I'm not looking for a time frame or anything since I know those are hard to make, but I'm just wondering if anyone has a good idea on whether or not it is looking strong for the Atrix to get the bootloader bypassed(or whatever is needed for custom ROMs).
I'm asking because my contract ends next week and I'm looking to get a new phone and I'm liking the Atrix a lot since it has a dual core processor and everything, but the lack of custom ROMs is making me think again about getting it and pushing me towards looking for other phones.
I know there is currently work being done on it, but does anyone think it's highly probable that the boot loader will get cracked and allow us to install custom ROMs? Or is the result still sketchy and should I keep looking at other phones to get instead?
Honestly, the Atrix is a beast of a phone anyway. And an Android phone without a custom ROM is still the best phone on the market, especially if it's got a dual core bad boy under the hood.
On one hand, many previous Motorola phones with locked bootloaders remain locked and unbypassed to this day...HOWEVER, some have been bypassed or something similar. And considering the nature of this phone being one of Moto's flagship devices, there might be incentive to possibly unlock it themselves (doubtful, however...)
Honestly, I don't really think anyone can for certain what might happen. But if your contract up in a week, developments could happen in that time frame. There's a small chance GingerBread might come sooner than expected, which, locked bootloader or not, that'd be awesome. The sad thing is, it doesn't seem there are many more nice ATT phones on the horizon anyway, even with open bootloaders. Most of the good ones would probably be out by your next upgrade anyway!
I know I didn't have any solid answers, but I hope it helps in your decision making process! Sorry if it got you no where though!

Thanks for your input! I'm currently trying to decide between the Atrix and the Infuse 4G. I would definitely get the Galaxy S 2 if that came out in time, but I'm impatient and just can't wait any longer than I have to, so I have to pick something that's already out.
I really want the Atrix because of it's dual core, but it's locked bootloader scares me. On the other hand I really want the Infuse because it doesn't have a locked bootloader and seems like it's the next best phone, but it only has a single core processor.
What exactly would I be missing out on if I can't use any locked bootloaders? All I know about them really is that they are supposed to make phones faster as well as give you Android upgrades faster than officially. Is there anything else?
I'm pretty sure 2.3 is supposed to be coming out to the Atrix officially anyways, so I'm not TOO worried about that, but would the roms that are already available that do things like remove Motoblur and whatnot increase it's speed enough to make up for the loss of increased speed from ROMs?
The atrix is like the PS3 when it first came out. Way ahead of its time in terms of technology and power. Ive stated this before somewhere on this forum, but IMO this beast of a phone is ahead of itself, The current operating system doesn't even fully harness the power under the hood. I'm excited to see how far this phone can be pushed! Unlocked bootloader or not. Ya its fun to play with roms and all and tweak the phone, but even then those phones still look up to the atrix.
You can still Dress up user interface just not the interface itself. Which is most cases, most users of roms, flash them primarily for the look and feel of interaction with the device. Don't get me wrong, a lot of users flash these roms because of the android version and the upgrades it brings with it before the official release for their phone if at all. In the end I believe the atrix will be sticking around for a while and continue to make techy geeks like me genuinely say wow this thing is bad a**.
You don't have to worry about speed with the atrix. Its fast already. Ya stock motoblur is garbage, but thanks to some awesome DEVs we have Pseudo-Roms that make the atrix Fluid as well as fast. The main Gripe about this phone is the fact that it doesn't have GingerBread yet. I think the wait will be well worth it in the end.
Not that im not expecting such, as the locked bootloader has everyone kind og sitting in neutral, revving that proverbial dual core engine..
Since the GB update i guess i have been happy, tho you always want more. I still feel we are not taknig full advantage of the Tegra2 hardware give to us.
Hopefully the devs will break this bootlader and open the world to the way the x2 should preform.
Maybe the Google acquisition of Motorola will lead to an unlocked bootloader. The Photon unlock is encouraging too. Who knows. I more excited for that deal then HTC overpaying for half of Beats.

