trek logo. And for the boot animation, I made my own star trek computer console look-alike animation that says establishing link to main federation database.

I've read through that thread and it only focuses on themes and home page screen shots. I want to know what people have been able to make their tablets do as well as seeing some of the visual stuf they've come up with. An example of what I'm talking about is some have synced their SMS with google voice and are able to use their tables to text. Some are making phone calls, using skype, watching hulu and netflix, and some have even turned their tabs into mobile nostalgia gaming devices. There are tutorials on how to do some of this stuff, but not all of it. I am interested in meeting these people and seeing how well these operations function, and how they did it. The other thread doesn't share this information and rreally doesn't go beyond the visual aspect of the homescreen. I hav noticed one thing for sure in these forum and that is that people love to brag about what they can do with thier tablets. I was merely offering them an opportunity to do so. What can yours do?
I got a 10.1 wifi recently and am wondering if its worth it to root now and get ics installed (with the -of no camera) or to wait untill samsung gets its act together, and get the offical version.
You're asking in an Android Hacking forum, we're all rooted and I'd bet 80% are running ICS .
If you can live without the camera then definitely go for it, if you're comfortable. You could be waiting a while on Samsung, they tend to delay such things.
If do decide to root it, don't be afraid to ask questions here. Welcome to XDA.
I don't know if the question asked is appropriate or a trick question considering this forum is completely dedicated to the benefits of hacking to gain maximum benefit.

It's really not very hard to try it out for yourself and see if you like it. You can always flash back to stock if you need to.
I have CM9 ICS on my personal tablet, but am still using 3.2 on my G-Tab 10.1 because I need the camera for work. I am running the Overcome ROM on it though, which gives me a little more options/flexibility than stock samsung.
but as far as performance, there is little difference between 3.2 HC and ICS (at least at this point). There are some UI differences that I like, but they are minor changes from honeycomb, so don't expect a huge difference on ICS.
Easy answer: yes, it is. And it's very easy to install ics. Just do it and have fun.
Three more questions:
Is there any other bugs besides the camera not working?
And any links to upto date root and ics (i think i read 4.0.4?)?
Is it not possible to get the camera drivers (which from what I have read is the missing link) from the old stock version?
Fyi I have the Samsung 10.1 wifi gt-p7510
Thank you guys already I am not trolling btw i have never rooted/ flash a new operating system on android and kind of afraid of bricking my tablet.

QBKing77 has great video instructions on YouTube, check it out. Very easy. Make sure you do a backup b4 putting a rom on and make sure it's for your Tab. Only issue I have ever had is no camera, but I knew that going in and I use my S2 for pics anyway. We can't get the camera because Sammy will not release the needed info. You can brick your tablet that's a risk but there r ways to unbrick, like I said just make sure the root method and from is for your version of the Galaxy Tab.

Once rooted you wont look back and its so easy and quick to do. Much more freedom IMO, I started with ICS and its great, but went back to HC just because of the camera. Such a shame, I have htc dhd phone rooted on ics and camera works fine, just a samsung thing.
As said previously, give it a try
Question about rooting what dose it allow you to do?
Rooting allows you to gain access to the system files, lets just say its like your employee ID to get into your company
i rooted my g tab to ics once, i guess it was worth it, but i went back to honeycomb because of the camera.
It's not like camera on a tab plays a great feature, because taking pictures with the tab is like using a laptop to take a 5MP picture.
I'd say I never use the camera on my tab.......... Until I flashed ics then I just kept needing it think it's just a case of wanting what you don't have.. So I'm back to HC.
Is there any good roms out there with the camera working? Sorry for the noob question, Im a new tab owner.

