Why does the display use so much battery? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Mainly on this phone, but also an in general question. It's used 70 percent for this cycle which is shocking. And it's not more than half bright ever and usually on low anyways.

I assume its because the screen is huge
Sent from my HTC Thunderbolt

because it takes a lot of power to display/render your screen just as it does on any screen/monitor?
obvious reply is obvious.

Because you use it

Powering the screen is like running an incandescent light bulb, the rest of the phone like LEDs. To put it into perspective. I average 80 to 85% screen usage, but I am OCD and fiddle with my phone constantly.

You do understand that when it says display ---> 70% battery.. it doesn't mean that 70% of the battery is being used for display right?
It only means that whatever chunk of battery is being used.. 70% of that is being used by the display.. which is not surprising because running the display takes actual running of light emitting elements.

What brightness are you set at?

Hey xda,
I'm curious as to what you all use for your screen brightness settings. For the duration of my ownership of the fascinate, I've kept it at the lowest possible setting. I'm wondering if that's really doing that much for my battery life. I'm contemplating turning it to auto.
What do you guys think about screen brightness as it compares to battery life. Is the screen not lit with LEDs? If I'm not mistaken, a typical LED could run for like 40 years on a single AA battery.
I am on auto with GPS, Data, and sync on all time. I use it pretty heavily I would say. Nothing like hours at a time but 15 min here, 5 there, 10 there. I get about 16 - 18 hours out of my phone.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering if I should keep GPS on too. I mean as long as I'm not actively using it for navigation, is it really going to be draining any battery life?

Adryn has stated "Keep GPS off" for better battery life. Idk if you are using SC tho, but this would apply to any.

Thanks for the response. So what you're saying is you leave the brightness high, but you know that's detrimental to your battery life?

Yep...but i'll sacrifice in favor of beauty for a loss of thirty min. Of use
how long an LED runs on a AA depends, some might run a day (not 40 years), others less than an hour, and the most powerful ones need multiple D batteries just to turn on. these phones have a SAMOLED screen, broken down into: Super Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode. the important part here is the organic. instead of having a single, or a few LEDs behind or around the screen, the screen uses an organic (not organic like the meaningless buzzword, but no ****, it's organic cells) compound for each colour. these organic compounds produce light when electrically charged, and only when a colour is displayed. this gives you the possibility of a truly infinite contrast ratio, and brilliantly rich colours.
I leave mine on auto.
Was using the lowest setting, but I'm now using auto setting.
I normally have it at its lowest setting unless I'm outside. I used to have it on auto, but it didn't work exactly like I wanted. Now that the notification bar brightness feature was added with Froyo, I just use that to adjust the brightness without having to open up settings.
As long as you don't have the screen on for minutes at a time, the difference between automatic brightness and the lowest setting is minimal. I switch to automatic for days that I tend to be outside a lot, but I normally leave it on the lowest setting because I occasionally go on binges where I read the news when I'm bored. If I don't do that too much and don't have any phone calls that last over 15+ minutes then I get about 48 hours of battery life on JT's AOSP ROM.

[Q] Display using 66%?

Hello, my first post and android phone. Anyway, I've been looking around and noticed most peoples display only uses around 30% whereas mine uses 66-70% consistently. I have my screen brightness to 10% as well so I'm not sure how that can be. Can anyone shed any light on this? Battery life seems to be alright so far.I've only charged twice so far and second time I'm at about 5 hours in and I'm at 68% battery left. I think the display is killing the battery more than it should be.
Thanks.
Depending on what you do, screen uses more or less battery If you play a game that uses a lot of phone's power, it will take more battery, therefore leading to less percentage usage from the screen.
If your battery life is okay, then you're alright
i think you just havent looked long enough. many many people have their display showing in the list as 60-80% more often than not. and my nexus one also has the display around 75%, each day, every day, for a year. the display is just always the highest.
the only way its low is if you use standby the entire time and dont turn your screen on for more than 2 minutes.
Okay, that sounds about right. It just seems weird. I haven't really had a chance to really do anything except browse the internet and download apps from the market. I haven't even gotten a chance to play any games. The display just doesn't ever seem to go below 60% while I see screenshots of other people's battery usage and they are all 30%. Crazyness I say.
66% ....
The mark of the devil burn it !!!!!!!
Yeah I was wondering about this as well.
I have no idea if this is normal? Running Cognition S2 v1.07.
The battery does run down pretty quickly, but I'm using it quite heavily at the moment as it's new.

yeah just give it some time, you will adjust to your new device. i promise it seems very normal so far.
as a test do some over night standby tests and check your numbers in the morning.
It is surely relative to how long the phone has been on and what else has been using power.
66% of a little battery life, isn't as bad as 66% of the whole battery life,
??I think I know what I mean

Anyone else having high display usage?

