Erm..i have done some reading regarding flashing Lite'ning Rom, however there's one thing remains unclear to me....
i understand that Lite'ning Rom is rooted and rooting is not necessary when flashing, and flashing a rom that comes with a kernel will automatically change the kernel of my phone....<- correct me if im wrong
Here comes the noob question (my first android phone =p) :
Does this means i can just flash Lite'ning Rom using odin without doing anything (like flashing kernel/rooting) the moment i unbox sgs2 ?
[A Yes or No answer would be sufficient , if there's any other advice is welcome]
thank you...
Yes, just flash Lite'ning Rom and your phone is rooted and you have the Superuser along with it so you can screw up your phone, like I did several times ;-)

(had this question as well sometime ago, SGS2 is my first android too.. was amazed by the ease of using custom ROM's! Btw... welcome in Android-world! )
You can flash to Lite'ning ROM 1.5 no problem. The only issue you'll notice is that when the phone boots, you'll have a yellow triangle on the boot screen. This happens when you Odin/Heimdall flash a custom kernel.
There are a couple of ways to get rid of the triangle, but the easiest is to use a jig. You can get these fairly cheaply through eBay, and it's simply a micro-USB connector with a 301Kohm resistor between two of the pins. You turn off your phone, plug this is, and bye bye triangle.

Hi guys. I am new to the android scene and right now i want to root my phone because of battery draining. My question is,can i root using chainfire's method because it said there that he only rooted with KDD. I have KE7 (GINGERBREAD.XWKE7).
That method is dead read

FWIW you can also root by flashing a rooted firmware, like VillainROM or Lite'ning, with Odin/Heimdall.
(Odin is more tried and tested but only runs on Windows. Heimdall also works though and is multiplatform - I use it on Linux.)
Thanks for the reply. My english is not that perfect and i didnt know what superceded meant hehe. Flashing a rom with included root sounds great. Btw can i flash litening when i have ke7? Because it didnt specify in the thread what kernel you need.

Thanks! Just rooted my stock phone and boy was that fast. Now i have another problem lol. I can't open market because i can't connect my google account. It says something like cannot connect to server, might be a problem with your network bla bla. I read that factory reseting the phone might make it work, but my question is,would resetting the phone remove superuser and that other app? (I think it was CMW)
Up /10chars
did you use a cusom rom?? at the moment its better to just root your device as all the roms are being constantly developed and bugs and eroors being fixed.. if you use a custom rom you will end up flashing your device quite often.. just my thoughts
Yes i rooted my phone only. But i need to know if resetting my phone would remove superuser and cwm not the root itself.
i have rooted mine and i dont get that problem... which rom did you use.. and yeah factory reset will remove those
hello all,
Before I being, i searched a bit in this forum and in web. But the questions i have still are not answered.
I on KE2 stock ROM. i have an unbranded SGSII. I have rooted using steps mentioned here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
I want to install any of the custom Roms or the newer ROMS mainly because the battery usage sucks. with some hour music and calls battery get drained easily.
I dont mind updating to latest stock ROM also as long as it solves the problem.
Kies dose not offer me an upgrade and its also grayed out for some reason
Here is my SGSII specs
Code:
Product Code: GT-I9100LKADBT (From RegEdit)
PDA: I9100XWKE2
Phone: I9100XXKDJ
CSC: I9100OXXKE2
Baseband: I9100XXKDJ
If I have some problem, I want to revert back to Stock rom before giving it to Samsung. I have also ordered a USB Jig. It should be on the way now. So i can reset the counter as well.
Before flashing, I want to know what all i should do. Is it just fine If i flash the firmware file? Also in Samfirmware i see something called pit files.
can anyone help me in flashing the correct rom?
thank you
All Custom ROM's give detailed installation instructions in the first couple of posts.
For what it's worth, having tried a number of different ROM's, VillainRom 1.4 has the best battery for me. 2 days with moderate use.
+ Villian rom but read and understand the instructions before you start .
jje
Cognition S2 is a good rom, full instructions for flashing.
If you look in the android development section, theres also a thread with all stock firmwares, kernals and tutorials for flashing
thank you all.
I was wondering about how to revert back in case of some problem. Also do I need to take care something about the baseband etc?
I am kind of new so thats what makes me tensed! I dont want to screw up the mobile.
Don't worry, once you have USB jib, you can reset Odin flash counter and this is a safe way to rescue you in case of brick.
In terms of baseband, ke4 or kf2 are the best ones. Kf2 kernel + kf2 base band is a good combination. You can try many ones and choose by yourself.
On xda, there are all stock firmware to rollback if needed.
Take a look at the stock rom and branded roms post in Dev section find your phone and download a copy of the rom.
That can be flashed back via Odin to original state wiping any root and stock roms .

