Has anyone else experienced when taking a 3D pic and you lock your phone and then unlock, the weather animation is in "3D mode" although it does not pop out or nothing due to it being just a single 2D image looks like if we unlock this puppy (by unlock i mean S off) we may be able to create a 3D lock screen I dont care to make an entire rom in 3D but the lockscreen in 3D would be nice. Anyone willing to look into this with me?

I wouldn't say 45 minutes. 1.5 hours, however....
That would be cool. And the idea has been through around a few times. But yeah, battery would be pretty bad. Also, the parallax barrier isn't arrange to do portrait properly I don't think. Im pretty sure its aligned to only do landscape. If you notice when you view a 3d pic in portrait your viewing angle is like 2degrees and it still doesn't look quite right.

Right. It would technically work, but it would look like crap. I don't think its worth the effort. Maybe a launcher that turns into 3D when viewed in landscape mode? Or a toggle to turn the display from 2D to 3D. Hopefully all this will be possible if the devs here can unlock the bootloader.
I would love to have it 3D, like in the commercials. I feel like I got short changed when I turn on my phone and the home screen isn't jumping out at me. Now that would shut up the iphone geeks.

Hey, now there is a thought. a mod that would use the 2D-3D switch on the phone that is dedicated to just the camera, hack that so it turns 3D on once the phone goes into landscape mode. You know, like what everyone thought the 3D switch was for in the first place! hack it up and name it "the ORIGINAL 3D switch" or something.
Also, something I have been thinking about (which isn't possible I don't think but, it SHOULD have been something incorporated.)
the phones have a tilt sensor. why wasn't the parallax barrier linked to that in some way, so whenever the phone is tilted from it's centered calibration, the PB would adjust in real time to the new position. voila!, good bye narrow 3D viewing angle.
Sounds interesting but the barrier is a physical thing more than it is software or am I wrong

most definitely is a physical thing, which is why it wouldn't really be possible now that the phone is released. cool idea none the less.
I had this happen to me and everything in the launcher had 3d-ish effect to it even the app drawer. It was pretty neat but eventually it went away.
Looking at the screen while in the sun you can actually see the parallax barrier..... What I saw was a uniform grid
So technically the only reason 3d couldn't function properly in portrait would be because of the lack of real estate to trick your eyes..

The grid was like 10x5

Someone who has the device, please verify. I have not seen a conclusive answer to if it can show 3d in portrait or not. Most say no, some say yes. Someone with the phone can test this quickly.
If it doesn't show 3d in portrait, what does it do when trying to view a 3d photo in portrait?
Thanks.
EDIT: several users confirm below that the screen does indeed show 3d in the portrait orientation, albeit with mixed results.
Do bot have the device but I can assure that you cannot. Parralax barrier can only do one orientation.

Taking a portrait picture would be pointless for 3D since the cameras would be on top of eachother and the file itself wouldn't work in portrait.

I'm not asking about taking a picture, only viewing it. And I only ask about a photo cause it's easy and direct yes or no. What I really want to know is if the screen can show 3d in portrait. I've assumed that it cannot. But xHausx thought it could as well as GSM Arena said it could.
I know the theories. Just want someone with the phone to do this one test to prove it.

actually its not that bad in portrait, for some reason it takes a bit longer for my eyes to register the 3D lol
but after a minute it'll look fine in portrait, but of course the pic is smaller
when u landscape it, it goes full screen and then its easier to see
But if defiinately shows in portrait. I havent taken any pics yets, im using the 15 standard 3d pics that came with the phone
I have the device, and while it does show a 3d picture in portrait mode, it is not in 3d, its eschewed and weird. when you turn it to landscape the photo becomes 3d.

