S-off now what - HTC Aria Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Now that we have s-off well I don't yet. U have googled s-off to see what I could find out and sadly I didn't find the answers I was looking for. Yes we get full root and access to where we couldn't get to before. Correct me if I'm wrong. My question is what kind of things can we look forward to with our s-off devices? New super apps better roms?

First and foremost, those that couldn't root before are now able to with s-off. The reason I did it was the convenience of being able to mess with the /system partition without needing a computer, the ability to very easily flash alternative recoveries, splash screens, etc.

Unstable Temp Root.

Who here feels exhausted the way I do about the unstable temp root that doesn't last very long. How far is teamwin from achieving permanent root?
Sent from my Evo 3d that Chuck Norris touched.
It'll be done when its done..I appreciate their progress and their efforts..They busted down the wall, now they will clean up the mess..Temp root isn't for me and I knew this coming in..I know there is progress being made and that's all I care about at the moment.

I mean I absolutely understand the exploit they has accomplished and putting out a temp Root. Thank you for that by the way. I just want root already. There were so many things that I was doing with Og Evo. I just want that back.

Personally, I wouldn't rely on the EVO3D forum to stay abreast on news about rooting or anything. a certain Mod killed the developers desire to stick around here.
head over to the Sensation area, and you'll find that people have found ways to make the root stick 100% until actual reboot occurs and so on. that is where I'm staying up to date.
My temp root lasts until I reboot. I used the script found in the developers section and so far I've maintained root all day. At least, Titanium Backup works everytime I fire it up.

This technically should not be called "Temp Root", in a traditional sense.
Perhaps "Momentary Root"
I would be satisfied with the Traditional Temp root since 99% of my need for it is just to run Hot Spot and I don't care if it's a few clicks.

I didn't bother with temp root, not for me.
I do watch the sensation forum for real info due to the douche bag that ruined the chance to watch progress here.
I haven't really messed with it too much either. I'm just happy to see the progress coming so quickly. I thought it would be a while before we saw anything resembling root.

considering that haus has a ENG bootloader, why doesn't he just get temp root, then flash it onto the phone? They would have S-OFF.
I think all this time is being spent on a custom recovery made by Team Win that is supposedly packed with features. That is great and all....but I would prefer a faster release with less recovery features initially...before HTC beats them to the finish line.

Our bootloader is still write protected......So, even though we have the eng. loader from the early system dump, it still can't be flashed over the one that we have without cracking the write protection first.

That is interesting. Because root should allow you to change permissions. Getting temp root was the last hurdle at one point in xhausx's thread in the dev forum and the irc chats. Unless this "temp root" is really limited? I dunno