Okay so battery life on this phone in my opinion is okay. On average I get 12 hours and my phone is completely dead however when I go to battery usage (even if I don't use the phone alot) display is always above 50% -80% I'm not sure why this is so high when i don't keep the screen on that much and i have the brightness completely off. Could this be the culprit of my battery dying faster than it should? I usually send over 300 texts daily about an hour of internet and 30 mins of browsing xda while having auto sync and background data on.

The display is the primary thing that is putting the hurt on the battery. It is not the culprit for causing any problems.
The usage percentage shows what percentage of the battery particular things use. The items listed will always add up to 100. It doesn't mean your screen is killing your battery, just that its the highest consumer which it always will be. Depending on what you do with your phone, 50-80% seems about right considering anything you do on your phone requires the screen being on.
The display takes the most usage
76%. Seems normal to me.
mine always uses 70-80% of my battery
i say that's excessive high when all the other stuff it lists that use the battery take up only 1% or 2% each at the end of a charge
but folks say high usage is normal
Yeah never under 60].

Yeah high display in all my family android devices.
Wife's HTC Hero rooted CM7
Daughter's Samsung Epic Stock Froyo
and My HTC Evo 4G rooted (happen on every rom available custom or stock)
I'm starting to think that high display is normal across most android devices IMHO.
I'm ALWAYS around 76% for my display. But like others have said when everything you do on it involves you turning the phone ON plus navigating through everything, and then view it makes sense. Want to watch it drop? Listen to Google Music, for a bout 6 straight hours. Screen shuts off but you finally use something more than the screen. but even by doing that the display still was #1 usage for me.
Mine is only at 43%.

Copy/Paste from another post of mine:
That's normal. Trust me. The screen takes so much of the battery, that in the time it's off, the other parts of the system can't catch up in terms of battery use... That's why some people can get standby times of 3+ days on their OG Evos, it's cause they don't ever turn the screen on.
On my phone, I've had the screen on for 10 min 39 seconds out of 5 hours 51 minutes, its at 42% and my battery is at 88%...
That means in 10 minutes and 39 seconds, my screen by itself drained about 5% of my battery, and it took the rest of the system almost 6 more hours to drain another 7% off while I was sleeping. (Note, I have auto brightness cause I ain't scared of plugging my phone in a lot.)
The 70% you are all seeing doesn't mean the phone's screen was on 70% of the time, it just means that 70% of your battery drain is the screens fault... Try this: When you charge your phone next, and the stats reset, unplug it and play with it for half an hour or so without turning the screen. Your display will show about 95% at the end of it depending on your brightness.
Could be just me but I tried Juice Defender and had the same problem and was eating through the battery. Display was 70-80. Uninstalled JD and it dropped to around 50 and I am getting close to 20 hours on a charge. Maybe it was a fluke but if your on JD try uninstalling it.
I've never seen anything this high on the evo 4g - except when using the tmartin leaked "official" GB that had the kernel bug that caused the brightness to be on 100% brightness all the time.
On CM6, CM7, Synergy, Fresh, Stock, Mik, ... none had this high utilization (or ANYWHERE near it!)
Maybe the higher resolution leads to more interpixel matrix plus the parallax barrier necessitating higher LED power for the same brightness?
This really seems normal to all you people?
Yeah it's ridiculously high on 3vo. I don't think I ever saw my display exceed 10% in my og evo, but on the 3vo it always is over 50%.

I imagine that on the Evo 4g, some of the display usage was actually rendered under "android system" usage which was higher than it is now on the 3D. It all balances out in the end...
why would there be a difference in allocating display vs. system between [email protected] stock vs. [email protected], 2.2, 2.3, 2.3.3, 2.3.4 ... under any of those on the 4vo, I never saw anything above about 10-20% nominal... (again, except for tmartin et al. with brightness bug).
When I had my EVO 4G, the display usage.was always.less than 20%, no matter how much my display was on. As soon as I flashed a 2.3.3 Rom to my evo4g,.the display usage went up to 70% or above, no matter how much I used it. I could have the screen off for 10 hours and it would still be in over 70%. I notice the exact same trend on my 3d. No matter what, the display usage is high. This never happened on froyo with the original EVO. I think its just something to do with how GB calculates the percentages. I don't care what anyone says, display shouldn't be over 70% if I have.the screen off 95% of the day (which has happened).
As someone else noted, I first noticed this on 2.3.3 on the EVO, with tmartins first GB build of the leaked build, and that has continued with every 2.3.3 build I've used. I think its a 2.3.3 issue.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
alot of us may be used to the original evo 4g display percent, which has always been flat wrong until gingerbread.
go look at most any other android phone and you will find the display is almost always the highest percent drain.

