Flashing GB Radio - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

im a little confused on what the purpose of the seperate download is.
does the GB build not come with the radio?
what does this file do?
do i use RSD to flash the sbf or cwm?

The radio (I think) is giving it the newest connections. The gb comes with files but doesn't include data things.... OTA's do because radios comes with package from the carriers . I think lol

I used rsd and did the sbf cause the zip wasn't working for me through cmw. But that's just me
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App

Worked for me both ways. Think of it as the firmware for the cellular radio itself. Newer typically means the latest rules / methods for connecting to the towers so it usually is a benefit to have it.

So is it possible to install with cwm? If so does it matter if I get it from the brief mobile page or Kenneth's topic here?
Actually for that matter, is it included in Kenneth's gingerbread ROM? I doubt it is, since he provides a seperate download for it.
Thanks!
Sent from my Gingerbread Matrix!

Unzip the file, and fastboot the img file.
The zip file cannot be directly applied via CWM.

Ok, I'm going to try it right now. Thanks again!

You can always do it using RSD Lite!
Use this SBF of the Radio by kenneth - http://bandbinnovations.com/xda/gingerbread/4591radio.sbf

ok thanks for the info.
once we flash the radio once, do we need to re flash it for every update? or should it stay the same?

I flashed the .sbf with RSD Lite.

No!
The radio stays updated! so no need to flash it again after each update!

Radios are the "firmware" image that is used by the cellular hardware to interface to the software. It tells the cellular radio how and what to do, and listens for the software to tell IT what to do. So basically it is a go between.
However, while the RIL (Radio Interface Layer) is generally backwards compatible, it is recommended to use gingerbread radios with gingerbread, and froyo with froyo.
I've had odd things occur on HTC & samsung devices when using froyo radios with gingerbread roms, such as incorrect signal strength, increased switching between GSM / WCDMA (3G) and odd call quality and dropping issues. Albeit it WILL work, i've always kept them together.
As to trying to flash it with CWM, some people will tell you thats a bad idea in the HTC world, while planet samsung has absolutely no problem whatsoever with it. Motorola given its nature, I'd recommend using moto-fastboot flash radio radio.img or RSD to flash a radio, but only because thats the only way I've ever done it.

[Q] Why do we need ODIN?

Hey there peeps,
I'm sorta new to the fascinate scene and coming from the OG Droid I'm really wondering why do we need to upgrade our modems with ODIN. On the Droid I never had to do anything outside of cwr and I flashed all sorts of radio upgrades and roms. So did the Droid not need modem upgrades? or is this just a difference in the size of the dev force?
That's the way it works. You flash the radio with Odin, and everything else can be flashed with CWM
Yeah, as a Droid and Eris user, I had some confusion about that at first. It's one of those things that Samsung messed up on the GalaxyS devices along with RFS and MediaScanning and other software differences from Vanilla, Sense, or Blur. The Modem is the same as a radio zip, except you need to flash it through Odin.
Call me crazy, but I'm glad we have a tool like Odin, because even if the OS gets totally hosed, you can always restore with Odin. Unless you flash incorrectly with it, it's nearly impossible to brick these phones. I consider it a bonus, not a burden.
Posted from my EB01 SuperClean Fascinate with Voodoo
The reason that Odin is required is because we don't know how to flash anything besides modem deltas through recovery, and all we have is full modem.bin files, not delta files.

Agreed with this. It's nice to be able to completely revert to stock when you really screw your phone up or are having big problems. Wiping in CWM never actually wiped for me, so I would need to Odin. Then you Odin CWM and install a ROM, and you're rooted and running a ROM again.
I love the Odin safety net.
I agree, ODIN's safety net has saved my ass on more than a few occasions.
I wonder why no one has gotten their hands on the "Phone" data? Has it never changed since release, or does it have some sort of protection?
Odin Rocks! You don't need it just for the radio. You can flash roms via odin or the more advanced program (I forgot its name right now because I'm having a brain fart trying to Partition my SD) but it will let you flash only specific area's of a rom image like radio, boot, data, and all other aspects.
I'd rather flash Via ODIN in Downloading Mode. But if you want to use CWM to make backups and what not, use CWM. Odin is only a must have as well as a JIG for fixing those "oops" moments. Which I've done a lot of lately trying to find the right rom for me.
Agree!! Odin has saved my butt many times...

