How do themes work? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was just curious if anybody could point me to any information regarding how to start *making* themes. Like how they're assembled...it seems to just be a bunch of media, but what exactly, I don't see a manifest or anything in there that directs what to go where. Also trying to figure out what's in the APK's? Anybody have any input here? A link? Some knowledge? A simple theme to tear apart (and/or how to do it)?
I'm not much of an artist, I'm just trying to figure out how this stuff works, nobody wants to tell anybody anything, it seems, I don't get why .
Also, how does the theme tie into the framework at all? I'm assuming this is the framework/SDK version? Like they're typically just icons or pictures and the like, no?
Thanks in advance, guys .

No manifest? Have you ever unzipped a theme?
I would do a lot of reading. But since it is in a sticky... Im def not going to link you.
The apks contain the modified images and xml's.
Oh and this is a question. This goes in the q&a section.

Yes, this is the 3rd one I opened, I don't see anything like a manifest document. Some have the installation script, but that's just boiler plate stuff regarding installation, the rest is just a .JAR or .APK - both of which are most commonly used for compiled code.
I apologize for asking this in this forum, I keep forgetting that this isn't a forum dedicated to android dev, but only postings of android dev, not questions. My mistake. I ask that an admin move this to the Q&A section.
I didn't see nor do I see any stickies here regarding theme structure .
I'll report my post now.

Try the themes board? There was a guide there last I checked.

Thx, and I do want to give back and help the community. It's what I like doing. Unfortunately I'm not getting much headway in the realm of Kernel or ROM work, but I'm sure eventually I'll find something.
People get antsy when the rules aren't followed, which is understandable. I just keep forgetting the dev section isn't a place for Q&A - blah. 2nd time this happened - this will very hopefully be the last, though >.<.

Why do people keep asking what the status is on the Touch Pro 2? Check the threads!

I am putting this up in favor of the devs. I am not a dev myself, but I certainly respect what they are doing! What I can't stand are the people who keep asking dumb questions, like: when will this be fully working? Or: What is the status of android on touch pro 2? Look at the threads! If you took the time to look, you would know that there is still work to be done. Again, thank you devs!

Noobs will be noobs and there will never be a shortage of them lol, not much you can do about it. That's what I've learned with forums.
Noobs will be Noobs is right. I actually think the status updates have been very frequent and easy to navigate. (even for people like me that haven't been around much lately! :O )

Pretty sure a guide like that should be stickied with the rest of those threads at the top... that would be veryy helpful. I would be very confused too coming into the android threads for the first time.

Maybe at the "download your files here" section, say that the users don't necesarily need to know how those files work and what exactly they do, just that they are needed parts for android to work. Just trying to think if I was a beginner and what might confuse or overwhelm me. Just a suggestion but it probably wouldn't make a difference. Other than that I just wonder who needs to be told in order to get this thing stickied. This is kind of the equivelant of the thread in the WinMo section on flashing ROMs for noobs.

Looking for help with cm7

I have a bootable cm7 port, and I need a experienced porter/kernel dev to take it over or help me get working. Right now there is no usb, sound or network. So please pm me for the download link. We need to get cm7 up and running.
its already in the works.
Just leave it alone and let the devs get it working.
So do you have touch input working? As far as I know none of the others have that working.
You might want to post it up with the download link in the dev section. You might also want to pm some of the dev's making senseless roms they have been taking out sense stuff and adding aosp stuff lately, so they might know what needs to be in there to make it work.

Dude what do you think the development section is for? Maybe developing a rom possibly? Look at the op's join date 2007, I highly doubt he is noob, which would make me assume this is a real trying to recruit people to work on this.
Also it is better to have more people working on something than just one. If only one person had worked on our root we might still only have temp root now. revolutionary didn't just stop because they heard somebody else was working on root.

Why are you knocking him for trying it on his own? Every Dev has to start somewhere. If he wants to attempt to learn, people should be encouraging him not telling him to leave it alone for the "real" devs. When I ported clockwork recovery to the dell streak 7 I knew nothing about Linux or android development , but the community helped me learn the ropes and encouraged me to get it done, Not discouraged me telling me to leave it alone and wait for a more experienced Dev to get it working.

