I'm new to Sprint; went from the new 4G to new 3D when it was released. 3D is awesome!!! 4G is one of the main features that attracted me to this device. I find myself only using 3G mostly. So my questions is...do you keep your 4G on or just turn it on when u need it. I live in Atlanta and have pretty good 4G coverage but my device will go on/off 4G
4g drains the battery very quickly so id turn it on only when you need it unless you have it plugged into a charger
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
I leave my 4g off unless I want/need it.
It's a huge battery drain for speeds that are not needed for 95% of the phones regular operations (email, browsing, etc.).
i leave it off unless im watching netflix.
I only use 4G for netflix, other intensive apps, and tether

I keep it plugged in at my desk and use the 4G combined with the hotspot to surf the web daily. Everyone is correct when saying that leaving 4G on unplugged equals 2 hours of battery life if you're lucky. But I must say, the hotspot on the 3D is flawless and works 100% of the time (when Sprint isn't dry humping their towers) compared to the EVO 4G where it would get flaky often and need to be reset all the time.

For those who have the 3vo, do u notice an improvement in the wimax radio vs the OG evo?
NONE!!! Actually I am seeing a minor performance drop, cant top over 4MBS vs the EVO 4G at 5MBS.. whats even more weird is that when I test a Clear 4G Modem (same Service as sprint) next to the phone I get 6-7MBS so I am wondering if there might be some WIMAX limitaions placed on the EVOs...
CINR/RSSI is the same for all 3 units.
My 3vo (I still have hesitations in calling it that, but I digress.) can get 4G about 2 inches farther away from my office window (I mean literally 2 inches). I've tested 4G in my office many times and have marked the exact spot that 4G kicks in, so I know. Yes, I am a geek...
Yeah I've noticed a slight drop also.

My 4G doubled from the Evo to the 3D. May have been a coincidence with a upgrade in equipment but it it much better now.
There is definitely a drop in performance comparing to the og evo. I was with a friend outside and her og evo was at full strength and my 3d evo was at one bar. When we tried pulling up the same websites, hers was noticeably faster loading.
A little bit.
This thing will be smoking fast as soon as i get cyanogen on it.

Hi, I founfd this on the Dev Forum. Read post 1 and 2 it really works... I did it and now in my room I have great signal.

I have been noticing that the WiFi Reception is wayy better than any other phone.
I'm getting strong signals in places were the signal went away in my home using the OG EVO, Epic 4g or the Hero.

Same. Was going to post this as well.
I'm coming from the moment, but yesterday I Picked up Wifi in a spot I knew it existed, but never could get my phone find it. I just thought it was HTC standard. VERY impressed. Gotta love when speed test gets your phone up to 27MB/s via wifi.
Very true
Bussin Caps from my 3D shooter
Just did speedtest on old and new Evo.
4g ping in 91 ms, download .5 mbps, upload .99 mbps.
3d ping 18 ms, dl 18.14 mbps, ul 3.27.
That is amazing.
Same here. I am getting avg. of 1mb faster on 3g and 3-4mbs FASTER on WiFi in my room
4g seems the same

Way better then the wifi on the Palm Pre (v1). I'm able to walk about 15 foot or so farther and remain connected to the home WLAN.
I'm having all sorts of issues with WiFi. it seems to be broadcast storming my network when requesting a DHCP address. The sprint store told me the only way to connect it to wifi was to put it airplane mode, then enable wifi. Well that didn't work for me.
Any suggestions would help.

"Best wi-fi performance"
I was getting terrible wi-fi reception at home and at work (very short range, dropped connections), then I found an option buried in the wi-fi "advanced" settings called "best wi-fi performance" which warns that it "may consume more power." Turned it on and immediately got a full-strength signal. First speed test from my office, where I had previously been unable to connect at all, got 16278kbps down and 4110kbps up. Guess I'll keep that option checked.
16129 down and 3655 up using my WFI with Comcast as my base broadband provider. I did enable "best WFI".

