This is how I got add free working. I'm rooted and over clocked. And with this method I stayed rooted and overclocked but was add free.
Download add free from market.
Download fast reboot from market.
Move add free to the sd card via manage applications.
Let fast reboot stay were it is.
Now run add free it and when it first runs it will give you a dialogue box. Press skip. Then exit out of add free.
Reopen add free and and it will say new host has been found. Download/update the host files. It wil then say you may need to reboot to flush dns. Back out of the app.
Then open fast reboot. Let it run. And you should be add free. To test open up an app you have that has adds and they should be no longer there.
This method allowed me to keep root and my overclock therefore not needing to reboot to flush dns.
I'm rooted via temp perma root and overclocked via over clock evo 1.8 .
Feedback is welcome.
Hope this helps members who were trying to get the stock rom add free.

freakin fantastic!
edit: i still have ads in my games and such but browser seems to be ad free. fast reboot doesnt actually soft/hot reboot, just kills and reloads everything.

@fpinda101 are your games add free?? That's if you have any installed.

This doesn't work for me either. AdFree works by loading the hosts file with local resolutions to all the known ad domains. This file is stored in ROM, and cannot be anywhere else. And ROM is write-protected, so I just don't see how AdFree can work. :/
Also if anyone has had this work for them feedback would be welcome. Aslo if you had to skip a step or add something to get it working.

I don't think it has anything to do with losing temp root. The hosts file is probably in one of the protected areas of the ROM and will get restored in the same manner that you would lose root before the perma-temp root solutions. My ads come back after some time and I still have root according to adfree.

Thanks for this. It seem to block most of the ADs which is great since we only have temp root.

Thanks, I've been trying to get adfree working for a while, this worked.
Edit: Works for a while and then just randomly stops working, when that happens you have to got through the whole process again. It's a bit annoying but it will have to do until we get full root.

I compiled this for someone at DroidForums and I figured I would post it here.
In order to complete all of these steps, you will need:
ROM Manager
Titanium Backup Pro
Root Explorer
SetCPU
Odin v1.3
A file manager like Astro to install the APKs.
SetCPU can be downloaded here for free: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505419
It can also be bought from the Market. The others also need to be purchased or downloaded.
In order to root, follow the instructions here: http://forum.androidcentral.com/verizon-fascinate-rooting-roms-hacks/33899-how-root.html
Here is a link for Mac users: http://forum.androidcentral.com/ver...s/34188-rooting-using-mac-video-tutorial.html
ClockworkMod Recovery Installation instructions are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=942021 You can also flash the new recovery with Rom Manager, but for now, I recommend the recovery in the link.
At this point, you should be rooted with CWM Recovery. Now, it's time to install Froyo.
Follow the link here, and you will find Odin files for quickly installing EB01: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/sa...roms-w-root-new-clockwork-updated-2-11-a.html
NOTE: You will need to wipe when you go from 2.1 to 2.2. Be sure to back up everything before the upgrade.
Now, you will need a rom. I would recommend SuperClean by Adrynalyne: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=910921 It includes a kernel and there are Voodoo and NonVoodoo versions. This will remove all bloatware, including TouchWiz and Bing. However, the browser will still search with Bing. Then, use the themes sub-forum to find a theme.
You can use ROM Manager-Download-sonofskywalker3 to find all sorts of options. Stock apps, de-Binged browsers, new boot animations, widgets, etc. Anything you didn't want removed can be downloaded there.
If you need to return to stock, you'll need to use Odin. Ask any questions in this thread and I will do my best to answer them. You can also post a thread on XDA(make sure it's in the right section!), or visit the IRC at: webchat.freenode.net channel: #samsung-fascinate
I take no credit for anything here.

I'm not sure. I'll edit my OP and say it's very risky, since you are the only person I have heard of that it doesn't cause issues.
uh oh
I just deleted all these apps. Am i in trouble when froyo comes out?
It looks like wireless tether doesn't work for me, and I did delete 3G Mobile Hotspot, so maybe it makes sense to go slow at this before jumping in. I'm not having any problem connecting to wi-fi, though, so if that's all you want then maybe you'll be fine. I use backup assistant so I can't comment on what could happen if that's deleted.
Freezing/hiding apps seems to be the best way to make sure you aren't looking for backup apps somewhere...