How about ROM Manager ? i read that It can install ROMS over air
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-koushikdutta-rommanager-nptD.aspx
Don't use that as far as know. My kernel wasn't supported and it took me days before my recovery mode was working as I wanted. Maybe it works with other kernels, but with my bad experience thus far I don't install that again.

Installing rom manager is not an issue... Very few custom rom are compatible with this. Afaik Cognition rom is one of them.

You think I can install ROMS with this? no more Odin?
No this is a little bit more complicated. You need a rom compatible with this like cognition seemed to add. The main idea is to have a rom compatible with rom manager and this will allow you to change to another rom compatible with this. Unfortunately, there are not so many custom rom... Perhaps sicopat's one?
I justed wanted to say that rom manager is not dangerous to install and even to launch.
OK Thank you,
But I am still confused If i need to update the modem etc. Let me do some more search
You can upgrade modem version by Odin flash mode separately to the rest.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131950
Just download a modem.bin file or gets it from a complete firmware by unzip.
Put modem.bin into phone area of Odin and start accordingly of normal flash processing.
Thanks bgn9000
MY whole worry is whether to update modem or not. I dont want to mess with my phone as i think there is no downgrade.
Looks like I have to invest more time in understanding this flashing
I hope no one gets too upset but the only way i think i will find an answer is to ask..... here goes:
I have a vodafone australia i9100t:
kernel 2.6.35.7-i9100tdukf4-cl331615
[email protected]#2
gingerbread.dukf
i flashed a rooted kernel, supercurio_3 so i had root access. now i have the following:
Kernel 2.6.35.7-I9100xwkdd-cl161513
[email protected] #voodoo
So what i am wanting to know is...... If i want to put a rom on, or have keis update {very slow in aussie} or even a newer version of factory via odin - what is the latest.... how do i easily get cwm and why does there appear to be so many versions of how too's on the sgs2 section? theres really nothing wrong with my phone but i would like it to be up to date but mine is clearly not. and if i want to use a rom then i would like to know how to do that easier. using odin isnt the problem dont get me wrong, thats the easy part.... the confusing part is re-flashing factory kernels after rooting? whats that about, and where did the guide go... i was sure there used to be one. if im asking in the wrong place have a mod take it down but thats the state of the forum..... where do you ask?
Oh last of all from what i find the I9100t can be flashed no dramas with a rom... is that correct?
Thanks for all help
Normally rooted moded kernels come with CWM recovery , i don't know if supercurio_3 comes with , you can try power off phne, then Hold Volume up + Power + home, if you boot into CWM recovery you are done , you can flash any rom. If no CWM just flash CF root kernel .
Rooting and flashing mods on SGS2 is super easy.
My first day i got SGS2
1. flashed CF root kernel with odin.
2. Got into CWM recovery flashed ROM. Done.
Use kies only if you want to stay on pure stock, pointless in my opinion.
Supercutio does not come with cwm. What firmware should i use? Mine is old.... Very old for this phone

Hey guys, i know its been done and all that, its just that i want to ask a few questions. The yellow triangle thing has appeared after putting the lightning rom 6.1 on my S2. Ive had a lookup on the tut about this, but am confused.
By putting lightning 6.1 kh3 on my phone, as it has ninphetamines kernal in it already, does that mean i have to flash the kernal again?
It says until i get a zimage, do i copy over just the zimage? or the files included.
does it say to flash the stock xxkg6 for any other erason, or does this kernal have to match my kernal, gosh im confused.
Also, what kernal is better, speedmod or niphetamine?
There has literally been dozens of threads on this subject yellow triangle search the forum and you will find your answer.

