I've just ordered the SGS2 and looking into ATT gophone plan but not sure which one to choose...I keep hearing this $15 ATT Dumb Phone plan but what exactly do you guys mean by that???
Anything by ATT will suck. Try T mobile
the $15 plan is with a 2 year commitment and is called "medianet" I believe. the pay as you go or prepaid service that you originally mentioned does not require commitment and does not come with that $15 option. Check their site for details.

op-the dumb plan only includes messaging/data and does not include voice plans. research which one is better, prepaid or regular service + dumb plan.

If you go prepaid, they have a $50 unlimited voice, text, and data for featurephones. This is called the "$50 Monthly Unlimited Plan" GoPhone plan. Since they don't know your phone is a smartphone if will work with data. Technically smartphones are supposed to buy data separately for $25 more for 500MB (or you can buy less). But you don't have to.
If you are going to regular contract way then you pick the minutes you want, a crappy flip phone, and add the unlimited data package to it.
Or you might be able to get a SIM card for free from online or a store. But don't show them your phone. Then go home and activate the service and add the unlimited featurephone data. Tell them its a featurephone. If you just get the SIM card and no phone, then you might be able to signup without a contract at all. The data option is called "Data Unlimited for Non-Smartphones" for $15. If you want unlimited texting and data then get "Messaging & Data Unlimited for Non-Smartphones" for $30.
You could get unlimted everything (data included) for $50 with their prepaid plan.

Will that $50 unlimited everything work for smartphones like s2?
My plan is to buy a unlocked galaxy s2 from amazon, buy a $50 prepaid plan with some crap phone from ATT, and use that simcard in my unlocked galaxy s2. Will this work? Will I get 3g or 4g speeds for data if i do like this? For example, if I buy a crap phone like Sgh - a107 with $50 package, and use that simcard in galaxy s2, will i be able to use 3g? will 3g be disabled for that sim card, since sgh a107, does not support 3g?
Also, dont we get free phones in prepaid?

You get HSPDA+ speeds where available.
I don't believe there is unlimited data for the SGS2. You have to purchase a data plan which is $5 for 10 MB or $15 for 100 MB. See link.
I use the $0.10 minute plan and I do 100 MB for $15 each month. You should purchase $100 at a time because the expiration is a year instead of 90 days or less. Data plans can be set to automatically renew each month.
Basically, I pay $20 per month. I use GrooveIP for over Google Voice when I'm on WiFi. I'm not a big talker. I prefer email and texts (unlimited free texts over Google Voice by the way).
We can deceive ATT right? Many people do that. I will buy some dumb phone with a prepaid plan, and use that sim card in my unlocked galaxy s2 .
the whole point of the dumb phone plan is that you get unlimited data for 15 dollars by using the dumbphone media net plan. i guess going pre paid is a decent idea too. but really the benefit is getting unlimited data for 15 bucks.

Has anyone actually tested and used the GoPhone plan with an SGS2? I guess in theory it should work but most of us are either on a grandfathered plan or using the Data for non-Smartphone (aka: dumb-phone) plan on a prepaid account.
Edit:
Have you even looked at the GoPhone data plans? They're pretty ridiculous. 500MB is $25.00. Add that to the $50 unlimited voice and messaging and you're already at $75.00. A prepaid plan with less voice but unlimited data is a better value.

Yes, me. I dropped my family plan and switched to a GoPhone plan. First, I ported my number to Google Voice and then went in an AT&T store and got a new SIM and $100 worth of voice and data. FYI, you can prepay up to $500 if you only want to be bothered occasionally.
The GoPhone plans are good if you don't talk on your phone much and don't watch Netflix movies over 3G. With Google Voice and Groove IP, you can make free VOIP calls. With Google Voice, you get unlimited free texts. Good enough for me.