Out fo curiosity, what's been the hit on battery with this option?
Wifi signal is great, however this is the 3rd HTC phone I've had that wont stay connected to wifi. I get no service in my house so wifi is a must, however after some time it disconnects, then tries to reconnect but hangs on "AUTHENTICATING WITH WIRELESS". My galaxy s 4g never disconnected on me, but the mytouch 3g, mytouch 4g and now my evo 3d cant hold a connection.
It's good, but it gets better when your in WiFi settings, tap menu button, hit advanced, and click best WiFi performance.

Agreed I can actually get a signal OUTSIDE of my house. I am very pleased with the wifi reception
I was getting 3m down, 1m up with my rooted Hero. My laptop gets 20m down 5m up. The 3vo is getting 14m down, 4m up; amazing!
I'm currently eligibility for upgrade
Oh ya finally after two year O EVO. I wish to get this wonderful EVO 4g LTE but no coverage LTE
So now I don't want to go down from 4g Wimax to 3g hmmmmm coz I live in San Francisco. We don't have sprint LTE this year. I think my decided to wait at list until my upgrade is expire.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Wimax sucked anyways, Im in STL and it was one of the first in the country, and it was GREAT the first couple months.... then it became worse than 3g.
Its expected that the San Francisco area will have LTE within the next 6 months as it, parts of New York, Florida, and a couple other states are listed for Round 2 of the LTE rollout, which is expected to be completed before the end of 2012. Sprint's LTE network is currently being installed in the Los Angeles area by Alcatel Lucent.
The 4g was never an issue with me. I've had 4g since almost day 1. The only time I use it is for downloading large files. I can probably count on all my fingers and toes how many times that has happened. My 3g speeds are good; usually around 1-1.2 mb/s, and that is usually plenty fast.
Or I use wifi when available. Until they figure out a way to keep it from killing your battery, I probably won't use it very often.
If their work continues the way it is and on schedule I should have LTE by the end of the year..But personally I dont mind if I have to wait..Im in my truck 10 hours a day with a verizon 3G/4G LTE Hot Spot for work for my laptop and wifi needs.
Pre-ordered and waiting for release.
Phones to awesome to not get. Lte or no lte. In due time we shall have lte

We never had wimax in Reno, so the 4g on my Evo 4g was pretty useless to me. With Sprint who knows if we will see lte before my new Evo 4g lte is up for upgrade.
When I got my og evo on release day the nice folks at the Sprint store said we would get 4g by the end of the year. So I am pretty skeptical whenever I here we will get something from Sprint.
I use my connection at home for my phone. My job takes me all over the state, so 3g is what I get most of the time for gps navigation. If LTE will be as fast as they say, I might just use it for internet at home. I live in Kansas City with a 4g tower 1/4 mile away. I get full bars 4g currently.

3g when out and about.
never did use 4g much even though i had a tower around the corner. had to keep the phone plugged in or else batt would die. 4g tethering worked well when i had no internet, but dropped alot. Returned to 3g on my tethering occasions.
4g uses up too much battery to leave on and expect a signal around town, when the towers were rare.
hopefully i can leave LTE on and be accustomed to/get used to using instead of 3g.

I'm in the same boat, I used Wimax maybe once a month, just because if I actually had to download a large file, that's all I could do. The battery would be dead within an hour, hour and a half tops. The battery life with the lte chip being integrated is supposed to be phenomenal compared to what we we used to.
Luckily I live in one of the first wave cities, so I expect LTE to be available in some areas already as towers are already up in some areas once the phone comes out if not by the following month once they officially go live. I honestly just like most never really used 4g on my evos however the way it was implemented was flawed by default. radio on a different chip and not enough coverage so constant losing signal and swiching left battery life to be desirable. I expect with LTE it'll be different once the ball gets rolling. The radio is on the same dye as the soc so better battery by default. Sprint will have better LTE coverage than wimax so again that will help with battery life as you won't have to keep switching between the two. If you read the manual unlike verizon sprint has a toggle to disable LTE and only use evdo. I'm sure this will help people who don't live in LTE markets as well as those of us who want to get a little extra juice out of it. Based on the reviews of the AT&T One X though, battery life even with LTE on should still be pretty good.
I live in Miami and the LTE is very spotty, I don't have it at home; only used it to download big files anyways so I'm not worried about it. In the end it's a premium fee for a monster smartphone, very worth it. I would be really happy to get LTE, though, since my wifi at home is total crap :/ and it's not going to be as much of a battery hog as it was on the OG evo.

