hello,
I'm using the official lg rom v2.2.1 that came with the phone. I wanted to update to cm7 but I read about the problem with the BT wich I must have. another thing is that I'm using hebrew and I need it to stay that way.
The thing is that the touch screen is very bad and lags a lot.
If I will upgrade only the kernel what will be the affect on the phone and how do I know what is the best kernel for my version ?
In general I want to fix the touchscreen bug and to OC the phone.
thanks for the help.
If you just want to overcome the touch screen bug then I would suggest using Der_Caveman's Kernel, it is quite old but is usable and removes the touch bug and enables OC.
The kernel wouldn't change any outward appearance of the phone, except maybe increase the quadrant score a bit. If you really want a good performance boost as well then try franco's kernel. Since you are using the stock rom it is recommended to take a nand backup before flashing these kernels. And a kernel doesn't change the system language AFAIK.
Thanks for quick reply. will these two kernels good for froyo 2.2.1 and are there known bugs that I should be aware of before updating ?
As far as read the franco's v18.1 is for 2.3.3...
I have never used Der_Caveman's kernel, but it is bug-free AFAICT. And in the link that I have posted above, franco kernel is available for both froyo and GB. Download the version that says "franco.Kernel v8.1 CFS", it is for froyo.
And as I said earlier, since you are on stock rom it is advisable to take a nand before flashing a custom kernel.
i used dookmatt's kernel which was really good for me(flashed it on stock 2.2.2)...i had no touch lag, no bugs. that would be my recomandation
also dont forget nand backup is holy!

Can I OC with this one ?
OK, I flashed Der_Caveman's Kernel and so far it looks good. the touchscreen is better and I OC to to 729 using setcpu though I cant tell the difference in terms of the speed.
how can I tell if its really 729 and not 600 ?
thanks.
yes my O1 ran at 787 mhz and it was darn stable(at 800+ i had frequent freezes and reboots when launching apps). i also had a friend of mine install this kernel and he's happy with the "new" phone i made
quick system info on market...shows cpu speed
You may look at info tab on SetCPU, it says alot about your device, CPU (frequencies and features), battery and so on.
And you can have SetCPU widget on homescreen as well, which shows current freq, min and max frequencies of the governor you're using

Hey guys, new to the forum and the Vibrant, and i first want to say i love the setup and this forum is insanely informative on its own. Im fully rooted/themed/tethering/modded and the only question ive had to post was about icon .png size haha. so thanks for setting up a VERY efficient forum.
now my question: do i have to install a custom kernel in order to overclock/underclock? I installed setCPU and it wont let me scale past 800mhz. Also no presets, its just says to use conservative scaling for GalaxyS phones. No thank you, i wanna push this thing! Running stock kernel and firmware. Thanks ahead!
I believe you will need to flash one of the many kernels that fits what you want it to do, you should be able to under clock android if your phone is rooted but you will need a new kernel to overclock it.
when you install setcpu make sure you do auto-detect. since you already have it installed, hit menu->device selection->autodetect speeds
on a stock kernel you should be able to set max to 1000000mhz. With the Vibrant ALWAYS LEAVE SCALING TO CONSERVATIVE or you will have freezes.
To get past 1000000mhz you will need a custom kernel, I have been happy with both King's and JAC's. Just download one of their kernels, flash it through CWM, reboot, and run setcpu again and make it autodetect your speeds, from there you should be able to clock up to 1200000mhz
Good luck.

I'm not very familiar with kernels, so naturually im a little hesitant. What else will it affect?

It all depends on the kernel you flash. If you flash voodoo it will change the way the phones file system works. However if you just flash JAC's OC/uv kernal it will OverClock up to 1.2 ghz and UnderVolt some of the midrange frequencies to help improve batterylife. I reccomend reading up on his threads before you attempt these flashes. He has made the procedures to flash these kernels very easy to implement. Good luck and happy flashing! (That just sounds wrong!)

Hi,
I realized these 2 leads kernels :
SpeedMod SGS2:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182498
Ninphetamine-2.0.2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179814
Which is the best for your opinion and what do you recommend ?
Neither try them both yourself .

Ninphetamine-2.0.2 is the best and optimized kernel for all custom roms....
am using it now...

PROOF ?????

The best kernel is stock KG3 right now. All those custom kernels are based on outdated KF, since that's the latest released kernel source. None of them solve the Android OS bug either. I tried them all and returned to stock.

Can you post a link for stock KG3 please ?
Can I install it over Cognition 1.31 ?
Right now I like Lulz-Kernel-Build-11-for-I9100-XXKG3 . Before i used Ninphetamine-2.0.2 it was good also.

Me too. I haven't received any proof, that Ninphetamine is better.
Now I'm trying lulz. 24 hours flight is normal. At least it has better CPU power and clock management.
Ninphetamine is VERY fast, i'm trying to find something fast as it is.
Beside I can use setCPU to customize the clockspeed, I don't see any advantage if using customize kernel.

At least SGSII is already as very fast as you can't get it from it on 100% yet.
By default Ninphetamine uses ondemand CPU Profile. So, I hadn't noticed notable changes in speed with equal settings.
Battery life stayed the same, apropos.

setCPU doesn't provide for you any notable improvement in battery life. Undervolting (UV) does. So, setCPU on Ninphetamine provides UV. But the best way IMHO - is Tegrak Overclock Ultimate - it's capable to change voltage of the Core, Bus and GPU. And of course it works better on author's kernel (lulz - it means tegrak kernel).
Unfortunately, setCPU is not fully compatible with all kernels and vice versa - Tegrak is not compatible with all kernels.
If you recommand the stock KG3 kernel, may you post a link please ? (can't find it).
Thanks.