Yes, but are they all relevant, especially when you have to consider what stock you need and such. Plus, i would like some of the questions i asked answered, as the tut isn't clear in exact detail. So please, my question wasn't to know how to get rid of it, it was to ask the questions in my opening thread.

i dont know about litening pro and the kernel it comes with cause you flash that through odin but i can explain about when you flash a rom and comes with a kernel..
when you flash a rom you get the kernel with it...now it does not matter if your KG, KI3, or whatever you can change the kernel after you flashed the rom..i always suggest to stick with the kernel that comes with the rom because thats what the dev recommends if you get me.
regarding removing the yellow triangle i say leave it since your rooted....cause even if you do remove it and say your handset gets faulty your still rooted and that means you lose your warranty....but anyway go into original dev forum and look up for chainfire thread and you will find more indetail in the opening page regarding the yellow triangle...
Cheers Matriak31, thanks.
Was only looking to get rid of it for appearance sake but it isn't much of a bother.

no problems mate..id leave it cause if you try and get rid is a long ass process and honestly not worth the trouble
Make our buy a usb jig to reset the custom rom counter and remove warning triangle.
Simple as,..... power off, insert, automatically boys into DL mode and resets, hold power button down until phone powers off, remove jig.
Done, last "evidence" is removed from phone. Useful if your phone needs to be returned for warranty.

So I followed this guide to root my phone, since I'm on Virgin Mobile in Canada.
My only question is how the heck do I install custom ROMs or Kernels to the phone? I honestly can not figure that out.
Are there any supported by this phone? I9100-M, and I keep getting the error of:
Code:
E: signature verification failed
no matter how much I try updating via CF-ROOT.
So you've flashed your CF Root kernel via Odin? Green light, good to go?
When you boot to recovery what's the version #? Which kernel/rom are you trying to flash?
The M is the same as the "International version", it just came with Bell/Virgin firmware and an M tacked onto the end of the model #; you're in the right section.

Trying to flash to? Or have at the moment? At the moment, booting to recovery gives me Android System Recovery 3e. The ROM I'm trying to flash is MIUI, Drunken Clam or MIUI based off CM9 though later on, if I don't like either, I was thinking I might flash a lighter ROM if they have worse battery life then the stock ROM.

That's the problem. That's the stock recovery, useless for flashing anything. I'm guessing you messed up the step to get rid of the yellow triangle and flashed a complete stock kernel back on rather than the zimage. As you've noticed you retain root, but don't have Clockwork Mod Recovery. You'll have to flash a kernel via Odin again. Good luck.

I'm still getting the same error even after reflashing it though, and Android System Recovery 3e is still showing up, even though I'm flashing it with the proper ROM...
I think you can try on some kernel other than CF-Root to achieve root. I had rooted my phone by flashing the speedmod kernel using odin. Then you can flash custom ROMs from the CWM recovery.
I went and installed the MIUI drunken clam since I re-rooted it and put on the insecure ROM on. I don't particularly like it, but I'm thinking either try something with a better battery life then stock (way better would be nice, I've got two batteries on the way for the phone, but no clue when they're showing up.) or simply go back to stock and start removing thing via Titanium Backup.
What would be the recommended ROM if you want the most out of your battery life? Are there anything I should watch out for on said ROM? Or what ROM would you recommend, personally? I've been looking for a good one that's nice enough for day to day, but not sickeningly sweet or something.
Going to a non-Samsung ROM can be a big jump. Especially considering that the MIUI you flashed is based on CM9 which is still "experimental", not all phone functionality has been successfully ported yet.
I'd recommend a Samsung based ROM first; which one? Not sure, I haven't been on a Samsung based ROM for a few months. I preferred lighter weight ROMs; the GingerMOD was good and is similar to an AOSP based ROM. People seem happy with Hyperdroid as well; it's not lightweight, but is a great ROM from what I've heard.
Stock to CM9/AOSP/MIUI is a big jump, and can be unforgiving at times, you have to be familiar with getting yourself out of trouble. All of the Samsung ICS leaked ROMs are also buggy as hell at the moment.
