Hi,
Last week i got my Galaxy S2 and am really obsessed with the performance and beauty of her.
Today i installed lastest version of Kies and when i connected my phone thru USB, it said that new version of firmware is available (KF3).
I clicked OK to upgrade the firmware and it showed downloading firmware and after some time it said that "Failed to convert to upgrade mode" and i tried upgrading my firmware for 5-6 times but no luck..
Any one here know how to update the firmware to KF3 (INDIAN version)
Turn OFF AV and Firewall .
jje
thanks mate...but i tried but no luck....
Try resetting your phone to factory settings.Sometimes there are certain apps which interrupt the upgrade procedure. Needless to say, Do backup all your data and apps
better you would use odin to flash a rom.
Make sure you installed KIES in administrator mode.
Somehow i followed the steps given by you guys and able to successfully download the firmware. but after some time Kies showed some error in unknown language ( i think its korean) with only OK button (dont have a screen shot though).....now my phone was showing a little android guy with "Downloading....do not turn off target".....i waited for nearly 1.5 hrs and nothing happend...then i searched in net, there it asked me to power off the phone and switchng it on again.....
it came back online as usual and when i cheked the version it was still showing my old one.....any idea what went wrong? and what the heck is that error message, written like a chopstick house......
Solved
i had faced similar isssues while trying to upgrade for last 2 days.
it worked today - all i did was start Kies in Administrator mode.
kies didnt download the firmware again - it took it from previous downloads and did the upgrade.
try it out!

I have been trying to download the new firmware since last 3 days, I even reset the phone back to factory setting, also using Kies in Administrator mode but everytime I click on the option of firmware upgrade it does the back up but after that it says "connection to Gt-i9100 lost ".
Any idea why this would be happening ?
Also any noticeable difference after the update ?

earlier i did the factory reset (including USB erase) plus re installed USB drivers from Kies menu few times at home but it was not upgrading.
Just reconnected on a different machine (as was trying sitting at work ) it just worked. Yesterday I did face teh same issue at work machine as well.
most likely it looks to me either a USB driver issue and / or admin issues.
Hope it helps.
yet to come across any significant improvement changes. still in the mode of re installation of apps.
I tried everything...did factory reset, ran kies in admin mode etc....but still no luck.....can i use odin to update my firmware? if i update now using odin, can i update the next release of updated firmware with kies?

People seem to regularly have problems with Kies. My biggest one is getting the firmware to download: it often times out more than half-way through, eating up big chunks of my broadband data cap every time.
Odin is usually the most reliable way of doing a firmware update. Make sure you use the USB cable that came with the phone, because people have had problems using other cables (such as ones that come with HTC phones).
If you do a firmware update through Odin, it doesn't necessarily prevent later updates through Kies. The only thing you need to watch is that you're using a Kies-released firmware that's correct for your phone. For example, if you've got an Indian phone (GT-I9100LKAINU), you need to flash the XWKF3/ODDKF3/DDKE4 firmware. This is the latest Kies release for that phone. If you flashed a different firmware, such as the XWKF3/XEUKD1/XXKE7 firmware for European phones, Kies will no longer find updates.
You can use the Check Fus Downloader (v1.2 at fus.nanzen.se) to find the latest firmware for your phone, and to download an Odin-flashable package. This will give you a ZIP file, and inside that is a TAR file. This TAR file is then used by Odin.

Hi all,
Quick question for you (an answer would be most appreciated!)...
I have an unlocked SGS2 bought from Carphone Warehouse, with a Vodafone sim card.
After buying the phone, installed Kies 2.0. Initially every time it loaded, windows advised that something was broken within Kies (running Vista, 32 bit). Initially was offered to update phone's firmware, but update was always incomplete. Figured it was linked to error message when opening Kies...
Managed to work out that an update for windows wouldn't install, but fixed it through repair, so re-installed Kies. Now, no error message appears when opening Kies. Hurrah!
However, no firmware upgrade prompt appears, as Kies tells me I have the latest firmware (KE1). How on earth do I get the latest patch for brightness, connectivity etc (KE2 I believe). This is an unrooted phone.
Any thoughts/ideas/opinions are most welcome.
Thanks,
Jamie
Wait new firmware released rolling out now .
KE7 .
jje
Hey,
I too could not update to latest KE7 firmware using Kies.
I had KE1 previously and it seems, that the KE7 update is rolled out only for KE2 users.
What I did is just update to KE7 using Odin flashing tool.
It is safer to use than Kies, anyway
Here is a nice guide you can use, it is very easy so don't worry: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Any Kies update is not instant the phone provider has to update and load the Firmware to the server .
Rollouts can be over a few weeks .
jje
I have an unbranded UK phone with unbranded firmware, so I presumed it should roll out at the same time, for all unbranded UK phones?
Anyway, Odin did the trick...
I tried to update of Kies this morning BUT, it still shows in the About menu is on KE2
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Good news all! Successful update to latest firmware after a couple of attempts (timed out twice).
Assuming original update was pulled as a newer version was being prepared.
Many thanks for replies.

