[Q] What to choose CM7 or Devoid - Optimus One, P500, V General

Here's how my phone is set up
Root: Gingerbreak v1.20
Rom: Devoid Froyo Final
Theme: SuperBlue V5
Kernel: Franco 18v
Recovery Image: AmonRa 2.2.x
I have heard much talk about CM7 and have done a bit of research but I have not come across a couple of questions and would hate to post questions in the Dev's thread when I can easily ask for advice here through my own thread
1. Do I absolutely need to have Clockworkmod's recovery, and if so, do I need to download Rom Manager (1. Ive used Rom Manager and it did not work for me, 2. I know of the flashable recovery image's and always manage to flash back to AmonRa)
2. I now know that I do not need to have any baseband's since Im not wanting to flash any Gingerbread rom's but am I missing anything, I need advice on that subject ?
3. Does CM7 have the power menu options like my superblue theme v5 has for devoid froyo final ?
4. In your opinion, which rom produces the best results ie...Neocore,Quadrant Scores (you get the picture)
5. I have a ****ty ass LG optimus T, there are so many higher grade phones typically G2x, the new HTC phone that tmobile has just started putting on the market (Dual Core processor-Snapdragon 1.2 GHZ)

You posted this in the wrong thread.
All of your questions could be answered by reading the threads that are already posted. most of your answers are on the first page of the threads. This tells me you didn't even take the time to read the first page. But enough of that...
My personal opinion is to use a cm7 based rom. It is faster than the original gingerbread based roms right now. Be sure to READ any bugs our issues that the rom may have before you install it and do some homework before posting.

Interesting post, but wrong section.
You should post it on General
But, on topic: devoid is good, but CM7 is worth it.

1) You need CWM for Rom manager to work, it won't work without it. It's generally recommended to use CWM since it supports newer installation methods than amonra
2) Don't need the new baseband for CM7
3) By powermenu do you mean reboot and reboot into recovery? If so, then yes. It also adds a new part to the settings menu, allowing you to change CPU speeds and governer, and tweak the interface.
4) Benchmark scores don't really reflect "real world" performance, your mileage will vary. CM7 and franco's 18.1 kernel is the fastest set up I have used, even on stock speeds
5) You get what you pay for in phones.
Edit: This thread should have been made in the general section. The development section is for development threads. If you aren't posting code, bug fixes, or bug reports then you are posting in the wrong section.

You know I thought I posted in General, but your not the first to say that, also which recovery image did you use ? Ive currently got AmonRa 2.2.x running, is Cyan's mod only going to work with the CWM's recovery ? Also what's with your kernel, I see that your running something Ive never seen before, Im using the latest-franco kernel v18.1

I'm on Devoid Final since I need bluetooth calling but if that is fixed, I would use CM7 in a heartbeat ( don't even mind the other bugs. I dont use my phone's cam and MoboPlayer can watch videos)
Oh and maybe you used ROM Manager when the phone wasn't supported yet. I was able to flash Clockwork Recovery just yesterday using ROM Manager...
I'm not sure about the power menu on CM7 since I didnt test it but that can be fixed with a theme. And ROM Manager can boot into Recovery without even touching the power button. I was on AmonRa until yesterday.

Yeah Ive used AmonRa's recovery image since G1, I was out of the loop for 2 years on the whole android development scene, so Im having to re-learn what I had once known, things have changed alot in the past 2 years

Mods please remove or move this thread to proper section

[Q]another new fascinate owner

ok so i've went through the threads here and pretty much got a handle on what's what but some are little outdated. though since i'm new, i've already applied the ED01 froyo OTA update from stock as soon as i opened it up and a lot of the stuff here are applied to older firmwares. so first things first, i tried to root using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790004 using the fascinateRootv02 but no go. i hear you can use superoneclick but looking at the superonelick thread, samsung fascinate is not supported? so if someone can point me to the right direction, i would appreciate it.
so with that said, i know there are a lot of roms available. i want to just stick to one that works well and avoid much as possible in keep changing roms. so what is the most popular roms out of the bunch?
thanks!