500MB of data is $25.00. You're paying $100 for 2GB of data that you can get on a prepaid plan without scamming for $25.00. How in anyway is that a "good deal?" I easily can blow through 500MB in a couple days with moderate use.

you can buy off contract (out right), but if your $20 data plan is not for a smart phone. The system will automaticlly put you on the 2g data plan and you will lose your unlimited. Now if your $20 unlimited data is for a smart phone i would make sure that when you purchase the phone, talk to the rep and make sure that they still have you on the unlimited plan...there are way around this...hope this helps...
Currently using it on a Fuse on 3G
So the big issue is $20 per month plus ~$600 for the phone = unlimited data (2 years = $1080)
or
$25 per month plus ~$150 for the phone = 2gig per month (2 years = $750)
Currently using less then 2gig per month but thats with the Fuse....struggling with what to do but I guess we need to see real prices first.
if your on a smartphone unlimited plan, you are locked in for unlimited data on any smart phone... you have tol let the rep know that you have unlimited data when you get the atrix...

If you are on a non-smartphone data plan and get an Atrix it is extremely likely that AT&T will detect you and require you to switch data plans.
Just curious, why haven't they detected my vibrant?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Because the Vibrant isn't one of the phones AT&T issues.

This isn't the case. At least, it wasn't when I quit Radioshack a year ago.
All people on AT&T that had the original $20 unlimited data are entitled to it, for as long as they want. You just have to tell them you had it. They can check your plan to see if you previously had it, and if you did, will be able to keep it.
Although, AT&T royally ****ed me when I quit Radioshack(They cancelled my Employee Plan, and I lost all my benefits, they then went ahead and told me they have no record of me ever being a *customer,* so I wasn't entitled to the older plans.)
Again, this was a year ago; They might have changed things since then. I would call and ask.
Realistically, though, 2gb on a phone isn't the easiest thing to cap out.. Especially when the phone has built in Wi-Fi.
I am very interested the atrix and would luv to rid myself of the vibrant. I am going strickly american.

Right, if you had an old data plan you can keep it. But AT&T categorizes some plans as "non-smartphone" plans, and if you get an AT&T smartphone they will notify you that they are switching you to a smartphone plan. I know multiple people that had this happen to them, starting around November.

Correct.
I still have my unlimited data plan from my first Tilt... used it for my Tilt 2.. and I plan on getting the Atrix 4G.
I assume I'm safe as long as I tell/remind/make sure with them, correct?
I'm on a non-smartphone unlimited data on my milestone due to AT&T not recognizing the phone.
My thought process is to get a Bell version Atrix if they are the same hardware as the AT&T and flash AT&T's firmware when it becomes available. That way AT&T can't recognize the IMEI and make me get the higher data plan. I'm currently on $10 unlimited data since i have the unlimited text.
Anything wrong with this thought process? Just curious. Thanks!

Nope, you're incorrect.
If Atrix has a new simcard format, and will force u to get a new simcard, then perhaps.
If standard old sim works with Atrix, you will NOT be upgraded/changed.
This topic was around for a long time, and I'm tired of seeing this. I've been using my simcard for about 5 years now, coming from HTC Kaiser to TouchPro to TouchPro2 to NexusOne to Captivate. Same 1 simcard. Same $20/unlim data.
In fact, I called AT&T (about a different issue) and decided to ask them outright about this policy. They specifically told me that they will not change your account to a more expensive data plan by themselves, unless you ask them to. So I asked (off the record) whether it's ok that I keep the same simcard and using same data plan (i use up around 2-6GB per month data) as I sell/buy my phones off contract. They said they don't care, unless they want me to change it, they won't.
So, 5-6 years with AT&T and 5 (soon to be 6) phones I changed tell me you're wrong.
My advice: sell your N1/captivate/g2/whatever, add $100/$200, get Atrix off contract, plop in the old simcard, never tell AT&T about it, and live happy.

There's a ton of evidence to the contrary, including my own experience. I bought an N1 outright and signed up for AT&T service. At the suggestion of a friend, I went into the corp store with an unlocked feature phone so I could sign up for the $15 unlimited data plan. I did, swapped SIMs, and in less than a day I got a text saying I had been switched to the 2 GB DataPro plan.
AT&T does IMEI scans, and if they are pretty good at telling which phones are smartphones. It's not 100% perfect, but pretty good.
That being said, there should be no reason that you need a new SIM for the Atrix unless you have a REALLY old pre-3G SIM. But, don't count on being able to keep a non-smartphone data plan.