I think that things are going reasonably well as development goes, especially considering the time of year (gearing up to go to school or send kids to school).
We have CorteX2 and Eclipse that have had recent updates and we think that there is a CM7 in store for us. There has also been some activity on the bootloader front (anyone who can do it has $25 from me) so there is a glimmer of hope there.
But generally speaking my x2 runs awesome on Eclipse, my only lingering issue is getting HDMI out to work right in landscape mode.
Thanks to all the devs for their hard work
Thia should have been posted in the general section. Dev section is for purely for development only. Just for future reference.
We're gettin' an unlocked bootloader soon. Don't worry.
Mike
Tapin' the talk from my Droid x2.
the thread about a possibility of an unlocked bootloader got deleted but these posts are all over the place? everyone needs to quit whining!!! the X2 has only been really popular for about a month (since the insurance replacement people came in) and they will continue to come in. the devs we have now are awesome and im sure are hard at work, they just have better things to do than to get everyone excited over something that isnt even in Alpha stages... just wait. for all we know tomorrow morning there will be a post that says "[APK] Bootloader Unlocker"...just gotta be patient and support the devs we have
I got deleted cause too many people were flooding the IRC, and it wasn't helping anything, it's in the works. I wouldn't say that people are complaining, they're just concerned and frustrated. I sorta am too, but also very relieved that things are picking up. We got the ball rolling again, a lot of good things are taking place right now. If we do get the bootloader unlocked then we won't even need the Atrix Recovery Port or the Atrix 2nd-init, because we will be able to use init.d and flash our own recovery. This will be the best Droid yet, cause as you know, the original Droid X still is locked down and does not have any custom kernels.
Development will come. People need to learn to be patient!
If you can't wait, go pick up a D1 or an Eris and have a ball.
I feel sorry for anyone that got the X2 right away... but every since the chinese rom was modified and we were broughten MinimalX this has been my favorite piece of technology ever, slowly going through all the available ROMS has been great. Havent even brought it to Eclipse yet (cortex2 is hard to want to leave even knowing I could it back in no time at all)
I dont think the X2 is dead at all, we have quite a few amazing people working on all of this, and the google buying moto thing adds a whole new layer of amazing... Moto has to bow to Verizon, Google bows to NOONE but the user, I think inside of this year we will be swapping kernals on this beast
Why is this in the dev forums? Please post in the correct sections. Thread locked.
Hello everyone I need some help deciding if I should get the Photon 4G or the Epic Touch? I really want the Photon but I'm a little worried about the pentile display, the lag and random reboots I've been hearing about. I'm worried about the Epic Touch because of the weak reception, plasticky hardware, and I also don't know if the 4.5 in screen is just too big? What do you all think?
Sent from my PB99400 using XDA App
My Photon works great! No real lag and never randon reboots.
However, I am thinking of getting another phone because the Photon does not have nearly as much develpment as some phones do.
And I am eager to try ice cream sandwich (which is already available on the Nexus S, Epic Touch, etc.)
The pentile screen bothers me only rarely. I think the better your eye sight is, the worse it looks. For me, it only looks pixellated when my glasses are on ;-)
Good point the development for the photon does seem lacking
Sent from my PB99400 using XDA App
Random reboots are a gingerbread thing. Just about every GB phone has that problem, some more than others. I've had 1 in the month and a half I've had my photon. Epic Touch is great from a computing standpoint, that's where it really wins. However, the support from Samsung is very lacking. They have quite a few issues, especially loss of signal, where they have to be rebooted to get signal back. Photon works better as a phone, and still very good as a computer. Touch great as a computer, not so great as a phone. Development may lack here, but it's not as necessary yet (until software and programming start to overload the hardware, about a year).
The display difference is very noticeable, as I came from an Epic. After a couple weeks, however, I didn't really notice anymore and it definitely doesn't bother or annoy me.

