ClockworkMod Recovery for Samsung Galaxy 5
Current release - v0.7 - 6 January 2012 [CWM Ver. 5.0.2.7]
What is ClockworkMod Recovery? From AddictiveTips:
ClockworkMod – also known as Clockwork and CWM – is a custom recovery for Android phones and tablets that allows you to perform several advanced recovery, restoration, installation and maintenance operations on your Android device that aren’t possible with the stock recovery.

What does it mean for us Galaxy 5 users? Apart from all the goodies like backup, restore and SD card partitioning, the biggest thing is this: Odin is no longer needed to flash new ROMs!
FAQ:
Will this overwrite my current ROM? No, it only replaces the (horrible) Samsung recovery partition. The rest of your system will remain untouched.
Why don't you support dual filesystems in one package? ClockworkMod doesn't support multiple filesystems properly. I can create a version that can read EXT4 and RFS, but it cannot reformat partitions as RFS.
Can I use this to flash regular .tar files in the same way as Odin? No. ClockworkMod uses a completely different (and better) method to update ROMs. The good news, however, is that with a little bit of work, older ROMs can be re-packed in this new .zip update format.
Which ROM packages can be used with ClockworkMod? So far we have my CyanogenMod port and the Motafoca Froyo 2.0.9 ClockworkMod Edition re-release. However, in the future, all ROMS (custom and stock) be made compatible with a little effort.
Installation - Odin Method (tar):
Use this method if you have never flashed ClockworkMod recovery to your phone before.
Download the latest tar release using the link(s) below. Do not extract any files from the .tar file.
Flash the .tar file via Odin using the regular "One Package" procedure. If you need help, consult the relevant wiki page.
Your phone should now automatically reboot into ClockworkMod. Enjoy!
Installation - ClockworkMod method (zip):
Use this method if you already have ClockworkMod installed, and you wish to update the version that already exists on your phone.
Download the latest zip release using the link(s) below.
Transfer the .zip file to your SD card. Do not extract the .zip file - only copy it.
Reboot into ClockworkMod, choose the option Install zip from sdcard -> choose zip from sdcard. Select the current release, and confirm the update by selecting Yes. Reboot and enjoy!
Usage:
ClockworkMod Recovery replaces the old "Samsung Recovery Utils for BML" recovery partition, and you can access it in the same ways as before: either via adb reboot recovery, or in the case of CyanogenMod, by choosing Recovery from the Reboot menu.
Once you've entered ClockworkMod Recovery, you will be presented with several options (some familiar, some not). I won't try to explain all of the options, as there are better guides on the internet (example: the AddictiveTips site above). However, these are the ones you should really know about:
Wipe data/factory reset - same as before
Wipe cache partition - same as before
Install zip from sdcard -> choose zip from sdcard - this is the new method you will be using to flash ROMs and update packages
Backup & restore - this menu lets you perform a full backup or restore of your boot, /cache, /data/ & app2sd partition (which is compatible with mad2sd)
Mounts & storage -> mount USB storage - this lets you enable UMS mode to copy update packages (if you forgot to transfer before rebooting into recovery)
Advanced -> partition SD card - this lets you easily partition your SD card for use with mad2sd or any third-party app2sd solutions. It lets you select the size for the EXT4 partition as well as swap. MAKE SURE TO BACKUP ALL DATA ON YOUR CARD BEFORE USING THIS OPTION.
Important Notes:
If you flash any older ROMs (such as stock, Motafoca 2.0.9.x, DashBlack 2.x, or even my CyanogenMod versions before 0.7) that already contain a recovery.img file, ClockworkMod will be overwritten by the older Samsung Recovery. If this happens, you can simply re-flash ClockworkMod via Odin again. Future ROMs (including v0.7) will not overwrite ClockworkMod in this way.
Changelog:
[CWM Ver. 5.0.2.7] v0.7 tar - 6 January 2012
Updated to version 5.0.2.7
Rebuilt using latest source, and verified to work properly.
Advanced Restore function should now work properly.
[CWM Ver. 5.0.2.6] v0.6 tar - 7 November 2011
Updated to version 5.0.2.6
This is the official ClockworkMod build (compatible with ROM Manager) in tar format. If you have an older version installed, you can install this update via ROM Manager directly.
[CWM Ver. 4.0.1.5] v0.5 tar | v0.5 zip - 21 August 2011
Updated to version 4.0.1.5.
Kernel: rebuilt using gcc 4.3.3 (more reliable).
Improved compatibility with RFS. This version can read and backup RFS partitions, but cannot yet restore backups properly. More work is needed upstream for full RFS support.
[CWM Ver. 4.0.1.4] v0.4 tar | v0.4 zip - 26 July 2011
Updated to version 4.0.1.4.
Kernel: reverted to more stable version. Should fix problems with failed backup/installs.
This update is highly recommended if you are using versions v0.2-v0.3.
[CWM Ver. 4.0.1.0] v0.3 tar | v0.3 zip - 19 July 2011
Updated to version 4.0.1.0.
[CWM Ver. 4.0.0.8] v0.2 tar | v0.2 zip - 10 July 2011
Updated source to .8 release.
Replaced CodeAurora kernel with new Samsung Mini/Ace kernel - fixes USB & general stability problems.
Small improvements to flashing code.
[CWM Ver. 4.0.0.5] v0.1 tar - 2 July 2011
First release. Only supports EXT4 for now. Can be flashed to any ROM version, but you can only backup ROMs which use EXT4 (Cyanogen, recent MadTeam releases).
RFS version (for stock ROMs only, don't expect constant updates): v0.4-RFS tar | v0.4-RFS zip
Note: the 0.4 RFS version is not working fully - it cannot reformat partitions from EXT4 to RFS format. If you only use stock roms, this will not be a problem, but if you switch between custom and stock ROMs, it will cause issues. Please wait for the next release for this to be fixed.

