So my girlfriend dropped her phone in a cup holder with water in it today. Everything works but it's getting hot, and I couldn't get to it in time to pull the battery and disassemble. It's mainly working, but gets warm and eats battery violently. Has anyone had any luck with the rubbing alcohol bath trick on one of these? I'm not sure how they may react. Some things are getting a bit more sensitive these days.
Side note... If anyone has a main-board laying around from an old busted phone or anything, let me know. She's not pleasant when she's disconnected from the facebook world. The sooner I get this done, the sooner my ear stops bleeding.

Put it in a bowl of rice with the bowl sitting on a heating pad set to high for 24-48 hours. Dont power on the phone in this time and make sure the battery is removed. Also ensure that its the phone getting hot and not the battery.

Yeah when my phone went for a swim, I dove in to the pool after it. I think I ripped the battery out of it even before I was fully out of the water. I had to let it sit in rice for two days until I could no longer see water between the glass and LCD.
And even then, I opened it up and scrubbed the motherboard down with a stiff toothbrush and 91% rubbing alcohol, I wouldn't suggest dousing the phone in it, though.

I've taken phones that people could only find by calling it and seeing it light up in a puddle and saved them two days later. The trick was always get the water off and replace it with something pure so iron and zinc deposits can't complete a random circuit. Rubbing alcohol baths and a toothbrush have been common here, followed by compressed air, and finally rice for a day. It almost ALWAYS works, but this one is failing. Maybe I'll just buy a new board. To bad because the phone is still beautiful.

I had a bad experience with some half breed store breaking her old phone and trying to tell me it was water damaged. After fighting city hall and just hearing "water damage", I took it apart myself, and what do you know... NO WATER DAMAGE! The guy tried to pass it off like water broke it when HE actually did. They stood there and told me that since her (previously working) phone was now dead, the only way I was leaving the shop with a working phone was if I bought a new one. I was furious to see it not show any signs of water, and after a few more calls, I took it to a corporate store and let them take it apart. Finally, the previous notes on the account were over-ridden, and retentions sent me out a replacement for 100 dollars. Three days later, I looked at craigs and found 4 of the same phone for 100 bucks (TouchPro2) and decided insurance isn't worth it. I've never looked back, and I can still even now buy a board or a whole photon for less than the insurance charges. Just missed one on ebay for 42 bucks, but tomorrow is a new day with new auction endings.
PS, She uses sprint as a family plan. I use boost on my epic, and now at 35 bucks a month, I've never looked back from leaving sprint. They can keep their BS insurance and false hopes of 4g. They charge her an additional 10 bucks a month for a "4g device", and we've never even been able to see the icon work. A year from now, she can actually upgrade to an LTE phone when the contract runs out, but until that, ....WOW cell phone companies really suck. I don't even think I should post this.

OK folks,
After a night of wine and tequila on a brother birthday, i got to home with my girlfriend. I get quickly to bathroom and my phone fell out of my coat directly on the toilet. When I saw, I took as fast as possible and not turned over, and dry it with a hairdryer, removed the battery and sim/sd card.
Apparently the screen still with some water on it inside. I didnt opened it because it still on warranty (1 month of use), so i'm freaking out, here in brazil I paid $800 (it costs $1200 really, but i got a promotion) and i'm out of money. So if you guys know something to do and if atrix have a protection, please help me.
PS: donation accepted
Like any other phone that gets wet...battery removal is a priority. Then put it in a ziploc bag of dry, uncooked rice for several days. Your warranty is now void since it's been wet, so dis-assembly shouldn't bother you.
you might as well take it apart to let it dry since your warranty does not cover water damage. you can always try to find some water damage stickers on ebay and replace them and try to get the warranty to cover it...
I already removed the battery, of course. I'm thinking of dis-assembly this and try to replace the water damage indicator, but there is no other sticker that motorola can know that i opened it? because opening void the warranty too.
Lesson learned. Don't put a phone in a pocket where gravity can take over and drop.
That being said, I've fixed a couple wet iPhones by putting it in dry uncooked white rice for acouple days.

