OK folks,
After a night of wine and tequila on a brother birthday, i got to home with my girlfriend. I get quickly to bathroom and my phone fell out of my coat directly on the toilet. When I saw, I took as fast as possible and not turned over, and dry it with a hairdryer, removed the battery and sim/sd card.
Apparently the screen still with some water on it inside. I didnt opened it because it still on warranty (1 month of use), so i'm freaking out, here in brazil I paid $800 (it costs $1200 really, but i got a promotion) and i'm out of money. So if you guys know something to do and if atrix have a protection, please help me.

Like any other phone that gets wet...battery removal is a priority. Then put it in a ziploc bag of dry, uncooked rice for several days. Your warranty is now void since it's been wet, so dis-assembly shouldn't bother you.
you might as well take it apart to let it dry since your warranty does not cover water damage. you can always try to find some water damage stickers on ebay and replace them and try to get the warranty to cover it...
I already removed the battery, of course. I'm thinking of dis-assembly this and try to replace the water damage indicator, but there is no other sticker that motorola can know that i opened it? because opening void the warranty too.
Lesson learned. Don't put a phone in a pocket where gravity can take over and drop.
That being said, I've fixed a couple wet iPhones by putting it in dry uncooked white rice for acouple days.

Thats not a 'lesson learned'. Every day the first thing i do when get in home is put the cell on its dock, but this time... it happens...
the cellphone is now on white rice uncooked, i'll leave it for some days and will try to call motorola to knows if they can do anything, maybe paying... i know the warranty is on the hell...
i'm just with fear about the water inside the lcd screen... i'll search around an video off dis-assembly of atrix..
My wife dropped hers in the toilet not only is it working fine but the moisture
sensor on the back under the cover is still white.
good thing our phone doesnt have void stickers so we can take it apart how many times we want without worrying, also the lcd is not glued to the digitizer and what not. so if there is water inside you can easily get it out..

Not quite so............corrosion can build up very quickly, and the only way to get rid of that is to take apart your phone, piece by piece, and very carefully clean out any corrosion deposits. There are guides for this with the iPhone, and other phones, but the Atrix is too new I believe for there to be a comprehensive guide showing what needs to be checked and cleaned. Contacts are one of the first places on which corrosion starts to appear.
Pretty sure there are no void stickers on this phone. Also there's only like 5 or 6 screws to take the whole phone apart. All of which are visible from the back. I stripped mine down as soon as I got it. I don't think there's any moisture sensors either. Maybe on the battery itself? If so just get a new battery

must have missed that one. phone comes apart real nice though. I bought mine broken. well the volume keys were messed up and the battery cover wouldn't go on right. obviously it was dropped. I took it all apart and when i reassembled it was fixed lol. one little thing around the volume keys must have been out of place. saved $200 of retail for it too
I had same experience. I did the white rice for a couple days, then switched to flower drying crystals. After a while the phone started to boot again.
To dry out the lcd, navigation is your friend. Drove for a good twenty minutes with the screen on and noticed that the streeks were disappearing. After another day, phone was like factory again.

Specifically in the laundry. I got it out within about a minute, but it was completely submerged and April fresh. I tried the "bag of rice" routine for a few minutes, but I didn't want to wait 24 hours to see if that would work. Found "tear-down" instructional video on youtube. Took it as apart as it would let me (only about 10 screws). Motherboard, camera, power port and some other minor things but that was about it. It was soaked in there. No way rice was going to work. Stood everything on edge, propped up the hair dryer and let it blow for about 1.5 hours (rotating all the parts every few minutes). Put it back together and let my wife turn it on, while I waited in the garage. I couldn't watch. I didn't think I had insurance on it. But, it worked!! Has been perfect for 3 days.

Next time( and you know it'll happen again) 90% alcohol. tear it down, dunk the boards, dry in the oven at 125°. Should rewhiten the humidots too.

That's awesome! In the future, and to anyone else with a similar situation...after the phone is dunked in water somehow...immediately disassemble and SOAK in rubbing alcohol for a good minute. Blow dry the pieces for a few minutes until dry, put it back together....Presto. The alcohol absorbs the water,

I could have sworn alcohol is used because when it dries, it doesn't leave behind minerals/residue that could short out terminals like water does, which is why it is dunked so that the alcohol replaces the water.
Alcohol dehydrates people and causes hangovers, so maybe absorption really is happening?
Alcohol breaks the surface tension of the water molecules and displaces it. Water is bad because as stated when it dries it leaves minerals and other contaminates that will grow dendrites. Microscopic fingers that will punch throught solder mask on boards and puncture insulation on wires. Deionized water is best, but most people have rubbing alcohol..

Yessir totally safe, provided you allow it to dry completely before applying voltage.
FWIW I work in a clean room, I've dropped my cappy in a lake before and brought it back to life using the aforementioned method. As stated I even got the humidots white again.
My daughter fed my laptop a sam adams once... just power the item down or remove the battery asap. Rinse/soak in alcohol. Let dry in the oven at its lowest setting. Anything under 190° is fine. Pray/sacrifice a chicken. Power up and apologize for yelling at your 2 year old...