Got fed up in the end and rebooted by holding down the power key, everything seems to be fine. Still says it needs updating though, I think I'll wait to see if theres any way of updating OTA.
Think it's all through kies, no ota with samsung I believe. Glad to hear your phone was ok! Only drawback of the phone in comparison to my trusty old nexus one!

Hello Thr ,
I am in a bit of a problem
I have Kies installed - Version 2.0.1.11053_99
Windows 7
Galaxy S2 - I9100DDKE2 ( PDA:KE8/PHONE:KE2/CSC:KE2(INU)
which i bought from INDIA two weeks back .
Now i am in South Africa when i connect it to Kies here , i am getting a popup which says that a Firmware Update is available.
Latest Firmware Version shown is
PDA:KF3/PHONE:KE4/CSC:KF3(INU)
Now when i start the Upgrade process , it fails to download the Firmware update and shows me the error :
"Error found in the downloaded file.Do you want to try downlaiding again ?"
and if i click YES then the same thing happens again .
I was using this Kies on the same laptop for my Galaxy S(SGS 1) before and never got an issue with it.
This is happening numberous times and i am not sure whether it is due to my phone being from India and that i am trying to upgrade it here in South Africa or
actually something with Samsung South Africa .
Can any one please explain to me what is happening and how do i Fix this now.
P.S.- not going to either use a ROM or Root it myself options ...
Many Thanks
Poor internet connection turn off AV and firewall .

Thanks Will try it tomm,
Strange i never faced this sort of a problem with my Galaxy S ..
U think it has nothing to do with the fact that my phone was bought in India and that i am now in South Africa?
failed to run firmware upgrade unknown error occured
OK so still getting the Error
I have tried to reinstall the Samsung Kies again on my laptop.
"failed to run firmware upgrade unknown error occurred"
see i was facing same pro before i try numbers of time and alt last i succeeded wht i do it sounds pretty odd dont let your windows stay ideal for more then 45 sec it let the download interrupt try tht method u will be able to download the updates best of luck
Can u please elaborate where u were facing this issue and what ur firmware version is .
Also did u buy the phone in India and used it elsewhere or not?
what is happening in my case is that the download keeps failing and everytime i start it again , it goes a little further so in about 5-6 attempts it reaches 100%. and then when it tries to update the device with it , it fails to say that the downloaded file is corrupt or has an error or something like it.
Guyz please help !!!
help please----Galaxy S2 experts..
Guyz do help me please. i have tried reseting my phone and reinstalled kies a number of times now...
nothing seems to be working,,,,and now worse enuf all Kies does it says that the update is available and i click YES and then it just looses connection with the phone and reconnects again and again keeps giving me the update available popup ....what to do?
Looking at how the connection is being made, I'd refute the USB drivers problem and would rather resort to ODIN for FW install. Its fairly easy to use, if you are still able to get into Download/Recovery mode. The help on ODIN is spread all across the forum, let me know if you would still need any help on ODIN part....KIES is usually found to behave irrationally while upgrading firmware.
Thanks for coming to my help.
You see i am a little scared of using ODIN since i only bought this phone a week ago and don't want to mess up the warranty or future updates etc.
If i do use Odin (i have used it before for my galaxy S) , does it void my warranty or anything like it?
also will i be able to use Kies for future updates or would i always have to use ODIN from then onwards?
Finally , what sort of issues can i run into since i bought this phone in India and am now using this in SA?
Any help is appreciated.
Well, ODIN doesn't really void the warranty as you could always flash the country-specific firmware and flash the download counter too with the help of a small USB JIG (available for a minimal price at e-bay). If you really want to go down the KIES road, you might want to try a different system, cable/USB port (yes, it sometimes is the culprit) and see how it treats you then. If it still fails to do its assigned job, I think ODIN is the way to go...I have had 2 SGS and now SGS2 and never once did I go with KIES, well I tried once but it didn't go too well...since then ODIN is what I love. You can use KIES afterwards if you wish to, provided it has the country specific FW, so if you bought it from India, it should reflect the FW of India (seems like FW is mapped somehow with the IMEI).
Regarding your last, you shouldn't really bump into any roadblocks, should you find yourself in a soup, XDA fraternity would come to your rescue. Read thoroughly and proceed.
Any update on how did it go?
Sorted ,,,actually tried it on Win Xp and after two failures with decompressing binary files it went thru the third time
Seems like Win 7 didn't like my brand new galaxy S2