I guess you can't. But why would you do that after all?
Warranty? Or would it come back as you flash the stock rom?

Flashing stock rom will revert it back
What's the purpose of this mod (respect to di coder) if there's nothing stable to flash?!?

It's funny when people say "with all due respect" but don't really mean it.
CyanogenMod is packaged in zip format. I repackaged Motafoca's Froyo 2.0.9 rom recently, and now that we have a separate RFS version of ClockworkMod, it is now possible to repackage stock ROMs in zip format. It's just a matter of somebody spending 10 minutes to go through the process of converting and then uploading.
This is a quick & dirty way to repackage a ROM: http://www.madteam.co/forum/support-7/how-can-i-convert-a-tar-for-odin-to-a-cwm's-zip/

Hi Subpyske:
I am running the Froyo 2.2 Samsung version in my Galaxy 5. It was downloaded from the XDA only.
I did try to install the CMW using ODIN, it had prompted me to add the Ops File. For which I used the same "EUROPA_v1.0.ops" that I had used for porting Froyo.
I did get a Pass (blue) status in ODIN, I thought I will check if the CMW is installed properly, started my phone in the Safe mode.
But I am still getting the image of Android man working not the CMW screen.
Can you let me know where I have gone wrong?
Please help

Wat do u mean by safe mode....????
After flashing fon should boot into recovery....
Do not do data wipe just after flashing....boot the fon normally then boot to recovery then data wipe....either u will stuck in boot loop.

Hi Aditya,
I meant when I start the phone with Vol down+center button+Power button I only get the Android man working image (Mentioning downloading).
I assume when I do this I am actually supposed to get the CWM menus.