You are correct. You can just odin a CWR of your choice and then flash a ROM with the Super User package already in place and kaboom rooted
Superonelick (version...let me look here.....ugh... version 1.8) is fascinate compatible and I myself have used it before.
cheers.
** Edit **
To answer you question OP, the most popular ROM is Ultimatekangbang (Community ROM v1.x), Evil Fascination, and CyanogenMod 7 (Koas or CM7 by JT **Gingerbread**)
Quick break down
Kangbang (Comm)
-Community developed and updated frequently
-Most popular
-Comes with an overclockable/undervoltable kernel (up to 1.6ghz)
Evil Fascination
-2nd only to Kangbang
-Great ROM very clean
-No kernel (since I last checked could be wrong)
- Just use one of the PBJ kernels that are under volted for better battery life
-beta testing the LG android launcher
CM7
-Gingerbread (2.3)
-Camera, MMS, and BT do not function until a 2.3 official leak is obtained
-Smooth and completely open source
-heavily customizable
I use Kangbang 1.3 with the 100uv PBJ kernel and I see no crashes or force closing issues alongside 25 to 30 hours of battery life under normal use.

thanks for the info! hmm so you don't have to root to use odin? cool, i'll try this.
would voodoo work with kangbang? just saying because it seems like voodoo is the most popular kernel here. how different is 100uv PBJ then with voodoo? is there a there a one stop shop thread on info of which kernel does what?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048380
again i say welcome and enjoy ur amazing new phone.. i prefeer community rom

Switched from DX to Fascinate - I have questions. :)

I have a few questions to ask.
1. How do I keep CWM installed on the phone? I was able to get it to ODIN and have it, but every time it restarts, it's lost.
2. What is the best ROM for this device? I really would like to keep some of the Samsung/Touchwiz elements.
3. What all do I have to know to do anything on here? Let's say... On the Droid X, I had an .apk to one click root. I used ROM Manager to reboot to clockwork and from there I just selected the zip for the ROM I wanted installed. Is there anything special for this device I'll have to do on here? I already have it rooted and I already know I'll have to use ODIN for a lot of things, but I don't really know what it's purpose is I suppose.
4. Is there an easy way to get rid of Bingware/VZW Bloatware?
Thanks!
I have an asnwer to questions #2 and 4. By far the best rom is COMROM 2.0 , which u can find in fascinate development thread. The answer to question 4 is, yes there is an eassy way to get rid of it, all u have to do is flash comrom it gets rid of all the bloatware for you (like I said its the best rom out there)

1. If you are running the stock 2.2 OTA updates from verizon the stock kernel is what is holding your CWM back. It will reinstall the stock recovery every time you reboot.
-The best way to elevate this problem is to flash a new kernel. There are many to choose from and not all will work with your fascinate.
-If you choose to flash Unlimate Kangbang (comm ROM) you can flash a kernel and ROM in one nice little package. See the sticky in the dev forum for more kernels and info.
2. This is really up in the air. Many will say Kangbang (comm ROM) simply because they use it and it is spear headed by a majority of the developers for our phone. There are 5 or 6 options for you to choose from and reading over their features would be best.
-Cyanogen MOD 7 is in the works and currently there are two versions. Koas's version is said to be slightly more buggy then JT's. Neither have fully working camera's as of yet. The word on the street though is that JT may have a fully (don't quote me) working release in the coming weeks. If camera is not a deal breaker check it out.
3. I would check here ---> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=948722
-This post is a little out of date but it is rich with information on the fascinate. ODIN will be your friend, it is what we use when things go.... not as planned. There are many ODIN packages (radios, ROMS, etc) that will clean the fascinate of previous installs and take care of some problems you may be having if you flash a lot. It should be noted now that most of the ROMS out are already ROOTED so one click and other methods are not needed completely.
4. Yes. If you simply want a stock touchwiz ROM then you can look them up in the sticky. Many of the Devs debloat and debing the stock releases for those that choose that route as an alternative!
Cheers!

1. How do I know which kernel will work with my phone? And if it's easier, I would prefer to just shoot a ROM with kernel at the phone instead of installing separately.
2. What 5 or 6 am I looking at? I know about the COMM ROM, but I'm unsure I actually want to head that route due to the fact that I don't want to go COMPLETELY stock. After using this phone for a little bit, I really like some parts of Touchwiz, and I'd prefer not to lose that.
3. Thanks for the link. I'll definitely read that over.
4. What sticky are you talking about? I'm looking to get rid of Bing ASAP as this is just killing me when I want to use voice commands or search for anything.... It heads to Bing. I wouldn't mind Bing if I had a WP7, but this is a Google Experience.... Well, technically, it's not, but you understand what I mean.
There are ODIN packages in the development section that have a rom, kernel, etc. You can get a package that is stock... but no bloat, no bing. That would be pretty easy to do. Just make sure you backup data on your phone prior to messing with any of this. Really, I would still recommend com rom, ef, or miui wiz.