That's likely because your brain is going through the motions of imagining that both of your eyes are stacked on top of eachother...seriously. It is physically impossible to have an actual 3D viewing experience in portrait...perhaps your brain is interpreting it and getting some depth information out of it...kinda...but it is not intended to be viewed that way.
...though I do think think an orientation agnostic parallax barrier technology could be developed and made relatively inexpensive eventually. I know nothing about the parallax barrier technology, though as a high end specialty screen printer in a former life I'm very familiar with lenticular printing and I imagine it's the same idea...I also imagine that the barrier is a black-n-white LCD type technology oriented at angles....and I don't see why they couldn't have multiple angles...though that would probably add thickness....but once the resolution of the screen gets high enough it would probably not be too noticeable....
...or I'm way the fnck off...
I like saywhat's take on the matter!
Others please confirm. I'm getting geeked for 3d ui possibilities now
We should just rename this entire General forum to "Confirmation Bias Central" until everyone gets the damned phone in their hands...christ.
I too thought that paralax barriers only worked in one orientation, but the portrait orientation definitely looks 3d. 3d UI sounds sweet, I would suggest a default UI orientation of landscape - I know I almost always have my phone in landscape anyway
ps - I am on my EVO 3d right now.

Amen to that, lol.
HTC was not clear at all and I have heard conflicting theories from all across the board...though I am suspicious that HTC not commenting directly on it would suggest that they don't want to say it can't be in 3D for 90% of the things you use your phone for.
I don't see it being impossible, in fact quite the opposite as I explained above...though I figure we would have heard about this specifically if it was "3D however you hold it" technology.
I hope it is 3D all the way around, but, logic is pointing in the opposite direction....don't underestimate your brain's ability to overestimate it's input stimuli, it's fascinatingly good at 'filling in the details', especially visually.

Maybe it does 3d in portrait with 2 parallax barriers and switches between them. And perhaps they didn't advertise it because portrait 3d is even more eye straining? Idk, but it's cool if it can do it.

I don't see how or why that would be impossible to do...and like I said before (and I should google it...maybe later...not now) I know nothing of this technology, but I imagine it's like old black-n-white LCD technology with each strip at an angle...or two, one on each side for alternating lines....but perhaps they could do a matrix and trigger it like a dot-matrix LCD, one for horizontal and one for vertical depending on orientation....though that also changes the angles...I wonder if the supposedly limited viewing angle has something to do with this in any way.
...don't concern me, I look at my phone dead-on...like everybody...and I don't treat it like a home theater either...
The 2D -> 3D button is only for the camera, right? Is it going to be possible to completely turn off the 3D effect? I'm sure the novelty will wear off and I'd rather the battery life.
OK, I had fully decided to sit this one out. All week, I've been reading and watching reviews. Though I had a preorder at Radio Shack, I read the reports on launch day and decided to stay home and call in to cancel. I was one of the nay-sayers.
But yesterday, I was shopping next to the Sprint Store, and decided to go in to see it... and I was hooked. Went to Radio Shack, and the girl there saved me the last Evo 3D anyway, knowing I'd come in after all. How funny.
My reaction after having it for awhile? I truly love my OG Evo, but this device is much better in very noticeable ways:
1. The first thing I noticed is a small thing, but the haptic feedback is DRAMATICALLY better. Tighter and more subtle, just as it should be. Haven't heard this in any of the reviews, but I really like it. Makes the whole phone feel better for me, because I'm a fan of the feedback, especially with the keyboard.
2. This think is insanely fast and smooth. No lag, and it feels almost like it can read my mind going somewhere before I think about it.
3. Not a Sense fan, but I like the effects and speed of this. I could see myself staying with Sense if devs are able to improve on it. See gripes below on what I don't like.
4. Camera isn't as bad as I expected. It may even be significantly improved. The app definitely is. Low light stills are better. Video is improved but still awful, and the sound is not improved at all.
5. The 3D? I actually love it. It's fun... really a nice feature. But I can see that you have to have good eyesight and some patience for it. My wife took one look and wanted nothing more of it. Reminds me of the old Viewmaster images, and I was a big fan. Brings back a bit of my childhood. Good app idea is for Viewmaster to revive all its old collections and make them available for download. How cool would that be? Sign me up!
6. As a phone, I love that the speaker is loud enough, and call quality doesn't sound any worse. Not sure it's improved, though.
OK, now for some gripes:
1. Though I generally like the size and weight, the new screen actually feels much smaller. It's narrower, of course, which in combination with the higher resolution makes everything smaller in portrait view. I'm not sure the screen is brighter and better than the Evo as some have said... seems somewhat duller by comparison.
2. My biggest gripe is that the capacitive buttons are TOO FREAKING BRIGHT, and there doesn't seem to be a way to fix that. And they never shut off. Devs need to fix this or give us ways to adjust to taste.
3. The 3D in movies is much harder to see and notice. The movies have tended to make 3D effect more subtle, and therefore it's difficult to see dramatic effect on this smaller screen. That's both good and bad, I guess. Don't imagine I'll be investing in 3D movies on this, but who knows?
4. Small things... a little harder to hold (or maybe I'm not used to it yet), the speaker isn't as good or as loud and there seems to be a bit of vibration.
5. Sense 3.0, though fun and slick, feels confining and incomplete to me. I miss some of the customization I had in CM7, but would love to keep the lockscreen and weather effects. Somebody explain to me the function of that stupid carousel. First time, "whee!" but after just dumb. This phone desperately needs root and the devs to add things that are missing (customizable buttons on the notification bar, GB wink-out effects, custom rosie, etc.).
In conclusion, I expected to hate it, or not like it enough to try it. That was dead wrong. Is it enough for me to keep it? Well, some key improvements are missing for me, like a significantly improved camera (I'm a photographer, and very picky about this). Sure, I have better cameras, but this one is with me all the time. I'd like to remove the SD card without removing the battery.
I'm loving the 3D, but can see how some non-nerds would lose patience with it quickly. I'm guessing that we'll see a service for ordering 3D prints in the future and other sample 3D photos (c'mon, Viewmaster!), and that will be fun.
Bottom line is that it HAS to get root in the next 30 days, or it goes back for sure. I've seen too many improvements on the Evo with custom ROMs, and I've made my phone new again so many times over. Gotta have that. And just think what the devs could do with this phone.
Nice review! Interesting perspective.
Yeah... No clue about the carousel.. it spins to fast to be useful... I love mine too!
The buttons definitely are to bright... They need to dim with the screen.