Shouldn't it be fairly easy to just check file deltas (like before and after)? and then build an update.zip around it?

What should I do

Hi guys;
I want to update my Atrix, but I don't know what path to take?
a) Through the OTA 4.5.91...
b) Unlocking the bootloader, and then upgrading to GingerBread via Custom Roms...
I really need your help, because I am a newby in this whole area...
Right now I am runnig:
4.1.57 ATT
Android Version: 2.2.1
Build Number: GingerBlur 2.5
Your still on 57?

Depends what you want to do with your phone. If you like testing out custom roms and stuff then go the way of unlocking the bootloader and flashing one of the custom GB roms. If you want a stock phone with some minor root modifications then flash ota and root. Just beaware if you do the ota build you cannot flash back to froyo (not sure why anyone would but just to warn you)

can you refeer me to the posts where I can unlock the BL and then install a custom Rom
Yeah I am on 4.1.83 and Android 2.2.2.
I want to upgrade as well. Everything is stock currently.
I want to be able to do Cynogen later so I think I need to unlock and flash a custom rom.
So I am like the op and need to know where to go. There is so much argument and misinformation on this forum my head hurts. Just read for an hour and am more confused.
All I know is i dont want to do the OTA update lol!
HOwever I downloaded it already and my phone keeps asking me to install it...
DOes anyone know how to remove that?
Well, first, I suggest you do NOT flash the OTA update.
I recommend that you use the Pudding file in the Development sub-forum to unlock your device. There are video and text guides floating around how to unlock.
If you're not wanting to try out any ROMs yet, I suggest Kenneth's ROM. It's the OTA update, except without the risk of hard bricking if you ever need to flash down.
If you are all feeling adventurous, you could flash an Overclock kernel (I recommend Faux's 1.1GHz OC). You can also flash Ninja ROM v0.4.5. It's super fast.
@mercilus if you freeze the FOTA app in Titanium Backup, I think that stops it.
Here's the guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1167373
@artemalek I see that you're on 1.5.7, that means you have an AT&T branded device. You'll need to flash the AT&T version of Pudding for your unlock.

Now my phone wont turn on? When I hit the power button/hold it all I get is blank screen.
It doesnt try to turn on or anything?
Did i mess up the phone permanently? crap... just what i was trying to avoid..
any advice?
How full was your battery? And if your phone was hard bricked, you'd be seeing an error.

Battery was at like 80% when I last looked. So it was more when I started, and I did not leave the phone watched the whole process up til the point where it wont turn on anymore. So I doubt it lost all that battery in that brief 5 minute time.
Its been plugged in since still and no response from power button.
Everything was completely stock when I started.
Update: I just noticed when I take out my battery and plug in the charger I do get a green light as long as battery is out. When I put it in and plug in I get no lights. Not sure if thats helpful or means anything... (Just noticed its only with the USB charger I get the green light and not AC charger. The battery must be out)

Flashing 3g and 4g radios

I am getting ready to root my bolt. I will use the revolution tool.
I want to flash thunderstick genII Rom. In the instructions they say to flash both radios. Is this needed if the phone being rooted has already been updated OTA? Shouldn't the radios be already updated?
Secondly, if it is safe to flash roms with Rom manager, will it know to flash the two radios?
Thanks!
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
Radios are flashed in hboot ONLY! Look for a tutorial in the stickied topics
Sent from my TBolt using my f***king thumbs...
From looking at the original post for the thunderstick genII Rom it is a sense gingerbread ROM. It will use "MR2+" radios most likely (please don't make add the disclaimer... I'm not responsible for you turning your phone into a paper weight). They will be MR2 or MR2.5 etc.
Long story short, you should use what the dev. of the ROM suggests for the radio. It typically gives the best performance, least chance of bugs, and best battery life for the ROM. Follow the instructions in the post using HBOOT (Power on with the volume down pressed).
From the original post:
"install these radios
To do so,
1 - Downloaded the "CDMA" first file below to the ROOT of your SDCARD,
2 - Name the file PG05IMG.zip and reboot to your boot loader.
3 - Then follow the the prompts to install the update. Delete the file immediately after reboot.
4 - Repeat these steps for the second file "LTE". And you will have a upgraded radio that will work great with this ROM."
Not sure if the address space is accessible from CWR for radios, so you have to use hboot. It can be dangerous. Follow the steps, and if it is you first time, do the research!!!! There are much more involved guides.
I'm guessing that since radios and roms are flashed in different modes - hboot and recovery - devs can't include radios?

