Follow instructions in ChainFire's post to root the SGS2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399. I bought my phone last night and rooted it immediately.

ok, i will now try the other guide, but I have one problem:
I have procceeded these stages:
- Download the attached ODIN file and extract the .zip file
- Download the attached XWKDD, but do NOT extract the .tar file
- Download and extract SuperOneClick (Some say you should not be using the very latest version 1.9, but 1.5 or so)
- If you do not have Samsung's KIES 2.0 installed, download and install it. You need it to install the correct USB drivers, so the programs can communicate with the device. Reboot your computer after installation of KIES.
- Make sure your device is in USB debugging mode: Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging
- Reboot your device into download mode: Turn the device off, then power it on again by pressing and holding VolumeDown + Home + Power simultaneously. You will know when you are in download mode, it is really obvious
- Start ODIN
- Connect the device to your computer using USB
- Wait a few seconds, the ODIN screen should show you that a device is now connected
- Make sure that in ODIN NOTHING is checked, except the "Auto reboot" and "F. Reset Time" checkboxes. Press the "PDA" button, and select the "XWKDD_insecure.tar" file.
- Press "Start". ODIN you should now be flashing the kernel, and the device should reboot.
how can i reset them?

how can i reset them?

Not sure if this helps... But Ive got very same log from Superoneclick after flashing CF root XWKF3 over XWKDD_insecure kernel. I already had root in KDD, maybe thats why.

Once more then .
Flash stock firmware via Odin i suggest KF2 .
Once phone has booted up follow instructions as posted Chainfires CWM and root .

[Q] Odin doesn't detect Galaxy S2 in downloading mode and...

I have searched forums for this but haven't found a real solution, so can you guys help me out please? Odin doesn't detect my phone (i think this happened after my friend put the "Speedmod" kernel on) and also i can't flash from recovery, that's the 2nd problem.
About phone:
Android version: 2.3.4
Baseband version: I9100XXKG1
Kernel version: 2 6 35 7 hardcore speedmod #s2-k1-t8-300hz
Build number: GINGERBREAD XXKG1
I'm new to sgs2 from DHD, would you need usb debugging enabled to connect?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
I have USB debugging enabled in Development section. I forgot to say - i can't flash from recovery because i get this message in recovery mode:
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Can i now resolve this somehow? (and mostly the Odin not detecting it). Or put stock kernel back? I would like to then flash new mod - one with BLN.
Ah, you haven't flashed the ZImage from your rooted kernel, that's why signature related error is there.
Regards.
Thank you very much i will search and do this for verification issue. What about Odin not detecting it? Isn't that a bigger issue?

Can you connect your phone to Kies? If not, then drivers are not installed. And make sure that you are pressing the Vol Up in download mode to continue
I installed USB drivers again yesterday. Also, prior to Speedmod Odin did detect the phone in download mode. Maybe there lies the problem?
I can't connect to Kies and i installed drivers right from the start and then again yesterday.
Unplug, disable usb debugging, reconnect to pc, run kies
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Have you tried diffrent USB exits on your computer? And make sure that kies not running when you start up Odin.
Ok, it now connects to Kies. I think There's a GT-I9100 text in the upper left corner. 3 minutes ago it was still "connecting ad infinitum". So i suppose it is connected now. Next step is to just download the latest firmware and flash it? Just to be sure, this won't brick the phone, because it is already rooted. I also made a backup with Titanium.
You can also do a nandroidbackup in CWM. Just go to back up and restore.
Did the backup in CWM (it said backup from 19 days ago, it was still connecting with Odin back then). It ran through the "yellow text", then i picked Reboot...
back in the system the About is still the same config, same kernel etc. I've put it into download mode, exited Kies ofcourse, ran Odin - and still nothing. Like the phone is not there.
Ok maybe i don't need Odin, for now, maybe i can do it (flash kernels, roms) through ROM Manager, but i do need to get rid of the E: failed to verify whole signature, otherwise i can't even chose "update.zip" (well i can choose it but it just stops midway - or 1/3way through)
Jesus guys sorry this is a lot for me...
Can you tell me please step by step how to:
first flash new firmware, kernel? Latest firmare or kernel? So i get into the mode where Odin will work again hopefully...
Are sure that kies not running? Because Odin doesn`t like kies. Go to your taskmanager at your computer and check if there are some kies stuff that running.
I checked again, Kies ain't running. The strange thins is, before flashing with speedmod kernel, when in download mode, the phone was found in Odin, but not after that - i have speedmod kernel for 10 days lets say, and yesterday i tried Odin and it just doesn't work (anymore)
Should i flash the ZImage through recovery mode? So that i can then flash new kernel with recovery mode? If that's how it goes at all. Or is recovery mode just for ROMS?
(ROMs, kernels, firmwares - ayayayay...)
I think you flash kernels, radio etc thru Odin and rom:s thru recovery.
There's a message i got when i download mode, the tray shows a USB icon and i click it and it says: USB Device Not Recognized
- USB Root Hub (10 ports)
- Unused Port
- Generic USB Hub (3 ports)
- Unknown Device
- USB Composite Device
- USB Composite Device
- Unused Port
- Unused Port
- etc...
and "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it."
Come on phone, show me some life :/

My guess is that on the first page it says this method is now obsolete and points you to this page .

[Q] Download mode first time starts a download. Normal?