Yes it is. That's why I recommend it. I also find it easier than moving them to the SD card with root explorer like a lot of people are doing, but to each his own.
EDIT: I tried Wireless Tether, and it started just fine. I didn't try connecting anything to it, but I know it at least starts. I can't tell if they blocked tethering or if deleting Mobile Hotspot affects it.

Here's the system dump: http://forum.androidcentral.com/fascinate-roms-hacks/32839-fascinate-system-dump.html
I have removed [moved] both Backup Assistant and Mobile 3G Hotspot and I have no issues with Wireless Tether. Before assuming Mobile 3G Hotspot is the cause of your issues, try verifying Wireless Tether works for you beforehand. There was a thread dedicated to Wireless Tether not working by a senior member only to find out it was user error.
There's more than one way to move/remove apps and I'm sure we all can confirm deleting .apk files is NOT the best option. I've used Titanium Backup to freeze apps which I could not locate the .apk for, but I prefer moving the .apk files. This is because I've been in a force-close loop after moving a file and the only solution would be to move the file back and reboot the phone. This can be done via ADB. If you freeze an app and you get in a force-close loop you may not be able to use Titanium Backup's GUI to un-freeze an app.
I move to the SD card to free up space on the phone, which comes in handy if you're replacing stock apps from other places. Plus, it gives me an easy view of what to move to/from the /system/app folder if I need to put apps back when there is an OTA (or if someone asks me "what apps did you remove?")
Move/rename/freeze... pick your poison, but please don't delete.

Yup. If you delete, you have to handle the process of moving apps from the system dump. I don't think a factory reset would work, since the apps aren't there and it has nowhere to restore them from.
Just installed CMW and removed bloatware from these instructions, everything went great. Appreciate your time to do the write up.
I'm still interested in doing the lag fix, I did notice a difference with my phone. I ran it one week with it, and one week without and I've noticed a difference. Anyone else running it with all this setup?

The lag fix seems to have very mixed results. Some people say it has caused lag, some have trouble un-doing it, some notice no difference. So I haven't taken the risk. I also need the internal memory it takes away. I would consider it if it would fix those occasional stutters and freezes, and actually make a difference.

I had adfree working on my Galaxy I7500 ( GAOSP ) in it worked just fine with my Weathereye app. Now that I have the Atrix with the Weathereye app, Adfree just don't remove the ads from it. Anyone else have an issue ?
Working fine for me. Connect your Atrix to the computer, run adb and try "su" (or do this in Terminal on your phone). Maybe you don't really have root access.
Don't have Terminal showing in the apps list. I rooted via aRoot if it matters. Titanium Backup works fine. To be perfectly honest, I have very little experience with adb. Refresh my memory to try su via adb. I feel like a noob ...
EDIT: Found ADB for Dummies. I do, in fact, have su access. Any chance you can download Weathereye and see if you get ads at the bottom ?? I wonder if its a difference in phones that's causing this ...
Just installed it. No ads here, brotha. I know what you're talking about though - I've seen them before.
Try running Cache Cleaner and/or restarting your phone. There could be DNS info still lurking in the background pulling the ads.
Put a check by Symlink and also you could try doing Revert and then Download and install Hosts again if that doesn't work. Just keep buggering with it and it should work. I have an AT&T Atrix but my buddy has a Bell one and we got his rooted and ran Adfree last night with success. Sometimes it just takes some tinkering.
P.S. Maybe uninstall it and reinstall it after doing the Adfree stuff too. Trying to throw all the tips I can think of. I know that ads freakin' SUCK!!
Thanks for the tips, I'll play some more and see what I get. I'll let you know !
I have AdFree and it works on all apps so far. Only have about 20 apps downloaded, though.

