I'm thinking about taking my x10i, on my trip to europe for 6+months. Will grab a local sim card, and soo will my friends that are coming. Would it be better to spend money on an mp3 player? or just spend some money on accessories for the x10, 2600mah batt, headphones. Also which media player on the x10 consumes the least amount of power?
I had a look around, but would be really helpfull if i could get all the info compiled into this thread
Thanks in advance for your help!!!
Edit:
I've liked the look of the creative Aurvana X-fi headphones for a while, has anyone here tested them out? they are on special for $129 atm
Assuming you'll have a place to sleep you can charge it every night. I would recommend the extra items for the X10 cause you can enhance the phone and use them later. Besides, if you're anything like me, the least amount of gadget the better. I like to travel light.
The extra battery may come handy if you use GPS all the time. As to mp3 player that's a life saver when you spend large amounts of time in transportation otherwise, if you're looking to do some real tourism, as in: talk to locals, hear the sounds around you and experience the place then you won't be listening to mp3 all the time. I mean, what's the point of travelling if all you do is listen to music 24/7? That will be distracting and you can do it at home.
PS-> get trip journal, it's a nice app.
Well yea, i should be able to charge it every night.... but if I forget or if im on the train over night etc.... Probly will use gps a bit, and would prefer to use just my phone, rather than an mp3 player as well. Well I like having gadgets, keep me busy, will be spending a lot of time on the trains getting from country to country, I am buying 2 eurail passes, save me a hell of a lot of cash But those aurvanas look nice and look very comfy!!!!
Maybe a spare battery instead? can you buy chargers for just the battery? so I could charge it, while its not inside the phone?
Most, if not all trains in Europe have DC outlets, so no problem there
Spare battery might be a good idea, aswell as a pair of good headphones!
Have fun in Europe!
Yea, i forgot that. Also, i have root access to my phone, will i be able to use any sim or will i have to get virgin or third party to unlock it?
Anything about gps over there i should know abt?
Thanks for the help.

If you go by train you'll definitely need to listen to mp3 for long amounts of time.
BTW did you check the enormous amount of low cost flights here? Last time I planned a European trip, staying 3 nights in each town, it was a bit cheaper by plane not to mention an enormous reduction in transportation time. Most one way tickets go for like 50€-120€ but you may be lucky to go as low as 20€. The eurorail pass for 2 weeks should go for 300-400€ so that's at least 4 one way plane trips. If you buy tickets for week days, something like amsterdam->prague->rome->barcelona->paris->amsterdam should be as cost effective as the eurorails.
Check terminala . com for low cost flights. If you use either amsterdam or barcelona as the "hub" town, you get some of the best rates to pretty much everywhere. Besides those 2 are my favorite European cities.
I don't have enough posts here to post a link. So search "Xperia X10 Cradle 2nd battery" in amazon . co . uk and you get a nice cradle to charge both the phone and a 2nd battery simultaneously.
GPS> works the same anywhere in the world as far as I know.
SIM> you'll need an unlocked phone. One SIM won't do if you constantly change countries as you'll be paying expensive roaming costs.
Thanks for your help i spent nearly 2 months in europe last year. And we have worked out the amount of days n countries about e need for the eurail passes. But some countries we are flying to, ireland and ibiza.
Edit:
I used an irish vodafone sim last time and it worked everywhere, for txting mainly.

Yep, unlocked phone is a must...
For carriers I would suggest Hutchinson 3G, as they have free roaming in every European country in which they are available!
GPS works just the same as anywhere else in the world
Thanks a lot! Any suggestions, on where to get it unlocked in melbourne?

Well I had ordered my G-tablet from Amazon and when I got it it was sealed in the cellophane and everything looked in order. When I charged it and powered it up though it didn't go through the new setup per say as the manual states.
Plus many apps were already on the home screen like angry birds. Plus a live walpaper was set as the walpaper. I had trouble trying to install some apps plus I kept getting force closes on almost all apps. I decided to do a factory reset.
Let me say now it looked and performed like a brand new one going through the steps. Like setting up family and name accounts. setting the time. wireless connection...
This makes me unhappy because anytime somebody returns a product for whatever reason the item is suppose to go back to the manufacturer to be checked out and repaired if necessary. Then I believe they are sold as refurbished.
This sounds like someone at amazon got it back under the belief that somebody just wanted to return it. They in turn put plastic wrap on it and resold it.