UPDATE: I chickened out
I burned one of my two insurance replacements. The phone was still working, but the thought of the Tide and Fabric Softner working on my phones insides was too much. I wrestled with the idea of possibly wasting the $199 deductable, but I knew that if I waited for the thing to die in it's own time, I might end up with a refurb replacement.
Good thing too. It's strange, I got the replacement this morning and it's faster!! The battery has lasted all day! I still have 40% left after 12 hours, and believe me I have spent most of my free time setting everything up. Way more than I usually do with it. I don't get it. Maybe my original was a dud.
BTW, this time I sent my wife to the garage on an imaginary errand while I commited to the $199.
I have no illusions though. When our next AT&T bill is double the usual amount, that's when she'll get wise. But that gives me over a month to find a good place to hide. I can see the look on her face when I say "but this one's really fast!"

Wanted to check for memory card and any other color change water damage stickers inside--there is one. ---------I am also going to take vid of the strength of the screen. Ima try to scratch the hell out of it, and see what it takes to break/crack the screen as well , interested in seeing how durable it is. Update later -

phone isn't ruined water does not damage the phone, only if there was chlorine in the water like a pool. Only thing that can get damaged by the water is the LED bulbs and a new LCD display will be needed at most that's worst case scenario. I fix water damaged phones all the time. Stick it in a bowl of dry rise for a few days that some times help.
@ celltimemb. I didnt know bout the LED fix. Good to know. BUT- I didnt drop it in then pull it out. A kiddie put it there and i found it there later. Put the cell on calcium chloride (Damp-rid) I use this to pull moisture out of many things. Didnt help so i figured pay the deductible and play with the remains. --Yeah i'll do a tear-down vid before the screen test. I had it apart already-I will have s/o record me this wknd.
I think you should re-enact the toilet scene too.

I was under the impression youd have to get lucky there wasnt much current going through for the water damage to be survivable. ((i.e if youre in the middle of web surfing when it takes a dip its likely a goner))
I'm curious too. Does it depend on the phone also? I have friends who dropped their *phones in and it wouldn't work anymore. Probably a Apple thing though.

I have (in the past 15 years or so) revive quite a few cell phones after water damage. What I usually do is to remove the battery immediately and start drying the device completely using air conditioner and hair dryer. Corrosion will kill the mainboard so when I have a driver handy, I open up the case and dip it in a bowl of rice, too.
I don't think we can revive batteries after fully soaked in water, though.
The worst case was when my friend went ocean swimming with his iphone in his pocket. We did everything but it didn't come back. But when he replaced his battery a few days later, the phone came back on.
Doing the screen test, any ideas on what to use and ways to scratch it? I have some ideas. I have the shatter/crack test figured out already.

other than keys n change you could try rubbing sand between the screen and a credit card.
Any updates on this? Kinda wanted to see how tough the screen is. A tear down guide would probably be useful as well.

VZW is sending me a new Thunderbolt because of a small audio issue I was having with my phone. They told me on the phone if they detect water damage on my old Thunderbolt once they get it back, then I will be charged full retail.
Obviously I do not want that to happen.....thing is, I spilled part of a beer on my phone about 3 weeks ago. Immediately after it happened I took out battery and wiped the whole phone down.
It has worked fine since then besides the very small audio issue I recently started to have but this was just barely a week ago....I would think if it was cause of the liquid damage that that would've happened earlier.....
Anyway, is there any way they can tell if it has had water damage besides the battery sticker (Because I am sending them back the bare phone, no battery, no cover, no sd, no sim--just the phone)? How are they going to check? Should I do the rice trick just to be safe?

As far as corrosion, wouldn't I notice my phone not working properly? Cause like I said, ever since the spill it seems to be working just fine....

There is a sticker on the phone itself. It is on the back right side of the phone near the top. Kind of hard to see, but rest assure Verizon knows it's there. If you have insurance, now would be the time to use it.

Underneath the battery, correct? What should the sticker look like when its dry and what should it look like when it has had liquid damage?
If they take apart the phone (or even just remove the back housing) then it will be very easy to see liquid damage, if any exists. I just replaced the screen on a thunderbolt a couple days ago, very easy to remove the back and take a look. If you want to check yourself, just get a torx 6 screwdriver, a thin flat head or knife to remove the "void" sticker and take a look for yourself before you find yourself on the receiving end of a $600 bill. Check YouTube for a video on taking it apart, it's very easy though.
How does Verizon check though? What are they going to look for?
Corrosion, internal liquid indicators. I don't think the T'bolt has any internal stickers, but some phones do.

OK I do not see the sticker you are talking about....snapped a few pics with my work camera, what do you think:
It's on the side of the phone. You'll have to tilt the phone to see it. It's white with red spots on it. If it got wet, its completely red. That will be the first thing they look for.

I stared at my phone for nearly 15 minutes and cannot find any stickers that are white, red or white and red. I don't see anything. I got my Thunderbolt on launch day (3/17/11). Is it possible the launch day Thunderbolts are different somehow?