Well, I am at a loss. I uninstalled weathereye. Downloaded cachecleaner and android assistant. Reverted, then rebooted. Ran cachecleaner, re-downloaded hosts. Checked Symlink. Rebooted phone and re-installed Weathereye. Damned ads still appear. Grrrr !! I know this app will run without ads, I have done it before. I am convinced myself I am not insane, but that could change soon.
Well I have tried just about everything. No ads in Angry Birds, but they do persist in Weathereye. Oh well, guess I'll have to live with it. Maybe it'll sort itself out someday.
You could always replace the hosts file, its a bit more complex but it stops every ad, in the browser or anywhere else.

this is likely due to AdFree not having the updates to the ad sites. AdFree works by replacing your hosts file with a list of known ad sites that loop back to itself, so that you are never presented the ad. if one app is still showing ads, then AdFree needs to update their master list to add in that site

The thing is, is that I had no ads in this app when I was using AdFree with my Galaxy. That's partly I am a little frustrated and confused why its not working. Its not the end of the world if I can't get it removed, but it is annoying that these ads are links that sometimes I accidently hit.
i'm having the same exact problem, except my adfree doesn't block anything.
I found this thread: Block ads on your android phone. Haven't tried it yet, but I see no reason why it won't work.
No luck. I replaced the hosts file in /system/etc and no dice. I saw a hosts file in /etc/, should I be replacing that too ??
Anyone have any updated info on getting AdFree to work on the Atrix?
I rooted with Gladroot, rebooted the phone, cleared the cache yet in every app I'm seeing ads.
This is driving me nuts because I had no problems with this on my Milestone or Galaxy S. *sigh* Help!...
Really? I just got a Bell Atrix and put Adfree. Superuser requested access, I granted it, updated the .hosts and boom - no ads. Did this to a friend's Bell Atrix and another friend's AT&T Atrix and boom - no ads.
Just did it to my wife's Desire Z last night too because I put a new ROM on there... and no ads. Are you sure you guys are allowing Superuser? I don't know why the heck it works on every phone I do it to but not on phones for people here? Have you explored all the options in Adfree or used it on a wireless network?

It started with no ads (like for 15min), but now it's not working at all. I did the reboot, cleared the cache, and even installed Busybox and ads are everywhere. I tried to redownload, but adfree says I'm up to date.
This is driving me nuts because I never had a problem with this on other phones.
Also I did the opt out of ads in the market as well and that didn't work either:
http://phandroid.com/2011/04/16/google-letting-users-opt-out-of-ad-targeting-via-market/
Looks like a couple of people in the comments section of that page are having the same issue?...
I noticed the other day that in the /etc directory ( not the system/etc/ directory ) that there is a hosts file, a hosts.allow file and a hosts.deny file. I wonder if I copy everything that adfree put in the host file and put it into the host.deny file if that would fix it ...
Hi, I made this account just to post a reply to this thread. I have a GladRooted Bell Atrix and am using Adfree. I noticed it worked before then suddenly stopped...
What I now realized, it works when I am on Wifi!!! but not on the Bell network!! So now how do we get it to work when on the Bell Network???
I am thinking this has to do with the Bell's version of the Atrix software since this is not an issue for AT&T users or for other Bell customers on other phones.

ANNOUNCING PERMA-TEMP ROOT + HULU FIX!!!!
I've taken the excellent existing information from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1159354 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=688054&page=46
See the first link for instructions, etc. Basically just plug your phone into your PC, make sure USB debugging is on, using your phone as charge only, and that HTC Sync isn't running. Then open up the attached zip and run Run_ME_Fr3vo_ROOT + HULU FIX. OH, and I'm not sure if it matters, but have the latest Adobe Flash player installed on your phone before you start (10.3.185.25)
That's it! Your phone should be rooted AND HULU-ready until you reboot.
WHAT I DID: All I did was add a few commands that will delete your lib file from com.adobe.flashplayer, then install a different .lib file with correct permissions. Now, when you go browse Hulu with your stock browser or Dolphin (making sure your settings are set to disable mobile browsing, or set as DESKTOP VIEW, etc), Hulu won't recognize your phone as non-desktop, and you'll be free to watch Hulu all you want!
[Please note: this is my first time doing anything like this, as in first time ever creating a .bat file or doing anything with adb beyond the very basics; please bear that in mind when ripping me apart for being a noob ]
If this was helpful, please let me know with a thanks!
EDIT: Thanks to abe_ahmed09 for reminding me this works with stock browser too!
Unable to test this right now due to no PC access. But dude, no one should rip you apart, you are trying to help the community and I commend you do doing things that a lot of others do not have the ability to do.

