Recommended root methods? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I got my Fascinate less that a week ago (my first Android phone) and I've been taking a crack at doing some flashing. I tried the rooting method on the Cyanogenmod wiki to no avail (would not do the proper cwn recovery boot) and eventually went to the Odin method. The Odin method succeeded in giving me a proper root as I was able to install Miui but it would mess up whenever I tried Cyanogenmod7. Today, I ended up flashing back to stock Froyo due to terrible battery life I was getting in Miui, so I'm really kind of frustrated with all this running in circles. Is there a definitely method for flashing on a EB01/EB04 Fascinate that would leave me able to install Cyanogenmod7?

In jt's CM7 thread there is a CWM attached at the bottom which will let you install CM7 without any hassle. (At least, it did for me when I was getting errors installing.)
I used the Odin version, but I imagine either would work. Once you load that, you should be able to flash CM7. I believe the ROM is pre-rooted, as well.

[Q] Odin a non-rooted phone?

My friend just got his Fascinate back from a warranty replacement, and it is thus STOCK and bloated. Now, I hadn't ever used Odin until after I had a working new kernel on my phone, and my phone was already rooted.
So I was wondering, for my buddy's phone, is it possible to just use ODIN to flash the new modem and a complete rom w/ clockwork mod (such as superclean)?
I guess to be even more accurate, is there any reason why download mode would not work from a stock phone? I don't want to brick his phone since it took him 3 weeks to get it back the first time.
Download mode will work just fine.
You'll need to flash recovery via Odin as well to be able to flash a rom in CWM.

I was figuring on using one of the md5 files that have SC and CWM bundled together in one nice little package. I figure if it doesn't work, I can always try something else.
I'm planning on using this from androidcentral forums, forum.androidcentral.com/verizon-fascinate-rooting-roms-hacks/59348-odin-froyo-leaked-packaged-custom-roms-w-root-clockwork-updated-3-25-a.html to install superclean 2.9 in my stock Eclair. I just rooted my phone but have not flashed CWM. I don't really care about data or apps in the phone (I'd rather download everything from the market once I'm done) so I haven't made a backup ( I'm a real daredevil ).
Any suggestions or warnings?
Also I'm planning to use Heimdall instead of Odin (Since I'm running Ubuntu). Anyone has done it before. Are there any special instructions?
My worst case scenario is that it fails with Heimdall and I have to get to a Windows PC to run Odin and do it again.

Yeah. I've used those packages before, and that's what I was planning on using for my friend's phone. The only thing was that I've only used those AFTER I was rooted and had roms installed.
I installed a SC (superclean) rom from Adryn, then installed the eb01 Voodoo kernel, then installed the new voodoo kernel from jt (which is super stable). I don't know if you have to go in this order, but I'm not getting any FC issues., and battery seems to be pretty good compared to SC292's kernel.
I'm guessing you don't need to follow the sequence, since flashing a ROM (as far as I know) writes everything you need to make it work. To answer my own question, there is a [GUIDE] Flashing with Heimdall

[Q] I am looking for the stock T959 (Vibrant) bootloader, and detailed instructions.

I originally set out to upgrade to the latest CM7 build, but got an error about proper load EDITstatus 7) and it would not upgrade. So I decided to just put the official 2.3 on my Vibrant, however now it seems I have a different bootloader, the I9000 bootloader.
Ultimately I would like to get back to full stock, including bootloader so I can start fresh and hopefully get CM7 installed or at least the official 2.3 installed. I currently have stock JFD installed (using Odin).
If there is a way with my current install (i9000 bootloader and JFD) to get CM7 nightly I would love to know how to do that. I have tried the wiki instructions, but I am not able to get Heimdall Suite to work (I have Lion installed on my Mac, and it just does not want to find the phone no matter what on my pc). I have Rom Manager Premium but I do not see CyanogenMod listed under downloadable roms.
I have a ton of bookmarked pages of how to install CM7, but I think my problem is the bootloader as I can not seem to get CM7 to install from recovery. Perhaps there is a way to put CM7 on my T959 using Odin?
I have also found one download with a boot.bin and sbl.bin inside a .rar, but since there were not decent instructions for how to load these using Odin (if that is even how you do it), I didnt want to attempt bricking my phone.
I would say im a pretty advanced user, I have in the past installed with out any problem many different roms (Bionix, Miui). Any advice is welcome. Please help me get back to my precious CM7
When trying to install the CM7 kernel from recovery i get the following error:
assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") =="galaxys2" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "galaxys2" .... Status 7

and so on.
I got my kernel from here and have tried kernels from the CM7 wiki, as well as roms from there as well. I know it normally means it is a miss match between the phone and software (status 7), but I have a T959, and I have tried from the official vibrant wiki at CM7.