Send it back stating what you just stated. It's your money you decide what you want to spend it on. You were purchasing new and that is what you were expecting, however, that is not what you feel you got. So send it back for one that makes you happy.
I believe a lot of gTablets are coming like this.. I got mine 2 or 3 months ago, and experienced exactly this.
As for Angry Birds, I believe they advertise this as coming pre-loaded on the gTablet.
You can return it, but I bet many here will tell you that you'll wind up with exactly the same scenario on the new one they send you.
Mine came the same way. I remember someone posting here that a Viewsonic rep said many (or all?) tablets were tested before being sealed up. If you load up the web browser, you might even notice it's got CNN.com cached and displayed, which seems to be part of the test suite. Your tab is likely new as Amazon stated, you just weren't the first human to touch it

No its ok....I'm just glad I decided to select the factory reset. Because there were many things going wrong that shouldn't have been..As far as angry birds being include, or not is not what really told me someone had set this tablet up because it didn't go through the normal process of step by step setup procedure.
I had several apps on the home screen, which when I reset it I had very few and no angry birds, but hey it worked and setup an account like a new tablet out of the box was suppose to..
So all is well. I'm just stating this isn't right if Amazon is doing this with returns.
Somebody had mine not knowing what they were doing that caused many problems...

did yours come with the inability to install basic apps like amazon app store app, or force close on everything you did. nothing would play correctly. Videos. I bet not. So whomever had their hands on this one did a little more than they were suppose to..
When new it asks you to set the time and if your account if a family and the names of the family, setup email, setup wireless in a certain order. My tablet didn't do that....any of that. It was like powering up somebody elses tablet without their email account or wifi.
Paul
Anyway all is good..
To others if you have one new out of the box and have a lot of problems..force closing of apps then I suggest you just do the factory reset. save you a lot of headache down the road
Assuming you had the falling leaves live wallpaper, this is how they are currently shipped.
This is how they come. I had lots of apps FC right out of the box. As well as all the icons on the desktop and no 'new user' setup. This is normal as long as it had the plastic wrap on it and the actual unit looked untouched.

ok this is normal and weird at the same time with the ( this is how they come live wallpaper and apps force closing), but the strange thing that everyone will have to agree on is the restore, or resetting of the tablet where e
verything is suppose to go back to the way it was out of the box. Live wallpaper and the installed apps like angry birds should have been there. Right? I mean if this is how they ship. No not on my tablet. i got aw blue background with clouds and only the basic apps, which is fine because with the system reset I didn't have anymore forced close apps and i was able to download and install amazon app store without problem and actually use it. thank u to everyone that commented
Mine was the same way when I got it... After I turned it off for the first time and back on, it gave me the "out of the box" setup screen. It does seem like Viewsonic would want to make a better impression for the user.

I wouldn't know -- about 10 minutes after I received it, I had already flashed a different ROM After reading the horror stories, I was not interested in even one minute of the stock experience.
Seems from my memory most of the ones from Woot.com came like this. Mine did.
I got mine from Woot and it came with Angry Birds preinstalled. The worst thing is that I can't even play, it show a blank screen when I tried to run the application. Only when I update the ROM to 3588, the apps worked!
I have two gtablets and they both came pretty much the same way. Now you should be able to understand why the gtablet somewhat flopped when they were first released with software like this. I have kept one of them stock that my 5 year old daughter uses and mine has Cyanogenmod 7 on it and they both actually work well. Out of the box was pretty ugly though.

How do you flash or change the ROM?
I bought 2 gtablets fromwoot and both came intheexact same state. Never felt used but both tablets hadthe exact test proceduredone even had the icons on the sameplace somaybe its a nandroid(or master pre rom) made tohave angrybirds preloaded
Any way both got rooted and rommed so i dont complain

Mine was the same. The packaging looked new, but the extra launcher on it meant it wasn't direct from the factory.
After a week of not being sure if I wanted to send it back, I found a rom I like, and am very happy with it.

As today is he official launch in the UK... who picked up already his device and what are the first impressions?
As said in my Q thread, I picked it up yesterday (despite most stores saying they couldn't sell it yet). I was the second person to get one from the big Phones4U in Leeds.
After palying with it all afternoon Yesterday and most of this morning (yeah I should be working!), I love it. It's soooo silky smooth. All my favourite games run perfectly, I've even tried the N64 emulator and it ran effortlessly.
The only niggles I have:
- There's no longer NFC (would have been nice to be future-proofed on that, even though I couldn't use it right now anyway)
- I miss my notification light, but obviously not enough to stop me buying this beast
- It doesn't have the shiny music player from the original Galaxy S
- The clock widgets don't bring up the alarm when you press them
- Oh and my apps didn't download when I synched my Google account, so I had a fun time last night manually putting them all back on.
As you can see, trivial stuff that isn't really important.
Ask me anything, I'll try and answer as often as I can, but I do need to get some work done (if I can find the motivation and pull myself away from this phone!)
Oh, one final thing. A quick battery comparison - My Desire HD, at this time of the morning (after I've been playing music and on the internet via 3G/H), would be down to around 50%. This is currently on 70% and I've been playing with it all morning. Just an initial observation, but a positive one.
your thoughts about the weight and the feel of the phone (esp. the back cover)?
I'm amazed at the weight, it feels like a dummy phone (compared to my DHD and old N1).
The build is nice and sturdy for a plastic phone, but the back cover is very thin - I'm scared I'll snap it every time I remove it. Fortunately I shouldn't need to go back in there now that I've stuck my SD in

will it work on ATT frequencies?
Did they lock down 850/1900 so American customers cannot use it?
when you press down on the back cover of the phone..did it creek or seems like its pressing down on pressure..making it feel like its a little loose/flimsy?
also did the phone run hot while using it for sometime?

