Products that are often not new, but could be in first class condition and/or that have been returned opened but not damaged. Usually on a 'first come, first serve' basis.

No idea if this is allowed...

If it isn't, just delete this thread... But I was wondering if I could get ahold.of someone who knows more about the streak, as in get their number for texting or something... I have a decent amount of glitches, occasionally, and I have no idea why, and I'd like to talk to someone about it.

I know it can be intimidating here but if you are having problems just ask. Everyone is friendly and as long as you read the rules and try to look for problems before posting people will help you out. Having said that pretty much no one will send you their number, especially if they really know what they are doing.
Good luck
I wasn't expecting a number, lol. So I shouldn't have even said that, but rather...Some form of decent contact, like an fb, since everyone has one...
Why not post your issues here like everybody else?
Second that.
Asking for personal info is not appreciated.
If people wish to be found they'll put their FB or Twitter in their sig.
Just don't go asking around personal info.

Yea... call them.. they'll have you factory reset your phone and then send you a replacement.
They're the same ones who told me that downgrading from the 353 rom that came with my RMAed replacement phone back to the 351 that I was used to was impossible. (in case you don't all know... this is very possible as described in these two places:
Installing a stock rom

Dell sucks. The reason why Dell-computers are so cheap is because they make it of 2nd hand parts. My friend once ordered a pc and he got a 'new' one which didn't even turn on.
That's offtopic, i know. But i just wanted to 'compliment' Dell.

I find your off topic post rather funny. There are currently six Dell devices in my household (desktop, two laptops, two netbooks, and my Dell Streak) and not a single one of them had a used component in them when purchased. Using two-month old components (based upon date codes) in a system does not equate to "refurbished components in a new computer". Are you sure your friend didn't purchase his Dell from their outlet store?
Dell does use refurbished components and they do sell refurbished computers. The refurbished computers are at the Dell Outlet store. The refurbished components are sent for warranty replacements.
I know that it seems to be fashionable to bash Dell for everything. After all they did screw up in the marketing of the Streak as well as its release. But the "refurbished component in new computer" claims I believe have no basis. If such a thing actually occurred, there would be three things that have not appeared in my search on the Internet: incontravertible proof, an inquiry into Dell's activities, and the accompanying media coverage.
Generally for a large company selling stuff, anything that is sold that isnt brand new usually has to note that it's not new.
someone like dell selling refurbs without listing as such sounds totally implausable and is a quick way to destroy your repupatation as a company.
There's nothing inherently wrong with a qualified refurb, they just arnt labeled as new
Either it was a mistake or your friend was full of it or the most plausable: even the best companies cant stop 100% the chance of a dud making it to a customer. All products have a small (how small depends on the company practices) chance of a DOA.
Saying they use 2nd hand parts is just baseless ranting

That's right, I gotta say.
It's been over 5 years now since Dell pulled that trick of. And I actually can't ONLY blame Dell, because the center at which it was bought had a reputation for 'generating profit' that way. Still it carries Dell's name. So indirectly it's their fault. They're supposed to ensure quality of of a franchiser.

Now I know why I haven't found proof of the foul deed, a lack of an inquiry into Dell's activities, and no media coverage: because Dell isn't responsible. You can't hold Dell responsible for a center's activities. But just as it's become fashionable to blame Dell for everything short of global warming, it's also become fashionable to blame shift.

[Q] How To Get Free Devices for Development?

I recently posted a thread on how I can start programming geared towards the mobile platforms.
I would like to develop apps for more than one mobile platform. However I just have access to an Android device (SE Xperia X10), iPhone 4, and an iPad 2.
Smartphones are not like candies, that you can go pickup at a cheap store.
I mean how and where can I and other people who want to develop apps for specific platforms get free phones for testing and using the apps we develop?
The emulator that is included with the SDKs are not always the best way to test.
Any suggestions? All help is appreciated
EDIT: Forgot to mention that recently Windows Phone called over WebOS developers to develop applications on the WP platform, and Windows gave the developers free devices. But there are not many WebOS devs out there..

