A few quick questions.
1) Can any of you guys shed light on how to extract some of the original apps from our Samsung Fascinate?
2) Would apps (such as Phone Dialer or Calendar) work without the Touchwiz framework in place?
The reason I ask is because I am on Cynaogenmod and am loving everything about it, but the stock calendar sucks hard, and even though I've switched to using Go Dialer, I still like the speed and cleanliness of the original Dialer that came with our phone.
Super File Manager can extract apk files. Don't know if you can install them in CM7. Go under apk manager in Super Manager.

I recently updated my phone to Eugene's Franken-Twiz. After doing so, I went to use my calculator to find out that the one used in this rom (stock calculator?) is severely lacking in functionality. I tried download the .zip of Vibrant apps, but there wasn't a calculator listed. Does anyone have the calculator.apk?
There is one there. The Touchwiz calculator is named TouchwizCalculator.apk. In order for it to show up though it has to be deodexed. You should download the deodexed rom that's out there and pull it out.

Thanks! It was sneakily hiding under the TouchWiz title.
Here is a modified stock AT&T Contacts.apk file without the permanent Yellow Pages contact at the top. The is for rooted users only.
Replace the Contacts.apk in /system/app using Root Explorer. Change it's permissions to RW-R--R--. Reboot!
WARNING: Do not use this for any custom ROMs, only for use on a stock AT&T ROM! Also, remember to make backups...
Funny, I never even noticed the YP thingy on the top of my contacts till now. How lame. When I clicked on it, I got a force close. I must have already frozen whatever that button links to...
Thanks, maybe that apk can be swapped out for the stock one in our custom rom(s)...

Awesome work!! This is verified working.
Niceeeee. Like to see dev work like this. Great work. This should maybe be in the themes and apps section though. Not a criticism.
How obnoxious of them to stick that YP in the contacts ?
Thanks, I tried posting in dev but it said not enough posts . I remove the yp app and mine force closed also when clicking the contact. It's crazy how much bloat ware came on this thing. I'd like to see a stock Samsung contacts.apk to see what else they hacked up
So just did this and now Contacts is missing from my app drawer and it wont launch from my launcher tray......... and I cant make calls the phone shortcut is gone.....

I have it, PM me you email addy I'll mail it over to you. I would upload it but I'm at work right now.
I haven't tested this on any of the custom ROMs, only the stock AT&T ROM. I'm not sure what they did with their Contacts.apk file. If you upload the one from your ROM, I can see if I can make the same mods that I did to the AT&T one.
Didn't work for me either, and also copied it over stock apk and don't have a backup. Using TPC V2 ROM. Any one have stock Contacts.apk for that rom?

Using Go Contacts EX from the market for now. It's a little much, but works for good as a replacement for stock.
Looked over in the dev section- will probably be flashing a new ROM soon anyway

Awesome, worked perfectly. Thanks.
I know how to change the defaults that is not my issue.
I came from the first Galaxy S running crayogen ICS and the messaging app on that is way better than the Samsung one, it just sucks.
I tired installing the apk from the crayogen rom but I keep getting an error.
When I try I get the this is a system app are you sure you want to continue and replace it. I then select install and just get a error Application not installed.
So I used root explorer, found the default samsung app, renamed it, copied over the other app with the same name and installed it from within the system folder and it worked, so it is now working but it doesn't look the same as it did on my old phone.
Any help?
This is the XT9 message app with dark background thy this install just like you did b4
couldn't get that one to work for some reason, did the same thing and kept getting unable to install error
Try Go SMS Pro?
I use GO SMS Pro also and its awesome! You are correct...The stock messaging app is god awful!
I use Handcent and it's way better than stock.
Instead of renaming the secmms.apk, make a copy and pt it on your sdcard. Delete it from your system/app folder, push the new apk to system/apk.
Reboot. It should bout to the Android is updating screen if it worked.

Thanks for that, but it still didn't work it defaults to the app but it still isn't working correctly and doesn't look like the old app I use to have and when I open settings it always crashes.
What I have done is disabled the default messaging app in settings, installed GoSms and using that as the default. Its not bad and better to adapt to but still miss the CyanogenMod messaging app I had on the I9000
Thanks for the replys
Have you modded the app at all? You might have to sign it before it will install/work
Name it Mms.apk

You need root explorer, then go into system/app give write permission top center and rename ones you don't want .back and move it to a safe place in case you ever want to swap them in future.

Did you install mod from an ics Rom. JB changed in that camera is integrated with gallery, only works if gallery is active.
The odex file below is part of the app structure so they go hand in hand. If you remove they go in pair.
In ics samsungcamera and secgallery are the apps. These are probably the mods and something like gallery4 not sure in JB cuz I don't have it.
I'm root and when I remove bloatware I use Titanium Backup I first freeze watch how phone behaves then delete after a few days. If you remove anything put it in sdcard somewhere safe and note permissions before you move it.

Hey mates, I got a question:
How can I modify the icons of an app? I want to modify the icons only from system apps....
I already searched this forum for a thread, but didnt find one, if you know i would be happy about a link
I know that there is an app that "changes icons of apps", but it only creates custom shortcuts, I need "real" new icons...
Hope you can help me

Quick and dirty method:
Download 7zip to your computer. Take the apk you want (camera, for example) onto your computer and open (not decompress) it with 7zip. Find any instances of icon.PNG within all the folders inside the res/ folder. Check their pixel dimensions. Ensure the PNG file you want to use is the same as the original file's. Copy New file and replace the original file in 7zip. Back out of the (example:camera) app using the back button in 7zip. That should do it. If it is an app like settings.apk or any other system dependant app, you need to flash it in recovery (best to just do it this way, regardless). Search the forum for instructions on that. If it is a system app updated via the market (gmail, maps, etc) you will have to redo this every time it updates.
Better method: find a thread here on how to theme, and change the above png using their instructions.
Wow thank you very much
it is systemapps that i want to change to original, i just came to the idea that i could also flash the original apps, I am stupid -.-
but i want to make my own theme anyways so thanks again

No prob. Read all you can! There is a lot of info on theming here, and several methods and programs available to help. I've tried several tutorials and did successfully make one theme.. the learning process is a bit painful. So start small and simple. Also an easy tip to remember: if you theme an app that is a paid app from anywhere, do not share it!!
I have no paid apps only a few books, but not really need them...
so, i wont even come to the idea to edit and share one