Big difference being that you actually tried to go and get this grandfather $15/mo unlimited plan, which is no longer available. I got this plan many years ago, before iPhone, and just kept renewing my contract on the same terms, which AT&T was happy about. A year ago they already started doing away with unlimited plans, yet they gladly renewed my contract with unlimited data, even though I used the contract extension subsidy to get a new TouchPro2 from them, right from their store.
So maybe the moral here is that if you have the old plan with unlimited data - u can just keep extending it every 2 years without trouble. Cannot do that for new contracts.

Maybe we have our wires crossed here. Data Unlimited for non-smartphones is still very much available and is $15/month. But if you try to use it with a smartphone, 95% of the time they're going to automatically switch you to a DataPro plan for smartphones once they do an IMEI scan. This is exactly what happened with me. I signed up with a dumbphone, and within a day of switching my SIM to my N1 I got a text saying I had been switched.
Now if you are grandfathered into the old unlimited smartphone data plan, the absolutely you should have no trouble keeping it when swapping SIMs.

Ok ... here is how you can see if you can keep your old plan:
Check the features you have on your line ... If you have a feature called "Smartphone Exclusion" then no matter what ... AT&T wont be able to put the required data plans on you line automatically (the $15 or $25 / month)
If you have unlimited texting for the family as well ... then by providing a non-smartphone IMEI for your line you can get unlimited internet for $10/month.

I can confirm this as well. I spoke to an AT&T rep last night and he explained to me that all of my phones have "Data Exclusion", and that even if I bought the Atrix at the 2-year contract price from AT&T's website, it would not be able to apply a smartphone data plan to my account. I have the Media Net plan on one number with the Tilt 2, and no data on line 2, and I bought the Aria for line 2 and they did not apply any data to it.
He did warn me that if I made any changes to the data features on any phone I MIGHT lose the data exclusion, and that if I bought a phone from an AT&T store the rep might screw up and add the data, since Data Exclusion is such a rare feature, but that if I bought online the system would just leave me alone.
Now I just need to know if "4G" data works on the old Media Net plans.

Since I have been on the phone with ATT for the last 3 days it has been one thing after another..first data issues coming from the iPhone they switched me over to a 2GB cap called them up they "fixed it" (basically added the smartphone pack. Yesterday got a few calls at work I let them go to VM...so i thought. Somehow my VM got messed up had to call about that. This morning I didn't get one text from anyone found a bit odd since me and the wife text a lot during work when we can. Checked online I had no text plan??? WTF!?? Called them up and guess what I had an older 1500 text plan they don't offer that so i cant get it...really?? come on ATT I just bought a phone no contract nothing should have changed.
So as of now everything seems ok, still working have a case open for my text plan and have gotten some credit back for the data stuff. But really i should have never gone through this whole mess when all I did was buy a phone out right and put my old sim in it.

AT&T recognizes the IMEI on all of their iphones. When I put my sim into my friends iphone, it asked me to update my data plan. Obviously, I did not...
It works on the Atrix, though I don't doubt if AT&T knew which phone I had, they would probably want me to upgrade. I asked a rep many years ago, they said I have some sort of legacy feature grandfathered in, but if I make any type of changes to my plan, I would lose it. I cannot remember what they call it. Thus I cannot purchase a phone with an AT&T contract. Pretty lame, but that has been my experience and what I have been told. Not all reps know what they are talking about.
I'm not here to argue with anyone. I know which plan I have, and I know I have an Atrix. All I did was take my sim from my old phone out and put it into my new Atrix and it works without complaining for me to upgrade my data plan.
However, I am not impress with the HSUPA speeds, and it seems everyone has the same issue whether they are on a $30 unlimited plan, or $20 medianet bundle.
I hope this helps, good luck guys!
Well, I don't see anything called "Smartphone Exclusion" in either of my lines (this is a 2 line family plan, only my phone has the medianet unlimited).
I guess I'll need to wait and buy a Bell Canada version of the phone?
If you are checking it online, it doesn't show as a regular feature. There is a link that shows "other features" ... or just call them up and ask if you have it.
I did upgrade one of my lines, they added $15 in the store. I just called them and got that off of the line, luckily the smart phone exclusion did not go away!
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
The smartphone exclusion feature only covers you for your current device. If you put your SIM into a phone that Att recognizes as a valid smartphone that is different than the one you currently have on file, your grandfather status is gone and you get a smartphone data plan. Happened to a few people I know. No commitment pricing has nothing to do with it, since its in the Att terms of service, I think. If you are getting grandfather status back, the sales people are likely making exceptions.
i dont know but Mine too is media net plan since touch pro 2, nexus one, captivate and atrix.