Sorry to bump this, but I'm curious to know if it's easy to replace the tablet for a decent price? That's really my only concern about rooting my tablet.
Of course it is, you are in the right place
i havent flashed the 10.1 to ICS purely because i use the camera for such things as skype or google hangouts.
so im using overcome rom, but i miss being able to group apps into a folder like ICS can do
ICS Or Not??? That is the Question!!!!
Over the last 6 months I have tried every ROM listed for the Galaxy Tab here on XDA, including ICS. I must say ICS offers better battery life, faster processing and better visuals, but I am like a few others and need the camera so I am sticking with Galaxy Task Rom. Out of all of them it is the most stable, and fastest giving me Quadrant Scores of just under 3100. Using ICS I was closer to 3600 and I thought at one point hit 3800, but I think that was a fluke, but then I had no camera, so back to 3.2. For me I have compiled the best apps I could to make my tablet a screamer.....If you have any others please let me know.
Galaxy Task
OC 1.4 Pershoot Kernel (is there a 1.5 or 1.6)
Swapper File @ 500mb (app)
SD Speed Boost set at 4000 (app)
Volume + set on Beats Emulation with +10 speaker increase (app)
Poweramp for a 10 band equalizer for great sound (app)
Now using the same apps with ICS made it ultra fast. But I wish the camera worked.
Definately appreciate everyone on here with their input.....my knowledge is only as good as flashing and recovery, but am trying to learn more as I move forward. Love the Galaxy Tab, it is my 10th tablet I have owned and my favorite. Now I have to figure out how to flash my Atrix 2 phone........love this site!!!!
Quick ques about ICS Roms [from what I've seen in Cm9/Muiu]
1. can you change screen mode [dynamic/movie/normal]
2. change font styles?
I don't remember seeing these options, but it was about a month ago when I flashed these Roms?

What is it worth a tablet that cannot play video or flash stuff browsing/reading news or else?
I am so disappointed and regretting to have made this upgrade, trusting some people who claimed to have a
workaround for Flash Player.
The next thing is hoping that a method for locked device but rooted is found to downgrade, cause I was more satisfied then than now.
It was not enough to have others issues with the Prime, rebooting, freezing, BlueTooth and bad WiFi signal.. now we do not even have Flash working.
Well if a workaround that works is not found, I think I will try desperate to downgrade and stay on ICS.

Did downloading the apk and installing it not work for you?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774336
All you have to do. Is sideload flash.apk and stock browser. apk and it will work fine. Flash works flawless on my Nexus 7. Refer to Nexus 7 forums for details. There's a thread in there with the flash.apk and browser.apk for you to download and install. Very simple and easy to do. Just follow directions OP gives you. But believe me, plenty of xda users JB devices are using flash just fine.
I sideloaded Flash and it works fine. I use Boat Browser + Flash + JB without any problems.
Additionally, more websites are using HTML5 video instead of flash. And if you just bought the tablet for flash, you're really not getting the point of a tablet. Tablets and smartphones are more app based rather than browser based.
I still have flash on the stock browser after updating to JB.

Flash is still there, it won't show up in your apps but it's still there.... at least on my device it is. I have no problems playing flash content and it's faster than before..... if you got to settings, apps, all, you'll see it's still there. Also Adobe will continue to push updates to Adobe® Flash via Google Play to those devices that had Adobe® Flash previous to the Jelly Bean update.

I never thought I'd say this, but I don't really miss Flash at all in day to day browsing now. Most sites that I use don't use it hugely, or have converted to HTML5, and for video I mainly use YouTube anyway so the built in app works fine.
I have been using Chrome since it was first released, and have only gone back to the stock browser for flash once or twice in the last few months. So for me, I haven't lost anything, and probably wouldn't notice for a while if I did. The main thing I notice is that flash-based ads don't appear, and I consider that a feature.

The fact is that all Android tablets from here out will be in the same boat. So this doesn't make the Prime "poor" unless you want to say all Android tablets made from now on are "poor". Then, don't forget that the iPad has never supported flash. Therefore if you follow your reasoning to it's logical conclusion, then the iPad is "poor" too. So where does that leave you? Well, you won't be using a tablet or phone for web browsing. Not any tablet or phone. The work arounds will keep it going a bit longer, but it is dead.
This is another useless thread. Its really upsetting, especially now the op got flash working and the whole point of the thread is irrelevant. Update your first post and title OP!

I rooted and installed Vegan-Tab Ginger 7.1 well over a year ago and then my g tablet pretty much collected dust. My son is asking for a tablet for 4 basics things: to watch You Tube, Access Net, Play Android Games, watch Netflix. Right now the video lags or is just a black screen when trying to watch through the You Tube app and when we go through a browser, it tells us we need updated flash player. I'm so far removed from when I started with the tablet that I have no idea where to begin.
I don't know what other information you need to offer any suggestions.... When I originally rooted, I was on version 1.1 -3588 (that doesn't even make sense to me anymore!)
And, you can recommend something to meet my needs, what steps to I take to get it on the tablet? I'm happy to follow links -- I just don't know where to begin. (Do I wipe it clean? How? Do I partition it? How? Then add new ROM? How? LOL)
I have to believe I can salvage this tablet for his needs rather than buying a new, cheap tablet for him.
Thank you .... thank you!!!

