Former Epic owner!! - HTC EVO 3D

I like some feedback by former Epic owner with their experiences and comparison with the Evo3d vs the Epic. I'm thinking of pulling the trigger and getting the Evo3d today. I'm looking for honest feedback by former epic owners only and not fanboys.

I would also like to know former Epic owner opinions. I spent some time at the Sprint store, but I couldn't make up my mind. One thing I noticed was that the Epic's camera seemed better than the 2D camera on the EVO 3D.

I thing Samsung has on HTC is there camera, but I have been able to get some great pics 2d pics with the EVO's camera. With good light, it produces some great color.

I had the Evo running Fresh and Myn's for the longest time. Switched to the Epic just out of boredom. I loved it. I ran ACS SyndicatROM 1.1.0 - 1.1.1...
I made the switch for the faster processor. Ultimately hoping in the end... we could get a clean ROM and it being faster. I miss the keyboard a little. But I have my Epic sitting here chilling. I can go into more detail later... I have to go to work.

I'll bite. Sense 3.0 is amazing. My last experience with Sense was on the Hero and it sucked so I went with vanilla on the Moment. There is less lag with 3D vs the Epic. Good test is opening the application menu waiting for the icons to load. It's like less than a second on the 3D. You'll miss the camera but this is not horrible and 3D is pretty damn neat. The Epic screen does have that "wow" factor to it with blacks and color but after using the qHD screen and its level of detail you won't go back. 3D movie and YouTube watching is amazing. The well produced ones will actually pop out of the screen. The key to viewing is holding the phone at the right spot for your eyes. About 50% better battery life. No joke. The onscreen keyboard rocks. I hate swype's. HTC'S plus having a swype ability makes having a physical keyboard a mute point. The phone is also really solid. Not flimsy and flexible like the Epic. 4G takes a longer time to initialize. The Epic loads it a lot faster but the 3D's is a lot more consistent. ALSO, HTC'S power saver doesn't cripple your phone at low battery like the Epic. You can run it into the ground if you want.

Well, so far I still have both until we get the within. After that I'm dumping the epic. The 3vo has been a really nice upgrade from the og evo in terms of speed. I just like the way sense incorporates all of the social apps in itself.
In terms of the epic versus 3vo in speed I would have to say that I can't really "feel"a huge jump, but that's probably mostly cause of sense being a huge chunky glob of software that has to be pushed. I'm sure if it were running on the epic it'd probably get bogged down cause the lack of ram.
The one thing you'll still miss is your bright screen and louder speaker. So far those are the only two real world things that are worth a regret if I left the epic entirely. I wouldn't even consider the keyboard a loss since I don't use it, but you might. I find the camera in 2d mode to still struggle in low light compared to the epic which doesn't struggle as bad.
There is still a lot of optimization to be done for alot if apps to run correctly to their full potential as well. Only time will really tell as dual core phones trickle out.

I just recently came to Sprint. Wife got an OG Evo, I got an NS4G. The NS4G's broken radio pissed me off and I took it back, got an Epic instead. I really liked the hardware on the Epic compared to my wife's Evo. The screen in particular, Super AMOLED is the bees knees. The one thing that I really hated though was the lackluster development community. Coming from a G1 and an HD2, I've always had a plethora of choices when it came to choosing a rom. Not the case with the Epic. I was jealous of my wife's Evo in that regard.
Originally, I was going to hold off for a SG2, mostly for the screen... but the more I thought about it, the more likely it seemed that the Evo was going to have more dev support, and ultimately went with that. I was reluctant to give up my beautiful screen, but I did.
A few days in now, and I can't put this damn phone down. I don't like the size of the 4.3 inch screen on the OG Evo, but the 16:9 screen on this is just perfect. It gives me plenty of real estate without the phone being as wide as my pocket. It's the perfectly sized screen for a phone, and I love it.
Sense 3 is neat. A little bloated, but there's a lot of cool **** in there. I look forward to devs picking it apart.
Other than that, the phone is fast as hell. The hardware is solid. The 3D is a little gimmicky, but it's still fun. The 2D camera is disappointing, that will be a downgrade from your Epic. I'm a photographer though, and usually have a plethora of camera's on hand when I'll need them. A cell phone camera, for me, is to catch spur the moment things. It would never be used as a camera in a scenario where I knew I'd need one before hand.
All in all, after being really leery to give up my phone, I'm really glad I did. This phone is great. Get it, you'll be glad you did.

keep ur epic until something better comes out..Epic camera is better..speaker is 10 times louder for streaming music and mp3 files..Epic starts much faster as well..I am switching back 2 my epic sometime next week...HTC 3d speaker is so damn low its horrible and embarrassing..keep ur epic

The epic speaker is MUCH louder, but the battery on the stock 3d is light years better than an epic and I was running SRF with Genocide kernel. My biggest gripe from making the jump is that the data speeds on both 3 and 4G are slower on the 3d. But for the faster day to day use, plus Sense, which IMHO is better than touchwiz, I think its a worthy upgrade especially considering that root is coming shortly and the optimized tons are gonna make this a beast

The epic is a GREAT phone. I loved that phone. Sometimes i get homesick for the loud speaker and play with my wifes epic. There is no comparison between those two phones. the 3d has twice everything the epic has...memory, processor, bigger battery. the extra 50 for the 3d is money well spent. i am glad i got the 3d, don't regret it.

