One of the guides to rooting said I need the OEM OS file for my carrier. My problem is that I'm on Bell and this is a Bell phone - the phone isn't officially released here yet and so no OS files floating around.
Am I screwed as far as rooting goes then or is there a way I can root the phone?
Enter *#1234# in your phone, what does it say?
You should still be able to root or load other stuff but if Bell has some version that is not avail for download then you can't restore to that unless it comes out later (who knows when)
Out of topic here....but how did you manage to get a Bell phone when it is not released yet?
Can you please let us know the firmware and modem version ??
I'm thinking about getting the phone from Bell and using it on Rogers. Where did you get it?
Is the phone the same as the version Virgin mobile will be offering?
Can you post more detail about version etc. And which rooting/unlocking techniques you used?
There might be alternative.
What's your baseband kernel, b/c some Vietnam guy just got the KG2 Kernel.
I've been wanting to get one of these, how did you manage to get one before release date?
i also got Bell S2 and wants to root the phone but need info on how to ?

I'm requesting a Rogers 2.3.2 FTF file to use with the flashtool.
There was a 2.3.3 update one posted already, but there are none for the original.
Basically, my phone was screwed, factory reset didn't work, only thing that fixed it was flashing the ftf for 2.3.3, but now I'm stuck with no root. I do use the Rogers apps, and the UK generic obviously doesn't have them.
I'm hoping someone with the required knowledge could make a 2.3.2 for those of us who want to root first, then update with OTA, with the Rogers software included. I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to have 2.3.3 with root, and not be stuck using the UK generic.
If someone knows how to get the Rogers apps (like the "My Account" one) working in the UK generic, then I'll try that instead.
Much thanks in advance.
EDIT: Screwed up on the thread name and forgot to write what the request was. I apologize for that.
UPDATE: Turns out the Rogers apps are downloadable in the Android market. Would still like the official version though.
can u unlock bootloader on Rogers branded phones?
if yes then u can use the prerooted kernel i have posted here:

Rogers phones are locked. We are hoping for a method to unlock our bootloaders
I just finished running the Odin flash of Chainfire CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG6-v4.1-CWM4.zip, thinking that I will upgrade my firmware to 2.3.4. However after I do the setting checking:
setting > About Phone > Android Version > ???
it still showing 2.3.3??? Is that actually work like that, that when rooting, the firmware is upgraded but it will not show in the setting info?
My CWM clearly already changed to CF-Root 4.1 after I open and check it in CWM Manager.
TIA
custom roms make the upgrades on the android version (if included in their package), not the kernels.
Thanks for the info, really helpful

This my phone info:
PDA:KE7 / PHONE:KE4 / CSC:KD1 (XEU)
is it ok if flash and upgrade to:
XXKG6
Android 2.3.4
PDA:XXKG6| PHONE: XXKG6| CSC:XEUKD1
TIA
Yes, it will upgrade your phone to 2.3.4.
I plan to root my SGS2 but have not yet done so. I got the unlocked international edition from Amazon, and it arrived running Android 2.3.3.
Last night I created a Samsung account for myself so that I could upgrade. Then I did upgrade to 2.3.4.
Question: The Wikipedia entry on Android states that the current version of Android for phones is 2.3.6, released on September 2nd.
But when I tried to upgrade again (after having upgraded to 2.3.4) I got a message saying that no further upgrades are available.
I don't have to be on the bleeding edge but would like to at least upgrade to Android 2.3.5 (if there is a 2.3.5).
Why can't I do that (or can I do it)?
(This may in any case be irrelevant when I root -- my understanding of rooting is that to do so replaces the stock firmware, which is the whole point of rooting.)
Perhaps 2.3.5 simply isn't available yet for the SGS2, but that seems odd.

can someone maybe explain to me, what the whole reason of upgrading to 2.3.4+ is?
because I just did so. I upgraded from my 2.3.3 firmware to the latest XWKI4, from the list of the official firmwares. I hoped that by doing so, I would get the latest and greatest GTalk with video and calling options (v1.3).
But for some reason I have exactly this version, but I can not use this feature. Although the version information under applications reads, that I have 1.3 installed...

