Return your 3VO.. why? - HTC EVO 3D

Just lookin around, I see a lot of you will return your evo3d if the devs or HTC don't get s off before your 30 day return. Idk why you'd return in it in the first place, I guess for ROMs and recoveries and extra mods. But we got temp root already and the most up to date Rom with any s off device out there is what we have stock, with weaker processor. So if you guys are really picky just gettin a recovery or extra mods, then go. I'm happy with temp root and gettin my root apps. But these are just my thoughts

So, you posted in a thread that was ALREADY talking about this, to reference THIS new thread? SMH...

Its simple I make custom ROMs that's what I do. If I can't do it on this device I want one that I can.

This is so true I see people saying they're missing they old evos cuz of root and stuff, but why u need it back? To have the Kingdom ROM on.it? U got the original one on the 3d so.is no.need to return it

If anyone is going to make use of his custom roms, they need a flashable device too.

Temp root doesn't work properly: plain and simple. Very few apps actually work under temp root. I have no plans to return my phone but temp root is a non-solution. It's only a stepping stone for devs.

What phone will you get? Unless you're going back to the EVO or switching carriers it seems that the E3D will be rooted before either the SGS2 or Photon are released, the only two phones on Sprint comparable to the E3D.
As far as dev support: once its rooted we will have CM7,8, etc and likely MIUI as long as someone wants to port it over (I'm sure there will be no shortage of people willing to do so). Custom Sense ROMs are a dime a dozen, most are just skinned and don't offer anything new other than having few apps removed/added and maybe a new kernel- there will always be people to put these out. As for the Sense ROMs that are heavily modded and optimized, (I won't name names but they are amongst the most popular in the EVO thread), some of those devs are waiting for root to buy the E3D while others already have them and are holding out for root. We'll have plenty of support either way.

Very true. But I'm confident in all these devs working there butts offs

I want CM. I line it better than anything else out there. I paid for my phone with my hard earned money....I should be able to run CM on it if I want. If HTC doesn't make a phone that will allow me to do that then I will find one that will.
This EVO 3d is way more buggy than any nightly cm7 ROM I ever ran on my EVO. I really regret jumping the gun and selling my EVO. Now I'm going to have to buy another one unlocked and ride out my old contract for another year and then switch to t mobile. Hopefully then i can vet some 4g inside a building.

And in your case, I'd agree. I'm just a user. This is a basic customer, with a bit of rooting knowledge

I would be forced to wait for HTC's next device that comes unlocked. .
Custom ROMs being a dime a dozen is what makes the EVO so popular here on XDA. What I offered may have been useless to you but despite what you think was still very popular as is my Xoom ROM.
ROM development has different people who do different things. We have kernel writers, base ROM makers, and then we have themers. It took all of use to make the EVO what it is today. You don't see Myn writing his own custom kernel for example. We all worked together as a team its not one single person.

Root will come our way. People just need to learn how to be patient and let the devs take their time. There were people that didn't even believe temp root was possible, but look at it now. All I know is that Root will happen one way or another. We have very knowledgeable devs in our community.

Sorry, the second part of my post was not directed at you. I only said it because I have seen people mention that developers are not going to wait around for te E3D to be unlocked. All I meant was that even if some don't, there will always be people around and able to accomplish much of the same things we had on the EVO. Didn't mean to offend though I can see how I may come across that way.

I want s-off for many reasons. Some of you are too dense understand the significance of nand write access so I will only offer my two biggest reasons:
1) I OWN the device. I don't rent or lease the device and my employer did not supply me with any phone(s) nor do they pay my phone bill. It's MY device, I want admin access to MY device.
2) HTC Sense makes me want to friggin vomit. Sense 3.0 is a great improvement but it's still the bloated cow that Sense is and will always be.
edit- I've been running some flavor of CM since I had my Heroc and I must add, in all sincerity, GB on this EVO 3D has more bugs and has been a bigger pain in the butt than any RC or final version of CM. I've actually had a couple random reboots in the last week.. ON STOCK SOFTWARE!!! Not acceptable, imo. But that's Sense for ya.

GSM Evo Themes

Does anyone know if there are a list of custom themes from the themes and apps forum that are compatible with the gsm roms
I would like to know that too, it sucks that there is so little development going on for the GSM version.
I can't agree with you more. Never been on such a quiet section before. It is so dead. I feel that it won't get much better as the phone seems to be just a little outdated already. Luckily the stock Rom is good enough for my personal usage. I still love this phone though. Just the features and the way it feels/built is simply awesome.

