[Q] Emergency Call Only Syndrome - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Received my SGS2 on 29th June and ever since it start having emergency call syndrome (out of blue not receiving any network signal).only after reset, it regain signal and same story goes on till date.
To overcome this prob,i tried these:
- factory reset 3 times
- manually choose telco/network carrier
- update/flash firmware (stock XWKF1 -> XWKF3)
so for these only reduce problem's rate to occur.PLease, help anyone?

Is your sim card active ?

Hi
I have the same problem as yours (i thought i am the only one having this)...out of the blue the phone changes to the emergency calls Only status....
it is very annoying specially when you are expecting an important phone call and you discover that the phone cannot receive calls
it became a habit of mine to keep checking my phone every once and a while, and when spotted i restart my phone and this brings the phone back to normal (Normal for a day or two of course).
Can anybody help with this?
SGS2 GT-I9100, Android: 2.3.3, Build: JHKG2

First of all I would download a newer firmware. If that doesn't fix it you should probably just return it to Samsung for replacement/repair.

Actually i have flashed this Israeli ROM (it is an Orange official but leaked ROM) about a month or so and it supports Arabic, English & Russian (exactly what i need) that i have no complains about so far except this emergency Calls issue and i am not so fund of rooting etc so i don't know where i can find another ROM (official not cooked ) that have the same languages supported.

What is your signal strength when it changes to emergency only? Mine does that during very weak signal, I found it's because it can only receive GPRS singal which is from another carrier when my own (HSPA) can't establish connection.

frankly i didn't check or notice such thing, but the moment i installed my latest ROM (GB/JHKG2) i have noticed that the signal strength is very week especially indoors.
thinking off and analyzing this situation i have a confident opinion that the problem i am facing is related to the ROM i am using (GB/JHKG2).
i am thinking of flashing a different Kernel to this ROM and see what will happen

When you installed a different rom did you flash back to your original telcos baseband? This makes an enormous difference to signal strength.

[HELP] Random loss of networks

Hi there,
Since a few days, I've got a serious problem with my SGS2, it randomly loss any networks, saying that the flight mode is on. I tried to flash with another firmware ( stock KE7) it change nothing.
Any idea?
This is a firmware issue with the modem. Mine did the same thing. KE7 modem is horrible. I flashed to KF2 modem and I don't have this problem anymore.

i believe this is related to the network itself. for my 2 other phones before, whenever i am AUTO network Mode, many callers used to call me reporting 'My mobile was off'... also with S2 the same issue.
i switched to GSM mode only, LOSING my NETWORK Data SPEED, for this ..
i hope future firmware can solve this with as suggested above, Good RADIOS....
The problem is that i've already tested with another provider's simcard and i've got the same issue. I tried with some firmware (stock KE2, KE7, KF1, Litening 1.4) but it change nothing. I'm from france with 'Virgin" provider if this can help.

up to now, going to GSM Mode solves this issue but i loose "fast speed network"
I tried GSM Mode only but the issue is still the same.
Actually i'm on:

The title on this thread doesnt say which kind of network you are talking about.
Data network and phone, wifi network works perfectly.

I'm on Orange UK and that happens to me quite often. It's something to do with the network and how it handles the switch from gsm to udma(I think, anyway). Sometimes the network doesn't fully recognize you've switched from one type to the other and reports your phone to be offline. It doesn't usually last long but if someone tries to call me during that time then I'll get a text message when the network catches up to tell me I've missed a call.

I don't think the problem can be fixed on the user end. I had the same issues with a Nokia N80 and N97 mini before I switched to the SGS2. It's apparently a common problem that all networks sometimes have and the only way it'll ever really be fixed is if the networks improve how they handle the switch.
I think it also depends on where you live. If you get a constantly good 3G/H signal then in theory the phone should hardly ever need to switch to GSM mode, but if you live in an area where the signal is not so strong then it might switch more often which will cause the problem to be more severe.
You could of course try setting the phone to WCDMA only which will give you good speeds, but then if you drop out of 3G range you'll lose the ability to make & receive calls anyway. It unfortunately seems like a lose/lose situation.
As for the flight mode issue, I really have no clue what is causing that. Have you tried hard resetting and/or flashing new firmware?

Change your phone..
I had the same problem on my first SGS2..everytime when gsm/wcdma auto is selected..phone randomly looses internet connection and radio switches off. In gsm only mode..everything is fine. Got my second SGS2 and phone is perfect..no loss of data connection even in the worst coverage area..
You can read "serious issue on 3g" thread in the general forum and see if you are suffering same symptoms

You need to ask the network if they are having problems .
Have you checked /remade your network settings ??
Could be a rom problem a modem problem a sim card problem or even a CSC problem with wrong settings .
Check settings clean sim card that does not help put your phone back to a warranty state flash stock rom and clear rom counter . Test if faulty take to a service centre .