I had the Epic and in a phone shuffle gave it to my wife and I got the Evo 3D.
I think both phones have their ups and downs. The Epic has a beautiful screen and, if you turn it down the brightness, battery life is greatly increased. I also really miss the keyboard when getting into a "texting conversation" - for 1-2 texts the Swype keyboard is fine, but for hardcore texting, a real keyboard is better.
The phones weigh about the same to me (don't know actual weights) so that isn't an issue.
The capacitive keys on the Epic are fairly unresponsive and often require a few taps to register (the home, back, menu, search keys). That is an issue I have not seen on the E3D.
The Evo is noticeably faster yet the speed difference is not so remarkable that I would just throw away the Epic like yesterdays garbage.
I haven't compared an identical picture side by side from the cameras, but the E3D camera (2D mode) seems comparable.
The biggest difference is in the screens. AMOLED (Epic) is truly a beautiful piece of technology, but the E3D screen looks "sharper" and I would guess it has higher resolution and pixel density...again, don't know the actual numbers. But it is a visible difference.
One of the only other things that bothered me about the Epic was the power switch and USB port. They were both in bad locations and they should have swapped locations.
If given a choice I would probably go with the Evo 3D for the hardware bump and I actually like the 3D. It takes getting used to...kind of like those pictures you have to look at for a long time and a 3D image pops out...you have to almost "stare through" the picture to see the picture, but now I see 3D on it with no problem. Took a few hours of playing and looking to get used to it.

AMOLED screen was bright and nice at the beginning but with time, it got harder to read text on the screen. I don't miss it at all and I'll never switch back. Obviously, the speaker and camera are better on the epic. The 3d aspect of the phone is definitely not a gimmick. Sense is buttery smooth and well worth the switch alone.

Epic has very slow development from sprint and Samsung. I used to own EVO then epic and now back to EVO 3d.
PS. Never going back to Samsung again.

I'm from the Epic. I honestly miss Touchwiz and i can't stand sense. i do like the music widget on the lockscreen, but to use to widget, you have to be using sense launcher. I also miss flashing and theming stuff. Hopefully evo gets s-off soon, kinda turns me off all the way with HTC even thinking about locking it up. Tbh, as soon as sgs 2 comes for Sprint, im ebaying the 3vO for it.

Ok boys, thanks for the great feedbacks. Well today I ended up getting the EVO3d. So far I only had it for a few hours and I already miss my epic speakers, screen and keyboard. But overall I'm very excited about my new toy.

Any updated thoughts from those of you who have switched?

How is the EVO 3D

How is everyone liking their new phone? Is it everything its cracked up to be? Also how is the 3d function? I'm very curious. I get mine from best buy Friday and I can't wait....I'm jealous of all you early birds
the 3d Photo Feature is actually quite decent, much better than the Nintendo 3ds by far.
4g connects extremely fast.
Mind you the screen isn't wider but it is slightly loner than the EVO, the phone fits in the palm of your hand with ease.
camera button and 2d/3d switch is a great feature.
Very solid build, the battery door covers the entire rear of the phone.
Music beta on 4g connects and streams very nicely, haven't tried 3g yet because im still uploading my music to it's servers.
Overall im very impressed SO far

i assume this is all while pluged in? i know this is to soon to ask but battery?
actually battery life from what i have seen is actually really good, i turned it on at about 40-50% i didnt check how much it was charged it is charging now, my friends at sprin has been off the charger for like 6hrs and he is at 70%.
but as we all know each user experience is different
i love sense 3.0...its AMAZING. i feel in control of EVERYTHING!
*Cries*
How did so many people get it early! gahhhh
...friday can't come soon enough!
UPS here delivers like at 8:30 at night so while delivery is today for me, it's pretty much tomorrow anyway....lol fail.
I wish I could tell you how it is!
I decided to stick with my local and trusted Sprint store figuring a day or 2 won't hurt...it hurts...
I'm glad to see its going well for those of you who got the jump on us though. Keep us posted on early impressions...
You wanna know how sad I really am lol? Since I have to wait until Friday to get my phone, I went to bb to buy an evo 3d case to feel closer, but they wouldn't sell me 1 lol
I came from a launch date EVO 4G. I now have the younger, hotter faster sister.
3D is way better than I expected. Make sure you compose so foreground, subject and background elements are in the frame. My eyes have no problem adjusting, but of course, YMMV.
Fast, fast fast. Even sense. Which I will still dump for ADW launcher ex. Just because it fits my workflow.
Annoying that the charge port is on the side now instead of the bottom. Looks like it was a design compromise to get a larger battery on the bottom half of the phone.
Any evaluation of battery life can only be taken after at least a week of use.
Battery cover seems harder to remove because of the camera shutter button. Someone has already mentioned it.
Sprint just made me stay with them until Verizon gets an equivalent.