Rice will usually work. HURRY
Thats not a 'lesson learned'. Every day the first thing i do when get in home is put the cell on its dock, but this time... it happens...
the cellphone is now on white rice uncooked, i'll leave it for some days and will try to call motorola to knows if they can do anything, maybe paying... i know the warranty is on the hell...
i'm just with fear about the water inside the lcd screen... i'll search around an video off dis-assembly of atrix..
My wife dropped hers in the toilet not only is it working fine but the moisture
sensor on the back under the cover is still white.
good thing our phone doesnt have void stickers so we can take it apart how many times we want without worrying, also the lcd is not glued to the digitizer and what not. so if there is water inside you can easily get it out..
kudos to moto.
I have found this: http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Motorola-Atrix-4G-Teardown/4964/1
Someone know at where should i dis-assembly? i think it's very hard to assembly it again after.
Thanks to everyone that are trying to help me, i'll thank every one!
Sorry for double post, edit bnt isn't working here (Opera),
Do someone know where to find the water damage indicator to replace mine? I didn't find it on ebay (or doesnt know how to name it)...
Thanks in advance.
I would like to name this build (if you dont mind)..."Toiletblur"
If you take it apart and let it dry out it should dry out and work again. It happened to another phone I had.

Not quite so............corrosion can build up very quickly, and the only way to get rid of that is to take apart your phone, piece by piece, and very carefully clean out any corrosion deposits. There are guides for this with the iPhone, and other phones, but the Atrix is too new I believe for there to be a comprehensive guide showing what needs to be checked and cleaned. Contacts are one of the first places on which corrosion starts to appear.
Pretty sure there are no void stickers on this phone. Also there's only like 5 or 6 screws to take the whole phone apart. All of which are visible from the back. I stripped mine down as soon as I got it. I don't think there's any moisture sensors either. Maybe on the battery itself? If so just get a new battery

must have missed that one. phone comes apart real nice though. I bought mine broken. well the volume keys were messed up and the battery cover wouldn't go on right. obviously it was dropped. I took it all apart and when i reassembled it was fixed lol. one little thing around the volume keys must have been out of place. saved $200 of retail for it too
I had same experience. I did the white rice for a couple days, then switched to flower drying crystals. After a while the phone started to boot again.
To dry out the lcd, navigation is your friend. Drove for a good twenty minutes with the screen on and noticed that the streeks were disappearing. After another day, phone was like factory again.
Motorola built this phone right.

Specifically in the laundry. I got it out within about a minute, but it was completely submerged and April fresh. I tried the "bag of rice" routine for a few minutes, but I didn't want to wait 24 hours to see if that would work. Found "tear-down" instructional video on youtube. Took it as apart as it would let me (only about 10 screws). Motherboard, camera, power port and some other minor things but that was about it. It was soaked in there. No way rice was going to work. Stood everything on edge, propped up the hair dryer and let it blow for about 1.5 hours (rotating all the parts every few minutes). Put it back together and let my wife turn it on, while I waited in the garage. I couldn't watch. I didn't think I had insurance on it. But, it worked!! Has been perfect for 3 days.
nice bro. Glad it worked out.
Next time( and you know it'll happen again) 90% alcohol. tear it down, dunk the boards, dry in the oven at 125°. Should rewhiten the humidots too.

That's awesome! In the future, and to anyone else with a similar situation...after the phone is dunked in water somehow...immediately disassemble and SOAK in rubbing alcohol for a good minute. Blow dry the pieces for a few minutes until dry, put it back together....Presto. The alcohol absorbs the water,
You should be good to go.

I could have sworn alcohol is used because when it dries, it doesn't leave behind minerals/residue that could short out terminals like water does, which is why it is dunked so that the alcohol replaces the water.
Alcohol dehydrates people and causes hangovers, so maybe absorption really is happening?
Alcohol breaks the surface tension of the water molecules and displaces it. Water is bad because as stated when it dries it leaves minerals and other contaminates that will grow dendrites. Microscopic fingers that will punch throught solder mask on boards and puncture insulation on wires. Deionized water is best, but most people have rubbing alcohol..

Yessir totally safe, provided you allow it to dry completely before applying voltage.
FWIW I work in a clean room, I've dropped my cappy in a lake before and brought it back to life using the aforementioned method. As stated I even got the humidots white again.

UPDATE: I chickened out
I burned one of my two insurance replacements. The phone was still working, but the thought of the Tide and Fabric Softner working on my phones insides was too much. I wrestled with the idea of possibly wasting the $199 deductable, but I knew that if I waited for the thing to die in it's own time, I might end up with a refurb replacement.
Good thing too. It's strange, I got the replacement this morning and it's faster!! The battery has lasted all day! I still have 40% left after 12 hours, and believe me I have spent most of my free time setting everything up. Way more than I usually do with it. I don't get it. Maybe my original was a dud.
BTW, this time I sent my wife to the garage on an imaginary errand while I commited to the $199.
I have no illusions though. When our next AT&T bill is double the usual amount, that's when she'll get wise. But that gives me over a month to find a good place to hide. I can see the look on her face when I say "but this one's really fast!"
That's the dumbest thing I've heard in a long time.