I have had a stock ROM rooted Motorola Photon 4G since it's launch as well as the POTAUs and haven't had any issues with mine regarding response lag or device reboots and the PenTile matrix display doesn't phase me any. If you need an Android OS based device and travel internationally, I'd go with the Motorola Photon 4G. If you want an ultra thin Android OS based design with a screen size just under a 2" difference short of the Galaxy Tab, go with the Samsung Epich Touch 4G.
my photon reboots atleast twice a day.I'd go for the epic touch if I could do it again.

Photon... Some people on here don't look good enough in the development section.. OC kernels a very stable Cm7 with everything working.. And that even have a oc 1.4 kernel to it... You can push out 40 different roms with maybe 1 or 2 tweak differences.. Lot of the devs been working quietly.. And there's something cold .... Hmmm .. Lol.. But honestly the photon is a great device best in my book for sprint radio and build wise.. The ET is ok just don't trust Samsung anymore.. The reboots not happening with me unless they do when I'm sleep. Just get a photon my word you won't regret it..

Are you sure the photon is worth it?

I came from epic touch to photon. Personally i have had a lot of issues with samsung phones. The major one (hopefully fixed by now) was the loss of service issue. Thats why i got the photon and i dont regret it at all.

The photon is a much better device, better build quality, better wireless radio. The original Epic 4G just got officially updated to Gingerbread a couple weeks ago so that lets you know how bad samsung is when it comes to supporting there phones. If you've ever owned a samsung phone you know about the cheap plastic feel they all have. Question is would you rather have a bigger screen or a better phone?
I actually bought a near mint used photon off eBay as I got tired of waiting on Samsung to push put GB for my Epic as my family's cheaper phones were getting GB. I have not had a single of the issues that have been reported. Crosses fingers. Never had a random reboot. The battery life is amazing! As soon as an ICS port comes out, I'll likely root it. I have looked at the ET4G, but would be hard pressed to leave my photon for it. Just my opinion. You'll find pros and cons for both. The photon runs every app that I needed from the market flawlessly. It is an excellent phone.
I love my photon haven't had a problem since i got it(week after it came out). We just need more devs.

to do what ??
port CM7 ? (almost done and almost official.. then I suspect work on MIUI may follow)
build kernels for overclocking ? (done.. we're stable to 1.4)
for themes ? (got plenty of that going on)
or here's a harsh statement. join the dev crowd. Then we'll have another one.
A device's quality is not measured by the development community behind it. A device's quality is measured by how well it works and the support it receives from it's manufacturer.
Most of the development communities for some of the other devices are re themed copies of 1 or 2 different ROMs and a tweak or 2 here or there.. most of the 'devs' in the other device communities are "cut/paste' devs.. they copy and paste different parts of several ROMs together, package it and call it their own.
What we have here in MoPhoLand are several VERY talented devs that collaborate and really BUILD their software enhancements/improvements. Sure they ask for help along the way when they run into an obstacle but who doesn't ?? Personally I got sick of flashing ROM after ROM after ROM on my Epic just to get this feature working properly, or get away from that bug etc.. IMO the selection of enhancements that are available for the Photon are very good quality. CM7 is very usable, we also have a couple overclock kernels. what more do you need ?? The device is great just rooted stock.. anything else is just taking something really good and making it great.

Well i guess you are right that a lot of other "devs" are copy and paste, and that i should also learn how to do what i want seeing it's well what i want.I guess the only thing i'm really waiting for is unlocked bootloader w/ 4g Seeing i live in a 4g area and it is really nice to have. So i should have been more careful on choosing my words instead of just saying "we just need more devs". Also learning how to create stuff for phones sounds like fun, seeing i love to learn stuff like this and I've learned basics of java and looked into c++ just because it was interesting to me, It's just since my son was born, working full time and spending time with my wife kind of eats all my time, I can almost never work on my car or even clean it cuz i'm so busy now a days. So to wrap things all up, yes we do have a great devs and i should learn to help myself instead of asking for people to do it for me. But if someone was doing it for me i'm willing to wait.