They wouldn't even if they could. There would be so many pissed users it wouldn't be funny. I'd be one of them. Nobody like flashing radios because its a far riskier deal.
Well to get thunderstick going I need to do both radios.
The tuts for flashing radios made it seem like flashing any other thing. Now you have me questioning doing this. This Rom is what I want from my phone...a tweaked sense rom.
If I'm right CWM let's you get to hboot to flash radios, right. And it let's you get to recovery to flash the Rom.
Jeez I came from a iPhone 3g and Jailbreaking was easy compared to this.

For some reason I've notice a lot of people calling RomManager by "CWM" lately and for some reason it annoys me. ClockworkMod is the "company name" Koush uses to identify his apps/products. The app you are referring to is RomManager and the recovery is called ClockworkMod Recovery.
Anyway, neither CWR nor RomManager deal with hboot. You can place the file on your sdcard and manually boot to hboot (Pwr+VolDwn or the advanced power menu in some roms). Full instructions for this should not be needed here since they are all over the place including the pinned Q/A thread at the top of this subforum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220484
I'm sure this will come off harsher than it was intended. I just wanted to throw those things out there. Anyway, welcome to Android

Thank you for laying all that out there. I really cannot endorse what Absolute_Zero has to say about calling things by their proper names. When people don't do that, it gets VERY confusing when you try to help them.
Concerning ROM Manager, I don't see how it serves any useful purpose. Fixing permissions can be done just as well through a script like ScriptFusion or ClockworkMod Recovery. I know of no ROM dev that endorses flashing, wiping, backing up, or recovering through ROM Manager, which is a nice way of saying DO NOT USE ROM Manager. It's fairly reliable for flashing recoveries, but I've had issues with it even doing that right.
Just follow the instructions I've laid out for flashing radios. I've included all the links to every radio there. If you follow my directions, I can promise you with 99.9% certainty that your radio flash will go perfectly. It's nothing to be afraid of and nothing to really concern yourself with. Just don't go looking for the easy way of doing everything. This isn't a Motorola device and there's a lot more you can do outside of an app than with an app.
Actually being harsh is cool. When I said CWM I meant the recovery. I should have been more clear.
I will stay away from Rom manager and learn to flash the big boy way.
My last question is this...my SD card is pretty messy. What is the best advice to clear out the card after flashing thunderstick?

The best way is to clean it up before flashing. Some ROMs install directories to the SDcard, but those should be clearly named. There's not really anything there that you can do that will render the phone junk. For me, it's just been a process of sorting through all the stuff, backing it up, formatting the card, and dropping the stuff I do want back on it.
Is there an option to format the SD card during flashing?
I have backed up my photos and any documents. After I copy over any videos I took, I would clear it out.
After installing a dozen or more apps, the card looks like a mess.
There's three folders with music in it, etc. Why can't there be an app folder with subdirectories for each app?

RomManager will only recognize CWR as being installed if RomManager itself is what was used to flash it.
I'm dealing with this same thing (flashing Radios). I recently rooted my device (after having it since release) and froze the bloat. [Q] Everything FCing

Hey, everyone. I've been having this problem a lot... when I was on CM7, about once a month everything would force close. First an app (xScope, Twicca, anything), then GApps, then my keyboard... the phone starts FCing everything within about an hour of being turned on. In the past, I've just fully wiped the phone... I'm on Pool Party now (the version before the newest one right now), and everything is FCing again. Is there a solution that isn't just "wipe everything?"
Did you make any drastic changes before it started force closing everything or has it been that way since you flashed the new ROM? Or was your ROM working fine in the past and it mystically started happening
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
This just mystically started today. It's been about a month and a half since the last time this happened, on CM7.
My phone got all screwed up one time when I installed either a bad gapps zip or the wrong one and I ended up having to wipe everything and start over to get out of that mess, although it's weird it randomly is happening to you.