Sadly, I had the same experience. I should have ordered from Sprint but thought: HEY, I will have a couple of days to decide if I really want this phone. I should know better.
+1 Sweet little phone here
Ordered yesterday (Tues) a.m., Sprint free shipping next day and got it this morning.
Been playing non-stop for the past 4 hours. I honestly say I like the E3D "in general" better than my E4G.
In terms of physical attributes, the narrower frame has a better grip on hand, even it's a bit longer than the 4G. Voice quality is at least on par with the 4G (As I have custom ROM on the 4G, it is louder anyhow). Connection for BT, Wifi and 4G are faster to established.
The QhD screen takes a bit to get use to (Even in 2D mode). I had the same concern as the Nexus 4G came out as they seem a bit yellowish tint than the regular LCD screen. However browsing the net, watching movies and games it is more crisp on the eye.
The only gripe I have is the Micro usb port being on the right side, instead of the bottom. And of course, I have to re-train my hand to hold the phone as everytime the camera lens get smudge with finger prints...
Overall, I'll give it 9.5/10 rating. JMHO.
Well this is the thread I was looking for..so far so good then..ill take a 9.5 out of 10th..I think the charger on the side sucks as well especially if your using the kickstand case and viewing something..thanks for.the input guys
3D is better than I thought, after all the bad reviews. When installing Google earth, a 3D buildings layer is now available, but it isn't real 3D, just rendered like the PC version.

9.5!?!?!?! 9.5?!?!?!! From all the backlash of the people in the Evo 3D section on the negative reviews, I would think this phone would be a 10!!! FAILBOAT ACTIVATE!!!
Man I have a tough decision, I got this ns4g in my hand and I got the evo 3d in preorder.... I don't know if I should pull the trigger. The only thing that is keeping me from going to 3d heaven is the bootloader issue lol.

yeah im still adjusting my eyes but when i do. im completely blown away especially with some of the youtube 3d videos. as far as liking it? I LOVE it.
Even coming from a Evo, I can still tell a difference. So far the battery life is perfect for the way I use it. like everyone else, im frustrated with the port on the side I keep wanting to plug it into the bottom. in short Im happy with my purchase and will be saying bye bye to the evo today.

While I have had almost no problems from the OS and underlying hardware there is a lot of software that is not the OS that I have had tons of problems with...like the camera. Also the 3G reception completely and totally blows comparatively. Especially if you are in a fringe area...or even close, apparently.
The 3D was a feature that I ridiculed from the first mention of it months ago...but it ends up that I miss that feature the most.
Miss it? Yeah, that radio sucked so bad that I just couldn't justify keeping that phone. Miss a couple business calls in a workday and suddenly everything else is far less easy to rationalize.
No business calls to worry about? That might have changed everything for me.
Here's to hoping the bootloader gets unlocked and the radio gets an update to fix this. Though from my experience the radio will get tons of updates, none of which have any apparent affect on signal strength.

To be fair all of the radios aren't bad. I've had no problems with mine. As a matter of fact i sold my original EVO to my roommate and we were sitting in his room. He asked me if i could get reception cause his kept going in and out. I had full bars

