ive only noticed this a couple times, but its going to start getting annoying if it is a reoccurring thing. I wanted to know if anybody else is having these issues.
Its normally just one tiny, maybe finger sized spot, that does not recognize a touch. I was able to confirm using multitouch visualizer that it worked everywhere except this one spot. After turning my screen off and then back on, it went away.
i have a launch day evo 3d without the ota.
Where is it on your 3D? I notice about 3/4 of an inch from the top left corner of the screen there's a spot that is unresponsive at times...
I got some issue just yesterday. Mine is where the letters e and r when u pull out the keyboard. Reboot cleared it up. Very weird...

I had it to today, keyboard area. My guess is its somethingti do with temp root and kernel. Reboot fixed it...

i just returned my old 3Evo because the notification bar area would stop recognizing touch randomly and it became annoying i battery pulled and factory reset the device and it still did it, the new device so far so good
Mine too. Couple times now... Different areas different times. Screen off then on fixed it.
Sent from my HTC Evo 3D.
So has everybody here tried temp root? I have, not sure if it was temp rooted when I was having issues though.
By the way, the two times it happened so far one was top middle, the other was bottom middle on my keyboard.
I was not and have not used temp root.
Sent from my HTC Evo 3D.
So is everybody having these issues? I'm pre ota and it seems even more prevalent now.
I'm starting to wonder it it's hardware or software, if it's software I can deal with it until it's fixed but if it's hardware then I need to get a replacement. It's good to know I'm not the only one though.
I wonder if updating to the newest firmware would help. The reason i never did it was for rooting issues but it doesn't seem the update closed any exploits
it has only happened to me twice in 3 weeks I have had the phone, and second time was today. It was aroud e and r on the keyboard it kept on recognizing the shift key everytime I would hti a key in that area.
I locked it and unlocked it and it worked fine again. It seems like a software glitch to me.

what firmware are you on? im trying to figure out if maybe the update fixed it.
Do any of you guys with this issue have screen filter installed? It was messing with my phone some like that, when I had it.
You may want to try it without Screen Filter and see if it persists.

i have the same issue with my 3d... i either lose the top part or around the n key on the keyboard
It happens to me sometimes at the top left corner of the screen. No modifications done to phone.

Happens to me alot. Usually on my space bar. I would have to press it on the left corner for it to work, if I press it in the center its unresponsive. I also noticed this when in Google sometimes it doesn't allow me to search by clicking the magnify class. I have to press enter to search.
Only clears up when I reboot
Space bar for me too. Screen filter not installed, screen lock then unlock fixes it.

I do not have any screen protector
A band of my screen is unresponsive
If you open the Gmail app, it is the fourth email down
In landscape mode with Gingerbread keyboard, the letters F and C are affected
If I touch a section of the screen by the speaker and light sensor, not on the screen itself, the phone goes HAYWIRE.... literally starts pressing keys all on it's own, randomly. Sometimes holds keys down until I touch another part of the screen. Sometimes even hits the HOME softkey!
I think my phone is possessed.
For those who know a thing or two about phones........ would you believe this to be a HARDWARE or SOFTWARE issue? I'm planning on doing the 4.1.83 jump this weekend when I have some free time, hoping that will fix it, but if it doesn't, time for a new phone it looks like! Would like to know if this issue is a hardware issue and to save myself some hours screwing around with it if I should just head over to AT&T first....
Thanks in advance!
just realized I've got a unresponsive area on my screen as well. My unresponsive area is where the top, first of four, rows are on the home screen. doesn't matter if I'm looking at the home screen or pressing on that area within an app.
1.83 + root + sideloading + greyblur
** edit ** never mind... it magically started working. don't know why/how.
Updated to 4.1.83 and the screen is still screwed..... was so close to getting this thing perfect!!! Oh well, off to AT&T after flashing back to factory now....
EDIT - Okay, I guess not.... called the AT&T store to find out what I needed to bring with me to exchange, they don't do exchanges on devices older than 30 days - told me to call the repair center without telling me the Atrix isn't one of the phones the repair center has to exchange, so called warranty and got a refurbished Atrix on the way to me on Monday! What a hassle, but hopefully this will all be resolved soon....
I have this exact problem but when I updated to 1.83 it rarely happens to me now but before when I updated to 1.57 it was just like what you said... my phone was being possessed, lol.... anyway what I did was first, flashed sbf 1.26... updated via OTA to 1.83 then root using gingerbreak...before I installed GingerBlur 3.1
It still happens once in a while but its so much better now than before... also, if you have alot of widgets on your homescreens you might want to romove some..... dunno if that would help you but it did to me, hope this helps

