Ginger Stuffs.... - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone ever had a fix for the Voicemail not notifying in gingerbread?
Also, besides the "usb internet pass through" jazz, is there any new way to get usb to work more reliably?
I had some pretty major voicemails I missed this week, so I'm back to good ol Froyo til someone saves me here.....

Download the usb_fix in imoseyon's thread, flash it, no more switching just to get disk drive to work correctly.

Thats a problem with the GB leak all the roms are based on. No fix. I just make sure to check voice mail if I miss a call. A lot of people are using Google Voice - solves the problem.
The USB issue is kernel related and has been fixed in almost all of the newer kernels.

Thanks guys! Helps alot!
Lame about voice mail, but oh well, atleast I will soon have a "normal" usb mode
So, new question:
-I read its possible to change the froyo power bar icons to do different things. I was wondering, is there a way to do some hacking to get custom settings like these in the gingerbread quick settings pull down? I dont use half the stuff in there, and would LOVE to add back my flashlight toggle....
The article I read was here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1062036&highlight=notification

[Q] Anyone have issues with their Visual Voice Mail?

I got this text message upon someone leaving a voice message earlier today.
//ANDROID:xxxxxxxxxx has sent you a Sprint Voice Message. Call 408-970-0000 to listen. MMSN,15f50fe30,2986,V69EhxxlPpO//CM
Anyone else having this issue, and if so, what resolved it, if anything?
I also can't seem to get into my notification options when I call into my voice mail either. Not sure if that's common or not though.
Sent from my HTC 3VO using XDA App
Someone left me a message this morning, it worked perfect. I would force stop it, clear data from the app, update your data profile then reboot and see if it works.
I gave it a shot, but it didn't seem to work. When I call the number texted to me, it just asks if I'm on a voice SMS enabled phone, but doesn't give me any messages.
I tried the suggestion on the help page through the VVM app, to compose a message longer than 15 sec and send it to [email protected]. Haven't had an occasion yet to test it again, but once I do, I'll update this with another reply.
Strange though. Through many different phone activations over the years, this is the only time this happened. Really hope I don't need to do a hard reset. If I do, I hope it works. Not like I can nandroid or anything. lol

Still a no go... Can't figure it out. ; ;
Gonna call Sprint and see what their take is on it. Will report back.
i am actually having the same EXACT problem!! i have tried for force stop and clearing everything... still getting the same message!! and the VM never shows up in the VVM app!! Thanks for any help!!
I guess that's the only other thing I can think of is a hard reset. If that doesn't work I'm guessing it's something on Sprint's side would have to call in for tech support. I know when you boot up for the first time VM tries to provision itself and will say Voicemail provisioned successfully once data services are active.
Well... Just got off the phone with support. I had a very determined girl trying to help me out. Went through a whole bunch of stuff, but nothing helped so far.
Her and I both googled it, and found 2 things:
1. People switching to a phone that doesn't have VVM capability receive these messages.
2. They are command messages to tell VVM to download each new message when they come in.
Can't figure out why the messages are skipping the VVM app and going straight to SMS though.
I think I'm gonna try a hard reset later and see if that does it. Hope it does, because I spent some time getting everything the way I wanted it. lol
Anyone think of a good backup app that'll help cut down on the restoring my stuff time? ^^;
ADDITION: The version of my VVM is T.5.1.0.62 Is this the one everyone else has also? Asking just to cover as many bases as possible.
Had the the same problem called sprint after about 45 min of trying different things i had to hard reset and they reprovisioned and now it works perfect.

Hard Reset did it. It was A LOT more painless than I thought it'd be though. That backup and restore thing from google really helped out a lot in getting all my apps back. ^^
Also make sure you do not have Handcent's "disable stock messaging app" setting on. When it disables the stock app, the stock app can't get the 9016 incoming VVM messages before Handcent does and will cause this.

You're welcome. I doubt it but maybe the Hancent team can find a work around for this. It seems to me that if you disable it it's disabled but maybe they can block all incoming from the stock app except 9016, kind of like a reverse black list (actually they call those white lists don't they?, lol). I'd like to see that happen, but we'll see what the Hancent crew comes up with. I know others have said that other sms apps can do this or something like that, but I like Hancent better than all the others.
Anyways, glad I could help.
My issue's back again. Did have that setting on though, so I'll restart and see if that does the trick. ^^;