I don't know what I'm looking for. This forum is too jumbled with thousands of other ROMs and kernels and just everything.
the Evil Fascination rom thread answers a lot of your questions. It includes a kernel, it's voodoo'ed, and its debloated. if you want some of the samsung tw stuff, theres a portion on that thread where you can install it individually.
i'd start off finding a debloated/deodexed stock package and flashing that plus any custom kernels and mods and stuff you may want. Then check out the roms you might want, the two major ones right now being ComRom and CM7, but there are Evil Fascination, Dark Revenge, Superclean, and others which are stable and debloated as well.
tapatalked from my rooted/debloated stock eb01 Fascinate
Can you guys just link me to a ROM that's debloated? All I want is Google back so I can give this phone to my mom so she can have a good phone for once.

So I ended up installing EF, the MIUI, and the CommROM. I was just testing them for 10-15 minutes. So far, I like the CommROM the best, but I think MIUI is close.
I've been using CommROM all day, but I hate the colours. I wish it was more a standard Touchwhiz colour palette instead.
Also, I cannot seem to get the time to show up in the status bar. I unchecked the box in TSM parts and restarted my phone, but it's still not showing up. Is there something special I have to do?
change the text color setting in status bar settings in tsm parts, then reboot. As for the rest of the colors; there are plenty of themes for comrom 2.0

1)You can do whatever you want, there are no "basic steps"
Just i suggest you to get used with the stock rom and with android for about one or two weeks and then start rooting and/or installing custom roms...
2)No, not necessarly... You can use basically every custom rom and it will have lagfixes and overclock capable kernel...
3)What do you mean for clean things?
4)Yeah, if you keep staying with the stock rom you'll need it, otherwise when you will switch to a custom rom you will be ok
Thanks for your answer. please name some good custom rom which not buggy.

Well, you could give a try to the devoid #froyo-final or to Nessy #Jince... These two are the "simplest" IMHO... But there are a lot of good froyo roms out there: OpenOptimus, LOL 1.4.2 et cetera...
The reason why you are not getting a lot of specifics is that most of the 2.2 ROMs are very stable, fast with good battery life. It is mainly personal preference at this point.
openOptimus which uses Franco's kernel has most if not all of the tweeks in it. You would probably want to use Darktremor's Apps2SD to make use of the SD card. (A link is provided in the openOptimus thread.)
PS I can not suggest devoid.Franco as Franco is no longer updating it. Once the 2.3 source is released, most if not all development will be on 2.3. In fact, the shift has started with the leaked 2.3 ROM. The existing 2.3 ROMs are good but they have known problems/unresolved issues. I expect that these issues will be resolved over the next couple of months.

Use gingerbreak apk file if you are using currently froyo 2.2.2
or use z4root for 2.2 or 2.2.1
download rom manager at market.
2. Best custom rom which is not buggy and capable to overclock. Do i need gingerbread custom rom?
mik_os' cyanogenmod 7
plus if you want battery life more, flash franco kernal and wipe dalvik cache and charge till 100percent the wipe battery stats

[Q] Questions about new OS's and most things root and kernels... For Vibrant T-959

Hello everyone! I recently began contemplating rooting and doing custom installs for my 959, for something fresh and better performing, also seems my music player has been acting up recently and am really interested in something new along with voodoo sound... If necessary anymore ? Thing is, there are so many ways to root, and there are so many custom roms??? I don't know where to start or what to look for? I just want one of the better, stable, new custom roms available as of this date for the t-959. I search but seems there's no definitive answer? Just a lot of roms haha?
Also when downloading a rom, do I have to download like 30-40-50 kernels and add them? I see all these roms, kernels and update??? Is it just download a rom and that's it, am I making more of it than it should be?
I'm just really noob'ish, really confused, and really, really nervous! I can't afford to brick this phone, but I really want something new.
Thanks for reading, and I apologize for some of the silly questions I have asked .
I fell in love with rom flashing as it greatly improves performance and gives phone a new look. Especially since Vibrant isn't supported anymore.. I can't live without voodoo goodies=) Definitely improves sound.
Negative side of custom roms is it takes up some of your time.. Finding a rom you like, tweaking it.. Not too mention you might brick you phone.
If you decide so.. the most important thing is always read OP...
I used superoneclick to root. I recommend Bionix 1.3.1 as a first rom very stable though a bit outdated. After playing around with the rom, you can try different 2.2 kernels and modems. Then go on to gingerbread roms.=)
Extremely easy. I'd suggest reading some of my guides in my signature.
I would Odin
Then download a ROM (nothing else needed)
Download my option b update.zip
Move both to internal sd
Reboot into recovery
Click reinstall packages
Choose to install zip from sd, select ROM, reboot.
Sent using the XDA app.