That is the bootloader not the recovery partition.
Usage:
ClockworkMod Recovery replaces the old "Samsung Recovery Utils for BML" recovery partition, and you can access it in the same ways as before: either via adb reboot recovery, or in the case of CyanogenMod, by choosing Recovery from the Reboot menu.

i was flashing my nephew's phone.
i data wiped his phone and i'm stuck in boot loop as you mentioned.
What should i do?
Also, you said i should boot normally and then to recovery...how to boot in recovery?
Should i reboot the system when i get pass screen or i can do before that(i did before the pass screen)?
ROM - I5500LAROJP2.tar (the folder says I5500LUYJP2)
Clockwork - ClockworkMod-Galaxy5-v0.4-RFS
I followed the procedure by using ODIN and the RFS. It booted into Clockwork recovery and then I rebooted the device. How can I check if it's installed?
I seem to have an issue since I did this. I haven't been able to install or update from the Market. It says "Download starting" then "Download paused" then it just stops.
I'm not sure if it's the recovery or not. I didn't do anything else to the phone during this period.
Any help would be great.

Hi, I'm running a stock P500 and I'm a bit disappointed with its performance. I'm looking for a ROM which is feature-complete, i.e. no missing features such as Bluetooth calling, etc. and minimal to no deviation from the stock Android UI. Any suggestions?
use megatron ROM it is the closest in my opinion and has very good performance but i would suggest trying the other ROMs that have gingerbread like miks cm7 they are not missing much and what they are missing you can get back

Ok, so this is all kinda new to me so I wanted to make sure that I have the basics covered:
1. I need to root my phone. I'm running Android 2.2.2 so I guess that means I need to use gingerbreak. It's an .apk file that I need to install on my phone and then I run it to gain root access. Are there any command line actions needed for gingerbreak?
2. After rooting, I need to install a ROM manager such as CWM or AmonRA. If I'm not mistaken, the program itself will install the custom recovery, right? And how do I boot into that recovery mode?
3. After booting into recovery mode, I need to do a nandroid (?) backup of my current ROM, right? And the backup of my stock ROM is restored through the same custom recovery, yes? Would restoring the stock ROM unroot my phone and remove the custom recovery as well?
3. After backing up, I need to flash the custom ROM which should be saved as a .zip file on my SD card. Do I need to worry about the kernel as well?
Sorry if I have a lot of questions.

1. Install it, open it and select "Root"
2. No, the root program won't install the recovery. You need to do that; the easiest way is by Rom Manager (download from market); boot in recovery: turn off the phone and start it by pressing at the same time: home + vol down + power key and release at lg logo to enter custom recovery or just select boot into recovery from ROM Manager
3. Yes, make a backup and to restore it just select "restore" from the same place. No, you will restore the backup you just made so your phone will be exactly the way it was when you created the backup (including apps, settings etc)
4. Yes, you will enter "install zip from sdcard -> choose zip". Don't forget to wipe cache, dalvik cache, data/factory reset and format /system before you flash the rom. Other kernels are not mandatory but highly recommended (the differences are big) - also wipe just cache & dalvik cache before flashing the kernel

Thank you. What are the precautions that I need to take to make sure I don't brick my phone? Also, what are the chances of my phone getting damaged and at which point during those steps is it most likely to happen?

The chaces of bricking the phone are very small.
What can happen:
- some people reported that their phone got bricked when they installed the recovery with ROM Manager (this can be easily undone, there is a thread about this). Never happened to me, everything went smooth & fast. There are other ways to install a recovery if you don't want to use ROM Manager, just check the Development section.
- the ROM you choose can be uncompatible with your recovery (all the new roms are compatible with clockworkmod recovery (this is the recovery you will install via ROM Manager); there are some older roms which are compatible only with AmonRA)
- after flashing a custom kernel the phone might not boot (no panic, just flash the rom again or restore backup); check if your ROM is compatible with the kernel you choose
Flashing with recovery is very safe because everything can be easily undone. As long as the phone boots into recovery there is no panic.
But most of the time if your cautious and do everything as told your fine~~
hahaha.. Enjoy..
Rom manager give Cwm.. So no hassle..