Thanks for the thread. This seems to have a the original bootloaders, and a lot of other nice bootloaders for gingerbread. I will test it out tonight and let you know if this worked for me.
If you happen to have a link for installing CM7 with Odin please let me know.

glad its what you wanted, i was in abit of a rush and just read the thread name so posted that
I have been trying some stuff, the official bootloader from there didnt pass MD5 check in odin. please read my update/edit if you can help.
I, too, have been messing around with the Vibrant way too many times and it has bricked on me at least 6 times already because (stupid me) I went from ROM to ROM without Odin-ing back to stock.
Pertaining to your matters, Im not sure exactly where you're stuck right now. If you're stuck ODIN-ing, check to see if you have the right PIT file. If anything, redownload the stock JFD and stock PIT file and re-do it again. I've read somewhere, you really cant "brick" an android unless its hardware related or you throw your phone out the window.
If you're stuck trying to get CM7 on your vibrant then... wait, why are you trying to get Nightlies on your vibrant? I say you're better of flashing CM7 Trigger Redux (which is what I'm using now). I've heard its much better with more features (working GPS and more) than Nightlies. In case you wanted to check it out, heres the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1156123
But anyhow, you're decision. From past experiences, after I ODIN back to stock, I rooted the stock and downloaded ROM Manager and then flashed the ROM that I wanted like Trigger Redux or Bionix. This pretty much worked for me. Hope this helps.

Help i messed something up

ok so i wouldnt say im a noob but im not as advanced as some of yous. last night i flashed a leaked ics onto my phone and loved it with one exception. i couldnt figure out how to root it. all my apps are backed up on titanium backup and i didnt want to have to get all of them manually. so i flashed back to stock using odin with a file i used back when that crappy update came out. i rooted it with super one click and and then went to put on a prerooted ics... when in recovery mode now i get this message
cant access to '/system/csc/att/system/'
i try putting on cwm and siyah and i keep getting authentication errors and the installation aborts. also recovery mode wont read my external sd card now. when the phone is booted up it works fine except i tried to do the factory ota update and it keeps failing. i tried reflashing back to stock again and did the update unrooted and it still failed.
i know you guys hate hate when people ask without researching so i did SOME forum browsing and found nothing. sorry i dont really have time to look too extensively. i just want to know how to fix it. i appreciate any help i can get

Start with getting back to stock using this guide. Check for ICS bootloaders too, you probably flashed them and you have to get stock ones back (careful, flashing bootloaders can cause hardbricking). Once you're back to stock and rooted, you shouldn't need to ever use PC Odin again.
Then use this guide for rooting/flashing.
One other note: when you tried to install CWM, it sounds like you loaded an update.zip onto your phone then tried to install it using stock recovery. Stock recovery won't let you install unsigned update.zips, which is why that method for getting CWM on your phone will never work (hence the authentication error and installation abort). For our phone, CWM is only included in custom kernels, that's the only way to get it on there, and don't even think about updating or changing it via other means. Just flash a custom kernel, it'll include CWM, use it until you want to switch kernels.
Hit my thanks button, I was really nice this time. And post in Q/A next time as well.
EDIT: Skip the second guide if all you want is stock. You should be able to update OTA after following the first guide. Though even if stock is what you want, I highly recommend flashing a custom GB kernel because a) they're more stable and faster and b) you'll have CWM in case you need it.
You started off mentioning about "leak ics" which I have absolutely zero experience.
My suggestion:
1. Try to get it back to stock. Make sure it works correctly.
2. If hasn't rooted yet, do so.
3. Getting CMW into the device by flashing custom kernel.
4. From there, install any ICS ROM you want.

HELP 3 days with Vibrant softbricks!