I was leary of a launch day buy but I'm really glad I got it.
I really didn't care about 3d but I must admit I'm liking it.
Have to have root though.
Forgot to add.. I hate the app drawer, I want to fling it.
The charge port needs to be on right side.
The bright capacitive buttons where starting to get on my nerves as well. You can turn them off with the "screen filter" app from the market. The its primary feature is to dim the screen, but you can keep the screen at 100% and still disable the buttons' backlight.

I'm still on the fence, but I do shoot video with my phone enough (hey, it's always with me) to have this turn me off. I've dealt with the Evo 4G's terrible (and I mean, TERRIBLE!) audio on videos because it's overall a great phone, but I was hoping the next generation would have fixed the problem. Poop.
First thing I noticed was the haptic feedback as well. I told the BB employee that it felt like the Droid X and he said that a few other people had told him that, too.
I didn't notice how bright the capacitive buttons were, so I guess it doesn't bother me.
I hate the app drawer as well! I don't like the "pages." I feel that pages could've been implemented better (um, horizontally maybe?)
As much as I thought I'd be keeping 3d off permanently I've actually had a lot of fun messing around with it.
One other small thing that bugs me is how the clock widget always seems to have to catch up when you go back to the home page from something else. It's frozen on the time it was when you were looking at it last and quickly flips to update. It's minor, and won't matter too much because I plan on not using the sense clock widget anyway.

The carousel would make more sense if it took you to the home screen every time you flicked it. You can use that instead of the home button.
Why I would use the carousel to bring me back to the same page I am on makes no sense to me.....
Thanks for the review OP, i think you were head-on with your points.
I do think tho, the narrowness of this device allows me to put a case on it and actually prefer its larger width, i loved that in the OG Evo.
As for the Carousel, kinda lame that once you flick it and it starts spinning, you can't put your finger on it and choose which screen to go to, it always recovers to the screen you flicked from.

Just extract the flashlight apk from a sense rom in the EVO 4g dev section, it works fine on our phones.

