[Q] New to rooting. - HTC EVO 3D

So, I'm new to rooting, and, as such, after looking around the forums, I haven't found a similar thread (for the EVO 3D) about what ROM I should get. I've been looking through the CDMA forum at different ROMS, but I'm not sure which one to use. I won't be downgrading to 1.4 HBOOT, since I don't have a linux PC or the balls to do it, so I will be using the HTC Unlocker. All I want is to have the ability to use the Hotspot/tethering for free, because I'm not about to pay Sprint an extra 30 dollars/mo on top of my 65 dollar/mo plan right now.
So, if anyone has any help, I'd really appreciate it, because I have no idea what I'm doing.

ViperRom for the win!!
Its fast, battery is great. And it has wifi hotspot!

If that's all you want, you don't need to flash a new rom. Just root and install the Wireless Tether app.

You can download a rom whenever you want. Just make sure you are rooted and have a recovery and the Flash Image GUI app installed before flashing

here, this guide will help you alot .

The app sucks. You should use the actually sprints hotspot app. Also I suggest not using image GUI but 4ext recovery

I vote Infectedrom. Its fast even without overclocking it. But if you do want to overclock check out chadgoodman's anthrax.

My friend is saying there's more ways to root your phone other than the HTC Unlocker or the downgrade to 1.4 hboot. First off cause I don't have a linux PC, and my friend's friend said he used a program to root it on windows.
EDIT: After doing some research, I found this: http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-3d-hacks/how-to-downgrade-hboot-1-50-to-1-40-on-htc-evo-3d-new/ and this: http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-3d-hacks/how-to-root-htc-evo-3d/
I was wondering if these are reliable and they both work, mostly the Revolutionary app. Because I've heard that it's not all that amazing, but they must have updated it since I heard that.

That's how I unlocked mine on boot 1.5 there's a video so its easier for people who don't know a lot and also don't have to install sdk but just a file which has all the files needed to root.

But the HTC Unlock method doesn't allow for s-off, which I guess I don't need. I mean, all I really want is the hotspot enables. I heard that the HTC Unlock method takes quite a while to run as well.

That second link is over a year old, and again, doesn't work for hboot 1.5. You have one and only one method:

Again, the HTCDev method will give you root, but not s-off. If you want s-off, you have to downgrade your hboot. And it doesn't take a while, unless you consider a few minutes to be a while.

K, well, after reading some stuff, I think it may be best to wait for ICS to come out and see what happens, because, apparently it should be coming out sometime soon, if I'm not mistaken.

And if you take the OTA ICS update, it could update the hboot and you may never be able to root it. If you are going to root, do it now.

Yeah, but the thing is, I've been comparing HTC Unlock with downgrade and root, the only difference, besides true s-off, is you aren't able to have you own splash screen with HTC Unlock (Big whoop.) So, instead of taking the time (albeit a few minutes) To downgrade my phone and to root it that way. I think I'll wait for ICS to come out, then for the HTC Unlock to update for it, since I rather like the way ICS will look, also as I've said before, all I really want is the ability to use the Sprint Hotspot without paying an extra 30 bucks. That and with the HTC unlock, I can still put on a custom ROM, if I so desire, once they've been updated for ICS.

Ohhhh... Where should I start.... Well for one s-off means a lot, not just splash screens... Which I love my custom splash screen btw.... Makes my phone extremely unique...
If I was in your shoes.. I would downgrade the hboot... Root it.. and install the tethering app... And be done with it... Regardless of when the ota comes out for ics.. that means very very little...
Once the ota does come out, ROM devs will be all over it, and custom ics roms will be popping up all over the place...
"All I really want is tether...." No its not.... Trust me once you dive into the rooted EVO 3d and you realize how the phone is suppose to run, not how it runs stock you will be glad you went through the trouble with the downgrade...
Do what you do, as long as your happy and enjoying your 3vo that's what's matters...

Well, my biggest problem with trying to downgrade is I'm having trouble finding a way to downgrade with just windows, since I don't have Linux. Unless I just didn't read it right, I think someone said that the link I posted about downgrading with windows is outdated?
EDIT: Why would I install a tethering app when, supposedly, I can use the Sprint Hotspot, which is supposed to be better than the tethering app? Also, I have quite a few apps on my phone and I'm not sure I'll be able to use them all still if I root my phone.