Another way is to show your work off to other devices communities here on xda and maybe ask them them to "donate a device" in return for you developing for their specific device. If 10-20 ppl within a community pitch in atleast $10, that's $100-$200 that can be used towards purchasing a reburbished phone on amazon, or ebay. I've seen some phones go for $50-$80 (given they have had ESN's, etc.) But usually I dnt think you need a phone in service to develop for it, unless the app (or whatever your developing) strictly requires you to have service on it to fully test

Thanks a lot man. Not sure if someone would want a specific app by donating a device. Donating few amount of money by a few people would work. But I'll prefer to get a whole device free from, say a company.
I dont think its worth that much, for community members to put their money in.

Well, I guess it would depend on if your app is in high demand or not, would be the deciding factor in whether people are willing to donate to you.

Why don't you try writing X company and ask them. Its not uncommon for them to do this, but im sure they aren't giving out phones to anybody. Why don't you get some credentials under your belt before asking though. Its like asking a company to buy and sponsor an f1 car for you but you don't even know how to put air in the tires on a go cart.
I voided my warranty.
Why don't you just build an App first for your available phones? Then if someone gets interested they might donate to you.

The good news is that the emulators are actually pretty good. They are not a perfect substitute for on device testing, but I have found very few bugs/behaviors that were different on the emulator than on a device.
If you just are sure to test your layouts on all of your supported screen sizes, you should be ok. There is good, up-to-date information on what devices are out in the wild, provided by google: Platform Versions/Screen Sizes.
Do the best that you can, release your app, and watch for feedback from owner's of devices other than yours.

I wish we could get a link. Who wouldn't want a free development device?
i think most of the posters in this thread just want a free device. and keep adding the adjective "development" in front of it like it's cool or something.
Try some developer contests. Microsoft still has some offering Windows Phone as prizes.
This is a 3-year-old thread
Pushing this up since I'm a student and the prices for high-end devices now are quite high. I would like to develop for the community, but the bottleneck is that I can only stick to my poor abused Nexus 4
There's lots of devices out there, tablets, wearables, but I don't have the budget to buy them and use for testing, especially that new techs come out so often and upgrading to to-date devices is quite costly.
What do you guys think? Any success story here?

Devs: Anyone have the same feeling that Samsung devices are most troublesome (kindof)? Always getting complaints from Samsung users...
I just went the tried and true (yet probably the hardest) way and attempted to contact manufacturers directly. Still trying to work with several. Hopefully things work out.

Because it sounds fishy - that tag is used to identify the Streak to Dell for warranty issues for one thing.
Also - because there is no benefit, AFAIK, that can be derived from changing it that does not involve fraud of some kind. If there is, enlighten me.
If you have no intent to deceive then you have no reason to keep the reason a secret.

Dell's warranty is quite specific:
This limited hardware warranty does not cover:
Software, including without limitation the operating system and software added to the Dell-branded hardware products through our factory-integration system, third-party software, or the reloading of software
Non-Dell branded products and accessories
Problems that result from:
External causes such as accident, abuse, misuse, or problems with electrical power
Servicing not authorized by Dell
Usage that is not in accordance with product instructions
Failure to follow the product instructions or failure to perform preventive maintenance
Problems caused by using accessories, parts, or components not supplied by Dell
Products with missing or altered Service Tags or serial numbers (emphasis mine)
Products for which Dell has not received payment
Normal wear and tear

Click to collapse
Dell would not service such a unit under warranty, and has two ways to deny warranty service. The alteration of the tags is the obvious one. Regardless of whether the tag in the battery compartment is removed or not, Dell can tell if the service tag has been changed. The other option is to declare that the unit has been serviced by someone other than Dell. Frankenstein Streaks cobbled together from different non-functional Streaks fall under this.
What the OP is attempting will not work, and his alterations - if they could be done - would facilitate fraud. Thus illegal, and should not be discussed here.
The service tag can be changed, but not in a predictable way.
And just as much unless you can give us a valid reason as mentioned above it's warrentee fraud and likely illegal.
If you have a good reason it might be possible, regardless it's more work then to buy a new streak/streak mobo unless you already own the equipement to do it already. If you did you likely already know, have a clue on how to do it.