Its in the stock KG3 firmware .
Download Extract Zimage flash via Odin or CWM .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
note many many users confuse kernel with firmware its not the firmware only part of it . the bit that interfaces at the lowest operating level machine code as it where .

Nothing against you or the developer but its 100% placebo effect, The S2 is extremely fast that I doubt even kernel changes would matter or even slightly affect speeds, sure you get over 9000pts in quadrant but no real world increase, w/o the voltage controls you cant tell the custom kernel from the stock kernels apart.. Unlike during the S1 days.

Can you tell me one app or game that runs slow with the stock ROM and kernel? This is a very fast phone anyway. It runs everything very fast right out of the box. No need to go playing with voltages and clock speeds and risking bricking the phone.
These alternative kernels are just for -my quadrant score is bigger than yours- type of users and have no real life improvement over stock.
When I moved from an old stock kernel to Ninphetamine-2.0.2 I saw a big difference with the application invocation speed. Even clicking the keyboard was very smooth and without any delay unlike the old stock one.
Maybe it's because the stock kernel version was older I'm not sure , but this is real.
Try this.

Sorry for the noby question, but the stock KG3 kernel will remove the cwm recovery i got right ? so, if I want it back I will need to flash a custom kernel again ?
Well, just flashed SpeedMod.
Extremely slower than Ninphetamine

Hello, I'm having something quite annoying with my Atrix 4G.
The problem is that sometimes when I'm playing any Tegra powered game, the phone restarts all alone, it's totally random, it can happen loading a game, sometimes while I'm playing, and sometimes it just don't happen.
I'm worried about this. This mean my Nvidia chipset is broken or it's just something driver/soft related?
How can I fix this?
Regards.
PS: It happened with my official firmware and now with CM7 too.
Quick question---what kernel are you using? Are you using Faux's kernels with both ROMS, and undervolting either? Have you used the v6 supercharger / converted any partitions to ext4?

I have no idea what I'm using, I just see that crash and erase my official firmware and install CM7. I have some android basic knowledge, which no include any kernel subjetcs, I just know how to install ROMs and stuff, but I'm a quick learner.
If you guide me about some possible error it may have I could fix it.
Thanks for your quick response.
I would suggest re-flashing your ROM maybe it's just a bad flash. On the other hand you can just go ahead and flash one of faux123 cm7 kernels and see which one works best for you even the O.C ones you can downclock i notice that issue with kernels mostly.
I recently installed the endv2.5 rom and it was oc so was a bit nervous about it as i know it can damage the phone. I have a wuestion and a request.
First, What are the dangers of oc your phone and has any of them happened to you (are they common)?
Last, can anybody post a link to where i can find a non oc kernel for the endv2.5 rom?
Thanks
as far as I know only CM7 Kang by vo-1 is the only one that has a non-oc kernel.(if i remember right)
aaand ATM there is NO STABLE OC KERNEL so it can fry your motherboard, brick it beyond repair, and with taking the risk of OC-ing u changed to custom and custom rom pones are warranty voided so pretty much your ace will be killed at high frequencies. (stupid samsung OC'ed ace's processor but wont let us OC it >.<)
ok so dont oc the phone lol i dont see why dev's oc them if its do dangerous.
Where can i get a Kerenl to flash that is not oc'ed.
There are a list of kernel's here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439516) but not sure which one to use?
Flash the zImage-Mod v1.0 (1.0 is better then 1.1).
where is the zimage and what does it consist of
just had a read of it and seems good.
It is non oc ye?
and are there any bugs or problems with the v1.0 kernel?
No bugs, works perfectly, should work on all CM based rom's, and it doesn't have OC.
im kinda nervous to do this lol
if it doesn't work can i just simply reflash the rom am i using and the kernel will be restored?
and how do i open govenors?

Hi, sorry if this is in the wrong section, I just posted here because it happens to be on my SGS2.
Im trying to overclock my phone but i've run into a problem.
I'm currently running JellyBam 3.0 on my SGS2 (rooted ofc) and SetCPU says my kernel is Linux version 3.0.15-CM-gf76e4eb
I've downloaded Tegrak Overclock for my phone and tried to overclock it and I first tried to "Load overclock module", where it came up with an error Failed to run insmod! <0x7f050008> err1 code=2
After researching it appears that my kernel is not compatable with overclocking or some sort of thing. Can I just flash any kernel onto my phone? Without affecting my JellyBam Rom. If so could you please suggest a kernel or how to go about finding a suitable one.
Thanks for taking the time to read my post,
hoping for help.
I don't think Overclocking is reccomended for our S2. It won't make the perofromance of the phone any better since the S2 is very solid and with dual core chip it cannot be better than it is, but however if for some reason you need that you might do it, I don't know which kernel allows you to do that though. Sorry.
Why don't you ask in the Jellybam-thread? I thought there where several kernels that work with Jellybam, but I haven't used the rom for a while.

use siyah kernel with ex-tweaks app. But its not recommended to OC. It will only drain your battery
overclocking will kill your phone. dont do it. Its not like a computer you can not give it extra cooling.. It will damage the phone and damage the battery with the extra heat. What a faster phone try a custom rom. Remove apps you dont use and removed auto task killers they slow your phone down.
Thanks for all your replies. I realize my phone is already very powerful but i didn't want to overclock it for desktop use or normal usage but rather because i read everywhere that my phone lags on the games i was downloading such as bat man and modern combat4. Thought i could improve the performance during that.
But i thinki will just rather not and deal witha little lag. I don't exactly have money to spend ona new phone.
Again thanks for all your replies.
I prefer flash one good kernel: siyah, dorimanx, because OC drain too much battery. And u can try OC because those kernels have OC options