I have a bunch of widgets on my homescreen, but that wasn't the issue - the issue was the screen itself.... Got a new one through warranty, TiBU on the old phone, went through the update process up to 4.1.83, restored from TiBU, and I'm back to having a working phone without any loss of response from the screen!
Every so often (apparently at random as far as I can tell) I don't get the screen unlock ring when I take the Flyer out of standby - from a blank screen. The normal home screen just pops up. A soft reset fixes the issues but I hoping to find the cause. Anyone with any ideas?

Are you running a rooted rom? I don't have an answer but when I was running some roms for my Evo 4g we used to get that from time to time. I know it was something to do with the gfx drivers not being compatable for the Evo 4g. We could shut the screen on and off a few times and then it would come back.

Thanks, but no I am still on the stock rom (not for long though)!
For about 4 days now my screen has been acting up and giving me quite the annoyance. It initially started while i was on Deck's "gbsense-e3d-deck [1.0]" ROM. I wiped cache and dalvik then re flashed the ROM twice but the screen kept malfunctioning. I was forced to perform a factory reset and re flash a new downloaded file of the same ROM which fixed nothing. I wanted to see if it was a ROM specific issue so i flashed CyanogenMod 7 VALPHA3 and the issue was still present but to a much less annoying degree. Now it seems as if my device doesnt register touch around the midsection. That makes me unable to select anything that may be in that area. I have tried multiple multitouch apps and testers to "diagnose" what is going on with my touch screen, but all i can gather is that my screen might be ****ed. The phone works flawlessly excluding the touch screen's unresponsive zone, so i don't know whether it's a hardware or software issue. Any insight concerning this matter is welcomed, Thanks.
I have attached a video demonstrating my screen while using the app "multitouch paint"

Could it be a ground issue? Try holding the phone in your hand and see if it still does it. I remember my OG Evo having a similar problem when I laid it on something non conductive.

It occurs both while in hand or on a surface. An example is if i pull down the notification bar, depending what hits the affected zone, i'm unable to select it. I used SBM quite often and now when drawing for example a straight line up it would look like this _____________ __________ (vertically of course) the gap being my speculated affected area but much wider.

Is it possible that both of the roms you tested are using the same kernel? I would swap out the kernel with the stock one just in case. At least it'll rule it out lol.

I'd take it one step further and return completely to stock, if it STILL does it, then I would guess it's a problem with the digitizer and you would either have to buy a replacement one, or take it to Sprint. If you don't have TEP then HTC's warranty should suffice.
Possibly related?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1267124
It looks similar to this issue, but you are getting it with a single touch instead of with a multitouch. I get EXACTLY the same thing if I use a second tap while drawing a line. Try "multitouch visualizer 2" from the market and see if it registers one tap that is on all the time or if you can actually get the full 4 touches at once. I doubt it will be insighful, but it can't hurt--and if you have an "always on" (perhaps in the button area below the screen) then you know the digitizer is bad.
If it is the same issue, try restarting and give it time. Mine has gone from happening often to happening about 1% of the time. It is software and can be "corrected" by either time or a restart. It is WORST on the first boot after flashing something (even JUST a stock kernel). I have absolutely no idea why.
Good luck. I hate this junk. My Evo 4G never had this sort of glitchy garbage, but, whatever it is, it is likely due to HTC's glitchy kernel!