OMG really? That makes me so sad, I was hoping it would pick up after an UK launch..
I don't understand what that means about the kernel? What difference does that make?
This phone is quite unknown (sadly)...there is little to no advertising for it. Everyone who saw my evo 3d said "wow, your phone is awesome! Which one is it? I've never seen it before!" If more people knew about it's existance, we would probably have more devs..
The bright side: because of it being unknown, It's a special device. Unlike the iPhone... Everybody knows and a lot of people have the iPhone. I like people asking me to see my phone, hold my phone, make pics with my phone, play a 3D game with it, and so on ;p.

True, that is good. However I still rather have more development, like cyanogenmod which is there for cmda now but not for gsm
As much as I love sense, I just like a standard AOSP look. Wanting to root it once those custom kernels come out and install another Rom. Want to block all those unnecessary ads with a custom host file as well. Removal of some bloatware would be a plus. I'm in no rush though as long as it comes. With our specs, the phone can last us another year

I don't mind too much. I'd rather wait until everything is more stable anyway. Perhaps I'm spoiled coming off a Captivate, but with that phone, if I screwed up, it was super easy to go back to stock, not to mention the thing practically rooted and unlocked itself. Ton of ROMs, Kernels, Radios, etc.
Since I'm not especially knowledgable about flashing, customer kernels, etc. I'd rather wait a while anyway until there's a lot of solid documentation. It's getting there, but I'd imagine once the custom Kernels come out is when the real fun begins.

why no rom developers 4 the amaze?

Just wondering if were gonna be getting more devs to cook up some roms for this phone.. I use to have a sensation and that forum is full of devs. Anyone devs cooking roms?... I would like cyanogen, I love me some aosp.
The development is picking up and we already have three devs and someone making a theme. Not to mention faux is putting together a custom kernel. Be patient It's only been a month.

Sure is. Better safe than sorry.
I've been wanting to get into development for a while, but since I've had a Vibrant since before it was popular, and they have fallen out of style, it wasn't the device I wanted to really work with.
That said, I hope to be buying an Amaze today, and if I can figure out a good starting point(after I get comfortable with the differences in the flashing process), I'd be interested in learning.
The biggest appeal of the Amaze is that it is a BEAST. Hardware wise this thing will hold its own for a long time to come, should be fully capable of running whatever the future throws at it. I noticed a big part of development is the popularity of the device, this phone is new, and it is obviously popular.. it will get plenty of development I'm sure, just be patient!
Edit: One of the most important things I see about the amaze(development wise), developers won't have to work around a lack of features like they did the Vibrant. Color-fixes, enabling a notification light, getting gps to work-- there were tons of things they had to try to overcome rather than just make a solid, stable, feature filled rom. The amaze doesn't sound like it will have these issues.
Patience my friend. We just built the Dojo, and we're now filling it with some wicked devs. The only thing X isn't working on is a froyo ROM... which I am not above requesting just to see if anything can rattle the guy
Everything is good, we have Revolution.
Lacking S-OFF doesn't help bring devs into a device.

Switching to T-Mobile, thinking about picking up the Amaze 4G

I have a NS4G, and am switching from Sprint so I'll need a new phone. I'm looking into either the Amaze 4G, Sensation, or Galaxy S II. I want a phone that has a good developer community, as the two previous phones I had were fairly active in that regard.
I saw that the Amaze 4G Dev forum is looking like all the roms are Sense based. Is this an temporary thing or is the dev support just not there? (Or is the phone locked down enough to make it difficult?)
Anyway I would greatly appreciate some I put on this!

Hello, I am new to the forum but do have the HTC Amaze 4G. While HTC does provide the tools for unlocking the bootloader, they do not allow for S-OFF (Security OFF). And it is because of this (for the most part) that developing for the HTC Amaze is limited ATM.

Temp - hopefully.
Dev support - we only have one developer that actually has the phone. To top it off he's only 16 and still in high school.
We have the source but not the entire kernel source (thanks to HTC and their technicalities)
Still don't have s-off so we can't flash kernels via recovery thus makes flashing roms that much more difficult.
So if you want a good phone to use as a daily driver and don't care about tweaking and boosting... this is the phone for you!
If you immediately want fully working ICS, Sense 3.5, CM9, AOSP, etc then go with another device.
Do we see this happening in the future? If more developers were to pickup the device then maybe. But not anytime soon.
Bottom line if you want a device that has a HUGE selection of roms that you can do pretty much anything with... this isn't the phone for you. Not yet anyway.
Anyone know if there's any word on whether S-Off is coming? I thought I heard HTC announcing the days of S-On being forced are over.
I'd rather get the better phone. Hope that dev support comes.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
Agreed with Binary.
From what you've posted this doesn't sound like the phone that will suit you. However, in the long-run it could suit you better maybe?
I doubt this forum will ever pick up. Most people who wanted a phone like this bought the sensation, and this phone is not a big enough of an upgrade from that. So most will just wait till the next gen.
Thanks for the responses. I think I am going to go with the Amaze after all, and deal with Sense. Apparently it'll get ICS at some point regardless, which will be nice. I am pretty good with Linux so I might work on my own development if I get some free time (going back to college to finish up my bachelors degree so I'm not so sure about that part).