Thank you. When I backup my stock ROM, the output is a .zip file which is no different from how the custom ROM zips are packaged, right? Also, would you know if Gingerbreak supports unrooting? I appreciate all of your help and I'm quite excited to root my Optimus One.

Your backup will appear as a folder on the root of your sdcard (/clockworkmod/folder with the date of your backup). You need to save that folder on your pc just to be safe.
Yes, gingerbread supports unrooting
No problem Just have fun )

Thanks! Is it safe to do all the flashing/work from within ROM Manager? It just seems too easy to be true.
Also, is there a 'compatibility matrix' of some sort for the different ROMS and kernels available? Since I want GB, I'm planning on flashing Mik's CM7 mod. Is Franco's kernel compatible with that?

I say it's pretty safe. As I said, worked like a charm for me.
mik_os's rom is flashable via clockworkmod recovery and compatible with franco.kernel (bfs version).
If you are interested in a froyo stock rom with just the root and a performant kernel like franco's one, I could cook a rom for you...

Thanks. I was able to gain root as well as install CWM. I'm currently backing up my current ROM. Now I'm not sure if this is a stupid question but when I install a custom ROM, wouldn't that overwrite CWM? How do I go back to recovery then, say, to reflash my original ROM?
Flashing a rom through recovery does not overwrite the recovery.
And you can always boot into recovery by pressing and holding home+volume down+power when the phone is off till the recovery menu boots.

For flashing rom : wipe everything, partition SD card only of you want to use a2sd or data2sd (check ciaox's REPO thread for more info about these two) and then choose flash from zip. If you are wiping battery stats then do it when you are fully charged.
For flashing kernel : wipe cache, dalvik cache and battery stats. No need to partition SD card.
EDIT: yes you need to flash zram initialiser. Keep in mind to flash Cfs version for froyo and bfs version for gb roms. Also always reboot between multiple flashes.

Boot to recovery and follow the directions from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=15801906
Make sure you're running a rooted device.
Root your device and install ClockworkMod Recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118693)
Do a Nandroid backup!
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition) - do it for real.
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery.
Do not reboot! We mean it - do nothing except choose zip and continue next step (if you come back to us with permission issues in install, we will know you did not read the directions and will call you an idiot). If it just plain hangs, reboot directly back into ClockworkMod recovery and continue at the next step.
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery, again (due to a bug in the install).
Reboot
Install the Google Addon through ROMManager which is easiest, but you can
download the gapps.zip and install via ClockworkMod recovery instead.

Notice you have to flash it twice from recovery.
Edit: That stable has been reclassed as a release candidate; just download the latest nightly a LOT has changed since Oct 10th.
Why dont you try going into the recovery mode Volume UP (instead of Down) + Home button and Power key -- see if you can redo the whole thing.

Hi All,
I'm a newbie with Android modding, sorry!
Long story short, I have a rooted Galaxy S2 with CWM 4.0.0.2 on it, friend helped me with that.
I have "Rom Manager Premium v5.0.0.6" (paid) on my phone and I also have "ClockworkMod Touch" (paid) on there. (Yes, I know you can do all this for free manually, I just figured for 5.99 + 1.99 if it's easier, it's less than 2 coffees)
When I first open ROM Manager it says
Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 4.0.1.5
Latest Recovery: ClockworkMod 4.0.1.5
ClockworkMod Touch is available!
Up the top of the program I can press "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" it asks me what phone I have. I choose the bottom one Samsung GalaxyS2 (retail purchased, in Australia - outright phone?) it then downloads says "Successfully downloaded ClockworkMod recovery!" no mention of flashing it, just downloading it?
The version numbers still say "Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 4.0.1.5"
If I re-boot and hold down the 3 buttons will result in v4.0.0.2 appearing still.
Alternatively in ROM Manager, near the bottom I can choose "Flash ClockworkMod Touch" it also downloads but doesn't prompt me what phone I have. It also says
"Successfully downloaded ClockworkMod recovery!" It also doesn't seem to flash CWM Touch, just download it.
Once this is complete up the top it now says.
Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 5.8.1.5
Latest Recovery: ClockworkMod 5.8.1.5
These numbers will now stay at the top 'locked' at 5.8.1.5 even after a re-boot. Although holding the 3 buttons will result in v4.0.0.2 booting.
Finally, if I choose "Reboot into Recovery" from within ROM manager it boots into a menu I've never seen before and says exactly the following
"Android system recover (3e)" (in blue)
<some standard menu items>
At the bottom in red it says
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted. (in yellow)
Just to make it clear, I do know that a new recovery isn't a new phone OS (ROM?) I just wanted to put the latest recovery on before fiddling.
So am I doing something wrong here?
I'm a relative newb too. But my view is leave all the fancy stuff alone. Just go with the text one that loads when you boot into recovery mode (4.0.0.2). I had a play with the graphical ones, but I found it too confusing.