It's really not hard to get Linux. You can even partition your windows machine and run Linux alongside it. I prefer Linux. And why not? Android is Linux...

Well, for me, there's several issues with that. 1) I'm using a laptop that isn't mine for the time being, and i don't want to go and make a new partition. 2) If I were to wait till the parts for my new desktop to come in, I'd have to wait till the end of March anyways for a new processor to come out. 3) I've never even messed with Linux.

Revolutionary has stopped. The last update they made to the tool was about 2 months ago. Look at their site, then go to the bottom of the wiki page and take a look.
No update in 2 months= whatever you want to think.
They won't be finding a patch for the evo3d 1.5 hboot because they aren't looking.

I've talked to them as well, if anyone asks about any news on 1.5 hboot, they simply say no, then kick you out of irc. Why would they have any desire to put any effort into looking when htc released the unlock method? It's not going to happen, maybe next summer.

Considering the HTC unlock method has been released since roughly August and we find ourselves now in January with essentially 5 months have passed without an unofficial root method .. I would probably lean towards not counting on an unofficial root method.
Haven't seen any new information from Unrevoked or AlphaRevX regarding work on the EVO 3D as I'm sure there are some devices in existence which don't have any unlock method that might garner more attention ...
Most of that is just opinion and speculation based on personal experience. Might not be worth anything but figured I'd post an answer in the hope it might help! Good luck!
I know the only way now is the HTC method im holding out alil longer till someone comes out with a better method. I don't really want HTC knowing im rooted with the way they have it set up. Nothing is wrong going there route with it other then you warranty with them being void to a certain point.
Sprint doesn't seem to mind.
In due time there will be a root in a better way .

Even with having the 1.5 hboot, you are still able to flash roms and kernels without issues, just have to do it in a different way.
If your a person that enjoys the challenge (should be the quality of anyone who roots) you'll see past the issues and roll with the punches unrolled an easy way comes along.
Remember people, if your hear, you don't want it the easy way. You don't want to have everything done for you, find joy in getting your hands dirty and doing something challenging.
BTW, yes I have an EVO 3D WITH 1.5 HBOOT and everything is business as usual in the flashing department

took me 10 min after reading the instructions, and more because I don't use Windows (Linux only) so I had to load up my VM for some things. But the unlocking of the Bootstrap and the rooting process is quick.
Yes having S-Off is a huge difference, but just because I don't have it doesn't mean that my life with the phone ends there. I can still flash kernels, ROMs and anything 1.4 hboot could do, I just have to load recovery via fastboot and I'm all set.
Yes, maybe I can't use ROM manager to make my life easy, and maybe to flash I will always be (for now) tied to having to use a computer for better results, but in reality, what?? I have access to a computer most of the time, and if I don't, I wait because or I may be in the field doing training or something else and I don't want to invest my time in flashing at all.
Another way is that if you don't want to use the computer just remove the boot.img from the zip (I believe its that one) file of the ROM your wanting to flash and I believe this should let you flash right from Recovery and then you can access fastboot to flash the Kernel side.

How about nadroid backup and restore functionality on hb 1.5 i mean i assume we would run into issues with this if we want to restore to a previous version of a rom with a non stock kernel.
Sometimes i go flash happy and end up with a boot loop situation but all is usually well because i just wipe and restore.

I believe you would have to backup everything except the boot area. You would have to flash the kernel first before restoring the backup.
Note: I haven't tested this, but simple logic says it should work. If I'm wrong, please correct me.

Hboot 1.5 wifi tether no root, is it possible?

I just got my gf a new 3d and it came with the latest hboot. The only thing she uses root for is to tether her nook color. I want to know if there is a way to do this without root as she is happy on the stock ROM and she its hesitant to have me tinker with her phone. I have a 3d also but was fortunate to have it on 1.4 so it is roores and on cleanROM which is awesome. I've searched for this but nothing I've found seems to work. Have tried Foxfire and wifi tether but both were a no go with both wifi and Bluetooth.
Thank you guys in advance

no...without having to pay sprint there is no other way... you must unlock the bootloader ad install the superuser app...to gain free wifi tether.... its not hard to do its fairly simple and almost un brickable bc of the partitions you can not write to with hboot 1.5

they will make it compatible with Amaze ICS, they did it for the sensation and Rezound, so there will always be a way to get S-OFF when the official release is available
so the only disadvantages of not having s off and getting ics is
because so many people had made it sound like your phone will explode if its not s off

