So, my wife is on SC2.9 still....I put OTB kernel on it...but now she's having some issues with reboots and is wanting stock kernel back....I've searched around, but I'm not that great with this phone...(had a heck of a time just getting where we are now, dx user myself).
So, can anyone push me towards the easiest fix/stock kernel?
Thanks a lot everyone.

This is a stock kernel that will not flash a recovery. Use odin to flash it: https://sites.google.com/site/imnuts/stock_kernel.tar.md5?attredirects=0

Is it possible to go back to the stock samsung rom after I have used a custom rom?
I just wanted to know before I do my first custom rom.. yea imma happy noob
btw, im looking into teamwiskey v3 rom but you know honestly id really like all this in 1 rom if possible:
1)gingerbread
2)overclock capability(kernal?)
3)wifi tether (kernal?)
Thanks guys for helping.. really appreciate it

You can odin back to stock!
In one word. YES. Quite easy too.
Overclocking currently is not ideal as the kernels use the Samsung Galaxy S International version code and that kills our battery. As soon as the Vibrant source code is released, we can see overclock kernels which don't kill the battery. For now though, don't use any OC Froyo Kernel. Use vodoo + stock kernel.

NeroV3 comes with JL5 kernel w/voodoo 5.0.4, which is disabled by default.
The SuperIO kernel is a kernel developed by eugene that fixes I/O lag on the RFS system, supposedly removing the need for other lagfixes.
Go to my thread, read the short writeup. Then watch my video tutorial on going back to stock from a custom rom via Odin. It is quite a simple process actually. If all you want to do is go back to stock, you can stop watching after that is complete. OR I showcase how to flash nero v3 w/voodoo Cya!

I wanted to root for a while, just looking for a rom that looks and feels stock, but has better battery and all..
well I followed
watch?v=-hPSrzRqtX4&feature=player_detailpage (cannot post link as I'm new)
and successfully got to supra rom.. well I don't like the vanilla 5 screen non sense homescreen, though I do like the crt visuals lol...
Anyways, I can't even use my wifi, it just says error, and I NEED wifi, I use it at home non-stop as I have horrible service.
Well I tried to switch to viperRom - I did the reset in bootloader, then full wipe, then cache and all that..
well, once I installed the viperRom .zip, I started my phone and its just the same as before... I can't switch roms! I know this is prolly some nooby thing I don't understand but I've been searching all night and just want to get everything working and need to sleep haha
any help GREATLY APPRECIATED
What do you mean about not being able to switch roms?

I figured out that I was trying to flash to viperRom using only the update
I'm now on viper, with stock kernel and still cannot get wifi to work, any ideas? Any searching turns up kernel issues, and to revert to stock.. well I'm on stock kernel

unless you're having hardware wifi issues, which the best way to determine would be through running a stock rom and stock kernel, my guess is you have a kernel and rom mismatch issue.
the way htc has their kernels compiled includes two things: kernel and modules.
the modules include a wifi module.
if you flash a kernel and then load a rom, chances are the rom might overwrite either the kernel, the kernel modules, or both.
the best way to avoid this scenario is to flash the rom first and then flash the kernel. the kernel flash will load the kernel itself and its modules. i.e. if you're on a rom you want to stay with now, flash the kernel again and then wifi should work.
hope that helps!
Thank you, o figured this out myself, but you were right lol I was using 2.3.3 roms on 2.3.4

Hey guys, I'm not gonna ask the dreaded question "Which Kernal is best?", but I am currently rooted and want to overclock to 1.5, but besides that, what else should I be looking for in a kernal?
What about modems (or is that embedded in the kernal)?
We only have 2 options, Entropy or Siyah and they do not include a modem.
Check the dev section for kernels & modems.

Both kernels we have offer oc abilities.
Personally I would look at stability and battery life but that is just me. Try both and see which suits your needs.
Modems are not associated with kernel and depend on your area. Whichever works the best where you are.
We have two choices here and both are incredibly stable and allow overclocking. You can't go wrong. Basically the biggest difference as far as I can see is the recovery that comes with it which is almost entirely preference.

So if I find a ROM I like but want to experiment with the other available Kernal, is it as simple as flashing my ROM first, then once booted up go into Odin and flash the other kernal i want to experiment with?
Or is the kernal that comes with a ROM the one your stuck with?

