[Q] ROM naming scheme - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've tried to look, but haven't had much success. Is there a post somewhere that explains the naming scheme. For example what do the letters and number in BUKE5, XWKE7 actually mean?

First two indicate region.
KE7 indicates time of release
XW = regional bit
E = 5th month, ie May
7 = 7th build of that month
I think K indicates 11, as in 2011, but I can't remember

Is there a list of what all the region bits are? For example, the Vodafone UK releases are BU, is this UK or specific to Vodafone?

[Q] Difference between new Firmwares.

Im getting a little confused between all these new firmwares that keep appearing.
First things first, what do the code at the beggining actually mean?
XWKI4
For example.
Seen as im base din the UK, what is the default code for here.
Sorry for probably such a simple question, but im a newbie to Samsung, Ask me anything about SE Codes etc and id be abl to tell you in seconds!
Kernel codes etc .

That clears things up a little!
I9100XWKI4 Is European then?
This is standard across most Samsung Phones.
I'll use I9000XWKE3 as an example.
I9000 = Model #
XW = Carrier/Area code. For example, XW = Europe, UG = Bell Mobility Canada.
K = Year = 2011
E = Month = May
3 = Revisions that month.
A lot of people on here think the last 3 digits are important and that if you have 2 KG3 firmware that they are the same. However, this is not the case.
You need to go by all 5 letters due to the fact that each firmware is customized by different groups at Samsung. And to prove this, just look at KG2. There are 2.3.3 KG2's and there are 2.3.4 KG2's.
It's actually possible that one area's KG2 could have been newer than another area's KG4. The best way to check, is to look at the build date in the Build.prop for each firmware.
I hope this clears it up for you.

Rom versions..

Just another quick question... How come 2.3.4 is Ki4 and 2.3.5 is Ki3 ?

Brilliant answer... Thanks alot.. Ill have a look , thanks again.

question about firmware abreviation and origin.

my phone's build name is i9100BVKD7
I wanted to search root kernel for it and noticed I can't find any for this version; then I saw on samfirmware a post about the newest fw explaining the abbreviations:
Firmware version: I9100XXKI3.
XX = Europe.
K = 2011.
I = September.
3 = Version.
on google I get no result of my version.
the thing is that I had a s2 from someone and it was shutting down with no reason on stock and modified rom.. so he changed my phone to this one and from what I see it's from april, that doesn't bother me, but what region does BV stand for then?
and what root kernel should I use?

hit thanks it it helpled you

How to read Android release code

Not sure If I am even calling it correctly. I can follow the order of say 2.3.4 to 2.3.5 as it being Gingerbread releases. What is the rest of the code called and how do you read it. Example uckh7 and uckk6, each letter and number must mean somthing can anyone enlighten me? I understand that kk6 came after kk4 but if i knew the codes it would be helpful.

I covered this in a more detailed manner somewhere else, but this is how Samsung labels their builds for a device:
First two letters - carrier/region code. UC = AT&T, XX and XW are unbranded European regions
Next letter - year. K = 2011, L = 2012
Next letter - month of year. A = January, etc.
Last number - build number of the month for that device.
e.g. UCKK6 is Samsung's 6th build of November 2011 for AT&T on the AT&T GS2. XWKL1 is the first build of December 2011 for one of the unbranded European regions for the I9100.
Some devices use alternate build identification schemes. I9000 was XXJV[a,b,c,d,e,etc] - ICS leaks for the I9100 replace the year with "P".
Thanks you so much. Now I can better compare ROMs and make sure I'm not moving backwards.

Sometimes moving forwards in time is moving backwards in performance or functionality - UCKK6 was pretty much a universal step backwards compared to UCKH7 for example, especially when it comes to anything wifi-related.
Coming from a cappy I have been very happy with the battery life etc on my S2, It's been rooted but is 2.3.4 UCKH7 kernel 2.6.35.7. So no major reason to upgrade other than personal preferance?

[Q] PDA, Phone and CSC codes break down

Hi guys,
Im been trying to decypher my PDA, Phone and CSC codes but have been unable to do so.
Alot of the guides I have found on xda have been for 5 character codes and doesnt really explain 6 character codes like mine.
So mine shows,
AP: I9300XXEMR2
CP: I9300XXEMB1
CSC: I9300VFREMA3
And id like to know what XXE equates to ? some region ?
I do know that the M = year, R = month and 2 = rev.

All I could find was what XX stands for. But what about the E ? I saw some where that this usually means 4.1.2 JB .. just want to confirm if thats true ?
There are no answers in the faqs or anyplace I searched (google and just xda) as to why there is an E now added to firmware codes.
This is probably what is confusing the OP. The ap and cp are XX region. EMR2 is the code for the firmware. Just like EMR1 and ELLA before. Seems Samsung has started a different system. Guessing M and L are still standing for year, but what month is R and why have they added an E.
The VFR is a carrier code I guess, not sure.
It is not nice to point people around when you don't know if there is an answer or not. If you haven't researched it or read about it, then don't claim it is a place you haven't verified it being.
Sammobile does not have codes and google/xda search only explain what I imagine is an outdated naming system.
Anyone know where the E came from and what R means in the latest firmwares?

Thanks a lot wangdaning
Yeah I couldnt really find an accurate answer hence why I posted the question here after doing some research.
This is one of the first threads I came across where someone is asking the exact same question and he seems to think E its 4.1.2.

Just to make sure read search XDA SGS3 5 mins time taken.
XX
Listed countries for Europe .
Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Nordic, Spain, United Kingdom
E build 4.1.2 D 4.1.1
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
On the i9300 International
Generally it would be the below
XX - UK and parts of Europe
E - 4.1.2 (D was 4.1.1, A & B were 4.0.4 would guess F will be 4.2.1)
M - 2013
A - Month
1 - Release
So XXEMA1 would be UK & Europe, 4.1.2, 2013, January, 1st release
This would not be an exact science as you get things like the 'R' which won't relate to a month no idea why its used though
jje, when will you learn to use quote tags?

Thanks. This sort of comment is what most OPs with questions are after. Vouch for it any day.