very nice work! thanks for this.
SWEET!
Glad it's working! I'll add emphasis to the fact that you need the latest version of flash for it to work.
Here's a question: are there any other programs out there that have to be tweaked AFTER root in order to work? What I mean is, right now I've got 10 or 20 root apps that work flawlessly after I root. But if there are good apps out there that require additional tweaking after root, perhaps we could incorporate that into the .bat as well

Oh hell no! Just use the free Dolphin Browser from the market, then go to settings and choose "Desktop" so that websites think you're browsing from a PC/Mac. When you get to HULU, depending on your settings, you may need to click the green arrow to watch the video.
Works in Full Screen too!!
...of course, if you're talking about Hulu-plus-only videos---then yes, you'd of course need Plus to view those videos just as you would elsewhere.
EDIT: Reading over your comment again I guess I need to clarify further: nothing here is "ad supported" because there are no apps, etc that I've provided. ALL MY HULU FIX DOES IS SWAP OUT A FILE IN YOUR ADOBE APP FOLDER THAT TRICKS HULU INTO THINKING YOU'RE A COMPUTER. But note that you'll still need a BROWSER that enables you to browse like a computer.
Were these points unclear to anyone else?
Works after updating flash to 10.3.

So I didnt have root, i ended up using one of the other .bat script from the forums and running your .bat script after. Everything worked like a charm after that thanks for putting this together. =] Great job

Awesome, Great to hear it! Ya, not sure why the root method in my OP isn't working for you...different people have posted different results with the same root method! Anyway glad it's working, and as you discovered, there should be no problem running this on a rooted phone
Now I've tweaked it further so it'll overclock your phone to 1.8 GHz! I might make a new thread for that...
Root is working but hulu does show up and starts to play then I get a message telling me its not supported on this platform. I updated flash and mobile mode has been disabled.

works great for me and oc sweet. im using skyfire
thanks
hey guys.
i've always been a strong supporter of developers. I buy all the apps that I can and I think are worth it. I even have some that I've paid for that I no longer have installed. but some apps simply don't give you the option of paying for an ad-free version. so i've used adfree for over a year on my OG Evo 4G.
I have adfree now on my Evo 3D and even though it says the host files are up-to-date and the app has root access, i still have ads in almost all my apps!
is there something i'm doing wrong? or is adfree simply not working with GB? is there an alternative?
thanks.
I've never had luck with Adfree. It worked with admob ads but never in-game ads, even with an updated host file. I think you need to find out what host your app uses and manually add it in.

have you tried rebooting after installing the hosts? like a regular reboot. then check again.
i've never rebooted immediately after updating the hosts file...but eventually I end up rebooting and there is no difference. unless you're saying I need to reboot immediately or the file gets overwritten by android somehow.

two ideas come to mind on ways to determine the exact server the ad program is pulling the ad data from
1) i was watching logcat the other day while using rom manager. side note: i wasn't bored i was double checking my rom was showing up there and it does! i noticed in logcat some of the ad programs, like the one used by rom manager, output a lot of detail about their actions. you might be able to see which hosts the in application ad program is using to pull down the ads by watching logcat.
2) a little more technical of a method would be to run netstat on the phone. of course, i would do a fresh reboot and wait until everything updates and turn off a lot of the syncing to eliminate noise in netstat but it should show the ip address of the ad server connection!
you probably already know this but just to state it for anybody reading this now or later, once you have the ip address (hostname) of the ad server, you can add to the /etc/hosts file and point it to 127.0.0.1.
although, after typing that up, now i'm thinking if they hard code the ip address to the ad server in the application, the /etc/hosts file might not help ... then you might have to add a route to ifconfig and point that ip at the localhost ... but i might be getting off topic as i'm speculating at this point!
hope those two suggestions help. if you have a chance to research or implement, let us know!
****All credit goes to user yareally. This is his host file he posted in a different section I just reposted the link.***
Here is a great host file you can place manually.
Go to this link and at the top there is a d/l button. The file will be named hosts.
https://gist.github.com/543651c8d3bb7992f2be
Then using root explorer or a similar app mount system as r/w, and move the file to /system/etc/
Set the permissions as such:
Owner: read, write
Group:read
Other:read
Or just use terminal emulator and type:
su
chmod 644 /system/etc/hosts
Now reboot and your done!