I could have swapped through a few phones... but I like the chicks that run that radio shack and wanna stay on their cool side...I even got my gift card back in cash. they made sure my upgrade got reversed and everything....and they have limited stock of everything and opening up every box and breaking open the seal on every phone (which is impossible to put back together) would probably have complicated their lives.
...and I also suspect it is a regional thing based on roaming agreements and protocols... My phone was perfect and I had been in all-bars situations, and most of the time even though the meter was way low I had no problems--most of the time. I can't risk missing work calls, which never ever ever happened with my 4G....and I can't even imagine an E4G getting no signal and my E3D getting full bars even being possible.
I do hope this all gets sorted out cuz I'm wary about getting a Samsung anything. I'm a huge fan of HTC hardware...and I have no reservations about marching back into that same Radioshack and buying the same exact phone over again.
As you may know the Evo 3D may have an updated PRL than that of the original Evo so it is very possible to have much improved connection to the cell towers with the newer model. Any PRL changes?
i loved my OG evo, which my wife now has. rooted and running MikG 2.2.
i am learning to love the E3D. my take on the upgrade:
1. Battery: E3D blows the rooted OG out of the water. surfing the internet for 20min on my OG evo would drop 20% battery easy (yeah, I could sleep for hours without losing 1%, but use the thing and it was like a fat chick eating twinkies). The E3D stock I can surf the web, play games, 30min goes by and I've lose a couple to a few percent. outstanding. used to keep plugged in when I woke up in the morning checking my email and websites in bed, now I just unplug the dam thing, and don't even bother plugging it back in when I go to shower. Also, no 10% drop off the charger when it's been on too long. looks like the E3D goes up and down between 95% and 100% while on the charger, actually showing you the actual percent (unlike the OG evo, which showed 100% all the time when it could be anywhere between 88 and 100% in reality). I no longer think about wasting battery or when I can charge, it's quite freeing.
2. Speed: E3D is much faster, yes; some say instantaneous, but I don't think it is that fast. you'll definitely notice it using it. even the internet seems faster loading web pages and downloading apps from the market (I know, it's just processing stuff faster, it's the same internet lolz).
3. Sense 3.0: I don't note a huge advantage over the OG evo running MikG with sense 2.1 and elements of sense 3.0, to be honest. definitely flipping screens is more responsive, but speed aside, I was happy with sense on MikG.
4. screen resolution: much prettier at qHD. I have one of the screens that whites show up a little cream, and can especially notice it beside my OG evo, but oh well.
5. camera button: a waste. I was hoping that it would change the picture taking experience, but the half press to focus takes FOREVER. much faster to touch the screen to focus (I turn autofocus off, and just touch the screen for my focal point). pressing hardware button fully is to capture takes exactly the same amount of time to capture as pressing the screen button, but causes a touch of shake. I end up just being happier touching the screen than using the button. hoping there is a camera update (read: dev solution) that can give faster focus with a half press of the hardware camera button, otherwise I'll just be pimping it out using a third party app to open messaging or something (better yet, maybe I'll use it to open the camera).
6. 3D: i agree with daneurysm, I ridiculed 3D as well before release, but it actually turns out to be pretty cool. love taking 3D pics. it will be the rage of the future, guaranteed, and we have it first.
7. radios: I have had none of the radio issues (wifi signal drop, poor signal reception). I have had my 3G not want to turn off or on, but toggling airplane mode fixes it for me usually. I don't have wimax in my area so can't speak to that. my 3G was initially very slow, but ran the proxy hacks and it seems better; I don't use 3G enough to really say much more (almost always covered by wifi).
8. voice call quality: when I first got the E3D, first thing I did was make a phone call to my wife who I had just been talking to from the exact same spot on my OG evo. she called it a night and day difference, with the E3D sounding very muffled. I found myself raising my voice just so she could make out what I was saying. I have since run the EVRC-B hack, I think my voice call quality is probably comparable to the OG Evo now. A little disappointing considering it is supposed to have a noise cancelling mic, but what can you do.
9. Camera: 3D pics aside, just roughly, I think pics are at least as good as my OG evo in good lighting. the OG evo took great pics in great light, it was mid and low light where it sucked. the E3D, I feel, takes much better 2D pics in low light. so a win for the E3D in my book on all fronts, plus you have 3D pics. I don't care about 1080p video recording, ::shrug::. the E3D vs OG evo camera argument will rage on, just my 0.02.
other small things: my phone is HW 002, and has great build quality. no light leak, no dead/stuck pixels, no light holes at the bottom. the build quality is definitely better than my OG evo. the power button is much easier to press (find myself struggling to turn on my OG evo now, lol), and I have not had problems turning it on inadvertenly as some have. I do press the camera button accidentally all the time, but it does nothing if the camera app is not open. occasionally if I open the camera app with the 2D/3D selector already in the 3D position, it will actually be in 2D mode, but a quick resetting the switch and it is good to go. it sits nicer in the hand in one-handed portrait mode, but the OG Evo sat better in two handed portrait (for sure) and landscape (closer to a draw here). definitely easier typing in landscape in with the OG Evo due to the difference in screen dimensions, but i'll get used to it; I type mostly two-handed portrait anyways, which I am also still getting used to (I was much faster on the OG Evo, but it's just a matter of getting used to the new narrower screen width in portrait). I never really used the kickstand on my OG Evo, so I don't miss it. External speaker was definitely louder on the rooted OG Evo, but there were all sorts of volume hacks on most ROMs; probably the stock speaker volume was better on the OG. Has not been an issue for me, but I notice myself having to make sure the speaker is facing me/up when using speakerphone with volume all the way up.
My personal take home after a week of use: outstanding battery, better camera, faster processor; it's a win. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the 3D pics/vids, you'll wonder why they put the camera button on there, and it'll take a little to get used to typing fast again.
Ultimately, you won't regret upgrading from the OG EVO.
tatnai thank you very much for taking the time to write out that very informative post. I found it very useful myself so thank you.
I now am waiting for this handset to be lauched in the UK. The date was first rumoured to be the 11th of July, now rumoured to be the 6th August. I am waiting very impatiently for this but I know the wait will be worth it.
Great review. Sums it up for me exactly, except for the kickstand. I used it quite a bit.

[Q] If you had the option of an EVO 3d or the Original which would you take

I have been having trouble with random reboots with the EVO4g and Sprint told me today they would give me a free EVO 3rd as its replacement. Now I am trying to decided if I should take the offer or insist on the original.
I already have the Seidio extended battery and innotraveler kit for the original. So I'd have to buy both of those for the 3d and take a huge loss on selling those parts on Ebay. So even though the phone would be free I would have to invest about about 125 on those accessories.
So have any of you guys moved from the original to the 3d and are you happy about it?
Thanks.
In my experience with the phone, I can say I am happy about the purchase. I owned the EVO 4G previously.

3d is an upgrade in all aspects. if they are going to offer it to you for free then take it. the only thing alot of us have an issue with is the signal strength (not as strong as original EVO, or alot of other phones for that matter), bad call quality, and if the battery dies it can be hard to get it to power back on for the 1st 15-20 minutes.
Id say as long as your in an area that has a strong signal then do it. The 3d is an awesome device even with its shortcomings
+3 it's well worth it. Coming from a previous 4G owner.
Agreed, go with the free upgrade to the 3D.
I wish the EVO 3d had the same dimensions as the og EVO.