[Q] Display literally destroying battery life

So across all roms I have tried the display literally destroys the battery life of my phone. While the screen is off I get fine battery life. But when the screen is on I can watch my percentage decrease about 2-3% every minute so after a half hour of browsing my battery is gone.
I have an extended battery as well but that just prolongs it slightly. The brightness is about half right now. Is this normal?
Does not sound Normal but display is the largest user of battery( unless one can use the phone with display off
I had as video streaming yesterday for 30+ min from 80% it went to 14%
haven't tried keeping just display on should try that ...test for tomorrow

I have my brightness set to 15% and it still sucks about half of my battery use. The display is unfortunately nearly unstoppable when it comes to battery drain. HTC and others are like "BIG PHONE DISPLAY!!!1!111!" we're all like "I can haz batteries?"
That description is the best description of our issue.
But an answer to your question, drop you brightness to as low as you can stand it and if possible try to limit the amount of times you wake the display in a day the juice it requires to turn it on is greater than it needs to sustain the screen on.
I would say yes for the most part. We have a fantastic and power hungry display...the price for greatness?
That being said, its not so bad dropped down to 25% or so, and easily viewable, except if you're outside.

Alright thanks. I just wanted to make sure my phone wasn't experiencing something that is atypical. Other than that I do love this phone and the developers
It's hard to say. With screen on I loose about 1% a minute even with auto-brightness turned off and the screen at around 25%.
There are others on the forum that have made rather amazing battery life claims so it may come down the the individual device.
I have debated about returning mine for a different one to see if I get any better performance.

I'm not sure I would bother chasing longer battery life with new devices. A lot of those are very optimized use cases -- either all on wifi, all in areas with great signal, or lots of screen on time but they don't mention what brightness. The fact of the matter is the phone has a tiny battery and uses up a lot of power for the display and radios. I get somewhere between 12-16 hours on a stock battery, depending on where I am and how much I use the phone (generally I'm a pretty light user, but I do leave 4G and Bluetooth on all day).

[Q] What is the best brightness setting?

Seems a shame to keep this beautiful screen below 70% brightness. What is the best setting for brightness that won't kill my battery? Thanks.
Leave mine at 80 and make it a full day
30% and auto brightness. Greenify with firewall blocking most connections. CF lumen changes tones in the pm. Think im just lucky my eyes are more light sensitive so I can keep brightness settings low.

Screen is great in full sunlight. You get max brightness if you turn off auto brightness and push the slider all the way to 100%. Guarantee you won't have an issue with that.
I stay at 40% no auto brightness. Usually not out in the sun often but when I'm I switch to 100%

I do sometimes miss the AMOLED screen from the S4 only for the Blacks though.
The bottom line though is this QHD screen is amazing. Even though it's the first of its kind for a phone, I think they did a great job. The detail you can see on photos and watching videos is just insane.

I'm coming from an HTC One M8 and idk, I'm just not sold on the display yet. Maybe just my eyes. I do find that auto brightness is always too dark for me inside.
+1 for LUX app, I have it in every phone and tablet in my stable, but...
I find the LUX auto setting to be much too aggressive in dimming the screen under most conditions. I often have to force it to add 30% or more to the auto.
Agree with post above about missing the inky blacks of an AMOLED screen. The blacks are the only complaint I would make about this beautiful display.
I like it @ 70 no Auto, with color correction on and the circle covering just a smidge south of center on the camera icon on the screen that you use to calibrate the color correction.
50% and auto.
For me, anything less that 80% looks awful. Yes, downright awful! At 80%, it looks great. On my G2 it was 70%, but the G3 needs more to look clean and bright. I'd rather have to charge the phone 20 times a day than suffer with dimly lit screens. Sometimes people spend more time trying to figure out how to save battery life than they do using their phones. Enjoy your phones people, and stop suffering over battery life!
That said, I do get a tiny blip of dimming when switching apps or screens. At a solid 80% it seems to auto dim a tiny bit during normal use. I think this is some sort of throttling function that is normal with the G3, but it is minor annoying. Some people had done some overrides to this but I can live with it.