No lags for me.
Reboots once a week - but my HTC phones did that too. It's an Android SW issue, not a HW issue.
I love the Pentile display, but some hate it. See it for yourself.
Sammy is cheap and plastic to me.
I tried the 2 phones side by side in a store - Moto much better on data speeds.
4.5 is not an issue to me - really doesn't seem big.
You didn't mention the showstopper for me - the lower resolution for the Sammy. That alone kept me from buying.
For those of you experiencing random reboots, does it ever happen to you when you are talking on the phone? This is a big problem for me.
Deff go with the Photon. I bought it used off Ebay and have had no issues. I came from an Epic 4g and ill never go back to Sammy again. They dont support their device and when an updates thats been promised for months finally comes out it breaks the GPS. I have a friend with the Epic Touch and he hates it. Its a good phone but there is a severe loss of service issue that Sprint and Samsung have no idea when it will be fixed. On my old epic I had 1 bar of service in my house now I have 4 bars. I love this phone. Best part about it in my opinion is the fact that Google bought Motorola so we should be seeing an update to ICE relatively soon.
just say no to crapsung!

One of the main downfalls i can see for the photon if you use 4g and your lazy (like me) and don't wona do the long way to get ROMs on
I've had the Sidekick 4G since it was released about a year and a half ago. I know now that Samsung and T-Mobile have pretty much left it to die. I know even when it was new, there wasn't a whole lot of support for it but with it dead, I would think the dev community would come out in droves to develop on it.
I'm sure your asking why would devs do that on an old phone. Here are a few. It's 4G so it's just as fast as new phones, the processor is fairly good and I've never had any lag complaints around it, and best of all it's going to be cheap now that it's dead. If you could pick up a cheap 4G phone with a full keyboard, why wouldn't you want to flash the hell out of it.
There are a few custom Touchwiz components from what I understand that have stopped a lot of devs but since it's dead, T-Mobile or Samsung may be willing to release the code or with enough people working on it, we may be able to get past the issues. The stock version is Froyo so there is tons of room for improvement and a grateful community if it gets done.
I would be interested to hear why dev teams wouldn't want to play with a cheap 4g, full keyboard phone. Let me know.
thanks
Chad
Hey everybody, I'm looking to upgrade to a new phone tomorrow and I've got my sights set on the DNA I just had some questions I'm hoping current owners could help me out with. I know most of these answers are spread out through multiple topics but most are polluted by trolls with other phones bashing HTC so I was hoping to get some consolidated answers from actual owners.
First of all for those that currently have this phone, what are the current drawbacks and issues you're dealing with (besides the storage issue and the battery there's been enough discussion about this already)? Are there any deal breaking issues? Are you gonna stick with it or are you looking to switch to another phone?
How is the overall performance of the phone in day to day use, like web browsing, texting, occasional gaming, video watching etc?
With the current S-On limitation how does that affect actual user operations? Can you still use root explorer to side load apps remove bloat etc? Can you use titanium backup to its full extent, freezing, removing, and converting system apps?
As for the development scene, I know there's been a lot of discussion about this and its hard to foresee future development but are there a lot of developers working on this phone? Is there a place we can actively follow development like Twitter or IRC?
I'm coming from a Droid X2 which has a very limited dev scene, basically we had one amazing dev that was able to make our phone even remotely useable, got cm9 and 10 running on a gingerbread kernel haha. Most devs and even Motorola itself abandoned this phone only a few months after it was released I hope to avoid a situation like this again so having an active dev scene is important to me.
Anything else I should know before jumping aboard?

Battery life and performance have both been stellar. I use my phone heavily through the day for web browsing, texting, a few phone calls, streaming videos, and I can make it through a whole day without any issues. My phone has yet to lag or hiccup, and it's always running smoothly. The build quality is superb, and the edge-to-edge glass is extremely pleasant. I can't really comment on your questions about S-ON, as I have yet to root my phone. Even without root though, it's easily surpassing my expectations!