That was my understanding as well based on other android phones, however it seems HTC has substantially changed the design of the phone. I have followed a few of the developement threads, post for post since their inceptions and it turns out this is something entirely new that our devs are having to deal with. Sorry I can't find a link to where it was referenced......If someone could and post it that would be great.
Found it. This is copy & pasted from RVDigital's Faq sheet in the developement section:
What about S-OFF?
20:10 <@agrabren> Short of "where are we at for s-off".
20:10 <@joshua_> Sure. This device is eMMC, and also has a signed bootloaer. This means that S-OFF is a ways further out than just soft root.
20:11 <@joshua_> I can answer from my experience working closely with the AlphaRev X team that S-OFF on Sensation is goign to be harder than previous devices we've worked with.
20:11 <@joshua_> I think EVO 3D is very similar to Sensation, so I suspect the same to be true there.
20:11 <@joshua_> Someone asked me what eMMC is: Older phones (EVO 4G) are based on NAND flash; eMMC is a different type of flash.
20:12 <@joshua_> eMMC has different types of write protection that we haven't worked with before.
20:12 <@agrabren> And we plan to work together to solve some of these issues.
20:14 <@joshua_> (We've all been working pretty closely on this, including scotty.)
20:14 <@agrabren> you think this particular exploit will eventually lead to s-off, or is it too early to tell?
20:14 <@agrabren> (Sending this one to joshua_
20:15 <@joshua_> agrabren, the AlphaRevX exploit requires userspace root, and that was one of the big things holding it back on gbread
20:22 <@agrabren> Joshua: whats the difference between unlocked and s-off?
20:22 <@joshua_> S-OFF, unlocked, etc are fuzzy terms, especially now that we are on eMMC.
20:23 <@joshua_> S-OFF used to refer to a specific configuration in which the radio told hboot that it was "OK" to flash anything it wanted, essentially.
20:23 <@joshua_> (It also would refer to an ENG hboot.)
20:23 <@joshua_> On eMMC, that state no longer exists.
20:24 <@joshua_> unlocked is not really a term that applies to CDMA phones; in general, it refers to the ability to put a SIM card from a differnet carrier into your phone. the "NAND lock", or write protection, or anything like that does apply, and refers to being able to write /system
20:24 <@joshua_> (I think that's needed for Cyanogen.)
Team Win seemed pretty confident about releasing s-off to the masses or whatever. They made temp root sound like it ****s up your phone at one point. I hate having to use an exploit when ****ing htc can just release it to us in an official ota. I dont understand why they are waiting. Bunch of **** suckers. I really wish Team Win didnt tell everyone they had temp root so that HTC would still have more pressure on them. DONT FLAME BECAUSE OF MY OPINION!

[Q] EVO 3D lagging, not as fast and smooth as before.

So I rooted my EVO 3D with unrEVOked, and I noticed some problems, so I went back to 100% complete stock. So after a couple of days, I started getting SMS errors and radio interfearances. Well I got it fixed a while ago, but it also lagged once in a while when I'm typing a message, sometimes scrolling through screens, when I make my phone go to sleep, it like sleeps then wakes up right away, but now it's been like around two weeks, and I've been having a little more lag when I'm typing a message, or making the phone go to sleep, so I have to keep restarting the phone to make it run smooth and fast. I updated the phone already, and idk if its the update or the root that messed up the phone, but if anyone knows HOW this happened, and how I can get rid of this lag, then PLEASE help me out, cause this lag is pissing me off. Thanks.
Root your phone again and get rid of that sprint crap...problem solved..hehe

U can through HTC but u can't flash very much..just 2.3.4 stuff...do u have s-on or s-off?
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
Oh, well then how do I root it again? Cause I mean the lag pisses me off.
Go to htcdev.com and unlock your phone then find the Su zip in the dev section, then flash a recovery either twrp or cwm then u should be good...I'm assuming you have s-on correct?

Wait, and another thing, can I still root if I have 2.3.4??
Then yeah follow the directions from HTC then do the rest and flash 2.3.4 roms u won't be able to flash kernels yet but u will soon..should find some good roms from the devs

After you flash a recovery like twrp make sure you wipe everything including cache and the complete wipe of the phone before flashing any ROM, I think that's why your experiencing lag because you flashed over the stock ROM when you should of wiped everything before flashing.

Well, most people that first come here don't know what they are doing. I think what you meant to say is, if you don't even know where or how to find a guide on rooting and flashing then before attempting anything, there is one thing you should do first. READ!!!! Read the stickies in the dev forum. Read the links in the stickies in the dev forum. Use Google to find as much info on the internet as you can before attempting anything!!! Please, for your own good read as much as you can. We cannot hold your hand through it. You need to be able to do this on your own. Read until you become familiar with the terminology. Then if you still don't understand come back here and ask. If you do that we will understand your questions better and you will understand the answers better. We all started out knowing nothing about this. I read on these forums for 2 years before posting anything. I am by no means a professional, but I do understand how to search for and find the answers to my questions.

[Q] New to rooting.