Thank you for the info The Manii , I am already on the way, the question arrived when I was trying my best to brick the streak totally and intentionally but in a controllable way , I observed that one time I had lost my service tag, was just empty there, so that wasn't being parsed I guess , why etc I don't know .
As for the other answers from those Dell guards , I can say this, I bought my streak in Aug , this is the first smart phone I own, never been interested in such things before, but this reminds me of the old days when I was active member of Astalavista and was putting my hands on some thing called Linux ( must had been around 1997 I guess ) , very very interesting , carrying this little Linux with me all the time now making me feel like that again. Do not judge next time, if you don't know something you better do like those other people that did read this thread but didn't comment on the legality of my thoughts, walk away peacefully.
Sent from my Dell Streak using Tapatalk
Just to point this out, had you answered my original question in the first place with the same response you gave Manii, you wouldn't have gotten Dell's warranty and comments about the legality of it all shoved down your throat. Instead you tried to be all coy about it and answer questions with questions. So don't play the "righteous indignation" card, because you have no one to blame but yourself for the responses you got.

[Q] N2A SD Micro Card for NT

Noob here.
Just ordered/purchased a N2A 32gb card for my NT. Anything I should know before it ships?
Thanks.
no, there is nothing special to note
(like what specifically do you think may go wrong)?
I have no idea what to expect lol. That's why I'm asking.
I got the NT in January, and it has since up-dated to 1.4.1, so I didn't know if that would become an issue. Or if any other glitches are out there.
I'm fairly adept at muddling my way through technical things, but I have been known to have to call my son when I've muddled to much.

SD Card
Depends on who you got it from! Hope you bought it from Albertwertz or one of the developers here which made it all possible...there's folks out there making a buck on their backs!
Good luck...post questions here...make sure to check unknown sources, both USB debugging boxes and disable OTA updates (download Hidden Settings App from Android Market to do this if your card doesn't already do this for you). If no instructions with your card lots of helpful videos on youtube by Albertwertz on assorted stuff or read through development threads. Note you need the latest Hidden Settings app from the market (I.e., update what is provided, if given this app and it doesn't offer these options.....fairly recent updates which may not be included in the app on your card depending on where you got it! Also, back up ur stuff first!
Yes support developers here, N2A take others work and get the profit.

I have no intention of purchasing a card from n2a, but I do have one question I can't seem to find the answer to.
It looks like they have mastered a way to boot and run entirely from the card and not touch the tablet software. How are they able to do this without rooting the device. If they can do it, it seems like there should be a way for anyone to do this without going through n2a.
BTW, I did contact them about bluetooth and was told that they still haven't figured out a way to turn it on yet.

It all resides on the bootloader and kernel first bootloader needed to be cracked in order to advance the development for this device now you see that we even have a new kernel 3.0 made from scratch. N2A not capable enough i think. We lost loglud because of N2A, he said he will not post anything else in this forum.
About the Bluetooth and other "missing" things is just a matter of time, devs have to figure it out many things like drivers, the lack/incomplete drivers to make things to work as they should and that was in purpose by B&N. Hopefully fattire find the missing code in order to make Bluetooth work.

Hi All - 1st time poster and new to the Nook world. I'm very impressed with all of you on here...great stuff and it shows a lot of hard work and dedication.
I don't want to hi-jack the OP but I do have a question that is related.
Just received my refurb NC the other day and I plan to go the CM7 route by way of SD card. I do have the opportunity to swap the NC (AT NO COST) for a NT. I would plan on using CM7 on the Tablet as well by way of SD card.
The question is, do you recommend keeping the NC or swapping it for the NT?
Thanks in advance all!
IMPORTANT EDIT: This swap would be for an 8GB NT NOT the 16GB variety.
Swap. NT has much better hardware. Cm7 works wonderfully on it and it will only continue to get better. Can't stress the difference in hardware enough. Night and day.

The only way they have gotten ANYTHING is by following XDA developers. Of course "they" haven't figured out bluetooth...because XDA developers haven't figures out bluetooth. As soon as an XDA dev finds a cure for bluetooth...they will conveniently get theirs working as well. These people are freakin leeches and making a profit off of XDA devs by selling their work. There are many users out there who are either not tech savvy enough to muck around with experimental stuff themselves, or just don't have the time of keeping up with all the progresses XDA developers make here. Those users don't mind paying for the convenience and support.