The SGSII the recovery is combined in kernel so flashing a kernel with updated CWM is way too go...

Even so, my text one is behind the times also though, isn't it?
EDIT: I can't flash a new CWM Recovery from within CWM right? CWM is only for flashing OS roms, the recovery ROM is at a lower level and not so easy to flash.
Correct me if I'm wrong here, I'm still learning.

No touch is an alternative and is in my view a step backwards in use .

You can flash a custom rom with CWM
? CWM is only for flashing OS roms, the recovery ROM is at a lower level and not so easy to flash.
Not sure what you mean recovery rom ??? OS Rom???
CWM ???? cwm manager or cwm recovery .

So confusing
ROM Manager in Android OS will allow me to load another OS on the phone right? Like go from stock Samsung OS to CM7 for example, if I have the big ZIP file? it replaces the OS on the phone.
ClockworkMod recovery (bootable) is the same thing right? They both do the same thing, allow you to load a new ROM on the phone?
The question is, how do I put the latest recovery bootloader (whatever it is?) on the phone? Mine is out of date and I want a new one on there.

Hi All,
I'm a newbie with Android modding, sorry!
<some standard menu items>
At the bottom in red it says
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted. (in yellow)
Just to make it clear, I do know that a new recovery isn't a new phone OS (ROM?) I just wanted to put the latest recovery on before fiddling.
So am I doing something wrong here?

That page says "(CM9 or any other ICS based ROMs are not supported)" I want to eventually put CM9 on the phone though?
Incase this is of use.
I believe it's the stock Samsung ROM, I haven't updated it yet, didn't want to fiddle with the phone OS stuff until I had updated the recovery console.
Model number GT-I9100
Android Version 2.3.3
Baseband version I9100XXKE7
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKF3-CL276555

Build number

Help any?
Not willing to change my OS really until I'm confident I have the right recovery console and a complete backup of the phone (manually via USB / Titanium and a ROM dump, however that works) – does anything backup the cache as well? Like the whole works?
Any other tips?
Please?

can you explained why recovery is combined in the kernel? is this how it is for most phones? I come from the Nexus S where recovery was always separate from kernel.....
Hence the confusion.

Custom kernel builder may or may not add recovery to the kernel its as simple as that .

As to the OP i am lost as to what is wanted .
Root and CWM is simply flashing via Odin backup via CWM no more effort required .
Root + CWM .

I already have root access.
I already have CWM 4.0.0.2 bootloader (recovery?) installed and it's bootable.
I have Clockwork mod the actual application in the OS
I have ROM manager the app in the OS too.
I want to upgrade my CWM recovery bootloader thing, before I fiddle with any new OS ROMs on the device. I'm just being pedantic but I'd prefer the latest loader before I flash a new OS on the device, with said loader.
I can't seem to update the bootloader / recovery from 4.0.0.2 to a newer version within the Android OS (despite ROM manager claiming it can do it)
I also can't seem to do the update from within the recovery manager either.
Do I absoloutely HAVE to use ODIN to flash a new recovery console?