First of all I have been loving my device so far. I am a pretty heavy user, but the battery gets me through the day no prob, and I currently have the clock set to 1.826GHz. S-off only matters while you are actually booted into android. You can't write to the system partition while booted into android, but you can write to it while in CWM or TWRP. This still allows you to debloat etc, it just isn't half as convenient with S-ON. Custom roms are slowly trickling out as well. They are still pretty similar to stock currently but I am sure more and more changes will come over time.
Performance on this phone is stellar. It never lags or slows whatsoever. There are some apps that haven't been updated to support 1080p (angry birds star wars for example crashes as soon as you open a level.) The only real drawback is that the radio interface layer has not been cracked yet, so we can't get AOSP style roms like Cyanogen. People are working on it, its only a matter of time. Also at least one person claims to have a viable method to get S-Off but it won't be released for a while still if it is true.

If you do not root and install a custom Rom there will be drawbacks. Htc pour many annoying persistent notifications throughout the phone. Most notably Wi-Fi. It is always in the notification drawer with Wi-Fi on or off. This is the same with GPS although that is only a small symbol. Also you lose much screen real estate with a three dot menu button that loves to appear. Both these issues are fixed in the custom Roms. These are the only drawbacks.
Battery is great. I make it through the day and I am always using my phone. Performance is better. I have not used any other device this smooth and fast even with the most intense games and apps. And the benchmarks are fun to brag about.
S-on is a problem. You can't use most of the titanium features besides backup and restore. Doing anything besides freezing system apps causes the apps to return after a reboot. Many people use the twrp recovery as it allows you to delle system apps with its built in file manager.
Developers are getting better. The ukb room to me is the best in terms of features and things that will be added. I would follow that thread and in general just check the development section every other day

I am assuming your on verizon. If you don't mind the sizing get the note 2 over the dna. It maybe 100 dollars more but since you seem to be a long term phone guy I would go with the note 2 instead. I do own both btw. Couple reasons:
#1 Battery performance will degrade in the next 2 yrs, that's an easy solution with the note 2.
#2 You might be able to live with the 14 or 13gb of free storage there is, I can kind do it with compromises. Right now I have one rom, one back up, 351mb of music, 154mb in pictures and I am down to 3.28gb available with 2 big sized games I guess. Seeing that you like to flash roms, mods so forth 16gb might not be enough.
#3 Battery life in my experience is decent, not stellar but decent. On par with my S3 but not as good but close.
It's a good phone, feels good, screen looks great but once the initial drool of the display goes away you start considering what you compromised to get this phone. I like this phone a lot and I will be replacing it with a HTC butterfly (due to the sd slot) but my note 2 will still be my favorite. Oh in terms of S3 vs DNA, I would take the DNA lol. S3 display is great but the pentile bothers me and since my s3 was a us version it was gimped.
Thanks for all the information about the performance, drawbacks, and development info of this phone. Nycdarkness thanks for those points about the Note II I'll be keeping that in my mind. I'll be heading down to the Verizon store to check them out it'll be nice to be able to make an informed decision my last phone I didn't do much research and ended up regretting my decision for the last year haha

It's an excellent excellent smartphone, a million times better than my galaxy nexus. I don't store 100 hours of music on my phone, only ten or so albums and rotate them periodically between cloud and on device. I guess I'm not a huge music head but I don't have any concern about the storage.
Comparisons between the DNA and Note 2 are silly since they're so different by nature. One is a stylish satchel, the other is a duffel bag. If you need the storage, get the Note 2.
Well just wanted to say I went ahead abs and pulled the trigger on the DNA. Enjoy it cause it is one hell of a phone. What i like most is that it doesn't feel phablety at all compared to the note II I just love how it feels like a phone I've always loves HTC devices and I love sense always have always will. In a way sense has kinda spoiled the android experience for me because when i try out other OEM software i just can't get myself to like it the closes I've come was pure Google. I do enjoy it just not as much as sense

Basically I'm superficial when it comes to tech stuff.
My 27" iMac with MM-1 Bowers & Wilkins speakers are as much, and more, about looks as they are about function and performance.
I own the DNA because it is simply the best looking (and feeling) smartphone currently on the market.
And since I exchanged my original (defective call quality) DNA set I am now happy.
It's a solid phone, you can't go wrong with it.