This. Definitely this. I'm a big guy, I have big hands and big pockets. My hands are just a little too big for the E3D screen whereas on the E4G screen I could one-hand everything without overshooting.
...though the resolution increase more than makes up for any loss in physical dimension, so far as on screen information (text) is concerned.
It still irks me to this day. A lot. I'm swapping my E3D for an SGS2 next week for a couple reasons--one actually serious. But I won't say that I'm not excited to be back to a nice fat portrait screen....also there are a small handfull of apps that don't play nice in qHD and will just get smaller on the screen...it's no big deal, for the most part, but freaking annoying that an app that used to fill the screen no longer does.
I also get less signal and roam more than I did on my E4G. It's kinda critical. It's happening with me and a couple others on here. Though the vast majority of people seem to have no problem. That is why I'm jumping to a different phone...that and the power button acts funking when powering on. Most people don't power cycle their phone for weeks or even months at a time, so, for most this is a non issue. But, getting it to turn on reliably (and sometimes charge) is a crap shoot that might require a battery pull.
...but aside from those gripes the phone is an upgrade in every way. Nothing slows this phone down. The camera is WAY better, the audio recording for videos is WAY better, Sense is WAY cooler--if sense is your thing...it's not mine.
You can never use the 3D feature during the entire time you own the 3D, and it is infinitely better than the OG Evo. I loved my OG Evo, but this is a MUCH more powerful device and it is obvious after using it for 5 minutes. Not to mention, my previous Evo was always running out of space (even with ext3 upgrade and A2SD) to the point where I couldn't even get market updates without removing an app or two.
Then there's the screen resolution.....much better on the 3D. The native HDMI out via the MHL adapter works lovely without any 3rd party apps. Battery life is much better on the 3D, too. It's also nice to run the newer version of Sense without all the lag.
I say: Do it.....you won't be disappointed.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

Evo 3d of course.. my friend had the original one.. and he is always having problems wit it... plus the 3d battery last longer and faster... ...
EVO 3D, hands down. Don't spend 125 on Seido. Go on eBay and get three extra batteries for ten bucks, way cheaper, easier to carry, looks better, and last longer, Will cost you ten bucks and you'll make a profit if you sell your old stuff, you're going make a profit.

Is it me or is the 3d not even in the same ball park

I know this may have been discussed, but I went to look at the samsung nexus and samsung galaxy sII and wow do theses phone blow the 3d away. I was really surprised. The 3d is not even in the same ball park. I like my 3d but the 2 just make it feel so cheap. The screen doesnt even compair to either 2. The cameras are so much better than the 3d. If anyone says different they are on crack. Come a few more weeks i'll be able to upgrade and once sprint gets the samsung nexus I will defiantly make the switch. I have always had htc phones but its time to move on to bigger and better things.
They may seem nice at first but I've had nothing but bad experiences with samsung phones. I'm just one person though...I'm gonna stick with htc. Just my 2 cents.
We're comin from a pure power source.
it's just you.
to each his own though. my honest opinion of the s2 was that it felt cheap like a toy and had no "robust" feel to it. the earpiece speaker/call quality was **** compared to my 3D, the screen was low resolution, it had all kinds of bugs, and the OS looked like something from a nintendo game.
i will reluctantly be buying a nexus as well, reluctantly. and it will just be to try it out. i am skeptical simply because it is a samsung.

I'm gonna help you out and predict most people's responses:
Troll, have a good life, great story bro, etc.
You might consider giving a better argument. For instance, my gf's galaxy nexus seems to have a brighter and sharper screen. It's also a light phone. The camera appears to instantly take the shots. In fact I took a photo with it of a moving car and the car was barely blurred.
Yeah im in no way bashing Htc I was just really surprised. I know getting updates from samsung is like pulling teeth thats why im going with the nexus straight google.

True ... The argument just go see for yourself and compair. Like I said i like my 3d, but these just seem to be in a different class.
I hated how the EVO 3D felt in contrast to my Exhibit II 4G. Something about the overall plasticness that makes it feel lighter and more better.
Not to mention, the plastic body helps absorb shock much better than the dense material HTC uses. I'm glad I got rid of my EVO with its crappy radio.
My 2¢
I've had them all.
Motorola - best antenna
Samsung - lightest
HTC - most development
Or you could just go buy an iphone. Studies have shown, if you own an iPhone you're more likely to have sex
Go for it and enjoy! I'm happy with my 3D and the better dev community here.
Yes it is in the same ball park! I had the SGS2 for about 5 months and yes it was very good and I loved the super amoled plus screen, the things i don't like about it is that if feels cheap in the hand and the lack of Led Notifs (yes you can get bln but that doesn't cut it) Also Touchwiz sucks. From personal experience I would say the SGS2 devs are superb and it does have a great community, I have not looked around the 3D's forum to compare the two, even if it did have a bad community I don't mind as I got this phone at a great price and ill hopefully have it until it's life is over (which I hope isn't soon)
If you want a phone that feels like you could break it apart with you hands by all means go for the Sgs2. The galaxy nexus on the other hand I have to agree that it does look like it's in another league.

Dev support here is huge, and never liked Samsung aside from their screens to an extent...