Just use CWM to flash the zips provided or Mobile Odin if you prefer it that way.
No need to use a computer to change the Kernel.

Thanks for the quick response chris,
I guess what I'm asking is if I have a rom with the Syiah kernal, is it possible to keep that same ROM but swap kernals, sorry, I just wasn't clear on what your answer meant.
I'm guessing your saying it is indeed possible and just flash the .zip for a different Kernal on top of an already installed ROM.
Sorry, I'm tired...
Changing the Kernel on 2.3.4 & 2.3.6 roms will not break anything.
For CM7, CM9, MIUI etc you have to stick with what is included or see what works with it.

For example, latest Siyah with touch recovery. Awesome for flashaholics.
Your talking of version .14 I assume, if so, doesn't it say in .13 description that .13 would be the last for Gingerbread?
Obviously it works if your using it, so i'm gonna download now...
Hey guys, finally gathered the balls to flash my Fascinate a custom ROM today. After a long while of deciding what to go with, i found PowerWashed GB and flashed it with Odin and to my relief it worked and i went on and installed the permission package for it and my APN for Cricket.
Anyways!
I'm looking for a working kernel for my ROM (PowerWashed GB), I've checked out Leankernel but there's a few bugs in it. Can anyone recommend me a good stable ROM that works on PWGB?
Or possibly even better, a good reliable ROM that i can simply flash from where in at now? Please don't recommend Cyanogenmod, unless i can get a detailed guide because when i tried to flash it i got an error and it messed up my display and my keyboard got stuck open, and it was just hell so i re-flashed PWGB and was back to good.

Thanks for the quick reply Downloaded it and Odin'd it and enabled lagfix and it runs nice now.
Hi, I'm coming back from a hard brick where I managed to ruin the formatting of my internal SD. Having spent a LOT of time trying to fix this, I decided that I would just sacrifice it and go with a swap SD kernal.
I found neatkernal which is perfect for my needs since I'm trying to flash slimkat. The only problem is that the downloads for the kernal all seem to be bad. Does anyone have a version of neat kernal swap SD laying around? I can't even post specifically in that thread because I'm new here :/
any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I should be more specific. The download works but I can't unzip the file and it won't flash either.
Prior to the issue I was on stock, then I tried a few kernels including an ICS I think? Is there a serious issue there? I think it was Passion because I was trying to get access to a higher version of clockwork mod. For the record this is my first time messing with custom kernels so it was a bit of a learning

ok i get it now but what ever you do just do your self a favor and stay away from ics on this device, it will lead to more head aches trust me. if you wanna play with kernels they need to be the same version of android that your running i/e neat kernel is a 4.4+ kernel so you would need to flash a kitkat rom or already be on one. any ideas of what kind of rom you want to run? ive flashed most of the kitkat roms we have and can help you decide depending on what your in to rom wise. also no need to extract any thing from the kernel zip, once you flash the kernel your recovery(cwm) will be updated.

I wanted to run slimkat, but I just want something smooth so I'm open to trying other things. The only requirement I have is that the kernal needs to be swapSD since my internal isn't working.
Also, I was trying to open to open the zip so I could convert it to tar and flash with Odin. Even if I try to directly flash the nearkernal.zip, it tells me its a bad zip.
Thanks for the help by the way, I really appreciate it!

cyanaosp, vanir, ressurrection remix. i usually stick to these 3 roms but im pretty sure you may have to run an older version of neat kernel with those roms due to cm's latest changes, which you can read up on here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51224160&postcount=356. as for slimkat it should be fine to pair with neat kernel not exactly sure though as i haven't flashed that rom before.

Hmm.. I'll look into those, tho I my main issue is still kernel. I tried older versions of neat also but they all have the same problem of not being compressed properly. Can you confirm that those files are good or did out just look at the link?
I originally wanted to run the same kernel you are running , but I don't think they have a swap SD version. I'm not sure how hard the modification is.
yeah they work i just downloaded v1.04 and 1.06, but only flashed 1.06 after restoring my nand of cyanaosp ran it for a hour then went back to vanir. sorry semaphore wont do you any good as it doesnt swap sd only neat kernel has that feature. if you want i can upload what ever version of neat that you want and send the link via pm.