Of course you can update official firmwares via Odin. But as you are sometimes getting connection with Kies, I'd advice you to re install the drivers and then try again. And make sure USB debugging is Off before connecting.
However if the problem remains then Odin is the option, and you can get official firmwares from here,

additionally if i download the indian update version on my vodafone uk SGS II, is it ok, ?

My phone build No. is Gingerbread.BUKG2

Your Baseband is KG1! Did you update via Odin before? If you updated a leaked version then Kies won't support any further update.

How can I get kies to work to update my SGS to gingerbread?
Hi I'm a noob member of this forum, but have been watching it for 3 months. With suggestions from this site, I have eventually managed to get the current version of kies (2.0.0.11014_49) to connect to my Galaxy S I9000 - at least some of the time (it's a bit hit and miss).
I have been able to sync my contacts and podcasts from my phone to my computer using kies.
I can get to the kies screen for updating firmware. BUT - this is the really frustrating part - it tells me that my firmware is up to date.
It correctly tells me that my firmware version is:
PDA-JP5 PHONEJP3 CSC-JP4(XSA) - this matches the output of the not-so-secret key-code.
From the handset, in Settings About Phone I get:
Firmware version 2.2
Baseband DTJP3
Kernel version 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #7
Build FROYO.DTJP5
I am aware of the post "Kies firmware update without using (all of) Kies!" by miki4242, but this doesn't apply to the latest kies. Does anyone know how to do the same thing with the current version of kies?
I'm also aware of the post "Kies 2.0 Registry Patcher 1.8.0.0, patch registry on latest Kies" by Nodial, but I'm looking to do it as simply as I can. I have not rooted my phone, and would prefer to use Samsung software (kies or part thereof) to get gingerbread. Surely it shouldn't be so hard!?!
(Or why can't we get it as a download direct to the phone from samsung or the market?)
PS: I tried to post this qn as a new thread, but the site wouldn't let me (the error msg said I couldn't paste outside links).
I never used Odin for updates however I recently updated via Kies and my current firmware is kj3, now waiting for official ICS update

Hi everyone,
I brought a new galaxy s2 phone about 4 weeks ago and it has spent most of that time soft bricked since I tried to update it to the newest firmware, K14....
I am using windows 7 starter, 32bit. I have installed kies, uninstalled and re-installed kies, tried uninstalling kies and just using the drivers.
Recently I did a clean install of windows, installed kies, as more drivers seem to be recognized and downloaded odin v1.85. I restart the computer, start task manager end all processes that say kies, run odin as a administrator, put the tar file in pda, only auto reboot is selected. I then plug in the phone, in download mode, wait for yellow box and press start and the process only goes as far as boot.bin.
I have tried all of my usb ports and the only difference is the number of the modem installed driver and how far along odin gets. With two ports it only goes as far as setup connection which was as far as anything went before I re-installed windows. I have replaced the usb cable and made sure the phone battery is fully charged. The phone was put into usb debugging mode before it was bricked. I have attached a picture of what drivers get installed when I plug in the phone. The firmware I am attempting to flash is the uk 3 version off the firmware page of this website.
Please can somebody give me the solution it is driving me nuts!
Sorry for waffling but I figure you need to know what I've tried so that I don't waste anybodies time.
Thanks guys
Did you try a different stock rom? Did you try a different pc? Or if you want to, flash a CF-root kernel. Then boot in recovery and flash a rom of your choice.
The flashcounter will start and stock roms can't be flashed this way (at least as far as I know).
Is your phone a I9100 model?
I ask this to make sure you are trying to flash the correct firmware for your device.