I liked using my Evo 3D. I'm using a Nexus S 4G right now (got a really good deal), and I just love the screen. The amoled screen, to me, looks much better than the TFT displays HTC uses. The 3D screen is light years ahead of the Evo 4G screen with it's pink hues when displaying at white background.
I will also say the camera sensors in the samsung devices are of better quality than what HTC uses. Again, this is in my experience, and I'm also not a professional photographer.
To say the 3D is not in the same ballpark as the SGSII, or Galaxy Nexus really isn't fair. At the time of release, the 3D was almost on top of the world. Shortly thereafter, the GSII came out, with its exynos processor, which has better performance than the Snapdragon used in the HTC devices.
Also, the Galaxy Nexus is a newer phone, with a larger screen, higher resolution, plus it's running the latest version of Android. This phone will eventually become "crappy" as the quad core devices come out, or future versions of android roll out that make this phone "sluggish". No phone stays on top for very long. The Nexus One, and Evo 4G are the only phones that have largely kept their halo status, despite their age.
in my opinion from first glance its easy to choose the gs2 or galaxy nexus over the e3d. but after having played with all 3 and knowing ppl with the others and there expierence im gonna go ahead and stick with htc..
screen wise although i love how awesome the super amoleds look the low resolution on the gs2 with such a big screen is a super turn off for me. the galaxy nexus on the other hand is just pure awesomeness screen wise. but the e3d's size and resolution are way more important than how vibrant it is. and this one might just be me but i find the slcd color reproduction to be way more accurate and not excessively vibrant as oppsed to samoled but the blacks suck..
as for the processor i still cant figure out why everyone goes crazy over the exynos its an awesome processor but as is the msm8660 in the e3d neither chip beats the other outright both having strong and weak points. and if uve played with a sense 3.5 or ics rom u know how awesome this phone will be when we do eventually get our update. right now thou its still great sense 3.0 isnt as fluid as 3.5 or above but its fast and runs apps amazingly. i cant stand touchwiz but thats not important because some ppl do. only stock android or sense for me
camera ill give that one to samsung they win big time haha. but the e3d camera still gets the job done and with the right settings i still manage to get some great shots.
i want to get the nexus ive been wanting one forever but the only thing stopping me is the lack of a microsd which isnt to crazy because id still have the same amount of memory i do now but there is no room for expansion which sucks. and i might actually miss sense to much. the widgets mainly but for me sense makes android so easy to get around.
and the build quality of sammy phones is just terrible. such great hardware put into this cheap plastic shell feels like a toy. i love my evo and my e3d ive dropped em several times and have no dents or scratches on my screens and ive never used a case the worse ive gotten is wear marks from using them for so long...
dont overlook the e3d it stands up really well against those two. they all got their perks that make em great just pick which is right for you.
I'm not sure why everyone gets hung up on the "poor build quality" of the samsung devices. They are made of plastic, and are light weight. Other than that, they are built very solidly. They do have glossy plastic, which shows scratches much easier than on matte plastic. The Evo 3D is entirely encased in a plastic wrapper, but it's heavy. The weight is the only difference in "build quailty".
HTC has had issues with light leakage around their screens. Dust getting between the digitizer and the LCD. I've heard of samsung phones getting blown speakers, lower signal quality (both wifi and 3G/4G), and lack of updates, but beyond that, their devices are fairly solid. HTC has recently been putting out better quality devices, so they have learned from past mistakes.
I'm just curious to see if there are truly a higher percentage of breakage with samsung phones, vs HTC phones.
Please note: I'm not hating on HTC phones, as every smartphone I've ever owned, with the exception of the Nexus S 4G, have been made by HTC. I just don't hear about samsung phones breaking all the time.
The nexus just came out, it should be "better"
The gs2 is good too but they have made like 10 skus of one device and mismatched different hardware on each one which blows for the end user
big screen with no HD, this one has this chip, 4g here not 4g there.... pure milk age of there first widely popular phone

It's you. One word. Touchwiz.. At least we have the option of either sense, aosp, or miui.
I love my 3D. My next phone will be the next HTC Lte phone in sprints lineup.
Sprint EVO 3D.
HW version: 002
TWRP v1.1.1
Hboot 1.4.1000
Radio: 1.06.00.1216
for me its the glossy plastic that feels cheap. the lightweight is nice but i prefer a lil weight like the e3d gives u a better grip on it in my opinion. my cousin had the vibrant and any drop wouldnt break the phone but would eat chunks of that plastic were with the plastic htc uses it doesnt dent so easily worst u get is a nice scratch. the galaxy nexus seems interesting because it looks and feels much higher quality imo but i havent heard much if it actually is.
now for defects i havent experienced any and this is my 3rd htc android phone (hero, evo, evo3d) now im probably just lucky as both my evos were launch day and my hero i bought after at&t decided to rape me with some bull**** bill lol. i know there have been defects and although they r bad i much rather have light leakage or dust as opposed to weak signal and no gps.. but thats what warranties are for. there will always be a bad apple in a bunch as long as i can get it replaced for free i wont complain about it
i dont hate samsung btw. there phones are nice ive been considering getting one but for now im liking what htc has been doing and unless samsung changes it up its probably gonna stick that way because from the rumors of sense 4.0 i think im going to fall in love all over again..
only gripe i have with htc that i think they should consider is jumping on the samoled bandwagon as long as they keep the high resolution it would make them the top choice haha
Having had the Sprint version of the SGSII for a few months, I can definitely say this phone is in the same ballpark. My main issue with the SGSII (again, I'm only referring to the Epic Touch 4g here, I have no experience with the other versions) was the build quality, followed by the array of annoying bugs.
The build quality was particularly bad, the plastic felt very cheap and was scuffed extremely easily. The back of the phone is made from some of the thinnest and flimsiest plastic ever, it would come off so easily. The redeeming factor here was the screen, it was fantastic and easily one of the best screens on the market right here. The resolution was a little low but definitely not bad.
Moving on to the bugs...
The first bug that became apparent to me (and practically everyone else) was the random loss of service that would occur. It became very annoying when your phone would randomly drop out of service and stay like that until you clear the RAM or reboot the phone. Many people couldn't even use the phone for a business phone because they had to remain in contact with people, and having to check constantly for LoS was a HUGE annoyance. Next is the GPS, utterly terrible, there are no other words to describe it, it would take up to 20 minutes at times just to get a lock. I remember on one occasion a few days after buying the phone, I was planning on going to a concert and using it to navigate (Between the Buried and Me/Tesseract/Animals as Leaders ) but on the way back I could not receive a lock on the satellites and by the grace of god I somehow managed to make my way back home.
Still, the SGSII is an amazing phone with great specs, but in my personal opinion, from the build quality and support from htc alone, this is better.
Jesus guys....... no offense, but are we comparing a phone that was released June of last year. Buy what you like!! All three are great phones!!
I've handled the E4GT, the GNex, and, of course, my own Evo 3D.
And I prefer the 3D by far. The E4GT, while fluid, feels too insubstantial for my tastes. The 3D is thick and heavy, and I love that. My Evo 4G survived drop after drop and it still works, and I'm confident my 3D will be able to do the same (In fact, near the end of my time using the OG Evo, I would throw it every time it overheated and shut off; still nothing wrong with it besides a few scratches and that overheating issue).
The E4GT may have a better camera, but the 3D is no slouch itself. I have been very satisfied with the pictures I have taken; I'm not a professional photographer by any means, and most of you are in the same boat.
I have always looked at Sense as superior to Touchwiz. Touchwiz is more fluid, but Sense seems to have better integration and it just feels more solid.
It's the development community that makes the difference though. Compared to the 3D, the development community for the E4GT is abysmal. As said by Viperboy, "I really can't wait to get the Galaxy Nexus & get rid of the E4GT. What a development failure, IMO. Phone is great but no good development." Last I checked they barely if at all have CM and MIUI, and they don't have much at all for ICS.
The GNex is a good phone, but the specs are a bit disappointing and I don't see it as being an immensely better phone once other phones start to run ICS. It's main advantage is the screen.