Im on 3 also i have had a few times the same problem mate, lets say maybe 4 or 5 times, it usually happens if i lose my internet connection it still shows me having signal but cant make a call or sms. i got no answer from 3 either
Check the status screen. I get this and when it happens where it should say T-Mobile it says Emergency Calls Only. I figured my SIM card was at fault so wedged some paper behind it to hold it in place and the problem has almost completely stopped.

Are you guys running an I-9100T from 3? All modems from any rom you install won't work with the T. You'll need your stock KF4 modem.

I had a similar problem. Read more about it here:

tried going back to kf4 still no luck its only in certain places in me house where it does it everywhere else i have 1 or 2 or none at all bars of signal
3 customer service rang me up told them i wanted cancel the contract bcus of it. they knocked the contract price down from £30 to £25.75 for the text 500 plan with them. bit annoyed that i can only get signal in certain places of me house but cant argue on the price as well as gettin the phone for free
because 3 dont have a 2g network in the UK so if you dont have 3g coverage it will show a network signal but you cant make calls or sms
I'm having the same problem but with o2. I lose signal regularly at home as I live on the perimeter, but when I get signal bars back againwhen i go into town, it tells me that the network is unavailable. I have to switch off and on again to re register and then it works fine again until the next time the signal is dropped... It's annoying in the morning because i can wake up and see full signal on the phone all morning, but people are trying to contact me and not getting through because in reality, the network is not connected! I'm sure o2 have a 2g network, so I would presume it's a phone issue...
Hi all,
I live in France using SFR network and I get the same issue here using KI3 but I had the same problem with KH3.
the behavior on the phone is network seems to be good everytime/everywhere but sometimes people who try to reach me go directly to my voicemail and I receive sms with some delays.
When network works again, I mean I don't see it but I know it because I receive a couple of sms at the same time and a call from my voicemail
it means that my phone seems to be connected to the gsm network but is not, It loose the gsm network...
If you can give me your experience.
thx
I've got the same issue. (tacticman), I'm also on SFR network, i had this since KH3, never before. Now i'm on KI3, it's still here.
I always use CF-Root kernel, i tried to wipe, restore old backups, it does not change anything. I also tried GS II repair tools, nothing too...
The only thing I found to solve (temporarly) the problem, switch to offline mode (mode Hors ligne in FR) and then disable it.
But the problem occurs very often, it's very disturbing.
My IMEI number is still here.

Continuous no signal. Please help.

Hi,
Someone please help me.
I get unregistered by the network (Vodafone, Pune) everytime. When I need to call, I can manually select the network & for the time of the call, the network remains. But as soon as I keep my phone idle, it loses signal strength and finally there's so signal at all!
The series of events leading to this:
1. I was on CM9 Stable when I went to Germany.
2. Then I downloaded DiliDroid ROM and flashed it in Germany (was using an O2 local Germany sim card when I flashed)
3. Then I came back to India & as I lost my old Vodafone SIM in Germany, applied for a duplicate card & got it.
4. Then a couple of days went okay. Then suddenly everyone started to complain that I'm unreachable on my phone.
5. I flashed new modems (tried KI4 etc.). Did a full wipe, flashed CM10 JB but the problem remained.
Then I flashed official Stock or Nordic countries and finally I flashed official Indian Stock ROM.
And everytime I did a full wipe and installed. I also changed my CSC to INU (just in case that was conflicting)
I've also inserted a different SIM card on my phone and it's still the same. So it's not a SIM problem.
Currently I'm on DDLPA modem (that comes with official Indian stock ROM)
Please guide me. What should I do.
Apn?

I suppose it's the modem. Don't judge a modem after some hours of usage, a modem needs 2/3 days to settle.
I had the same issue some months ago. Firstly I changed my baseband with one matching my network operator but still the problem remained. After trying the KI3, KI4, LPX, I found out that KH3 was the best for me.

Yes modem start working in 5 seconds but needs at least 50 hrs to settle because u move here and there....in this time modem studying your signal strength etc etc and after some time of usage it gives u better result accordingly to your need

I can't agree with you. Signal strength depends on distance between you and the cellular network transmitter and its power. Signal is signal.

[Q] Galaxy pocket (GT-S5300) data connection

Hi
My Galaxy pocket is loosing it's data connection and only reboot is helping although the dual arrow marks with H exsist on screen
the rom is original without any changes
is it knwon problem or should I ask to replace my phone (it is one week old and the problem is since day 1)?
Dude its common with everybody but it happens if u use H sparsely but wen u use consistently it will be history. No fear atall

Had severe problems with drops of network connectivity, the phone even going to "No network" at times or the data arrows would freeze until reboot. It was especially severe in 3G network mode.
Latest firmware available by just doing an over the air software update of the phone has a new baseband software (XXLJ4), which indeed seems to have solved this annoying problem. The update information said something like "increased phone stability" - sounds about right if they bugfixed the radio firmware..