Okay in the last three days I have softbricked my vibrant several times. Each time after tyring to update to a newer ROM. Now however I can not even return to what I had, only the Eclair ROM. I was running Tigers Breath Kernel with Bionix ROM
I should point out that my efs has hone corrupt mysteriously on this phone twice before in the past , and luckily I made a back up that was easily restored.
I now have a vibrant that was restored to a stock image however I believe the stock image is incomplete. It lacks the ability to reset.Says Something like reset service unavailable. I would be happy for now at the stock eclair image however I run into the same issue I had on Eclair before. Android Market will not download any apk, it starts pauses and fails.. When I look at the corresponding device in google play on the web I see it says PHONE and there is another SAMSUNG GALAXY VIBRANT T 969 . However the corresponding device is PHONE . So Google has no idea what my phone is. This could be the market issue however I want to point out that when I first set up the google account I can go to the market and download but once the market app is updated, it no longer works!
So a few days ago my goal was to attempt to install Gingerbread or higher to take a look at xbmc for android betas. The result has literally given me a 3 day headache.
before three days ago I was running Bionix and Tigers breath kernel. I tried to follow instructions to downgrade to stock and then to Gingerbread or higher. I have now made more the several attempts. All I can do is O|DIN to the stock image I have which complains that oit lacks the reset service.
Even trying to restore either of My CWM back ujps of Bionix fails.
I also have another interesting thing that when I attempt to install CWM from an update.zip I get screen goes black for a second then i see CWM running . It is as if it is running it instead of installing it.
The one image that I have that I can restore does have ROM manager that55 always reports a download error with installing CWM from there
Is there an image that I can install from ODIN that will get me Gingerbread or higher? ODIN seems to be my only hope.
And what of the market errors , do ya think my EFS is hammered again? before the issue was the electronic serial number (dont remember what its called) but the carrier stopped honoring the generic number it was producing. I do however recall last year that I could not get the market working and now I seem to have returned to that. I think it has much to do with the market version on Eclair.
would the vibrant be adequate to run XBMC beta at lest to test it?
Should I repartition from ODIN?
Is there a stock froyo image around at least that I can install from ODIN?
Thanks,
Mark
Yes you should check repartition when you use Odin to flash ROMs. There are froyo Odin images out there but I don't think there is a "true" stock 2.2 froyo image, only custom ones. I know there is a ROM uploaded by moped ryder that is as close as you will get to stock 2.2, fishman made an odin image of it. You can check it out here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674519. I know for sure fishman uploads odin images with his 2.2 ROMS, they are far from stock but I love them. I've been running Axura resurrected 2.2 for months, its solid. You can check it out with this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1787267, it has odin images. Just be sure to read first and follow directions.

If it was me, I would Odin back to stock JFD. There is a guide on YouTube by Eddie1west that I recommend.
Then just I would follow the guide to install Gingerbread boot loaders.
Then I would download and wipe/wipe cache/dalvik and flash a fresh Froyo ROM download. I use Bionix V fishmans with the Bali kernel. Then if your satisfied then stop. If not, download latest CM9 Nightly (ICS). Wipe/wipe cache/dalvik and flash the ROM and common files.
Since you've gone this far download latest Helly Bean all in one, wipe/wipe cache/dalvik and flash HB and the add on file.
Might as well right? I had lots of trouble flashing up to HB yesterday, and I had never had any issues before.. but if your looking to get to GB or beyond... I would follow the steps above. Could be overkill. But I tried about every other combination of flashes I could think of before Odining back and doing it that way.

[Q] Got my Hands on a VIbrant. Now how do I replace its ROM?

Hello everyone.
As the title says I recently got my hands on a Samsung Vibrant. I have it from a friend who just left the apartment we lived in together for 5 months as she didn't need it anymore. It currently has a MIUI ROM on it and I'd like to change it to sada23's unofficial CM 11.0
The problem is however that my only previous experience with flashing ROM was with a Samsung Galaxy Chat when I slapped Jelly Bean on it which was only released in a few countries. So I went right ahead but found the amount of things I have to do overwhelming compared to when I just used ODIN on the old phone.
I'm trying to tell what the current status is of the phone and this is what I've been able to come up with so far. (also after googling what everything is and does lol)
- MIUI present so custom ROM install definitely possible
- When I booted into recovery mode I saw it has: "Semaphore CWM Recovery v6.0.1.9" (which I presume is outdated)
- BY default the MIUI ROM apparently has a superuser app (which lead me to think that the device is rooted), however everytime I try to use an app that requires root I encounter errors.
I just did a backup using the recovery mode with semaphore cause I saw this is usually a first step in all the guides I've read. However from here on out I am completely clueless on what to do because all the guides were so different from eachother and I have a feeling my phone is in a vague situation. (root/not rooted?)
So I was hoping someone here could point me into the right direction and help me get to CM from MIUI. Thank you in advance.
I'll be following this thread.. kinda in a similar situation. Although a bit worse. I had an old vibrant in a drawer from years back in mint condish!.. last thing I did was root and install recovery. Unfortunately I'm a stooge and without thinking threw a 4.4 rom zip on the phone.. booted to recovery and cleaned and tried to flash.. bottom line i'm in a bootloop now... and I gave up when odin wasn't detecting the phone.. I"ll figure that out eventually, but it would be great to just have a 4.4 Odin tar for a quick and painless install... or at least a tar from a 4.0 with root and recovery to make the 4.4 upgrade easy.
Also would be interested in knowing if the 4.4 roms work well.. Gps will be most important to me since I plan to use this as my jogging phone.
alrighty.. let's get this party started!
Edit - I think the best thing for you to do is odin back to stock then root install custom bootloader and then flash your new rom, I've heard that you can go straight to kk from stock but the guy who posted above me has problems because of that so I would try flashing an ICS ROM for the recovery first, and don't forget to make a nandroid backup
You can find all the files and programs you'll ever need here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1982728 in NOOB_IN_NEED 'S ref thread
Hope I was of some help if I was hit the thanks button