So, I'm new to rooting, and, as such, after looking around the forums, I haven't found a similar thread (for the EVO 3D) about what ROM I should get. I've been looking through the CDMA forum at different ROMS, but I'm not sure which one to use. I won't be downgrading to 1.4 HBOOT, since I don't have a linux PC or the balls to do it, so I will be using the HTC Unlocker. All I want is to have the ability to use the Hotspot/tethering for free, because I'm not about to pay Sprint an extra 30 dollars/mo on top of my 65 dollar/mo plan right now.
So, if anyone has any help, I'd really appreciate it, because I have no idea what I'm doing.

My friend is saying there's more ways to root your phone other than the HTC Unlocker or the downgrade to 1.4 hboot. First off cause I don't have a linux PC, and my friend's friend said he used a program to root it on windows.
EDIT: After doing some research, I found this: http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-3d-hacks/how-to-downgrade-hboot-1-50-to-1-40-on-htc-evo-3d-new/ and this: http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-3d-hacks/how-to-root-htc-evo-3d/
I was wondering if these are reliable and they both work, mostly the Revolutionary app. Because I've heard that it's not all that amazing, but they must have updated it since I heard that.

Again, the HTCDev method will give you root, but not s-off. If you want s-off, you have to downgrade your hboot. And it doesn't take a while, unless you consider a few minutes to be a while.

Yeah, but the thing is, I've been comparing HTC Unlock with downgrade and root, the only difference, besides true s-off, is you aren't able to have you own splash screen with HTC Unlock (Big whoop.) So, instead of taking the time (albeit a few minutes) To downgrade my phone and to root it that way. I think I'll wait for ICS to come out, then for the HTC Unlock to update for it, since I rather like the way ICS will look, also as I've said before, all I really want is the ability to use the Sprint Hotspot without paying an extra 30 bucks. That and with the HTC unlock, I can still put on a custom ROM, if I so desire, once they've been updated for ICS.
Ohhhh... Where should I start.... Well for one s-off means a lot, not just splash screens... Which I love my custom splash screen btw.... Makes my phone extremely unique...
If I was in your shoes.. I would downgrade the hboot... Root it.. and install the tethering app... And be done with it... Regardless of when the ota comes out for ics.. that means very very little...
Once the ota does come out, ROM devs will be all over it, and custom ics roms will be popping up all over the place...
"All I really want is tether...." No its not.... Trust me once you dive into the rooted EVO 3d and you realize how the phone is suppose to run, not how it runs stock you will be glad you went through the trouble with the downgrade...
Do what you do, as long as your happy and enjoying your 3vo that's what's matters...

Well, my biggest problem with trying to downgrade is I'm having trouble finding a way to downgrade with just windows, since I don't have Linux. Unless I just didn't read it right, I think someone said that the link I posted about downgrading with windows is outdated?
EDIT: Why would I install a tethering app when, supposedly, I can use the Sprint Hotspot, which is supposed to be better than the tethering app? Also, I have quite a few apps on my phone and I'm not sure I'll be able to use them all still if I root my phone.

Well, for me, there's several issues with that. 1) I'm using a laptop that isn't mine for the time being, and i don't want to go and make a new partition. 2) If I were to wait till the parts for my new desktop to come in, I'd have to wait till the end of March anyways for a new processor to come out. 3) I've never even messed with Linux.