I would also like to know whats going on.. I have two evo's 3d and my friend was telling me that he is having issue with the touchscreen he is still on stock... and my was rooted the same day I got it and has no issues.. He mentioned that the same area mentioned in this thread is the are affected in his phone... could this be cause by the screen digitizer??
Ignore this... Thought I found what my issue was... But wasn't the case
I had the same problem but it only seemed to be in one horizontal strip of my screen. Im not sure what caused it maybe its from me dropping it or what. I also did try to flash other roms and kernals but still no fix so i said to myself im going to put it back to stock and take it to sprint. There they looked it for about 2 minutes and deemed it was a hardware issue. The guy asked if i had a warranty. Two days later i received a refurbished phone.
So in all revert it back to stock... search on htcevohacks . com
Take it back to sprint and show them your problem. They should also deem it as a hardware issue and send you a replacement

What's up Xda? I have a question the top of my EVOLTE's screen is messing up. Just randomly right now. What I mean by messing up is that my notification bar becomes non responsive. At times it'll even slightly drop down maybe a quarter of the way down the screen without me touching it at all. Keep in mind it's just randomly right now not while I'm running certain apps or anything just random.
I am running cm10 stable and I did the pointer location grid and it showed me that no response was being read in that area.
Now keep in mind evolte is in prestine condition. No water damage or drops at all this just started out of nowhere. Anyone else having issues? If so did you do anything to solve it?
I'm gonna take it to sprint tomorrow, but gotta restore it back to factory first. I was just hoping there was another way. My sprint store reps and techs don't seem to know anything. They just give u a new one.
I also ran into this problem with my old evo 4g, but there was rain involved with that.

I am having the same problem!!!!! i thought it was just me, my notification bar doesnt respond, when I try to touch anything at the top, it doesnt respond, when I lock the screen, I could touch the screen and the ring will not move. I have searched the forums for a reason and havent been able to seen anyone with the same issue that resolved it..other than taking it back to the sprint store and getting another phone...I am rooted too, so I am concerned about returning the phone and having an issue, any suggestions??

I don't recommended taking it to the sprint store running cm10 I would flash a stock ROM first. Idk about yours, but back in the day I took my og evo tho the sprint store and they just handed it back to me because my boot animation was different.
As far as my screen issue goes I think it had something to do with an app I had. I had the GBA emulator and whenever it was running it kept the icon on the notification bar. Once I uninstalled it I haven't had the problem since. Still its only been about 19hrs, but still nothing. Hopefully it doesn't happen anymore because sprint in my area sucks.

Definitely sounds like a bad digitizer
This just started happening to me a couple of days ago! I'm running MeanROM, i have the screen randomly hitting buttons or not responding but if I turn the screen off/on it responds properly for a few minutes or so before screwing up again. I'm going to try doing a fresh install now.
Edit:
So, I did a fresh install of Stock with Goodies and installed updated Liberty kernel and haven't had any issues for the past 24 hours.
The same thing happened with my OG evo. Dealt with it for over a year until o got this phone. I hope it doesn't do the same thing.

So you got a replacement phone, and it's doing the same thing? If so , maybe its an app you are downloading. I never heard of this problem, and it's odd that it would happen to you 2 times in a row, if that's the case

Couldn't have said it better. I also haven't had any problems with my phone (yet). By the way, my aunt just got a Note 5 and has had countless problems with it (even more than what people have reported here). First, her phone would lock up completely randomly. Then, she got a replacement and had issues with the speakers on her phone. The problems just kept coming. She now has switched to this phone and is way happier with it.

That is not encouraging, considering these two phones are essentially exactly the same device lol.
Thanks for the suggestion on it being on of my apps......I Uninstalled "easy unrar, unzip & zip" problem seems to have gone away.....it was either that or dropbox I Uninstalled both at the same time and haven't had the problem, gonna give it another day or 2 without a reboot and attribute it to that app....
Back to the drawing board the issue just happened to come back right after that post. ......I guess I'll deal with the occasional restart and hopefully when we finally get 6.0 the problem won't come back
Having the exact same issue with my new Verizon Galaxy S6 Edge+ (received phone Dec 29) . And as the OP states, a restart temporarily fixes the issue. In addition, this is for sure a software related problem because I can rotate the phone on it's side but still will be unable to select the menu in top left corner. Rotate back vertical, not able to select menu in top left corner but can select the menu in top right corner (if there is one for the app). Sometimes I have been able to close the app, reopen and the problem is temporarily fixed.
I'm surprised this issue hasn't happened to too many other people......especially since it happened in both phones Verizon has given me, I would assume it's a wide range issue for a lot of users
Wow that's strange nothing wrong with mine except this crappy battery life. A 3700mah battery like the droid turbo 2 should be in order
Having the same issue here for a few weeks now. A reboot fixes it temporarily. I have been trying to pinpoint an app but no luck yet. It seems random.