Hi Lenny,
Yh, i have tried it on my desktop which runs 7 home premium. Clean install with same results. Tried the K14 firmware a few times but that never got any further than setup connection. Don't understand the rest of your post sorry. Can you do a flash for dummies thing? And is there a firmware you would recommend trying?
@ aceofclubs -the box says i9100 and so does the sticker in the back.
@ JJEgan - the first cable I used was the one in the box and while the one I have replaced by ebay, they had good feedback. The K14 firmware was given to be by a user of the galaxy s2 that he had successfully flashed with.
Does the phone look to have installed correctly, the guy who gave me the firmware said he had abd appear in device manager, which I haven't got. Also after the phone is finished installing drivers if I click in the system tray, the green icon that shows devices that are present is not there and neither is the phone but if I go into device manager samsung composite device is.

No you dont need a ADB neccesarily for flashing. ADB (Android Debug Bridge) is a tool that comes with the Android SDK that allows you to control and interface with your Android device. Well do u have the phone specifications before bricking it, like Model No, Built, CSC, Kernal Etc.
First try to uninstall Kies and Install the latest version, so that you have the latest drivers.
Check the Intratech thread on Stock ROM ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278) and download the correct rom.( I presume you have I9100 Intenational Version of S2). Open Odin 1.85, do not change any options, brownse and put the stock rom u downloaded into the PDA section and click on start button, you should be good.PM me if you have any issues.
The above didn't work. Here's what I got:

AS you have the yellow box in Odin you have the drivers all the firmware in that link works .
run odin as a administrator, put the tar file in pda, only auto reboot is selected. I then plug in the phone, in download mode, wait for yellow box and press start
Lets do this the right way just to be sure . Open Odin put the tar file in PDA
go to download mode at first screen download mode on phone follow instruction ( vol up from memory ) after next screen connect Samsung USB cable to phone and PC .

Thanks, think I've done that anyway but, just to check, what do you mean by next screen?
The screen when you are in download mode and press volume up.

So close! I plugged the phone in and got as far as cache with the green progress bar showing just the tiniest bit. Left it for over an hour but the bar didn't move at all! Encouraged I restarted the computer to try again only to find that now the computer and odin won't recognize the phone until I uninstall and reinstall kies and always hangs on cache. I restarted in the first place as the phone never shows in the system tray. Sorry to be a bore but have you any idea why everyone else can plug in and flash and my machines refuse to! I welcome any ideas you have. Thank you.
Instead of Odin, you could try Heimdall. Maybe that will work for you.

hey hope everyone had a good christmas and new year. Still no joy, where do I get PIT files to flash with the newest version of heimdall to go with our firmware? The newest version won't let me add files until I enter a PIT. I tried version 1.1 but I couldn't get it to recognise a compatible device.
On the odin front: I thought I'd cracked it. It started flashing, took hours but I had half a green progress bar and then it just seem to freeze. Also this seems replicable a few times and then I get stuck at setup connection again. I then have to do a system restore to get it to flash to the furthest point again. Does this give anyone any clues? Or does anyone know of any heimdell packages I could try? And the long shot, any way of getting firmware on to an sd card and flashing that way when a phone is soft bricked?
Sorry if I'm annoying you but there has to a way round this. I brought a rooted one to use while this is sorted, love the phone but need to know I can update and be able to sort it out if things go wrong.
Thanks again for your help and suggestions.
...is not supported to update firmware via Kies.
This is the message that appears in Kies. My phone is on a three contract and anyway I've rooted it many times but something ****ed up a month ago and it got softbricked so I followed that tutorial to fix it using the PIT file (the only way that would work for me) and the phone worked but my 16GB phone was effectively now a 9GB phone, and it freezes quite often.
So I gave it to Three to repair it and they told me to do this first and then bring it back. So they said to update via Kies but I get that message and it says my firmware is "PDA:LPH / PHONE:LPH / CSC:LPH (KOR)"
If I bring it back to them and say it won't let me update via Kies will they tell me they can't take it back because I've obviously rooted or something? My custom binary counter is 0.

Alternatively you can download the latest stock ROM from SamMobile (=> http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9100&r=1#regiona) or from here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487 and flash it with Odin to your phone (description is for example here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278).
If it's an officially released firmware for your phone in your region/country, then KIES should recognize it for future updates.
Good luck !