My roommate spilled god only knows what on her Thunderbolt. This is her 4th and they cancelled her warranty so no replacement. She has since moved to AT&T and the iPhone. Gave me this mess and said I can do "whatever" with it. I already took out the 32Gb memory card for my HD2 (WP7) As for the rest of it, I'm not sure what I should do. The phone won't power on at all!
1) Toss it in the garbage after smashing it and running over with my car.
2) Send it away to be checked and an estimate for repair. Has anyone on here had any luck with those places? I would like an android phone to load various roms and help test for developers on here.
3) Try to fix it myself. Currently I've disassembled the entire phone and put in a bag of white rice over a weekend. Reassembled, but not change. Is there a good site with a writeup of how to proceed in this situation.
Put it in rice for a few days. Your chances of saving it go up significantly if you do it immediately after it's wet and even higher if it was off when wet. I can tell you now though if she's already moved it's already dried (it's been a few days at least). If it doesn't turn on now it is a glorified paperweight. It will never turn on again. You can send it off for an estimate but they're going to tell you one thing: totaled. Multiple things on the board would have been shorted as well as some to all peripherals. Parts and labor would be many times more than buying the phone new at retail.
It's not necessarily dead, and using rice is only good if the phone has water (as in pure fresh water) damage only. If it's pool water, salt water, a sugary drink, etc, then a bag of rice is the absolute worse thing you can it your phone in. Get a toothbrush and some 91% or higher alcohol. Take the EMI shields off of the board and clean it as good as you can. Don't forget to clean out the microUSB port as well. Also if you do get some lights when you pug it in, but no picture, then shine a light on it when it,s on and see if you see anything. HTC makes lovely phones, but their LCDs tend to die quite easily when they come in contact with water. If you have no use for it, I would be happy to take it off your hands. I repair phones full time for a living, and I have an extra LCD that I could test on the phone. If it turns out to be fixable, then we can get into details, if not, I can either toss it or send it back to you. Send me a PM if you're interested.
In the future invest $59 in waterproofing the device. You can swim with it or drop it in a fish tank as a conversation piece and it will still function normally.
http://www.liquipel.com/
The battery could be dead. You could see if a friend has one, or bring it to VZ on the off chance you could get a decent tech to help you.
I dropped my phone in a lake, completely submerged and waterlogged. I dried it out over an AC for a day and it booted back up. The screen had some distortions for a while which cleared up over a few days (Still some very minor lingering damage, almost unnoticeable). Actually the only thing that really became a permanent annoyance to me was that the speaker seemed to get damaged and has been slightly muffled ever since.
All that was 6 months ago. This phone has been a tank, it's earned my respect...
I accidentally spilled a small bottle of water near the right pocket, which is where my phone was resting. The water got inside the TPU case, towards the top where power button and headphone jack is, along with the back of the phone around camera and kickstand. I took the case out as quickly as I could and dried the phone. It seems to be working ok, though I am at work and can't really try it out to see if all functions are working. Anyone have any advice? Should I try to go to sprint?

I thought sprints coverage includes water damage. Have to pay the deductible tho. I once dropped my 3D in the toilet. I recovered it quickly and removed the case, and the indicator by the battery did not show up. I thought I was in the clear until about 3wks later and my phone started acting goofy beginning with losing mobile service. Since the indicator still wasn't showing up I took it in and got a replacement phone and didn't have to pay the deductible. I had read that water damage can take up to a couple months to show up.

I would just wait and see if it recovers before getting a new one
For first few minutes, it worked ok, than the screen started to fliker, than it progressively got worse from there. Camera stopped working, than the phone started to vibrate on its own. After rebooting, it died. Now the screen is completely non-responsive, though I can feel the haptic feedback every now and than. I am getting phone calls as the phone rings, but I can't answer it since, well, the screen is not working. I can silence the ring with the power button, but the power button isn't doing anything else.
I can't believe that a freak accident like that with a few drops of water can do this much damage. My phone is in Diztronic TPU case with a screen protector. It was in my pocket when the water spilled, with few drops spilling in my pocket, on top of the phone, went under the phone case and now I have a dead phone
Open your phone open, clean the board with a tooth brush soaked in alcohol. It would be best to bake to the board, I use a hako with a paint can with a whole in the bottom. I have actually heard of people putting their phones a toaster oven, sounds crazy but its more so to get rid of any moisture and reflow any damaged chips.

There is a indicator inside the phone also. But it sounds like they took it in as other problems without thinking water damage, as your visible indicator was fine.
I thought the alcohol tip only worked with lab grade isopropyl alcohol? Basically it bonds with the water then evaporates, but the kind you get at the drug store isn't concentrated enough. I fully admit i could be wrong though.