I've been trying to tell my wife that for a long time, maybe I can use this as proof, she keeps saying I'm not that smart.
But glad I could help, if I hadn't done it myself I wouldn't have known how to fix it, lol.
Use spc app to "block" the text messages but still get voicemails if using Handcent.
Just wanted to pass this on to you guys, as it has always worked for me. I had the Evo rooted with a custom AOSP rom and had used GV as voicemail then decided I wanted Sprint VVM back. When I made the switch everything seemed okay, but when someone called my phone and it went to voicemail it wouldn't let them leave one. Did some reading and finally figured out something that worked.
1. Stop the VVM process in running apps.
2. Clear the data for Voicmail under applications.
3. Dial *38 and call it as you would any other number( You should hear a few beeps and then it should automatically hangup) This has something to do with disabling call forwarding but will allow your voicemail to properly provision itself.
4. Open VVM and it should tell you that it has been provisioned successfully.
You should be good to go after this point, but if it does not tell you along the bottom of phone that it provisioned try this again but reboot before step 4. Some have also said that updating your profile and prl after doing the *38 helps.
Just thought I would share this as I read the comments about a hard reset when they aren't needed. I'm not to sure this would help with the issue described by the OP but hey its worth a shot instead of losing everything.
Confirmed: Fix Works for Epic 4G
Yep, I had Handcent Default Application enabled...clearing this resulted in Visual Voicemail back to normal.

MMS on ICS issues

Can someone please teach me the proper way to get my mms working on ics (Jt)? I know I need to edit the build.prop, but I am not exactly sure what numbers I need to change. Thanks in advance

You can't on the fascinate...the mezmerize folks can get it working by editing the build prob, but not us fascinate users from my understanding.
After running gummy for fassy, and aokp, I can't get mms/or SMS to work properly on aokp. On aokp, mms won't work at all, SMS works unless u add a ♪ or ♥, then it force closes. On gummy SMS is perfect , mms works receiving. Question is, I can send mms messages longer than 160 characters, but it refuses to send a picture. Anyone have a similar problem? Or know what options I have?

Unfortunately I was never able to get MMS to work on any of the ICS ROMS, even after starting from scratch several times, and trying the setDNS fix, etc. Not sure why, but my phone just doesn't like ICS yet...this makes me sad. I did try the set dns fix, with no luck. I can't claim I did everything 100% correct, I was rushing because my better half was frustrated with me as I was spending way too much time working on fixing my phone. She was right, of course!
I may give AOKP another run sometime soon, I really really like that ROM.

I've been battling this issue for a while. What works for me is ....start mms...then choose FILE/PICS.....choose your pic from gallery..... if it doesn't send right away, I close mms, toggle AIRPLANE MODE , then reopen mms....seams to work for me. I also switched to CHOMP APP.

It's funny you mention that...I will be eligible for a new device in the fall, just around the time the new iPhone and maybe the new SGSIII, and possibly another Nexus device are available as well. I've been an iPod user since the original, and have no issues with Apple or iTunes. But I still can't see myself getting an iPhone, regardless of how nice it is with the next version. I can't imagine not being able to change my stuff the way I want to. With an iPod, I don't care, I want it to just play music and manage my playlists, which they do very well.
Hi everyone, I'm lpt2569...and I'm a Flashing/Android addict.
Yes lol I also use an iPod for music. This was before I got my fascinate. I used iPod a lot for music. However now that I am figuring more and more how to do things with my phone ( music , radio and podcasts ) I use the iPod less and less. Thanx everyone for some helpful ideas. I'm goin crazy over here trying to get my mms to work. I've flashed soo many ROMs lately, I'm getting cross-eyed. The only way that my mms works is using THS 6.1, works flawlessly. If I flash gummy or build 22 I have no luck. I even copied the mms.apk from 6.1 and i still have no luck. Is it that the ICS builds just work different on different fascinates?
update: running build 22, and coping 6.1 mms.apk to /system/app folder, and setdns.....its now working
I flashed AOKP Build 25, and still can't get MMS to work. There must be something funky with my Fascinate, or I've done something funky in my flashes (most likely scenario). I've tried every workaround, and every way of flashing, and MMS never works. Oh well. ICS is really nice on this phone. Just wish I could get f&$!ing MMS to work! I'm going to try build 26, released today, and see how it goes.

mms didnt work... used this setdns trick... mms works perfect

SpeedROM wifi mms problems

I know that you guys are going to tell me to search through the thread. I'm actually not a noob I just lurk a lot.
I flashed SpeedROM 4.0 and now I am unable to send mms messages (redundant) while I'm connected to my WiFi. I searched all over that thread to find a fix and all I came up with was to install Android 4 ICS Messaging SMS over the Play Store. tried it. it came up with an error "Duplicate Provider Authority" Any help?
I also found out that there's no notification of messages on the lock screen nor does it chime/vibrate/notify when you receive a message from an unknown number

It's a general problem with the amaze on ICS, it's widespread, so don't expect a fix anytime soon.
It never happened on the stock ics with sense 3.6. If I knew how to do all of this stuff I would help. My best guess is that the answer is in the stock ics ROM. I have my stock backup if anyone needs it for study

"Duplicate Provider Authority" means that you are trying to install something that the phone already has system flags dedicated for(this explanation could be a little better).. Speedrom already has the MMS app, use a root tool, titanium backup - something to remove mms.apk from the system/app folder, then you will be able to install the one in the market -- not that that is a sure fire fix.. but one thing at a time. Try that, that is the only reason you couldn't install.