If I unlocked my bootloader is that enough to get the updates direct from HTC? or do I need to get a unlock code from ATT? or would I have had to buy a unlocked one straight from HTC?
First post! Thanks for starting a stupid question thread!
@ the poster above me, from what I've read so far, any unlocking of the bootloader will disable the OTA HTC updates. But I might have misread, I'm just learning about all this too and have read way too many pages of posts already. I'm sure someone in the know will chime in to confirm.
Now, my turn! I Just switched from iPhone to the HTC one and have really started considering flashing cleanRom 2.5. I have a kindle fire that I managed to root and get jelly bean on, so I'm not a total noob, but I wanna ask a few noob questions. Here goes:
I have spent a long time getting my phone setup the way I like it and when I flash cleanrom, is there a way to carry over the apps and things I've installed? No biggie if not, but I've got some saved game data on here already and some other stuff I'd rather not lose if there was an easy way to save. And is everything working correctly in the cleanrom to where I can still make zoes and use the camera, gallery, etc?
Also, any tips for getting this thing rooted? I was planning on downloading that "noob-proof" toolkit and going from there. I've read about people getting freezes and install issues using twrp, which scares me a bit because I have no idea what that other thing is (starts with a c) that people are using. and I read something Scott said that you should never do a system wipe or you could lose your backup?? I know I used to wipe the system, cache, and something else when I rooted my kindle but I never tried to go back to stock or even look to see if I had a backup file somewhere. maybe if there's a step by step guide you could point me to that I might have missed?
Thanks for the help, I'm glad I joined the forum!

No, unlocking the bootloader won't allow that. If we get s-off then changing the cid and flashing a stock developer edition Rom with a relocked bootloader should allow that if one so desired.
---------- Post added at 01:31 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:17 AM ----------
There is no "easy" way perse' to back that stuff up and carry over. There is a way I saw sometime back to root without unlocking the bootloader. Theoretically one could do that and use titanium backup... But I don't really know if it will save your game progress... And you will have to offload your titanium backup data to a computer or something before unlocking the bootloader because it will erase everything. The thing about not wiping system came about because of all the problems people have been having with aroma freezing. Some people seem to have it worse then others but the idea is if aroma screws up over and over you still have an os to boot into. I personally (cross my fingers) have had little trouble with that (maybe 1 freeze or 2 then it runs through all the way). I'd suggest leaving the system folder alone until you know how your phone reacts to aroma installs.

Good to know, would it effect anything if i got a unlock code? Also if i were to reflash the 1.26 RUU could i then grab them using the update in the menu section that is not labled att update?
Can I flash roms from other HTC one carriers?

Not sure about the unlock code but I suspect it would only be a SIM unlock to use on other carriers. Not sure it changes the cid. The other software update your talking about won't grab firmware updates from HTC... There was a software update pushed through that recently for the HTC media thing I read it was so media sharing could be turned on without having mobile hotspot activated.

Yes you can. I'm using Trickdroid currently, and my HTC One is an ATT version.

Root Help
I am having some issues rooting my phone.
I unlocked my bootloader successfully on the HTCdev site
I created a folder on my desktop called android, the folder has the fastboot application and "twrp.img" file
i boot my phone into fastboot (? sorry 100% new to this not sure if i said that correctly)
connect usb cable
command prompt cd desktop\android
then ....android>fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
then it reads...
C:\Users\Owner\Desktop\ANDROID>fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
error: cannot load 'twrp.img': Unknown error
Im not sure what im doing wrong, its probably something very stupid. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Probably a bad download of twrp
I did a back up and want to know if I need to flash the boot img and what I need to get the latest update?

Question about the forums

Can we use the HTC One section as well? Or are we limited to just the roms in the at&t forum? Thanks.

With an avatar like that, there are no limits:laugh:
For real though, it's all up to you and what you want to do. Roms from both will work, flash them at will and see what works best for you. There will be differences in some vs others, radio, firmware, etc..., but it's all good. S-off will give you unlimited opportunities. Happy endeavors.
One more thing. Are root manuals and other guides apply as well. Such as rooting and s off? It's kinda confusing to me. Thanks for the reply.

It doesn't really matter where you post. Most of these threads support both US Carriers and International versions of the HTC One

Unlock is done via www.htcdev.com, and S-Off is done via RR. Just make SURE you use the right version of RumRunner. It MUST match, or you will get into trouble quick. Now, here is the interesting part. You must be unlocked to use Rumrunner, but once you S-Off, you will be locked again. To do certain things you will need to re-run the unlock.bin, and re-unlock. Not a big deal, but just to let you know.