Um, so what if somewhat is already working on it? For all we know this guy may be more talented than Toastcfh. Perhaps he can find the solution to something that Toast cannot figure out... Bottom line, Android development is a collaboration and we shouldn't scold people for trying to help, develop, and contribute.

SMH. No wonder we have the worst forum on xda.
i think the OP should keep up the good work. since when was it a rule that a specific dev can work on CM7 and no one else. XDA is supposed to be about helping others when help is needed, not scolding people and trying to break their spirits. all the OP is doing is asking for a little help, and like someone previously stated, he may have found/fixed something that the other devs working on CM7 missed
This forum should just get rid of post counts. People feel the need to talk when they don't have to, leading to a few spamming power users that are dicks/trolls that run the show.
Why do dudes in this forum act the way they do. Makes people not want to ask for help. Dude keep doing what your doing man. Knowledge and Fadakar I'm with you. Knowledge your so right man never seen this going on in the hero forum.

So start looking at performance tweaks and such, and if you are adding some stuff to pre-compiled APKs then look into smali and the tools you need to use to manipulate it.

Oh boy...I just love it when people start saying
"I'm building a ROM", "I'm doing dev work", "I want to be a recognized developer"
Then I make suggestions and I get "That's too hard", "Do you have a download link" "Cn u teac me hw mak a custm kernel?"
Yet they are totally unwilling to actually invest some time into these things and LEARN it.
Guy's Rome wasn't built in a day, and your ROM isn't going to be either. Look around, read, SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH. Download other people's stuff not just to Kang it, rename/re-post it under your name, but to LEARN, to figure out how it works, so you can UNDERSTAND. This isn't like a store, where you walk in and go "I want one of those, and I'll take one of them, and please get me that, where can I find this, etc, etc." Make little modifications, tweaks on top of tweaks, and keep doing that until it's soemthing new, soemthing different, and THEN post it. But please don't limit yourself, to what is "Easy" or "Comfortable", it's not the way to get anywhere with real development work, much less in life. Put some time into it, and some effort. I really do wish you all luck, but you guys have to stop looking for the easy way to get some quick credit.
[/RANT]
@OP I know of zero performance modifications that you can do in XML, and if you are looking to use someone else's work and use that then start searching and make sure you ask before you use it.

Who are you referring it to? I cooked a rom and I think that I have made the rom. Of you don't have anything to help me then please don't comment. I don't understand smali but I know how to read tutorials and add more features in the rom by smali editing like swipe to remove, 14 toggle etc.

He was being helpful, he is bringing up a attitude that is rampant here on XDA, namely the "cooking" of ROMs. There are WAY too many people who just cook a ROM in a kitchen and claim to have "developed" it. No, you just re-packaged somebody's work, it's not the same thing. I'm not saying it's useless, but it causes way to many "developer" wanna-be's that just aren't interested in actually learning something. Up above we posted suggestions and you responded with

That creates the impression that you aren't wanting to try any other methods for creating ROMs. If you were trying to say that you don't know smali, then maybe you should have said something like,

This is very true, I'm new to porting and I'm starting with porting so I can learn the ins and outs of a rom so at a later time I can learn to develop, even in porting I've had to back smali and make some edits to get things working so sooner or later you will have to as well.. I'm currently reading a begginers guide on java for android.. Google is my best friend and I'm trying to learn as much as I can because I have an idea of my 'ideal' rom.. I can't wait for someone else to do it so I can port it and I know it will never be the way I want.. I'm doing it mainly for myself and I hope one day I can share with others

Best thing to do is get on the good side of a dev and ask them to teach you, I had great help from some of the best devs on XDA, but as above its not something you can just learn easily, I already had a pretty good knowledge of Java and XMLs etc before i got a smart phone lol, If you stick to it then you should get somewhere, Java is a pain in the ass though, editing .smalis is probably the hardest thing for a new dev

What are the rules with Base ROMS?