As a Vibrant owner, I'm of course using t-mobile. My 2 year contract is up, and I want to pay the lowest amount. I barely use my call minutes, and want unlimited texts and data. What plan should I go with?
The Tmobile site makes this confusing, because I see a $30per month plan with unlimited texts and date, and 100 minutes, but I can't switch to it.
That's because its prepaid.
For now I'm on T-Mobile prepaid $30, 1500 voice/text combo and 30mb data.
Not much data but I always use WiFi.
$49.99.
Classic plan?
500 Minutes, Unlimited (2GB 4G) data & Unlimited texts? :|
The online $30 plan is a special online only and I believe requires a new prepaid phone or acct/number.
I currently use unl talk text and data with first 100mb at 3/4g. I have gone over the 100mb a few times and don't really notice any decrease in speed. There is a $45 unl talk text and data from Walmart straight talk. They use tmo and at&t. You just have to get a sim that works on tmo from them. This will also require unlocking and a new number.

I don't know the prices, but you could try simple mobile if they're in your area. It's the gsm equivalent of metro/cricket. I believe they run off t mobile towers too. You might have to unlock it though.
100 minutes unlimited text and 5 GB 4g plan does exist. It's only available at Walmart! Google it. I have Simple Mobile $40 unlimited everything plan for about a year and it's decent, but network speeds are about 120 kbps...SM also has a $50 unlimited full 4g speed plan

Yeah, I'm doing the switch next month to this but be forewarned, if you use Wi-Fi calling, it still counts against your allotted 100 minutes. I did some research on this a couple days ago and you could add another 1500 minutes (I think) for $10 extra. You can't beat that deal
OP here. I made my switch today, and something funny happened.
I went to the TMobile store, told them my 2-year contract was up, and I want to be on a monthly plan. The store representative asked, "why?" and I told him I'd rather pay $50 per month than $90. He was confused and said I had to call customer service to switch. Whatever.
I got back home, called customer service, and they transferred me to a call center which based on the accent and forced "Americanisms" is probably in India. Just to see if I could get away with it, I told them I wanted the $30 per month plan, which is supposed to only be for new accounts. The rep on the phone said OK, and now I pay $30 per month for 100 voice minutes, and unlimited text and data!
woohoo!
That's a good plan. The first 5gb at 3/4g speed, then they throttle back however I have the $50 unl talk+texts and 100mb data @3/4g. I go over 100mb all the time and rarely notice speed reduction except for downloading large files, but that's what WiFi is for.

The rep on the phone said OK, and now I pay $30 per month for 100 voice minutes, and unlimited text and data!
woohoo!

Are you kidding me? I don't know how many times I tried to get switched to that plan and I got absolutely nowhere. Are you sure you got the unlimited plan and not the other $30 plan?

http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/monthly-4g-plans
1. order prepaid sim:
http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-phone/T-Mobile-Prepaid-SIM-Activation-Kit
2. when it arrives in mail, activate it here:
http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/plans/ActivateCodes.aspx
Just follow activation steps and when you get to step 3 "Select your plan and services" there will be special for $30 plan with unlimited web and 100 mins.
I have no problems switching to that plan myself online. I did buy a prepaid sim card from a real tmobile store. They told me I could switch plans myself later on so I bought it, prepaid sim can go to other prepaid plans as well as contract plans (not that I would but that's what they said)
I've been on walmart's Family Mobile almost a year and have no complaints.
I came from att and was able to port my numbers. They were working by the time I got to my car.
Yes its possible. It can be a bit of a pain but I insisted that I had to have it, mainly because it's the best deal I know of.
100 minutes (we have WiFi calling too)
Unlimited text
Unlimited data (throttled after 5gb)
If you originally were forced to sign one of their no contract unlimited plans like I was then all you have to do is call T-Mobile. 611 if you already have service. Talk to a representative and they will likely tell you that it is a Walmart and online exclusive. If you can't convince him to switch you over then ask for a supervisor. Explain to them your situation that you were told by the people at the store that you can switch over by calling 611. They will probably tell you that you were misinformed. Just keep pushing that you wanted this plan to begin with or any other excuse that you see fit. I eventually got through to him and he made an exception and very easily switched me over from the unlimited plan to the $30 prepaid plan.
Good luck

Did you buy the phone outright or on the payment plan?