When i first got my phone back from repair i wanted to use download mode to put the CWM in and flash it. But when i first did it it started a download process is it normal?
2.3.6
What download process exactly?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
In the middle
" Downloading ....
Do not turn off target"
It has some writing on the top left too would you like to know what it says?
nothing is downlading...it by default shows like that...when you start download from ODIN you can see the WRITING PROCESS TIMELINE under that logo
Could you please elaborate how do you put the CWM in while on the Download mode
Yep, as above. That is download mode. Now your try to connect to Odin (kill lies first). Edit: kies not lies (stupid Swype)

Oh Im just following these instructions.
- Unzip the attached CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.zip
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start ODIN
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar
- Put your phone in download mode
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure repartition is NOT checked
- Click the START button
- Wait for the phone to reboot
Im sorry its just my first time doing anything like this xD
yes instruction is correct,
Make sure dirvers are installed, Kies to be killed,
once you connected the phone to PC (connect to mother board USB socket backside)
the ID:COM box will be highlighted in yellow, and in the message box you can see "added"
Good luck...
Do you kill kies first then go into download mode?

Odin must identify your phone first like said above..
uninstall the Kies, download the latest version from Samsung install after a PC reboot, after install reboot PC, (kill means not unistall, close the applicaion, also check in your system tray)

if you have successfully flashed correct CF-root from ODIN, thats it, next is your duty to google for rooted applications.....
@ UpInTheAir : for my knowledge if I am not correct,
Download mod itself is a debugging mode, not essenstial to do it from Menu...
the people who did not enable the debugging mod and bricked the phone or stuck on boot logo have been flashing ROMs by enterin into download mod without any treble...
@ZACQ8
Thanks i installed a custom rom now and its working fine and dandy.
One last question. Could you point me to where i can find how to check flash counter and reset it? and re flashing stock roms increase flash counter? or really how do i get everything ready so i can return my phone to repair if the time calls?

SGS2 got bircked after trying to root!

hello,
I just got SGS2 (I9100 model), it had costumed operator rom, which I wanted to root.
The android version was 2.X.X, and the kernel name was something with "KG2",
* so I downloaded the right CF-ROOT (CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG2-v4.1-CWM4, also tried with CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KG2-v4.1-CWM4)
* entered it to "PDA" section in ODIN 1.85
* entered to "Download Mode" in the phone
* clicked "Start" in Odin.
Odin successfully finished running (it took 42 sec), and the phone rebooted but got stuck on the "Galaxy S II logo" with a warning triangle.
I'm so upset right now. how to revert what i did?

If you can get into download mode use CheckFus to get your latest stock firmware and flash it with Odin. Then write down the firmware version and search for the corresponding CF-Root kernel as you already did for your old firmware.

I'll try the "FIX THE UNFLASHABLE GSII" guide tomorrow and update you.
right now I cant do nothing because the battery is empty and no matter what I cant load it. why it's happening?
some symptoms:
* I can't even got to download mode, it's says that the battery is low. even if the phone connected to the computer
* the computer doesn't recognize the phone, but when it's connected there's a big empty battery pic on the galaxy.
btw, I really think that my windows drivers/usb ports screw me over. (for example kies never recognized my phone and I had other problems with the usb, sometimes it recognized the phone, sometimes not.)

Things to try to charge the battery:
1. remove battery from device for some minutes
2. reinstall battery, connect AC wall charger and watch what happens on the screen
3. charge for at least 3 hours without doing anything else with the device (let it charge even if it does not look like the device is charging)
When the battery is charged:
1. check if entering download mode works again
2. if download mode does not work try with a JIG
When download mode works:
1. uninstall Kies
2. install USB drivers only from here
3. use stock USB cable
4. check if ODIN can connect to device
5. if 1-4 does not work try ODIN from another PC
If all works well, restart by flashing the latest stock firmware for your phone.

How to find the latest stock firmware for my phone?
...
MistahBungle said:
If you can't get into download mode, that's probably a moot point. But, assuming you have and I9100/I9100T, look here, Samfirmware or use the PC version of Checkfus to download the latest stock firmware for your phone model/country/and carrier if you want a carrier branded firmware (you can also often get unbranded country specific firmwares with Checkfus if they are available for your country).

When I''ll get a new battery and hopefully get into download mode, should I just burn this firmware with ODIN? I don't need to root the phone first?
(the original fw was not-rooted)
...
Problem Solved!
in a very simple way, just tried from another computer and stock usb cable.
I flashed original branded Rom and it's just worked.
problem probably was one of those:
* bad windows drivers
* bad usb cable (not likely)
* some other **** got wrong with windows
thank you all

You can download all the drivers from the useful guide by @brijeshep. Head to the "How to install Stock Firmware?" part of the guide to access all the necessary parts of the download. Here is the link,

Why to install many times kies, doesn't required
As i see that your device is not recognised by the drivers ,
So now download PDA net drivers (search it on google )
After downloading and installing
Just connect your device to your PC and wait for a min to detect ( you ll get to see in Task Bar right corner icon)
Then Open Odin and try the rest.

Before getting brick , your usb socket was working fine ?
Your PC was detecting your device ?
Better to give your device to service center .

Ok so you now your on Stock Rom , so just now get into recovery > flash CWM > and take Backup
Then reboot your phone, after again get into recovery mod (e3 red one ) and do wipe data/cache then Reboot your device , After doing all , then flash custom Rom which ever you wanted.