EVO 4G LTE Impressions

Hey guys.
Some of you may know me from the Evo 3D section. Recently, my 3D's touchscreen started to fail on me (a known quality-control issue) and I evaluated my options on repairing it and came to the conclusion a new phone is a better investment.
I've been researching the living crap out of the Galaxy Nexus and the 4G LTE (The GS3 is waaaay outside my price point). It seems more and more likely that the 4G LTE is simply a better phone.
So now, this thread. Before I pull the trigger, I want the scoop on this phone from the only users I trust; XDA users. Tell me what you love about this phone, what you hate, what to watch out for, whether or not you regret it, anything. As much detail as possible, please
This phone will genuinely have to last me two years (buying it off contract). I need to know that I can count on this in the same way I was able to count on my HTC Hero (which I feel was more dependable than the Evo 3D).
Thanks guys. I look forward to possibly joining you in this forum in the future.
What's up man?! Go ahead and pull the trigger is what I say. I didn't consider it that huge of an upgrade personally but I figured id try it out for 14 days and return then try the GS3 then make my decision. I ended up keeping it and deciding to do so very quickly.Lol. Very 1st thing that got me was the thinness and how great it felt holding.....it felt really nice....and the screen is ike candy for your eyes. My experience with sense 4 and the speed made me question the need to root (blasphemy I know) but I did anyway. I love the camera software and the phone charges fast and really last....the sleeping is incredible. I live everything about it except the shiney black top....other than that in my opion its the best Evo ever and top phone now.

After my first experience with the EVO 3D (3 lemons in under a month), I thought I'd never own an HTC phone again. I went as far as saying I'd never piss on an HTC phone if it was on fire. This phone is making me eat those words. I don't even know why I gave them another chance but I'm glad I did. I wanted a great screen, fast processor, and a relatively "future proofed" phone and this totally fit the bill. It was between this and the Gnex but with the connectivity problems, notoriously weak antennae and glacial charging I rolled the dice on the EVO.
I'm really digging the snappiness overall, running Nova launcher and MeanICS 0.5 ROM. The screen is gorgeous, especially coming from a Photon, and the camera is just about neck and neck with my 4S (work phone). I've been shooting with it for about a week and love love love the pictures it takes.
The only thing I don't like is the car dock has a really finicky usb connector and no sound comes through said connector making it a real bummer when I want to use the phone as an aux music source.
With ROM floodgates starting to open, I heartily endorse this phone to anyone who is in the market. Even stock with Nova launcher works really well, I'm not a fan of Sense but I will admit it was way better than what came stock in the Evo 3D.
Omg we need a Liquid Rom in here! I haven't ran something from you since the HREO CDMA days! Your Sense Rom was the best!

I sold my preordered Evo for a pretty penny and bought a Galaxy Nexus for dirt cheap. While the Nexus was good, the battery made it just OK. It just wouldn't last. The screen was nice but put it next to the Evo and nice becomes wtf. The Evo comes with a microSD slot for my 64GB card (huge plus). The battery in the Evo lasts a whole day a whole night and in to the next afternoon. With heavy use, I mean playing with it constantly from games to web to calls it easily can last 12-15 hours. That right there sold me. I had the option for the GS3 as well. I was really thinking I would switch, considering I had the Epic and the Epic Touch. I.couldn't bring.myself.to return it. Too GREAT of a phone. Plus the kickstand is great. I watch a lot of Netflix while waiting for freight. There isn't a single con and a long list of pros. BUY IT!