Hello All,
I have a "[email protected] #2" sign right after (under) the kernel number (which is 2.6.35.7-I9100BVKH-CL443683) on my new SGS2.
Does this mean it was already rooted? Or what does it mean?
Thanks!
It means the kernel your ROM is running was compiled by user "Root" (lol?) at workstation/computer "DELL81", nothing more.
(it's some standard info the build process puts into the compiled kernel so one can see who and where it was compiled).
Does not mean your phone is already rooted, if you didn't do so already by yourself (or had done by a friend) you still have to root it.
Actually, as I said, I bought the phone new in Prague, but it is not from the 'official' Czech distribution. It cost at least USD200.00 less this way. It was brought from Poland, and it has an Orange brand on it. And, it has Orange apps in Polish. BUT, it works with CZ T-Mobile sim card just fine. This tells me someone must have done something with it. It did upgrade the FW through Kies once already, but not to 2.3.4. I see in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278776 that people are getting 2.3.4 officially via Kies already, and tried it, but it did not work. I am new to this, so am not in a hurry to root or flash custom FW yet. So, the question is, can it be that because it was rooted (and maybe still is), it won't update to 2.3.4 officially?
You only get an update if their is an update for your product code on the Kies server .
In your case you wait for Orange Poland to update .
If it can use another sim it just means it not sim locked .
If its rooted it should have superuser app .
jje
I see.
But will it update if I have T-Mobile sim in it, or it will just see the product code, and will not care about the sim?
I live in China and I bought a GT-I9300 yesterday.
I noticed the phone was out of date when I got home so I started the update process, the first update went smoothly the phone rebooted and I checked if there was any other updates and there was one. The update downloaded successfully and rebooted to install and got to 31% and failed out and rebooted the phone.
At first I thought it was because the phone was partially set up to show that it wasn't a fake phone, so I did a factory reset and started the whole process over, and the same thing the update fails out at 31%.
The phone suggested I use Kies, but Kies says my phone's current firmware version is not supported via kies.
So I took to the internet to try to manually update, I spent the better part of yesterday and today trying to figure out everything about this phone but I just can't seem to get a 100% conclusion on anything so I don't want to try flashing anything and possibly messing up my phone. There just seems to be 50 different models that all have different roms and I don't want to flash the wrong one.
Info from Kies: Current firmware version: PDA:LF1 / PHONE: LEF / CSC: LF1 (XXX)
From my phone:
Model Number: GT-I9300
Android Version: 4.0.4
Baseband Version: I9300XXLEF
Build Number: IMM76D.I9300ZSALF1
Part of the problem was the guy was selling both the Western Europe model and the Hong Kong model, I was told I was getting the Hong Kong but he may have given me the Western Europe model by mistake.
From what I have read XX means means Western Europe model but another website said ZS was Hong Kong? I don't know if I go off the Baseband version or the build number.
Then I thought I will just root the device, slap CMW on it do a backup and then slap CM10.1 on it and call it a day. But following this rooting guide I need to know which version of the phone I have first.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671969
Also CM10.1 only has 1 I9300 (International) build is that a universal I9300 ROM that is safe to use on my phone?
Long post but the help is appreciated!
So I think I figured out why this isn't updating, and I think it might be rooted as I see the SuperSU app installed. I don't really care if my device is rooted or not. SuperSU has a "Clean up feature" but it isn't uninstalling and removing root.

I'd suggest you return the phone to the guy and ask for a completely clean no root version of the phone. But if that's too much of a hassle right now you can just flash stock firmware using Odin.

Right I would just flash to stock with Odin, but that was part of my question. Which stock rom do I use? Or does it even matter and any ROM will work, I think I have the Hong Kong model but I am not completely sure and I don't want to risk bricking the phone with the wrong ROM.
Your phone does seem to be an International version which means any ROM except the China ROMs will work.
The reason Kies will not update the phone is because the CSC is XXX which is pretty strange but seeing how the phone came rooted someone has been playing.
Do you want to use the phone in HK or CN? and do you need Chinese input?

I use it in China, I rarely to HK. I don't need the Chinese language on the phone although it would be nice as I am trying to learn Chinese, but I could live without it.
Thanks for your help! Much appreciated.
I a going to flash this ROM today and see what happens!
United Kingdom 2012 December 4.1.2 I9300XXELL4 I9300OXAELL4
I'm in a similar situation,
Baseband: I9300XXLFB
Build Number: IMM76D.I9300XXBLFB
Let us know how you go with the update. Thanks

The ROM you are going to flash should be ok, if you ever need Chinese input then flash any ZS or you can just install Google pinyin IME.
BTW If flashing the ROM you was going to, does work ok, then your better off having the International version than the Chinese version anyway, since you are not stuck to waiting for Chinese ROMs or installing hybrid ROMs.
Yeah I am having trouble finding a download that will work here in China and my VPN connection is down so it will be sometime before I can even download this ROM. samfiles or samfirmware can't remember the website, is blocked in China, hotfile.com is blocked which seem to be about the only 2 websites that host all the firmware downloads.
EDIT: Speak of the devil, my VPN service just released an update for their connection app, I am downloading the ROM now. Should be able to report back in around an hour and let you all know.
EDIT: Spoke to soon, VPN issues again.
would someone be willing to download I9300XXELL4_I9300OXAELL4_BTU.zip for me and throw it up on a dropbox account or some other website besides hotfile.com I am having trouble downloading this file from China.

Yay, I was able to get my VPN connection to stay on long enough to download the firmware and I was able to successfully apply 4.1.2 Jelly Bean to my phone!
Thanks for all your help!
Kies now reads: PDA:LL4 / Phone: LL4 / CSC: LL4