Well, mine has a sticker there. Perhaps yours didn't come with one, or fell off at some point, but after looking a bit closer to your picture, I don't see one either.
Either way, specially since it was beer, they will be able to tell if anything got in there. Rice won't get beer out, it'll be sticky either way.
I personally wouldn't take the chance.
If you have insurance, now would be a good time to use it.

Nothing is sticky at all and the phone works fine. Are they going to completely take the phone apart??
If they suspect anything they will. Did they mention anything about water damage? What was originally wrong with the phone?

A small audio problem that is like teeny rattling I hear when other people call me
There is no sticker on the Thunderbolt, I just talked to Verizon. They go by judging the prongs that the battery hits and if they are corroded, then they charge full retail.
Mine look super gold though and appear to be okay imo......
That's really odd. I had a sticker there... The replacement I just got has one in the sale place too... Of course the Verizon rep didn't even know what a bootloader was... Go figure...

You probably just damaged the earpiece speaker, which is pretty simple to replace and would only cost a few bucks. I can't say for sure, but I imagine the earpiece speaker is the same one that's in the EVO 4G or HD2.
The phones do have stickers, it is located right next to the two gold prongs on the upper right corner of the phone.
If your that worried about a full charge for the phone and since this issue may be related to the beer spilling on it, just use your insurance and pay the $99 deductible. Its better then getting hit with $600 charge.
Sometimes when liquids are spilled on a phone, it could take a little time for it to affect a phone.

It's mainly working, but gets warm and eats battery violently. Has anyone had any luck with the rubbing alcohol bath trick on one of these? I'm not sure how they may react. Some things are getting a bit more sensitive these days.
Side note... If anyone has a main-board laying around from an old busted phone or anything, let me know. She's not pleasant when she's disconnected from the facebook world. The sooner I get this done, the sooner my ear stops bleeding.

Put it in a bowl of rice with the bowl sitting on a heating pad set to high for 24-48 hours. Dont power on the phone in this time and make sure the battery is removed. Also ensure that its the phone getting hot and not the battery.

Rubbing alcohol baths and a toothbrush have been common here, followed by compressed air, and finally rice for a day. It almost ALWAYS works, but this one is failing. Maybe I'll just buy a new board. You could always buy a water sensor sticker off ebay and replace the one in your phone that is red then take it into sprint and just say its acting funky and you want it repl........ Wait, thats illegal, dont do that.....

I had a bad experience with some half breed store breaking her old phone and trying to tell me it was water damaged. After fighting city hall and just hearing "water damage", I took it apart myself, and what do you know... NO WATER DAMAGE! The guy tried to pass it off like water broke it when HE actually did. They stood there and told me that since her (previously working) phone was now dead, the only way I was leaving the shop with a working phone was if I bought a new one. I was furious to see it not show any signs of water, and after a few more calls, I took it to a corporate store and let them take it apart. Finally, the previous notes on the account were over-ridden, and retentions sent me out a replacement for 100 dollars. Three days later, I looked at craigs and found 4 of the same phone for 100 bucks (TouchPro2) and decided insurance isn't worth it. I've never looked back, and I can still even now buy a board or a whole photon for less than the insurance charges. Just missed one on ebay for 42 bucks, but tomorrow is a new day with new auction endings.
PS, She uses sprint as a family plan. I use boost on my epic, and now at 35 bucks a month, I've never looked back from leaving sprint. They can keep their BS insurance and false hopes of 4g. They charge her an additional 10 bucks a month for a "4g device", and we've never even been able to see the icon work. A year from now, she can actually upgrade to an LTE phone when the contract runs out, but until that, ....WOW cell phone companies really suck. I don't even think I should post this.
Dropped rezound in the river a couple days ago. Let it dry out for a whole day in rice. Turned it on and there was a little water under the screen but it seems to be just about gone today. Just today though my proximity accelerometer and compass all stoped working. Anyone know anything I can do to fix this? Where are they located on the PCB. I guess Ill be having to get a new phone

You could try and Frankenstein parts from his phone if he is willing to sell it to you for a decent price and you are comfortable in taking apart the phones.

Yea I'm comfortable taking apart phones. Took mine apart last night and saw a bunch of corrosion on the right side of the board. Cleaned it all with 99 percent alcohol. It still doesn't work looks like something must of fried there's a black spot in the LCD back side next to where the digitizer connects. Oh well time for a new phone hopefully this last till then. I was hoping to sell this but probably not any more. Damn zip lock bags

when you took it apart, did you notice white chalk like substance on the board anywhere?
what i would do is put the board in a bowl and submerge the board with 99% alcohol, and only the board, and try shake the board around to get the liquid in all the nooks and crannies. then pull it out, stand it up to drip dry. then try to put it back together.
Just a quick update today I was using my phone and all my sensors came back(compass, accelerometer, light sensor, proximity sensor. Looks like everything is working again lol(dont know for how long but its working!) Didn't think that would happen from water damage. I did take the PCB and clean it with rubbing alcohol a couple of weeks ago. I was about to replace it with a LG g2 but what a disappointment that was with no SD card or removable battery. I might still go with a GS4.

GL w/ the S4 if you do get one... Damn thing is locked down so tight it makes you want to #blameant. If you get it with the recent OTA there is only root atm.