Thank you trailblazer and thanks s15....
Any roms you would recommend s15? I appreciate the starting rom you gave me Trail, I'm looking for something a little more up to date I suppose? I was looking at cm7 or Simply Honey 5.0 Revolution(JVR GB 2.3.4)? Something with voodoo already in it? Something pretty stable with a bit of features. Maybe a lil less lag than stock 2.2, better performance, audio and battery life as well?
Thanks so much again both!
cm7 in nightlies still, though seem pretty stable, i havent tried for a while. Lots of features though dont think battery too great.
Simply Honey is a good one, stable, lots of features, great developer support.
I'm currently on RevolutionRom 2.3.4, stable and smooth for me, only bad is itfreezes like once or twice a day. More of a sgs2 look which i like. Good battery.
FYI Flashing Gingerbread roms, you will need to flash gingerbread bootloaders to remove rainbows and see recovery ( theres a post on it)
Also GPS isn't stable on gingerbread.

I think I'm gonna try the simply honey one or wait till he does a final release?, as for the bootloaders, what do I do or go to there? Also for the kernels, do I need to download one for simply honey? Should I download one for it?
I seen some roms or kernel can improve wifi and signal? Is that true, if so point me in that direction hahaha...
Thanks so much bro by the way.
search for Vibrant gingerbread bootloader, it's flashable via odin..simply honey roms comes with bullet kernel & there's Simply Honey Talon Kernel build by simone201 =)
Thanks man, do you mind if I ask which one you would recommend (Odin or Clockwork?)... I stumbled upon this youtube how to called "Custom ROM installation tutorial for the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant)", and was just wondering if I can apply all his methods to SH 5.0? Sorry tried to link it but cannot due to my post count... Oh and when I'm done, how should I proceed with the new talon kernel?
Also if there's a new release of honey or the final release, say I installed this one... Do I have to do it all over again? Same wit kernels? Finally, do I need to revert my unrooted stock 2.2 froyo back to a previous version before gingerbread or any of this?
Thanks for your reply. I'm actually feeling like it's almost go time with this rom and kernel haha. Really thanks heaps!
D bootloader is only flashable by odin..you can read the OP for simply honey, what you need is all in there in d development area..flash kernel that works 4ur phone u decide on that wether bullet or talon..you can use sgs kernel flasher to switch bet the two..

One last question before I do this, I seen SH 5.1, but I seen it was for the i9000? Which one should be used? or the one you may recommend? Im looking for voodoo sound controls.
Thanks
EDIT:
Nevermind I read it will be up tomorrow... gonna do 5.1, this is pretty exciting as long as I don't screw anything up hahaha
i reverted back to stock firmware via odin and one click rooted my phone, factory wiped all data and now I remember after I rooted my phone I had unzipped file in my sd card and it told me that i can just delete it after I was done, well i did and then watched a video on clockwork that said not to delete it?
EDIT: Nevermind I fixed it, I just unrooted and rooted again...
So sorry for being a pain, I know you guys have better things to do.
3 questions and this thread is done... thanks for the help...
1. Does the market work on simply honey? Like can go in and search and download it like usual?
2. should I use odin to install 5.1 or cw?
3. how does the kb5 work? is that like default or do i have to flash it?
Thanks a million in advance!

[Q] I'm a noob. Help?

I just recently got my Atrix 4G, I'm new to Android. I've done a lot of research relative to custom roms, rooting, kernals. I know how to root, Im sketchy about roms and kernals. I just wanna make my phone ATT stock free. It makes it slow, and I know this device can do so much more. But I just wanna know what I should do. I don't know whether to do these roms:
1: [ics] cm9 by photon dev team. 1/16/12
2: Official cm7 for Atrix Stable Only
3:[rom] cm7-ics-mod2 [11/01/12]
4: [P-rom] Gingerblur v. 4.5
Kernals: by faux123
Gingerbread enhanced stock kernal
Cyanogen 7 enhanced stock kernal
I do not want to hard brick my new phone.
I would like to know what ROM is the best, I like the gingerblur stability but i like the ICS theme. But Cyanogen is well known for great ROM. Just a mess. What kernal would I use for these specific roms? What do you prefer?
first install android-sdk -your pc type
onto your pc include /tools and platform-tools as far as kernals some roms dont like some kernals soo for example of you download and install darkside it has fauxs 1.0 kernal soo dont change it to some strange china built stick with fauxs and you cant go wrong