The 3d images and videos on my phone doesnt really work all the time. The two images dont really line up properly. It seems like the phone is having convergence issues or something. The images look somewhat 3D but there is a lot of double images and ghosting. Nothing like when I got it out of the box. The 3d effect was perfect. Sometimes a hard reset will tame it, even tried a factory reset but the problem keeps coming back. Does anyone else have this issue?
i too have this issue.
My hypothesis, is that it cant or didnt auto focus correctly

i went to a baseball game yesterday and took some pics... i seriously have to cross my eyes to see a solid picture. it seems the 3D camera works well for pics between 3 to 50ft away, anything farther seems to strain your eyes when trying to focus. The players were doubled (with lots of space between them) and focusing before taking the pic isn't that accurate(even in 2D), the samsung galaxy s has much MUCH better focus abilities. Took a pic of the city skyline and it wasn't as crisp as i thought it would be
i hope software updates in the future improve this (ie the camera from the new mytouch)

Another symptom is that 3D pictures in the gallery don't work in portrait. It just shows the two pictures interlaced together with no 3D effect at all.

I've seen a video on youtube that looked like you describe, but it seemed to be a fluke, most of the other things looked as I'd expect.
Our cameras are fixed and can't adjust for different distances like our eyes can so the 3d effect will be lost of trying to capture somethin far away....
As far as 3d in portrait it works but it wasn't meant to be seen that way
Bussin Caps n 3D
I've notice this also but I call it a bad take on a picture. Just like it was stated above the camera might not have focused correctly. Usually another take does it. And I've noticed that looking at 3D content doesn't strain my eyes like before because I trained my eyes for this this type of media. Now I could see a 3D pic in an instant.
My ''xDU4L C0R3 SH00T3Rx'' shot you down in 3D!
Nah its not a bad take and pictures are being taken properly. I know this because after a hard reset everything shows up fine for a minute or two before reverting back. (3d effect in landscape but not spaced properly so lots of ghosting and double images, no 3d effect AT ALL in portrait just shows two interlaced photos.) I know the 3d isn't optimal in portrait but its not working for me, period.

I'd be interested in what other see when you put the attached on your phone and view it. Just drop the mpo file on the sd card under DCIM\100MEDIA and then view it via the gallery. Turn the phone landscape with the capacitive buttons on the right. When you hold the phone as you would to view any 3D image, you should be able to close one eye at a time and see two different images. If the phone has perfect separation, you'd see the word LEFT with only your left eye open and RIGHT with only the right eye open. But inevitably, you'll probably be able to see a faint ghost of the "wrong" word too ("LEFT" in the right eye or "RIGHT" in the left eye).
How much crosstalk do you see? I see a faint ghost of the "wrong" word indicating there is some crosstalk or ghosting but it's really pretty good separation. The ghosting on mine is pretty faint but I can still see the wrong (ghosted) word in each eye. The interesting thing is, on my phone, the amount of ghosting varies. On mine, the "T" in "RIGHT" is the darkest/worst.
I'm just wondering how much variation there is in our screens and if some are better than others. Be sure to close one eye at a time and fine tune the angle of the phone so you can get the best angle with the minimum possible ghosting.
Mike
Worked for me. I don't see the opposite with either eye closed. Pretty cool how that works. No ghosting at all.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
Hmm. Ended up being pretty easy to take a picture of what I see through my left eye. Just use a camera and move to the left of center while looking through the viewfinder until the ghosted word is as dim as possible and take a picture. This is what mine looks like.
Mike
I Also don't see the opposite with either eye closed. Is cool indeed but wouldn't it just matter how your holding your phone ? If i slightly tilt it with one eye closed then i start to see the opposite word.