How do I know whether or not I can use it? Can I only use "stock-like" roms? or can I use a more advanced rom and mod it and change everything and zip it up as my own?
I think you need permission of the dev of whatever rom you want to base yours off of. Or at least it's polite.

you can't just modify someones work and post it as your own, that's called "kanging" and people get banned for it.
there are "rules" in our forum, they explain this fairly well here:

That's why i'm asking these things, i'm trying to get a better understanding of whats going on here, I don't mean to seem like a pest, Or ever worse a troll, And I'm trying to not break rules, That's not what I'm here for, i'm here to learn.
And the only way to learn is through questions.
Edit: I read the rules, And pretty much, As long as he says it's cool it's cool. I'm clearly not uploading anything at this time, I do not wanna do anyone wrong or be on anyone's bad side, in fact I don't even have a flashable zip.

I'm no developer so I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing there is not, all that Samsung stuff usually relies pretty heavily on the TouchWiz framework, and it's been my experience that it's very difficult getting things running right.

I'm looking to see if someone has already tried it and know if works directly, or with certain tweaks... NOT looking for someone to tell me "hey why don't YOU try and find out".
So yes.. if you don't have anything constructive to offer..save yourself the trouble of posting nonsensical "advice".

You're hilarious. So you just want people to spoon feed you the answer and heaven forbid you try solving the problem yourself. I guess this is your personal help desk seeing how you don't want to try to help yourself and maybe learn something along the way. See how far that gets you around here. Bootloop? bricked phone? from installing a third party keyboard? And I'm nonsensical? The funny thing is I was trying to help you out since I tried the exact "non-sensical" advice to install the aosp mail, sms, and calendar apps from another rom. Keep telling people their being pissy when they respond to your questions hot shot, you'll be real popular. No need to reply either, you've made it clear that anything other than a tried and true, step by step guide, with all assurances of safety is unacceptable, and unfortunately I don't have baby's bottle.

This is a Q&A forum. People are allowed to post their questions without having to worry about people like you who say "this is no damn help desk" so if you feel that way about people who ask questions no matter how silly they might appear to you, then DON'T BOTHER REPLYING! I don't need a baby bottle. You seemed pissy and condescending with your replies. There are several ways you could have suggested it in a better way and I would have even followed your advice. But your tone seemed like you were asking me to do something that was bound to fail.
So no. The problem is with you. Anyways... Moving on.
I did do my research about this. Don't assume that I'm posting without doing my homework.
There is only one posting somewhere where a guy pulled the gs5 keyboard apk and made it into a flashable zip for note. And I did try that and it messed up my phone.
So yes. I know why I'm taking about.
Again. If you are meaning to help then be nicer with your tone.
Thanks for ruining my thread!

I did love the S5 keyboard too. and I realize this isn't an answer to your question, but the SwiftKey Beta comes pretty darn close to satisfying what you might be missing. you should check it out.

Being pissy? Hell, I gave you the direct answer to the question you asked. I don't know if it would work or not, I was just trying to be helpful. Before you go slamming somebody why don't you read their post history, I don't troll people who ask questions, I try to help or point them in the right direction. I'm sure there are rules for decor for the board but **** the both of you. Next time search the entire forum and figure it out for yourself, douche.

WTF bro? All I said was for him not to do what you said as it would be a complete waste of his time because it will not work...Take a flipp'n chill pill already.
Guys, please.. This isn't youtube. Lets try to be constructive instead of destructive. With that being said, back to the topic at hand...As someone that has worked extensively with samsung devices, i'm 99% sure it won't work as a previous commentor said, most if not all samsung specific apps require TW to run them. My guess is to start playing around with some of the diff key boards apps in the market . I'm sure if the S5 keyboard hasn't been replicated yet, it soon will be.
If you are to attempt to pull the apk from the stock S5 rom or if you happen to find it online, don't worry about trying it out. It'll either work or it won't