So prior to installing the software, what does that necessarily do? Relative to ROMS and Kernal files. I know I need ROM manager and Titanium backup apps with root for backup reasons and stuff.
First of all you will have to unlock the bootloader to install a recovery manager.
The noob guide will help you a lot. You need to first unlock your bootloader before you do any flashing.
Once that is done a recovery like Clockworkmod Recovery needs to be flashed, I'm pretty sure you can just do this through Rom Manager.
At this point, your options are expanded greatly. For most roms and kernels, you just need to download the rom, and drag and drop it into your internal sd card. After that you can go into recovery via Rom Manager. Once there, wipe your factory settings, cache, and dalvik cache (in advanced). Once this is done, do apply zip from sd card then choose from internal card then navigate to the rom you downloaded. Just make sure you want to do this because it will wipe everything from your phone except what is on your sd cards.
You don't need to mess around with the zip files at all when you download them. Just take the file you downloaded and get it to your sd card. The recovery will do the rest. Same goes with kernels. Just make sure that you have the right one for what rom you're on and flash it in recovery when after you are done setting up your new rom.
As far as roms go it just depends what you want. Right now its the motoblur or cm7 and just read what rom has the features you want the most.
Hopefully this helps a little, this is a basic idea of what you have to do. Flashing roms is not as hard as you think. Just be careful unlocking the bootloader. Anything else just ask away.
Well, first of all, since all the posts above have told you how to install roms and such, I won't go through that. I will say that you really don't have to download a new kernel, as most roms come with one that works just fine with them.
As far as which rom to go with, it depends on what you want.
If you want webtop and fingerprint scanner, and most the little blur apps that come with the stock phone with more mods and features go with wet dream, its a pretty nice rom
If all you want is webtop and fingerprint scanner and dont care about blur, go with a deblurred rom, I have used darkside and alien roms and they are both great, but I would say darkside has the most extra features. Aura also falls in this category.
If you want the fingerprint scanner then you can choose CM7 Weekly #4, or Neutrino Rom, which is based off of CM7 W#4, however both have some issues with wifi/bluetooth that you might want to read the forums about before flashing, and also Neutrino requires much more additional flashing for extra features, which is a good and a bad thing, good because you don't have to get any features you don't want and bad because you spend more time downloading and flashing zips.
If you don't care about webtop/fingerprint scanner/blur apps, and just want speed and stability then CM7 Ba2tf is the way to go, its completely stable and very fast as long as you follow install instructions.
As far as the CM9 roms, those aren't meant for noobs, they are in alpha testing and development so they are potentially unstable, so its best to wait for stable releases, or at the very least betas
The rom I am using now is Neutrino, and I am enjoying it alot, but you just have to go through the roms and find out about what they feature and don't feature, and of course there are plenty of other roms in the forum that I am completely ignorant about such as MIUI, so just look around and see what you like
ps when you do use someones rom, be sure to at least hit the "thanks" button at the bottom of their post. They put a lot of time and effort in it and it's always nice to get a thanks

android-sdk will allow you to use fast boot and adb and allow phone to communicate to the pc in the event it messes up and you will need fastboot and adb shell to root and unlock the bootloader

Well I believe you're confused, which is understandable.. What you're talking about is unlocking the phone by buying a code to put in so you can use any carriers sim card, you don't need to do that
to unlock the bootloader you just follow the steps in the noob guide for unlocking, that will allow you to install a custom recovery, which, yes, is required for flashing any custom roms
Yes you have to unlock the bootloader, install clockwork mod recovery and then a custom rom. there is some work here, it is all documented in the development section of this forum. As for a rom, I am currently on cm9, however for stability I would suggest cm7 by Turl and team Atrix.
unlocking your bootloader IS different than unlocking the phone to other carriers its 2 differnt things and yes
before a custom rom can be installed the bootloader has to be unlocked
(takes 5 min)

Thank you to everyone who helped with my situation. I'm currently running jokersax cm9 special build w/ faux123 cm9 1ghz kernal and I absolutely love it.