[Q] Just rooted! Woohoo! A few questions...

Just rooted my phone...and I love being able to use the WiFi tether! A few questions:
1) Which of the bloatware should I remove and will it noticeably improve the performance of my phone?
2) How do I get rid of the WiFi notifications that always pop up and tell me there's WiFi nearby?
3) How do I get Sense 4.0 on this phone and what are the advantages/disadvantages of it?
Please keep in mind that I am an extreme noob and it was pretty incredible that I was actually able to root. In fact, I had to get help from a friend on it!
1) It will remove any background apps you don't need. Read up on which ones can be safe to remove.
2) While in Wi-Fi settings press menu then choose Advancedyou will see the option "Notify Me", deselect/uncheck it.
3) By flashing a Sense 4.0 rom and matching boot.img. There are a few good ones and really just as many bugs as any Sense 3.6 rom nowadays, so no need to worry on that.
If you need help, I'm only a quick PM away. I might not reply right away but I will gladly be of help.
EDIT:
Regarding your first question; flash a custom rom and not worry about bloatware.
Thanks, Snuzzo...much appreciated. Regarding #2, it was indeed unchecked. It says "Notify me, When launching apps, notify me when Wi-Fi is available"...not sure that's what I'm going for. Per your other recommendation, I'd assume flashing a custom ROM would help that.
Is there a good Sense 4.0 rom you'd recommend? Seems like I've seen that some don't jive with bluetooth...I use bluetooth a lot in my car. Also, what would you say are the benefits of 4.0 over 3.6?

Not being a real hardcore end user, I can't tell the difference. Worst one to ask in that respect. Checkout Hawknest's. Him and myself have been working on Eclipticrez for months now.
Quick clarification...the WiFi notification I'm getting is the one that shows up in the notifications bar at the top of the screen. Unchecking "Notify me" only keeps it from taking over my whole screen. I have unlimited data, so I'm uninterested in WiFi.

Also, if you choose to try a ROM that doesn't remove it, sometimes someone has a file you can flash that will remove it, such as for the ViperRez ROM. You might even ask if that file works on stock rooted if you're not ready to flash a ROM yet. Here's a link to the one made for ViperRez, you can ask in/search the thread to see if it would work on another ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1786277&highlight=viperrez
But really, you might as well flash a custom ROM. I'm running ViperRez and I like it a lot but I'm not able to connect my phone as a portable player to my car and I'm not able to get my contacts into my car either. I was able to do both on stock and on a GB ROM I was running. Am going to reflash it and see if it works, or try to get it set up on stock first then reflash. Other than that I really like the ROM.
I was thinking of trying out iRezone, that seems like it might be good too.
If after you flash a custom ROM you still have that wifi icon showing just check the ROM thread and see if someone posted a fix.

Barin Voicemail Question

So I'm running Barin (2.3), which I love. I do have a quick question and I'm not sure if this is normal or not but when someone leaves me a voicemail I get no icon for it. I have to call myself after someone calls to see if they left a message, there's no notification for it. Is this a normal thing with ROMs? Or can I download something to get my voicemail icon back? It's not a big deal if I can't, I would just like to know when someone leaves me a message, I'm a bit new to ROMs, so this may be a normal thing, just wanted to ask.
Thanks for any help on this.

Did it work right before the update?
It's never been the same for me since they added that avatar crap.
I usually have to manually go into the app to get my voicemail. I usually disable most of the stuff in it, maybe that's why?
Maybe adjust your settings and see what happens.
I don't think it's the ROM. I THINK it's the app. $2.99 a month and you can have this free service. Lol
Have yall tried youmail? Works better than stock, can customize greetings per person. Bypasses your carrier voicemail. Notifications work very well.

I'm still on 2.2, but VM notification is working fine for me.
Yea I got it working, for some unknown reason it wasn't set up even through I did it when I first installed Barin, probably just a Sprint voicemail glitch. Oh well, it's working now, that's all that matters.
Thanks for the help.