They are saying in the future the NFC antenna will be in your sim card and there will be software in the phone that can link to that, so dont be too disheartened, you may get it after all, but just not how you expected

Can You run Tegra2-Games?
No creaking on the back cover, it's nice and tight. I can probably see it starting to give over time though.
How do I check Tegra2- specific games (or where can I find one, still don't know if we have Exynos or Tegra) and how do I tell if the US bands are available?
P.s. thanks Jupiter

Hi, congrats on your purchase! I had two brief questions.. can the dock be modified on the homescreen (can you choose which apps go on it), and some photos from other reviews it seemed like people got chargers with EU plugs, did yours come with a UK one? These aren't really pressing issues but I'm just interested really.

I got my Prime for Christmas and I absolutely love it. I didn't have any problems with the screen or wifi (I don't know about the GPS, I don't plan on ever using it so I never tested it). However, I noticed that the battery was behaving weirdly. I didn't really think much of it until a couple of weeks later when it started claiming it was docked even though it wasn't (I don't even own the dock). I decided to look up the battery behavior when docked and it's exactly how my battery had been behaving the entire time. I called up Asus and they have me do a factory reset. It didn't fix the problem, but I knew the ICS update was coming soon so I decided to wait to RMA it. After the ICS update it was still having the same problem so I called them up and sent it in. That was almost a month ago. They received my tablet a little over three weeks ago and the day they got it the status said it was being repaired. Ever since then it's been waiting ("Waiting-[WB5] Wait for Repair\Test\Aging" to be exact). I've called them several times and finally managed to get it escalated but the status is still the same. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm starting to get really annoyed because the 10-14 days they originally said it would take has long since passed and they won't give me any sort of estimate of how much longer it'll be.
Don't sweat it...its going to come back. I'd call customer service just to check ln it and remind them that you need it back working properly asap.
prime in for repairs
I'm awaiting getting my own prime this Friday and I have had issues previously with certain other devices which had to be sent back to the manufacturer (htc and samsung) the HTC phone i sent in took three weeks for repair but they had promised a similar 10-14 day window and as that time came and went i was forced to call them for status updates. once it had made it to 19 days i called back and specifically asked for one of their tier three service men (similar to a manager) and i told him they had more than enough time to have completed the repairs and had gone 50% longer than i was told would take.
when i gave him the option to either fix it or send it back within 48 hours so i could seek a third party for repairs and have the company be reported to the better business bureau, it was amazing how fast they were able to replace the touch-screen and processor unless they just cloned the ESN into a brand new device and shipped it out to me express delivery.
i'm praying that i dont end up with one of these little guys that's going to have some issues, but if so, please let it be the GPS because i'm never going to be using that anyway. keep in mind the power of the better business bureau, it's a great bargaining tool for getting your promises fulfilled.
"Don't sweat it" boy that easy for some people to say when it's not them waiting for something you have over $500.00 invested in. I too are waiting for mine to return due to it dropping Wi-Fi connections and the screen not responding when touched. I love Asus products but a large company like Asus needs to protect their name and satisfy their customers at all reasonable cost. If there are long delays they should replace the item. They can always sell the return as a re manufactured item, save a customer and get free advertising when the customer tells 10 other people what great company Asus is.
Good news, I just checked the status and it's now ready for shipping! It looks like they're sending me a new one as the serial number changed. Now let's see how long it takes to get back to me.
But yeah, this experience makes me quite reluctant to buy another Asus product of recommend Asus products to anyone. Sure I absolutely love my prime, it's an amazing piece of hardware, but a repair shouldn't take a month.

That is ridiculous. No one should have to push the manufacturer to get it done faster. I have dealt with plenty of repair places that did exactly what they said they would do and were very open about why I wouldn't be getting the product in a timely manner if their where any delays.
I've used Cerberus in the past. And the thing I really liked about this, is that it was possible to command it via SMS besides the web interface.
I lost my phone when I was outside of Europe last year, and I always turn off my mobile date to avoid excessive telephone bills. So I was not able to use the Google app itself to find my phone or to turn the volume on and call it.
All of these things were possible with Cerberus by sending an SMS. I really liked this. But Cerberus got only available by using an subscription. I felt betrayed because of this, because I already paid for the pro-version. So it was probably nothing worth...
So I'm looking for a (possible free) alternative. I've searched google a couple of times for this. But I only find old apps which don't seem to excist annymore.
So, does annyone here know or can recommend me some apps which I also can control by sending SMS/ text messages?
Thanks in advance!
You've been an happy user for many years, you must have paid less than 5$ for the pro license a long long time ago (as I've done), the service isn't running for free, and the pricing is really low for the quality and features it proposes: https://www.cerberusapp.com/pricing
5 euros / 1 device / 1 year
14 euros / 3 devices / 1 year
I would suggest to support the developer here and subscribe anyway, it's not that much, even more since you already trust it, not sure you'll find another service with this longevity, integrity and low prices.