Find all the silica gel packs you can get, go to a shoe store and take all the packs out of the shoe boxes or go to Home Depot. Then put them all in a bow and put your phone in the middle of it, it's the best way to draw out moisture.
Dude turn your phone off and let it dry for a day. If you keep it on it will most likely short something out.

i would do the rice thing and see what happens after a day.. otherwise if you take it to a sprint store DO NOT say anything about the water damage unless they ask.. You may have gotten lucky and the sticker may have no trace of water..
Damp Rid
Go to the hardware and get a tub of damp rid. Put thr DR in a large tupperware.put the phone in a smaller tupperware and put the open small tupperware into the big tupperware (sealed) for 2 to 3 days. I saved 2 phones this way. . . . Kids.
My wife dropped her OG evo in the bathtub and it was totally done. We pay for the Sprint coverage and they took care of us with no issues whatsoever.
I can verify their warranty definitely covers water damage. That is if the rice trick doesn't work first.
Johnny
My daughter god bless her, was playing with my wifes phone taking pictures when as the title suggest she dropped it it in the pool.
I quickly pulled battery and let the heat of the sun dry it out, last night I finally managed to get some rice and let it sit for maybe 9 or so hours.
Powered up just now, camera works but no actual picture is taken, just a blank screen. I had to fix permissions I had a ton of fc errors.
So you think I should open it up and dry it out and maybe spray it down with compressed air?
It still has basic functions working, like phone data ect, just camera seems borked.

I probably would not use or be very cautious with the compressed air, cause it can easily rip parts off the board.
Just look if there's already a sign of corrosion and try to wipe it off.

The problem actually isn't the water usually. It the rust and corroded contacts points left as that water dries. If its been as long as you say be grateful the phone still works at all. Especially the speakers(the water usually kills them on xontact).
With as many hours as you say have passed the damage is done. You need to put it in dry rice or salt or the little sodium pellets IMMEDIATELY

I don't if the EVO 3D does but other phones have strips inside that change color once it gets wet. So they can tell if the phone has been immersed in water like dropping it in a toilet or pool.
Its usually the first thing they check for under a warranty claim. They check to see if the phone was immersed in water.
Such a thing is usually not covered under warranty.

If you pay for additional insurance you are covered after a fifty to one hundred dollar deductible. Everything is covered..theft,fire,water damage, etc..
If you are under manufacturer warranty only, then you are screwed they will always send the phone back and cite water damage. They only cover manufacturers defects.
Just popping in here, we would use denatured achohol to clean phones, it will evaporate the water from corroding the contacts.
Watch out if you have cuts on your fingers if you try it.

To add to that, a hair dryer or compressed air might actually push water deeper in or, in the hair dryer's case, melt something.

I have not tried this because mercifully I have not dropped phone in the water yet. But years ago when I had instrumentation on high pressure pipelines, sometimes a seal would break and we would wind up with salt water all in the equipment. We would wash it down with distilled water, then to completely evaporate all the water, we would put it in a vacuum chamber. As the air pressure drops, the boiling point of water drops and the water literally boils away. I wonder if one of those space bags you connect to a vacuum cleaner would draw enough to make that work?
Don't know but something to file away for the next water accident.

I took the phone apart, ignored the LDI's, gave that sucker a good alcohol bath, replaced the part malfunctioning like in your case the camera and gave it back to them.
I personally (just me) wouldn't use a blow dryer on anything like this, those parts are sensitive to heat unless you know what you're doing. I'm sure you can find a nice tech and they'll try and fix it for ya or they'll replace it unless you dont have TEP then you're screwed both ways, and for that I'm sorry
Funny I was thinking alcohol as well.
I have the phone apart now, it was super easy and the hotel im in had a nice screw driver set.
I have several sd cards and few new sims i can activate a new one when i get home.
Back in the day when I benched pc's I sprayed the motherboard and gpu with conformal spray ( we have it at work) Wondering if that would stop any corrosion from occurring.
Im not against trying for warranty but its my fault not failure so I would be upfront and see what if anything they would do. I have 3 lines and 7 year customer, maybe that will mean something.
Thanks for all the advice and suggestions, very much appreciated
Sorry to be off topic but it is sorta still on topic.. ill explain...
I got a macbook pro from someone the other day. They spilled milk on it and the keyboard doesnt work. I was gonna get some denatured alcohol and clean it but ive never done it. How would this be done? Do you actually just sit the board in it for a couple hours or do you just wipe it down with something, if so, what? Im also wondering this just in case i need to do this to any other electronic, like my 3d. Thanks for any help guys.

I use denatured alcohol with qtips or kimwipes which is lint free wipes.if you use qtips make sure you aren't leaving lint behind.also for any litmus papers which have been set off I will tell you bleach works magic