Agreed. There are plently of users around here that maybe aren't considered "recognized developers" but are capable and willing to give support and solve problems, that's what a community's all about.
Read the threads, learn, and pass it on. Support the developers by donating or just hitting the Thanks button, instead of throwing money at leeches. Okay, rant over, haha.

Then why bother with the NT in the first place? Why not just throw money at Apple, or Samsung or Asus and have a convenient tablet with a stock rom and kernel and lots of in-place support?
At least with that scenario, the money goes to hardware development, instead of to middlemen, profiting off of other's work.
Not to mention, "tech-savvy" (i hate that phrase, btw), is an acquired trait. Nobody on here came out of the womb with a knack for android development. They read, they learned, they experimented. Is a similar willingness to learn too much to ask from people, who of their own volition, pointed their browser at a development forum ( emphasis on development)?

Well, there is the galaxy tab 7, and the galaxy note as far as form factor goes.
The cost, is exactly my point. How does it make sense to buy a +/- $200 tablet, and then, instead of following some simple well written (and filmed) step by step tutorials, to fork over more money to a company for what is essentially a very overpriced sd card?

Problem is, the app that I paid for is now free. I emailed customer support about it almost 2 weeks ago and still haven't received word back. Anybody else feel this pain or has anybody even been able to reach them about being compensated for it? Guess for now I have to resort to Aptoide to get what I want.

The app was good enough for you to pay for it when you paid for it, and no features have been removed. The only thing you're upset about is that now other people can get it free? It doesn't sound like you lost anything here. Why would they refund you when you had the app and used it far longer than anyone who is just using the free version now?

i think he's upset that it's free now and he paid for services that r now i guess:good:
The issue is that he paid for a fully working product, now that product has been removed from the play store and replaced by a gimped version of another product that he possibly paid for as well. I myself find this extremely wrong from the company to do this. Instead they should have left the two versions as they were and add a new free gimped one, but they wanted the good ratings from the paid one for the free one... Such bad practice

They made the pro version free and the HD with tablet enhancements paid.
What features did they remove?

that shows you have no idea what you are talking about.
The original 2 version has been removed from the play store (can now only be accessed with some link from them) and replaced by a gimped version of the "tapatalk pro" application. I wont go into detail as to what is all gimped, as you can look t hat up yourself, but just so you wont post something like "whats removed again", for instance posting picturesin the "free" version goes only with watermark...

But the version you paid for (that you installed initially) still posts pictures without a watermark, even though it is not in the Play Store anymore, no?
If not, then I see your point.

Just go to their forums and read all the threads about the mess they did themselves because they were greedy.

Looks like I'll have to do that to get the full story.
I'm a little miffed too because I paid for it, but now I have to use their free version with ads, and if I want the ad free version I have to pay again? Thats messed up to me. Make your paid version free and add back the ads, then make a "new" version that you now have to pay for? So basically I can stick with the old version (which I am), but now I don't get any updates or new features. Yes they are greedy, there have been 1 or 2 app devs that ive encountered that have made changes where previous buyers would "lose out" in some way, but they came up with some kind of way for previous buyers to redeem the new or corrected version. These guys did not....I mean didn't they already have a free version? I know they at least allowed individual forums to create their own version they could distribute freely.
+1 I've paid for 2 versions of the app already, they just taking advantage now. I won't be paying for anymore versions. Came here thinking many more would be as annoyed but not so. Tapatalks own forum has some interesting info but little care from the devs. Poor form.

Yep, they even go so far as to locking every thread that touches this problem... Worst company ever.

Yes, they won't even talk about it. Second time this year I've had a developer screw me over changes to a paid app. Then they complain about people not buying it.

I don't mind buying better apps etc but all they ever do is rebrand the same app with a feature or 2 and then ask for more money. Almost like we're paying to beta test. The arguments about buying a new copy of windows are stupid. But if people must, XP -> Vista -> 7 were significant enough changes to warrant paying for a new product IMO.
I was fooled twice, my fault but won't happen a 3rd time. If they do happen to release something amazing, I'll obtain it from a 3rd party source unfortunately.
Well I don't think you will receive a refund. This isn't even logical enought to debate.
I remain of the view that the old version was much better with the themes, and everything else