Ah nice. I was hoping to see a stable ICS. So, it says there's no video hardware acceleration.. does that mean future updates will bring hardware acceleration for the fasciante? like h264 mkv's, or h264 mp4's, or even mpeg4 avi's? tsm/jt's rom doesn't have good video hardware support, MX video has to use SW almost all the time.
So I think I would like to check it out, but I wish I knew about it before I went through all the trouble last night to reflash and reinstall all my apps.. [was up till 3am working on it] lol
any major troubles with it? Also what CWM do I use? Perhaps the one on the CM7 fascinate wiki? [cwm4-bml-i500.tar] or the cwm 5.0.2.7 in vanilla gb?
Also do I need to odin it to anything? or can I go from what I've got now [tsm pool party]?
I've had no major troubles with the past 2 builds and definitely build 6 is the best. Not exactly sure what is meant by the hardware acceleration but everything about this ROM runs smooth. As for cwm version, just install any cwm and the ics ROM has its own that it will install. Once it installs it's own, it is recommended to not flash a new kernel once it does it's own because the one it puts on has stuff built in to make all the features work.
As for Odin, hmm....too be safe I would go back to stock and then throw a cwm kernel on. Then do a wipe data + cache and install build 5. Make sure it is running good then just clear cache and install build 6
Do a backup before you start all this just to be safe!!

I'm not sure if you have to or not, probably don't actually I'm not sure why I said that lol...I guess in my situation I had troubles along the way so I started at build 3 and worked my way up.
just go straight to build 6 and in that case wipe data and cache. And I still would go to stock first because I read somewhere that it best to go from the bml based versions to mtd.
I would then update your radio to EH03 if it isn't already

awesome... yes I was planning on Odin'ing again, because I've found it gives the rom you flash after it better chance of survival.
It is a inconvenience though because I have to boot up W7 [Dual boot Linux] every time I wanna Odin.. haha, same thing back when I used my ipod touch for iTunes.
So what radio does the ics build 6 have? can they not use the eh03 radio [I'm assuming is superior to whatever it has]? And I assume heimdall can flash the "modem.bin" radio that I untar from the "CI500_VZW_EH03_GB_CM.tar.md5" like so:
heimdall flash --modem modem.bin
right?
The ics builds don't have a specific radio, it doesnt mess with the radio you currently have, so whatever radio you have now is what you will have after the rom. I just didn't know what radio you had now, and the reason i recommend the EH03 is because it is the newest stock radio from verizon - meaning it is definitely reliable.
I'm not sure what you mean by untaring the .tar file. Odin uses the .tar file, so do not untar the file, just leave it the way it is. Unless you mean you can specifically take the radio.tar file out from the other tar file. I have the EH03_radio.tar file so if you wanted it i could upload it somewhere and give you the link. Odin back to any stock firmware, then load a cwm recovery as well as the EH03 radio.
EDIT: Here you go http://dl.dropbox.com/u/32493357/eh03_radio.tar.md5

sorry... what I meant is, I know how to extract the EH03 modem.bin file out of the ".tar.md5" file for the stock Verizon eh03 firmware.
I know how to flash CWM with heimdall, but I guess I do not need to flash the radio [ right? ] because I just came from a fresh eh03, completely wiped, cache, dalvik, and..... urmm, it is showing the same animation I had back on "Eclipse ROM" for Droid X2... ew... For some reason I do not like that particular animation. I guess you can change the boot animation though?

Use the program "odin" to flash all your .tar.md5 files. You don't extract those files, you leave them in the .tar format. I gave you the link to download specifically the eh03 radio, but if you have it already on your phone you dont need to worry about it. As for the boot animation, the ics rom will install its own boot animation so no worries there.
You know about odin right? It is definitely the easiest way to flash kernels, radios, and stock firmware.