Refer raywaldo.com site for detailed instructions on installing ROM to GTablet. I personally prefer Smoother Bean v1.5.2. I bet you won't regret the time spent on flashing this stable wonderful ROM
Sent from GTablet Smoother Bean v1.5.2
Thank you! So both of those ROMS would work with version 1.1?
I really appreciate the help!
You may have to follow the directions to move over to 1.2 I held off for the longest time but am glad I did it now. A lot of the compatible ROM's look really good and the dev's have done an awesome job keeping everything updated but I want all of the hardware to work on my GTab. It is kind of why I haven't strayed from Brilliant Corners.

Thanks -- I found a thread yesterday to walk me through upgrading to 1.2. Gonna save that for another weekend but feeling like there is a light at the end of the tunnel
I tried 2 versions of Jelly Bean last week and now back to vegan tab gingerbread. I found both versions of JB to be slow, afterall they are still beta versions. Went back to vegan tab and it runs great, even seams to run better this time. Everything works including youtube, had problems before because I updated youtube. Leave the version that comes with vegan. Just my opinion.

the download links do not work can you provide us with a download link please ?
I have gtab brilliantcorners 1.3.0 saved on my Google drive. It is 149MB and I guess MegaUpload was shut down. PM me if you want access to the file.
I tried SmOother_Bean.ver.1.5.2 which is a version of Jelly Bean. It's running pretty good, youtube and other video sites run great. I don't play games so cant answer to that.
Back to Vegan tab gingerbread, tired of sod's and lately restarts for no apparent reason.
personally cm 7.2 is the bomb
Right now I'm struggling really hard to find a new phone I want, and realistically none meet my standards due to low battery, or bad camera specs and software support. However I keep finding myself wanting the Xperia line of phones, and I strangely really want to get this phone but I hear and know of many cons already. Heating issues, and in a year or two it's going to lose software support right?
However would rooting it, or people who have rooted the phone solve the issues regarding the phone themselves? Like was the os optimized better for thermals, or is there a good line of custom roms that can securely update the phone that way instead? Was it worth it to go through the hassle, or is bricking a strong issue and unable to be dealt with.
Cuz honestly I just want a decent phone of 5000MAH, great camera, and good dual speakers tbh. It'd be cool if it'd come with a headphone jack too, and if micro sd was an option but honestly I only use about 80gb of storage anyway.
101% i love my with root

Mind telling me what you did that fixed the stock flaws? I got my heart set on one of the Xperia phones lol. Tje 1V looks amazing but I wanna wait for the 5V at the same time too lol
5v wont be relased until september or maybe later.. they tend to follow yearly schedule
and if u like the notification LED better hurry caus i red some information about its no longer at the X1 V
and if this happens 8 bet same will happen at the X5 V
I haven't needed to fix any flaws really, but still rooted to remove bloat, block ads, access app data, improve privacy etc.

ShatteredSpider exactly this! I've done all that and tbh so far (4 months), have not an issue to shout about. Perhaps its by removing the bloat, thoough very little compared to some phones, having a rooted ad-blocker makes my phone run flawlessly so far without no crazy heat issues. Of course there have been some official updates, mostly security but they may have tinkered around with the initial heating issue too. Battery life is great, magisk+modules run perfectly and banking apps work fine too. So far, my best and easiest rooted phone experience so far with some great cameras/software, plus I've got Gcam/revanced running too as a plus. New phone sensor does sound great, not sure I need to jump to it, especially as gcam night images work pretty well for me and even for general snappy images.
@davestuarts Was there anything root-related that you had to do to get GCam working properly? I had a hard time with it initially though it did take pictures and then it stopped working entirely, possibly due to a system update.

I don't think Gcam technically requires root, there's nothing I can remember that suggests it, as I remember testing Gcam when I first had the phone and was untouche/not rooted.
I've had Gcam 8.1 installed since (with a profile) and it's been running fine, mostly photos and occasionally videos.
I've updated the rom about three times, though manually as it's rooted, but Gcam continues to work. I've tested other versions of Gcam but they either didn't work or crashed. That's all I can say. Any further questions, I'll try and answer if I know.

Oooo please send what kind of photos you take on the phone, i wanna see the quality!! To me it seems like the perfect mid tier phone, but I wanted to see the stock photos, pro photos and possible gcam but haven't reliably seen results only a few reviews. I also wanna try to work it into being a professional webcam when I'm home for motion tracking but afraid of bad quality?