Thanks going to try that now. What do I have to lose? I checked my hosts file and it's 700Kb big with endless entries...yet I still get ads.

Maybe Adfree doesn't work on the Evo 3D?
Most ROMs on the Evo 4G had adblocking in them. I'm sure they also have that in the Evo 3D. Try flashing Synergy, I think that has ad blocking in it.

no... adfree is definitely working for me on Virtuous..
are you doing anything beyond downloading from market and updating hosts files?
im a long time user on my Evo 4G and it worked wonders. now on my Evo 3D the ads dont stop :-(
That is really really strange. Are you getting adds in ALL apps or is it just a couple. It's possible they are using some newer ad hosts that haven't been added to the common host files that can be found around. With that host file I linked to I never get any adds in apps and barley a one in the browser. I actually switched to it for the specific reason of adfree not working for me anymore.
Sorry I forgot to say if you have that file in the right place permissions set and you rebooted and still no luck I don't know what to tell ya sorry.

this is really frustrating. i'm getting ads in every app or game that has them in. adfree reports being updated. i've tried downloading custom files. my hosts file is there and full of ip addresses. yet ads are everywhere :-(
anyone else?

For me its quite an improvement because the browser doesnt load all the crap that is embedded on many websites!
I've personally used Adblock for a long time, but yeah, same idea. I plan on rooting my TP tonight, almost solely for ad blocking.
EDIT: Whoops. I use AdFree, not AdBlock.

i also used adblock, but adaway seems really nice and has more options. you should try it!
+1 to this or any other ad removing software.
When I rooted under HC, it was the first thing I installed after superuser.
I'm agree that ads can be a pain.. but please think that those are part of how android developers who offers free apps in the market get some money for their work. I'm not saying no to do it, just Think about it.

Honestly, the ads are more of an issue in the browser for me, but I get your point. Personally, I regularly purchase the paid ad-free version of apps that I love rather than using the free version and removing the ads.

ads in most android apps are ok i think, the ads on many websites are just ridiculous! i'm always shocked when looking at websites on a computer that doesnt have adblock installed, on some sites this great plugin makes the site at least readable!
i agree that app devs are suffering from those methods and i wish there was an app like adaway that blocked only browser ads, but there isnt (at least to my knowledge)....
Hey folks, I'm rooted, have busybox, but am having trouble getting AdAway to work properly on my TFP. It ends up telling me that the Applying failed -- "Applying the hosts file to your system failed"
It tells me that I should try changing the target location of the hosts file, but I've tried both and nothing works. Is there a special/custom location to the target file?

I have seen this error several times, then it fixes hours later. I often think the server(s) that AdAway is pinging to get the host files are down or busy or overloaded or just not stout enough for the traffic so we get these errors. Try again later. I do, and it always works out.

Some of the logic in here is funny... It is okay to block ads on the web - still taking money out of someone's pocket - but not as "cool" to block them on your phone because then a "dev" loses out. Please. Hypocrisy at it's finest. Someone on the web or a dev on a mobile device putting ads in the GUI are all open season and no one gets a pass any more than the other.

2 questions:
- do you have superuser installed?
- do other root apps work? (you can test root access with "ota root keeper")
If he is getting that error, he is properly rooted. He could not get that error without the app running and for the app to run, you need root.
It is not a root issue as I pointed out in the last page, I have seen this before numerous times, it is very much likely an error with the app getting access to the servers with the host files to download. Time has always fixed it for me. Saw it last night, today all worked fine.
Trying this now. So with this it isnt necessary to do the about:debug option with the browser setting thats posted below?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1411438&highlight=browser
Just installed, applied it and rebooted. Seems to be working good so far. Will out iit throught the paces to see.
Is this a set n leave alone app or do you constantly need to go in and update the host files or sources or whatever?
Browser does seem faster though...