The key is to tilt the phone back and forth while closing one eye at a time so that you get the minimum amount of ghosting at one particular tilt: that's the best you'll be able to do with a real 3D image. Distance from your eyes also does make a difference so you kinda have to play with it.
Mike
Oh Lord. I hope this thread doesn't end up spawning another group of returns/exchanges. I just tested this on my wife's 3vo. Hers has a crooked screen and it doesn't show a trace of ghosting under the exact same conditions and brightness! Mine (with a straight screen) shows the ghosting problem. Not only that, hers keeps good separation through a much wider range of angles! Mine fluctuates a lot and it is VERY picky WRT angle. Completely different than hers.
One reason I tried this is that I've always felt that my first 3vo, one with a crooked screen, had better 3D depth and my new one with the straight screen just didn't have the same depth. Now I know why. I guess with these screens you either get a crooked screen or bad 3D. Wonder if there are any out there that have both a straight screen and good 3D? Both phones are HT16 serial numbers and 0002 hardware so they should have the same screen, right? If so, there seems to be some variation in how well the 3D works on these screens.
Mike
I guess I need to change my name. From this point forward you shall all refer to me as Ima. Ima Weetodd.
I looked through the 3D samples and the one with the river, rocks, and the mountains in the background looked especially bad. You could see ghosts of the rocks on either side and it really ruined the 3D effect. The Garfield 3D trailer from YouTube looked horrible too: hard to even resolve a single image. Visions of me going back to the Sprint store for a second exchange started to enter my mind. Until...
Guess what? I never would have expected this! I cleaned my screen thoroughly and NO ghosting at all now!!! It didn't even look dirty but apparently a thin film of finger grease is all that was needed to cause the ghosting. Apparently there was just enough refraction to cause a decent portion of the wrong side to get through to each eye. I repeated the separation test and looked at the pics/videos again with a clean screen: zero ghosting. Just to be sure I wasn't insane or switching the screen off/on wasn't what caused it, I actually rubbed my hands all over my face and then over the screen until I could see a faint film. I'm not a particularly greasy dude but that's all it tool: ghosts galore came back.
I guess if nothing else, I've learned a dirty screen REALLY affects 3D and if anyone has any question about whether or not their 3D is working properly, the image attached to the OP should serve us well.
Mike
I'm returning mine now I see ghosting
J/k . mine has absolutely no ghosting at all, the screen Has a slight tilt and its horribly dirty right now.

Some ghosting for me, not a big deal though i guess

Something else I noticed. This is proof positive that the phone does support 3D in portrait mode. Bring up the image in portrait and look at it. It is VERY sensitive to angle and there is a little ghosting but at just the right angle, it does work. Holding the phone portrait, only "LEFT" shows to the left eye and "RIGHT" shows to the right eye. If you are off even a fraction of a degree though, you start seeing the words appear in various primary colors as you tilt the phone. At just the right angle (face-on), it does appear to fully support 3D in portrait.

Have you tried using the wand icon to correct the issue? Mine works perfectly although I do feel I need to hold it with the right side of phone slightly closer to my face rather than straight on.

The "Adjust 3D alignment" feature adjusts how far apart the two frames appear via shifting the frames in/out a certain number of pixels. That will have no affect on ghosting: ghosting/crosstalk is an error in the alignment of the two parallax barriers on the screen. That gap/angle is not adjustable.

I've seen ghosting in some pics and was able to fix it buy using that feature. And sometimes in some media I can not get it to go away at all.

Okay, phone has been out for 7 or so months and still don't see anybody developing 3D homescreeens, similar to what you could see in the first commercials. The option for the screen to "tilt" from side-to-side isn't what I'm talking about. Or is the phone not capable of this?
I believe it is capable to do, but however the source code for 3d is not available, which is why the 3d doesn't work on the camera in any roms yet
my 3D camera works
So you want the parallax barrier engaged on the home screen, so sense itself is in 3d? I'm pretty sure that's gonna take some work to accomplish. Plus source code etc. Not likely gonna see that happening, I wouldn't hold my breath.

true, but would be nice.............when people see my phone and say, "oh, you have the 3D phone? let me see it"........the first thing they see is the homescreen that isn't in 3D, would be nice instead of having to fire up The Green Hornet or go to the 3D Gallery pics........maybe I'm asking for too much.
Spb shell has 3D (it's still experimental) battery drainer and only 3D in landscape... But still it's kinda nice.. altho I wouldn't keep as my homescreen...

LG Optimus 3D -which is Android based- has its own 'Media Launcher' in real 3D and it's awesome.
I wouldn't count on it, since the screen only does 3D in landscape mode.
Most people aren't looking for a launcher that just runs in landscape mode.
Now a 3D dock mode would be pretty cool, but then again, I think there's isn't much use for it and it will kill the battery pretty quickly, but being in a dock, power usually isn't an issue
As nice as it would look (initially) It would rinse your battery in double time, maybe even triple time, plus your eyeballs would probably fall out with pain.
For a little bit of eyecandy for a short duration then yes, but I can't see anyone developing this, and as people have said, without source code it would mean building it up from scratch, like i said i can't see anyone doing that.
I know what you mean tho Would look cool, just not practical.
Well, I use the 3500mah battery so no issue there.