There is an easier route to all of this. Just leave your $30 plan UNTOUCHED. This means when you first buy the phone don't switch from prepaid to post-paid at all. Let them sign you up on hopefully the lowest $50 plan and be proud of your phone. They cant charge you anything if you dont activate you sim! <---------------------- IF YOU PAID FULL PRICE OF THE PHONE
Option A (regular sim to micro-sim)
Now, all you have to do is Call T-Mobile Prepaid (611) using existing prepaid account and tell them you want to switch your sim card to the micro-sim. They will ask you for the sim number and you will be on your way.
Option B (Micro-Sim on Existing Prepaid Account)
Just slip in micro sim of pre-paid and it just works. If not, reboot

EIP is monthly. You would have to just settle the balance and get the right rep in order to migrate to prepaid.
Thanks for the response! Now i know what to do
I've just read a huge amount of posts on the Gear S and carrier services.
I use my Note 3 (and just got a Note 4) - on Straight Talk.
I called ST today to ask about a cell plan for the Gear S - long story short, I spoke to 2 guys who 'knew nothing about it'...in fact, the 2nd guy hung up on me. So much for ST.
So I keep hearing about $10.00 plans, etc. - but I can't seem to find one. I know nothing about 'pay as you go' just ST. and customer service the past 2 years I've had them has been miserable for me.
I have a Gear S that I bought unlocked. So, anyone want to clue me in on where to get cell service for this that doesn't cost the equivalent of a full cell phone/data plan?
Thanks, and I appreciate any help, advice, tips, etc. you can give me. Sorry for seeming confused. I am.
thanks,
2lip
The only way to get a cheaper device plan is to go with the big-four using a shared plan. Otherwise, you will have to pay just like another smart phone using voice, SMS and data.

I took my unlocked Gear S to T-mobile, was not a customer with any type of shared plan. I use AT&T on my Note 4 and bought the Gear S from them, then had them unlock it free of charge (took two days and some complaining). I have a grandfathered unlimited AT&T plan and I'm not switching to a shared plan just to add the watch.
at the T-mobile store I signed up for the $15/month 500mb data and unlimited talk/text smartwatch plan. This did require a credit check since it was post-paid, the only caveat I guess. $10 fee for the sim card and activation.
Even better- The rep was fairly sure that with a nano to microsim adapter, I could use this T-mobile plan in any device (phone, tablet, etc...). $15/month is dirt cheap. Can be bumped to 1gb data for another $5 ($20 total). T-mobile doesn't work quite as well as AT&T, but wow that's a sweet deal.
Now, if you have T-mobile service... they'll give you a $10 discount on the smartwatch plan. I think I may cancel my plan after this month, and have a friend who's a T-mobile customer add the line to their account. I'll give them like $80 for the year. Sounds pretty solid.
My other option was a pay-as-you-go H2O nano-sim. I think their cheapest plan is $25/month, but you can do pay-as-you-go plans- something that might be sufficient for the watch.
Those are pretty much the best two options right now, unless someone else has a better idea. There has been some question as to whether the forwarding will always work correctly going between two different carriers. Time will tell on that.
I am with Tmobile, and I love it. I only pay $5 a month for unlimited talk/text and 500mb data on my Gear S. Also, don't know if this is exclusive of Tmobile, but my Gear S be pumping 4G!!!
Oh boy!!
M Gear S says 5G so you lose
Agreed: the T-mo plan is the cheapest out there for the watch. It's $5/month for existing customers, or $15/month for non Tmo customers. The plan is called "wearables plan", and I could not find it on their site, guess you'll have to call them and ask for it.
If interested, it is also possible to add unlimited international calling to the wearables plan. It is usually $10/month, but they are running a promo that makes it only $5/month. It gives you unlimited talk (to landlines) and text to a bunch of countries, and you will be grandfathered into the $5/month deal as long as you remain a customer with them even after it goes back up to 10/month.
Oh, and for Tmo, "plan" does not imply any kind of contract: you can cancel whenever you please, so it's not much of a risk to just try it out and see if it's for you.