Huh!? ICS is not officially released yet but there is some pre-relaesed custom versions with there own kernels. Siyah has no need to make it compatible with ICS as its not officially released and im sure he will make this compatible when its officially released in the future. ICS will be pretty much a standard for every Android based systems.

Why would you want to change the OS?? Your running Android!! You mean you don't want to change your ROM until your confident. Do your research!!! Read threads, FAQ and Google anything you don't understand. There is plenty of threads in the Q&A just search for your answer. Read about NANDROID backups, Download mode and Recovery's. If you have an understanding of them 3 you will solve all your problems that you have posted. Don't be lazy!!
MOST OF ALL GROW A PAIR....
I know what download mode is and I know what recovery mode is, the point is on my HD2 I could re-install Android from CWM easily and simply. I could clear cache, clear data, wipe dalvik, load on any ROM I liked and it worked awesome.
I just want the latest version of the recovery software on my phone, mine is well out of date.

Umm, if I'm understanding correctly, you installed the ROM- CM10, that is- and/or kernel via Odin. CM10 and the Mercurius kernel are zip files (.tar, .pit and the like are for Odin, not zips...if I understood correctly).
You want to place the ROM and the GAPPS zips on your actual SD card. Make sure the SD card is working properly. Reset and go to CWM (Power+Vol up).
Then, accd to the instructions on the CM10 page:
"Installation:
Reboot to CWM
Make a Nandroid (optional, but recommended)
Format /system if you had a different GApps package installed
Install ROM
Install GAPPS if you just formatted /system
Wipe data/factory reset if you are coming from Gingerbread
Reboot
??? (wait a while...)
Profit"
I'd say make a backup before doing any of this, but I'm assuming you're beyond that point....But before going on to CM10, it might be a good idea to recover your device first and back it up. Maybe flash a GB rom via CWM or Odin before proceeding to CM10, making a backup just in case...
Ok

Just flash CM10 kernel zip

from CWM5 and then reboot CMW and you will have CWM6..then just install CM10 rom.

would he have to flash the kernel first, though? I'm unfamiliar with rjs, but am assuming that rjs version of CWM would be identical to entropys version of CWM, which means that he could just flash the CM10 ROM since it has the kernel baked in.
When I upgraded from Chip -> CM10, I just flashed via CWM, upgrading both the ROM and CWM in the process.

I remember Dkonzig mentioning this, that the path to JB was through ICS, but for my US device, I just flashed directly to GB. I remember another Int'l GB user who flashed directly to JB and was fine. this is peculiar.
so two methods to choose from, I suppose.

Install Odin on your PC, get the samsung drivers by installing Kies.
Hold down volume down key, middle of d-pad and power buttons all together while phone is off.
Put a different Rom .zip on your sd card using a PC.
Use Odin to flash clockworkmod to the phone, when fiinshed the phone will boot into cwm.
Use cwm to install the zip you put on the sd.
Reboot into the stable ROM.

I use Odin Multi Downloader v4.34
The data partition not formating would be a cause for concern, if I was you I would try formating it with ClockWorkMod by doing a data wipe/factory reset.
If it was me I would use my computer to put CyanogenMod 7.2 .zip file on the SD (its stable and handy for getting things working)
Most stock ROMS won't flash through CWM.
So to summerise I would try this:
Go into download mode.
Link up with Odin and select your OPS file (make sure GTI5500 OR 5503 appears at top and not the word Android)
Select "One Package" in Odin options
Download a .zip of Clockworkmod for galaxy 5
select it as the One Package and don't touch the other boxes...
let clockworkmod flash into the phone and let it boot into it
now try the data wipe in clockworkmod
install the cyanogenmod zip from the sd and reboot
good luck
I've attached my Clockworkmod Zip file. I use it at least once a week so its good

Yep! There is no key combo for recovery on Galaxy5, if I need to boot recovery and cannot load the rom I just put it in download mode and use odin to reflash clockworkmod, then when its finished it auto boots into cwm and I do whatever I need to