Most of you guys don't care about 4g.
But that's not a true, unless your smart phone using only in and out calls.
If using internet and WiFi tether you need a 4g to browser speed downloading, gaming etc... I'm not talking in your f*** home or work place only. You know how crappy is sprint 3g or tell me you are ambitious for new smart phone instead of what can make it a difference?
For me nothing this phone with out 4g lte .
Coz I use a lot internet and WiFi tether that's why I bought smart phone with gps capability, 8mp camera and so on
Please don't laying me Sprint 3g good enough.
I can say congrats for who has 4g lte by next month or early July.

There's the key there - for you. Many people will be ecstatic to have a phone with a bigger, more beautiful screen, more responsiveness, a way better camera, stock ICS, Sense 4.0 (maybe), better WiFi speeds (n capabilities), NFC capabilities, Google Wallet, the ability to take pictures while shooting movies, a nicer kickstand, a thinner profile (and lighter), better sound quality, a dedicated camera button, and better battery life (due to stock ICS, and efficient processor).
If none of those things are worth anything to you, I'd say you're in the minority here. I'll enjoy the heck out of this phone until LTE and HD voice arrive. Have fun with your phone.

I'm in the Austin, TX market and already Waco (part of the Austin market for Sprint purposes) has 4G LTE working...people posting 21Meg download speeds already. They are supposed to have the rest of the Austin market done by July (don't remember where I read it, but it makes sense).
Clear rolled out the WiMax 4G, but SPRINT is rolling this out, and they know they have to get it right because they are in stiff competition with Verizon and AT&T. Houston and Dallas are other Texas markets that will be in first wave, though I'm not sure if they are already up and running. I got my pre-order in today and I'm eager to get my hands on it.
And while many people do use the 4G, if you're in a building all day and not out on the roads, you probably didn't get much signal anyhow. With LTE, in-building signal is supposed to be much better, so when you're not able to get on WiFi, it will be nice. Can't wait!
Where are you finding this info? Let me know if you find stuff about the austin rollout. gonna be hard to give up full signal wimax at work for too long...

Does anyone use this app on the Evo 4g LTE? Does it play well with the phone? Do you see an extra battery drain or lag?
Thanks

I use tasker all the time. Used it with my OG evo. Have not noticed any issues with new evo lte.
I use it also on my EVO LTE and haven't noticed any issues at all. No extra battery drain that I can tell.
Been using it on my EVO LTE for a couple weeks, no issues to report and no noticeable hit on battery.
i use it too, with no hits on battery or anything. I'm thinking that some location based tasks might hurt the battery, though _ the type of thing where it has to ping gps every few minutes and stuff like that.
Works as perfectly on my EVO 4G LTE as it did on my EVO 4G.
Am I the only one who has noticed poor 3G on this phone? Even poor for sprint standards. Especially at places where I normally get my best data I'm getting piss poor and even going into roaming. My desk at work is usually where I get my best speeds and now I can barely send a text message. I've only had the phone for a week but since I've got it 3G has been awful and even WiFi hasn't been spot on... I fails a lot dropping signal if my screen turns off for to long which sucks when I'm downloading a Rom or something of the sort, and before you ask I do have it set to keep WiFi on while the screen is off. I love the phone and would hate to get rid of it because I can't use it. So hopefully its not just me maybe sprint has something going in my area that started the moment I got my phone... I'm in Orlando, FL and I'm running stock with root

Naw ur not the only one....with all the upgrades to both the 3g and 4g LTE my 3g has been hit and miss.....good some days and bad others....hopefully it'll all get corrected real some only saving grace for me right now is wi-fi
Underlying idea is, its not the phone... its the network.
Past experience doesn't guarantee present performance
MIne is working well.
Wifi is performing very good for me, and the other day at my apt around 6pm i got 1.9megs down.. 3G..
Its a tower that has been upgraded but still have yet to stay connected to 4G longer then a minute..
No there is an issue...I had a moto photon that was very fast on 3g.....when i switched to the evo lte...i noted it seem to be a lot slower...figure it was the network
Well i went back on my photon while i unlock the evo....and again the photon just flys compared to the evo....there is an issue..a big one