Settings -> About Phone -> Software Update -> Update
and then choose to check for updates, and let the phone do its work.
That should do the trick unless your phone is already on XXLJ4 or is specifically/regionally branded or something.
You can see the version code directly under About phone, Baseband version. My phone read XXLF5 there before it was updated.
The latest baseband for this one, S5300XXME1, available since a month in the updates, makes it even better.
For me it got rid of a frequent WiFi problem and 3G disconnects which could happen when not stationary.
Also it seems to keep a 3G connection much more persistently before switching over to 2G/EDGE, the 3G signal now really needs to be terrible for it to do that.

[Q] Phone Calls do not connect

Hi All,
I've been a visitor to XDA for couple years now and greatly appreciate the people who post here who have helped me to custom my Galaxy SI, SII & SIII with generally no issues. I've had my SIII for about a year and a half now running CWM & CF root with either Darky's ROM or a Nightly build of Cyanogen Mod.
Since moving to a new house (few weeks ago) the signal on my handset drops as I make/receive calls. I assumed initially it was just the signal in the area and as I had been running a non-stable build I flashed a full release to be certain. I chose Delta ROM initially but have since flashed Darky's, Delta (again), Cyanogenmod (Nightly, stable, unofficial 11), multiple different Modems when running CM (area specific, model specific & the emergency one for EFSv2) and followed the guide to reset to stock (unroot, official recovery, reset counter & stock ROM) none of which has helped.
To be specific, I can use the Wi-Fi, 3G, send texts and use apps which use 3G to send texts (MightText); which to me (Novice at this stuff) seems to indicate that the 2G & 3G functions of the phone work. Yet still as I make a call, or receive one, I do not hear ringing, person speaking or any form of buzzing; this applies if I use the phone as normal, the speaker phone or a handsfree set.
Roughly 30 seconds into the call the network drops (signal bars go empty), the phone call displays 'Out of Network Area' or some such, the call ends and the phone returns to the home screen where roughly a minute later the network reconnects and I can use 3G again, send texts etc. as above, except still cannot make calls.
I don't know if it has any bearings but on Cyanogenmod the time before the network drops is around the 45-60 seconds mark, all other ROMs disconnect at around the 30 second mark and my GF has an S4, on O2 as well, and the signal on her phone has been temperamental lately, but has not shown the same problem, she is running Stock firmware without root etc.
If I had to replace a component instead of sending off to service centre, how difficult would that be?
Thank you in advanced,
Martin
If it still has the same issue with full stock rom then it's hardware, motherboard/antenna etc. Unless you often dismantle and successfully reassemble mobile phones it isn't recommended to try yourself.
Samsung give two year limited warranty, worth trying with service centre after resetting counter.

Yeee I had a look around alot of forums for similar issues but could only find posts where there was no signal at all or playing up due to modem etc.
In desperation I opened dialogue with an O2 Guru who said hardware, but just seemed very coincidental to have happened when we moved =/
Thank you for confirming though worth a shot!
Martin
You moved so you may not have the same signal strength .
You need to work out if it is the network or the phone .
Try another phone in your location with your sim .
Test your phone next to an O2 mast .
Wipe phone flash stock rom for your network and test .

The O2 Guru I spoke with said the signal at my home address should be OK, my GF has an S4 on O2 and although a bit crackly, her phone functions works and I have my SIM in a temp phone, a Galaxy Ace, which has also been working fine in the area.
It's a good idea to test closer to a mast, I don't know where the nearest one is to be honest, is there anywhere I can find this out?
My phone is currently flashed back to stock, that's recovery, ROM, counter, modem (I believe) etc. followed this guide to do so:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2323847
What boggles me is that the phone is able to send texts, use 3g and search for different networks to 'register' etc. but the phone call disconnects. I would have thought that the same component which connects to network to send texts would connect to make calls? Is it possible that where I am in a weak signal area, the phone has damaged the component by increasing the gain by too much/for too long? If so is that because there was custom software or would the settings for this component be the same as stock?
Bit concerned about sending it off and the possible questions/costs associated with this sort of thing. This is the first time I've had a phone which has a hardware fault, all the other times a phone has played up its usually due to the software which can be flashed using any number of methods found on this site.
What a frustration, sorry to ask so many questions, just at a bit of a loss as to what to do with it now!
Thanks,
Martin
In a weak signal area your phone has to output 10x the signal strength to maintain voice call, which it probably didn't have to before. Data and text use much less power, hence why they still work. To test just find somewhere with full bars strength, maximum ASU value in settings, about, status.
It sounds like a high resistance gap somewhere, it gets hotter during use until it breaks the connection - then cools to join again.
Just make sure you describe the fault correctly and it should be repaired.