I definitely agree. Everyone that I know that bought this phone after having the Sensation ended up having buyers remorse. The phones seem very similiar to eachother and we all expected them to be pretty much the same. However we later found out that they are nothing alike on the inside. Different partitions, different software, different securities, etc. This phone is actually kind of a PITA for developers despite how HTC claims to be "developer friendly" and all that other nonsense.
If you stick with the Amaze then try beast, its pretty damn close to AOSP, or at least as close as we can have for now

This is the first phone where I had to use the htc unlocking method and am SHOCKED that is not as open as they made it out to be. Keeping s on? What the hell was the point then? I can see where it would benefit developers, but as far as supporting xda type communities, its an epic fail while giving us false hope in all those press releases how they "heard" the enthusiast community and wanted to be more open.

Notification Dropdown Quick Settings Tab

First I want to thank all the crew working on the Super JELLY ROM. Your attention to detail is making this the best ROM I've ever used and I've used quite a few.
I have a question to throw out to whoever has the answer. One of the things I miss most with my update to Jelly Bean is the Quick settings tab in the notification dropdown window.
Are Quick Settings just gone forever with JB, or will there be a Mod for it someday?
I know Super JELLY has something like it as an option is settings, but I just liked the old school one.
From what I've read, the code that allowed enabling that has been removed by Google/Android.
Edit: wait, maybe HTC removed it. I don't use sense, but on AOSP, I have the same toggles that have existed since froyo (or maybe it was GB, I forgot). Just abandon sense, android is much better on the AOSP side.

Truth...
Look man, the evo is a great phone. However, if you plan on having a broad source for development forget about it. This phone is and has been coming up short with custom offerings. Sorry. Because I once loved this phone, but there is nothing here happening for it.
HTC removed them. Started with our last OTA actually as we saw the ATT OneX have quick settings in their OTA, and then when it came to the EVO getting theirs it was removed... Personally thought that this was a sprint thing since other One series had it but now with the JB OTA rolling to all devices now it shows it was an HTC decision as its now gone from all of them...
Maybe they have something in the works for that area, or there are other plans in place for something else completely new?...

CM10.1, MIUI w/4g, SlimRom Official, JB kernels w/ active governors, updates from DEVS consistently, mostly regarding AOSP roms.. but thats just a few..Sorry if what I wrote as opinion bothered you or anyone else. Simply stating what is true, this device has dated AOSP roms, and I was informing the user. Apologies..However, you wont have to hear my opinions stated anymore, I bought a GS3 to get some solid custom roms. See ya!
CM10.1 is here maybe you should look before posting it doesn't exist......and JB kernels will come once source is out... Which will be pretty soon, so dunno what's the disconnect there...do you not know that to build true custom kernels you need source? sgs3 got JB before the evo so naturally they'll have custom kernels before it too...

I couldn't deal with the 'plastic' overall feeling with the GS3 but that's just me. Overall the development for the EVO LTE is phenomenal. Now with CM10.1 running almost perfect, I could never imagine giving up my cell.

Every HTC phone I've owned had an aluminum chassis that gave it a bit more heft. They have a very solid and reliable feeling to them. My phones have survived being dropped from all sorts of heights and all types of conditions. My father once dropped his HTC Touch Pro in discarded motor oil and the phone still to this day powers on and works. He has yet to upgrade it because it's only his work phone and he claims it's the most reliable phone he has ever owned.
I've owned the gs3 before I bought this EVO and I have to say. Yes there is more development there, but overall its all the same ****, we have devs working hard for us just like they have devs working hard for them over at the gs3 forums. we have great roms over here for us EVO users. My only real issue is with custom roms (cm based) is my Google nav not working at all but personally its not a big deal, I'm fine with sense, I can get telenav to work there.
I do wish we had miui (which I believe someone is working on, could be mistaken).

You mean like this?
So the quick settings are available in Viper4g 3.0.0 I believe they are the only JB Rom that has them thus far.

Is development winding down for our device?

Seems like a big time slow down on developing for this phone.
Is this simply due to the One?
I couldn't imagine dropping another 500 bucks on a phone so far away from my discount time.