S-Off can be reflagged to S-On. HTC keeps a record of unlocked, which does void your warranty if they prove used, which they can't and it is not in the fine print that they have the right to find out if used. So, in theory, you're pretty much safe for warranty which has been proved in Rezound and Sensation forums for unlocked users. The only problem is if you crash before it is able to get S-On through ADB. If they actually check, you may end up with an insurance claim instead. Its not as bad or harsh as they make it sound. We make up maybe 1% of Android users and a slightly larger percent of HTC users.
Edit: An HBOOT can be edit to remove tampered, show locked and then device reflagged to be proper.

Idk about "we" as in evo lte, but yes, one x and one s will...sprints probably going to be late, but I'm sure we can depend on the developers to pull something when its released

Even if we get it, I'm still not not updating. Not until I have S-OFF...

Very cool! Can't wait for JB! Sad how the OneX+ doesn't have 2gb Ram and 1080p screen....

Yeah, but only fixes to problems. Nothing like this yet. We'll see if they pull through. Like I said though, either way, I'll be waiting for S-OFF.
I hope the focus on fixing the LTE issue with these phones before worrying about JB.

That was supposed to be addressed in the last update. What problems are you having?

people that are stuck in s-on land (for now) make it sound like there phone is stuck in some sort of world where you cant do anything...you can still get updated radio, flash kernels and roms. hell awesome sauce kernel uses an s-on installer so you can flash in recovery, meanrom you can flash and it will flash the kernel for you (in recovery). to update your radio just relock, ruu, unlock, root, install...done! :cyclops: it is a few extra steps but your phone is not rendered usless...and all this talk i think is starting to scare people that it is. (just my 2 cents) flame on!

Tell me about it. People have a fascination with S-off, thinking their phones will magically start doing something they haven't already been doing.
People listen and wake up, we can do the same thing as people with s-off do. We just have to go about it a different way.

I heard that if you have soff your phone can make you pb&j sandwiches.

Look, it's not that I'm stuck in some mindset that S-OFF is the key to everything. I understand that I can go through the HTCdev method, but I choose not to. My preference is S-OFF.

So you will just not root your phone till you get s-off? Bc when the phone first came out all there was, was HTC dev unlock. Sitting with stock Rom is no fun...
And if you are not rooted or rooted it maybe a few version of android before soff comes out (if it does) which will keep you on old software and really not take advantage of new goodies

I get what you're saying. But my preference is to have S-OFF. I don't have to update right now. I'm sitting on 1.15, and just waiting. Granted, there are features that I'm looking for from Jelly Bean that I want to have, which is why I want to root my phone. But, if Jelly Bean comes before we get an S-OFF method, then I may just update and let it go to whatever is there. I'd prefer to have S-OFF though. That's how I've gone with my EVO 3D, so I'm accustomed to that method.
I understand, it is "easier" but there are a lot of people on xda now thinking it us the end if the world ... All I want people to understand is that there are work arounds. To each their own

I can understand people not wanting to update due to S-on. I mean, OTA update or running RUU to update firmware will also update hboot, which someone who's been hanging in there praying 1.15 is almost cracked,..well the last thing they're gonna wanna do is update hboot.
Hell, accepting S-on and the workarounds may be the only thing to do. With the amount of hboot updates HTC is releasing, I have to imagine anyone working on S-off has probably already just thrown up their hands.
I'm S-off, but still haven't updated radio or firmware due to the fact that at this point, downgrading bricks.
Sorry for OT

The fact that HTC has updated the HBoot 3 times since the release of the phone doesn't make things difficult. If anything, it would indicate that HTC is finding holes in their HBoot, and just patching them as they update the software. There are a lot of people sitting on 1.15 right now waiting for something to happen. I'm sure there's someone working on cracking it, it's just a matter of time, and how many people are possibly working on it. I'd like to think that there is someone working on it, but it's still not being put out there that it actually is by anyone. That's what people are all up in arms about.
Not necessarily, they may be adding extra support for in-house development, adding support for extra hardware, or they could be just cleaning up the code from the last update