Ah, someone who understands the build quality woes of the Evo 3D. In the short year I've owned it, the screen plate near the cap buttons has "sunk" down into the shell, the battery cover has become lose, the outer 'lining' is coming off, and the power button and volume buttons are almost hilariously mushy (never know if they're working).
I'm sorely searching for the build quality of HTC that I used to know, from the days of the Hero all the way back to the original Titan and Apache (those things were amazing). It seems you feel that they've recaptured this "Evo" namesake.

How's the screen at repelling fingerprints? I know that it's supposed to come with an oleo-phobic coating, but do you think it would be worth getting a screen protector?
Great phone; buy it! :good:

I've been a happy owner of the 3D for the past year, but after flashing the Virgin Mobile FW and finding out from Sprint that I have a free upgrade, I'm picking up the 4G LTE on Monday. I just figure the time is right to make the jump since as of now there's no downgrade for the FW, no official ICS release, and WiMax is dead. Base on this thread, I'm in!

Also coming from the 3D, I decided to pull the trigger on this phone earlier this month.
Personal pros: Size, feel, battery life
Cons: Wifi/3G dropout, multitasking (primarily Sense reload)
I rooted immediately, switched to Apex Launcher, and tested a few custom ROMS.
Temp bricked it yesterday w/ the S-OFF method, and returned it to BB to swap out in hopes that it would fix the Wifi/3G dropouts. Wifi seems to be better, 3G dropouts still exist, so I'd imagine it'll be a radio/firmware fix in the future. I'd also imagine the aggressive and clumsy multitasking will also be resolved when source is released from HTC and we can get some custom kernels.
SG3 is released for the public on 7/1 @ BB, so I'll go back to play around w/ it a little bit before my 30 day window of opp. is closed. All in all, I'm leaning towards keeping the LTEvo due to the development community and overall feel of the phone.
Lastly, I was going to go right back and root after getting phone #2, but simply installing Apex over stock everything hasn't been bad. I think until source is released, I can deal with holding off on root. The apps I rely on work w/o root, FoxFi works w/o root (even though pointless w/ slow 3G data, but hey..), and honestly, until we can start overclocking, undervolting, etc., the only true benefit w/ root access is being able to F w/ the build.prop for GW purposes, density, and whatever. Not enough of a factor IMO to root just yet, though the ROMS available right now are promising!
Verdict: Go for the LTEvo. Enjoyed your work during the Hero days as well!
For the screen, the fingerprints have been less of an issue than my tbolt, but they are still there. I thought the screen really was "scratch proof" until I had it in a bag with my keys and I saw a little scratch right in the effing MIDDLE of the screen! Needless to say, I ordered a matte screen protector and will see if it kills the awesome-ness of how the screen looks and displays.
I honestly cannot agree more with what has already been said about this awesome phone. After coming from my tbolt with a rezound battery (i still use it to this day) and it's crappy battery life to this phone has totally restored my confidence in using smartphones. Instead of thinking "if i play this emulator or watch this video, I'll have to charge it again", I say "I will play this emulator or watch this video and not care because the battery WILL last". I know I sound crazy here, but the battery really is that good. In fact, it's that reason that I haven't rooted and put on a custom ROM because I'm afraid something will happen.
Performance wise, it is just plain sick. It runs the PSXEmulator tons smoother than my TBolt and sense is just awesome. I would consider rooting just for the dual-core mod where the second cpu is always running except for when the screen is off, but again, bye-bye insane battery life (please correct me if I'm wrong).
Physical feel of phone is sweet; the thinness is good and the material is nice; except for that bloody top back shiny cover that drives us OCD guys nuts with fingerprints :O But I did order a case because I'm afraid if I drop it, it will go bye-bye.
I researched heavily this phone and the galaxy nexus and from what I could tell, the nexus didn't have the same power as this phone and because of that, people complained that it ran slower than it should. Also the battery was only so-so.
I have yet to look back and do not regret the money I spent

I read that this was due to aggressive minfree values to keep Sense running smooth. Custom ROMs have already tweaked it, but I actually see this as a plus. I've always used extremely (read: ludicrous) aggressive minfree and OOM values, because I damn near never multitask, I only ever do one thing at a time.

Heh, no skinny jeans on this boy, don't worry. I might delve back into it again, we'll see.

It seems as though I might not need to root for a while either. I've actually not needed to tether in a long, long time with my 3D. Root was soley for performance desires. These connectivity issues are getting a it worrying though...
And thanks! I didn't realize my Hero ROM had such a reputation haha.

It looks like the battery usage will be insane for me. All these use-cases appear to be with heavy usage and good battery life, so I can't wait to see what my mild usage will result in.
Thanks for the feedback guys, I'm loving reading all these experiences!
No signal is fine for me as I'm in a well covered area. I could be a tad stronger but that's about it.

My 3D would always kill itself trying to find signal where I live. I'm hoping that won't be an issue with the LTE.
Amazon has some great prices on this phone in and out of contract.

I dont mind the killing of apps as much as I do the tabs in the web browser..sometimes esp. With online banking I run into issues..it happens pretty much instantly..I've adjusted my min free settings as well as flashed about every rom besides aosp and my phone still kills apps like that's its job..I would just like the option to adjust it or have it ignore my web browser as I'm pretty good about closing things out..buts that's my only issue and it will be fixed..the build is bar none and battery is sick..camera is on par with top cell phone cameras and the UI in the camera app is best in class..i never miss a shot ..it will be good to see u in here liquid..to defend against the trolls and fanboys LOL