Restore to stock

I'm sorry if the answers to my question have been answered but I can't find them after searching for a few days.
I need to send my Atrix in for a repair or replacement. It is unlocked and rooted running Turl's CM9 right now. Obviously I can't send it back as is, so how should I go about everything?
Flash an SBF, flash a fruitcake rom, or something else that I haven't stumbled upon?
The only threads I could find are from a year ago and so much has changed since then. I just want to be sure I go about this the correct way. And should I go through ATT or Motorola? I know my phone is still under warranty with both.
Thanks for any help! It is much appreciated!
"Always have an exit strategy"
You can flash a fruitcake but the "unlocked" text will remain so you can hope for the best.
Or you can try an SBF (Disclaimer: at your own risk).
How long have you had it? Usually if you have had it for more than 30 days AT&T won't help but if you are still under "warranty" with them I would try AT&T first.
If you can't find a way to return your phone back to stock you can try Motorola, they might just overlook the modifications you have done.... or they might charge you a service fee...... or they might just send the phone back to you. It really depends on who ever is processing your claim and the mood they're in.
Also, please don't start multiple threads on the same topic.

OK thanks. I had read that if I use the Motorola Software Update tool it will erase the "unlocked" text. I don't know how true that is though.
And sorry about the multiple threads, its just annoying not being able to use half my keyboard in portrait. Just was hoping for some quick answers.
Thanks again for the quick response

I had restored a few times to stock.
I do that:
Reboot in fastboot mode and fastboot - w, fastboot erase system, fastboot erase cache, fastboot erase preinstall.
Turn phone off and pull out sim card and sd card.
Reboot in rsd mode (olding vol+ at boot) and flash your sbf with rsd lite.
That's all.

Ok, you don't happen to have a stock sbf file? I can't find one anywhere.
Also, why is it that we shouldn't flash sbf files? It seems that people have success with them but everyone keeps saying not to do that. But I can't find a stock flashable zip and the fruitcake links are dead so sbf seems to be my last resort.
I'm just stuck scratching my head because of all this confusion?

Look in the firmware superthread, in the last pages someone have a link in his sign to a page of many stock sbf files. I found there my updated one.
I always got succes with rsd lite but only with a full wipe with fastboot before it say "pass" at the end. Otherwaise it say to 'manually reboot'.
Don't know why people say "do not use sbf", probably there is a reason, but i think it is the only way to remove the 'Unlocked'
Here links to froyo sbf
and to GingerBread sbf
also you need to delete any folder about apps that need root to work and su folder and anything that presume you have rooted your phone

Depending on what build you are currently on you do not want to "downgrade". So if you are on a Gingerbread build (4.5.91 or 4.5.141) do not flash the Froyo SBF. And probably if you are on the 4.5.141 build (2.3.6), it is not recommended to flash the ".91" build. That is where the issues can occur.
I have also used RSD Lite to flash back to stock (a few times) but always use caution. So, for @scarbutt11, do you happen to remember what build you were on before you unlocked the bootloader and flashed a custom ROM?

Yeah, I was running stock 4.5.91/2.3.4. I'm on a cm9 build now. I'm not sure if that will matter at all for flashing back to GB? I know I tried cm7 to see if it was just cm9 causing the problems, but it seems it is hardware related.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA
Yeah, it depends on what "Official" build you were last on. Since you were on "4.5.91" then I would just use that SBF. Like someone else mentioned, it is possible to use RSD Lite, just use caution.

Took a little pulling of my hair while I waited but fastboot wipe and then flashing the stock sbf worked like a charm. I am back on stock GB, the unlocked text is gone and now I can hopefully get my phone fixed or replaced.
Thank you so much @live4nyy and @LeroyVold!!! Without you guys I would have been still scratching my head. I owe you both big time
No problem man, i need to do the same.
my touchscreen is more and more often unresponsive, so i'm flashing my stock sbf as i write.
Finally got a chance to swing by the AT&T store. They replaced the phone no problem thanks again guys!

i need to do the same. im sending this phone in and already got my new atrix sitting here.
Freaking Motorola phones, they break without you even touching them. I gotta figure out how to send mine to att as well.
u need to do a write up in here of how u did it. it might be redudant to some but to others like myself, it will be like having my hand held doing a scary process...your guidance as having it done yourself would help...with a how to..

For free, I bought the phone through them less than a year ago. All I said was that the screen was unresponsive and they looked at it for less than 10 minutes and then said they would replace it for me.

Thats not a bad idea. I have never done one before but now that I'm thinking about it I am sure there are others that need to do what I just did. I will try to write one up in the next few days. Thanks for the idea!