Due simply to the One? No. MeanBean has been dead for a while. Viper appears to have been complete since February. CM10.1 is still in the works. Stock is still being worked on. I'm sure the Sense 5 Port and others aren't just being set aside to never be touched again. I could be wrong about that though.

Could be wrong but have to agree, sense 5 may take a little while longer to get rolling, but there other roms that just dropped. Im a big supporter of utkaar99's work here. If you like sense try his HatkaLTE or his Rage ROM. If you like AOSP ,take a look at jaimeg's threads. Still some stuff happening here just a little slow right now. As far as the One, its true we're loosing some folks to that forum, but thats how it works here at xda. I mysrlf was going to get a One or the samsung 4 but decided to hold, mainly just to see how long this forum will last. Hope its like the Heroc was, even in low activity it still pushed on. Same with the Evo4G, still hangin in there 3D is the same, still going strong. We may pick up some of theirs in the future hopefully. Just gotta hang tough.

It isn't like the days of the original evo. I always had a new Rom to play with and so I wait patiently 4 the next big rom release. I refuse to use a Rom that doesn't have full functionalities. I need my phone to just work so I am staying on mean bean until something worthy replaces it. I do love viper Rom as well.

I know viper is working on something that will allow mods and roms for the one on other carriers to work on the Sprint variant and vice versa. One development is about to explode. That said we still have some quality roms here in lte land. If you have the time, you can learn to develop and theme.

Good post man.... I would hate to see all development stop for this phone but it won't, it will slow down though.. I think everyone was so used to getting different roms and constant updates to feed the addiction... What they have done is awesome and the part about the roms being complete is true, I can't think of much that can be done with viper, been using it for a while and it's bad ass.. Just debating the One, not sure if I want to jump ship yet, it's fast and smooth, but it's not much better than this in my opinion.

Don't forget to hit the thanks button. When this phone came out there were still a lot of developers working on EVO 3D ROM's.

My husband just got the One (his upgrade from the EVO4G). The only features it has that I wish my 4GLTE had are the dual front speakers (the sound is beautiful!), the IR blaster (maybe not super useful, but can be used for triggering our DSLR), and the international SIM card slot.
The aluminum skin is also beautiful, but it's not going to tempt me to upgrade. It also doesn't have an SD slot, so it wouldn't hold all my MP3s.
I hope development doesn't die on this device. I plan on keeping it for quite a while longer.

I'd like to keep it for the 2 years like the ogevo. But I don't know if it will make it.

I keep wondering the same thing. Got another year to go before my upgrade, and definitely can't afford the one straight up. Was hoping when our sense5 update drops sometime this summer (hopefully) that the current favs like mean, viper, and superjelly would be brought up to date with it, but it doesn't seem that'll happen since those devs have moved on to the one or left HTC all together. Not saying new stuff won't drop then, but for now anything sense will be slow.

Actually, it DOES seem like that WILL happen. As I've said earlier that some of the progress on those ROM's have been completed. There's simply no more to do with them which is why there is no update. Just like the OTA from HTC even though they could be doing more.
I think in this new world of quickly progressing smartphones there are a couple of options for xda'ers. One, upgrade yearly to stay with the new device that gets all the attention.
The second option is the progression that this site fosters. Users learn and build their abilities to create by themselves. Many of the past leaders of EvoLTE have left a legacy of development here that can be built upon. Fortunately, the vast majority of the devs around here will gladly allow another person to take over the reigns and continue a build- or even make it thier own creation.
The site was named xdadevelopers. The purpose for the site is to allow users to learn to be developers. All the tools are here.

Something else to consider is that Android 5 (Key Lime) is on the horizon and may be announced at Google I/O in a couple of weeks. A major OS rev often stokes new inspiration for devs and hopefully we'll see ports of Key Lime ROMS to the EVO LTE (e.g. CM, Key Lime based Sense, etc.).
It ain't dead.
Just have to know where to look is all.. not all ROMs get posted on XDA
I'd much rather have more kernel development than rom personally. I'm learning more and more each day the true capability of the hardware and which software elements dampen it's potential. We have a huge hd screen and dual core I could really care less about the One and sense 5. Like someone else said it can't do much more than viper. I'm testing the AOSP waters for now and loving Slim Bean currently.

Just look in the development threads. There are still a lot of really great roms still being worked on.
Yes a few have left but many still have this phone and many more will probably pick it up second hand or now that it's becoming really cheap on sprint.
For ask those worried why don't you go and read a few how-tos and start doing your own thing.
I really hate these threads. They always happen and never produce something good. Just lame really.
