flashing anything removes baseband and signal - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

the other day i DL and flashed CM7 trigger redux. i love everything about it except the stock kernal. when i first flashed the rom everything i flashed after that would take away my baseband and my signal completely, rendering my phone useless unless i connected to a wifi. i then managed to get a kb5 modem for cm7.1, which worked just fine. however i still cannot get a kernal on my phone. i took the cm7 kernals for 2.3.4, including platypus and the nightlys [they are all located in the bible]
im guessing since the 7.1 modem flashed just fine, i need to find a kernal for cm7.1?
are there any in circulation atm? or would the cm website be the best place for these kernals?
i apologize for the noob questions, but i am new to 2.3

Ok, so odin'd back to stock, reflashed, even tried a diff cm7 version. Still no success...wtf?

what kernel are you flashing?

look for an updated version of the kernel.
If there is not one, don't flash the kernel.

I'm on version 2.3.4 I figured I could flash a kernel updated to that version via the bible. Or is cm7.1 something completely different?

Yeah my imei number is there. This is crazy, I've never had any problems flashing anything before. Its like my phone won't let me flash any other kernel, but the one that comes with cm7. I can flash cm7.1 modems just fine though

How the hell did you know that kernal was going to work? What makes this kernal different then the others I tried?

There are 3 kernels right now for the vibrant updated enough to work with the latest nightlies. But only glitch and kernel de jour have been updated, and personally glitch seems to be better (plus, I'm running glitch v11 right now and have been following that thread).
I'm pretty sure all the CM7 kernel links in the bible are too old and therefore, you lose your baseband.

To run bionix fusion 1.1 do I install bionix rom and the fusion 1.1 kernel? Or is the kernel part of the rom? Or is the kernel the samerthing as the rom?

If you downloaded it from the team whiskey website, it should come with the kernel designated by the name of the file (Stock, JAC, or KK). If that's the case, you don't have to flash a kernel separately.
All Bionix roms come in kernal flavors....they are built into the roms themselves.
Pick the version you want--BE CAREFUL OF VOODOO--for future flashes you will need to disable it. Don't forget or you will be in a world of hurt to fix it.

I have been told that yes, the nandroid backup will backup the kernel as well. My wife's vibrant has the hardware lock fix and it didn't overwrite it when I flashed Bionix 1.9.1 so I would assume you won't lose the fix either, just try to get into recovery or download mode via hardware after the flash to see if it stuck.

You will have to odin back to stock and check repartition and efs clear.
The 2.3 roms are still a bit buggy and are not complete, if you do not have Moderate to advanced flashing skills, then I would not recommend.

[Q] CM7 to Stock 2.2

After much thought regarding the 911 issue with CM7, I have decided to downgrade back to 2.2. Although 2.2 is outdated, it has a better GPS, battery life, and working 911.
What I want to know is how can I wipe everything before downgrading back to stock? This includes all music and various files left around by me throughout the years. I also want to know what the best kernel for 2.2 is in terms of battery life or should I leave it as stock?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
format internal and external sd card under mounts and storage in recovery. Bali kernel
Sent from my T959 using XDA App
I don't think formatting will work because the recovery is updated and trying to install and older 2.2 ROM will complain about broken scripts in CWM. You may have to Odin back if I I'm not mistaken.
Sent from my T959 using XDA App
sorry, and not just my opinion, when you start over start clean and odin to stock, 'ghost in the machine', its real

Yep thanks for the help guys. Now I'm on the process of getting Bali on here as a kernel but I don't know which one to pick. The reguler release or the UV or undervolt release.

help please....

I don't know what info you will need so please just ask if I'm to vague.
I upgraded to ics but couldn't find a root version that would give titanium backup root access, when I tried to flash back to a previous non ics ROM it would get stuck on boot screen, my only option was to reflash ics and restore a backup which was Android 2.3.6.
Now I have severe battery problems, my Baseband is - I9100XXLPB AND KERNEL is XWLA4 running CHECKROM6hd.
I'm stuck for what to do, any advice would be much welcomed, to be honest I'm not sure what question I should be asking.
I want to remain on CHECKROM6hd with jk deluxe settings with full root access, this is important for me, the Baseband and kernel look to be the ics versions but flashing gets me stuck on boot screen, only ics flash will work :/
any help advice would be great, thanks guys...

A huge number of things factor to battery.
LA4 is the kernel for GB. No ICS kernel would work on GB, it would probably prevent the phone from booting up if you did flash a ICS kernel on a GB rom.
It would probably be best to do a factory reset or even reflash the rom after a full wipe. (after you back up your data)
If you dont want to do any of that, just install betterbatterystats (can be found searching xda forum for free)
Install the app, and use your phone like you do and then check the app to see whats causing the drain.
what is the baseband? I don't understand what the baseband and kernel really do, how they relate, are they a mismatch?
thank you

Baseband is the modem, it is completely independent from the kernel and ROM, you can use ICS modems on GB and GB modems on ICS without any issue, if you are having reception or data speed issues you can change it by flashing one in CWM from the modem thread, if you aren't i'd just leave it alone.
I changed the Kernel to XXKI4,
The battery seems to be behaving as normal again
sweet

Can I take this opportunity to ask what recommendations any of you might have for a good baseband, kernel and build number, for a jk deluxe settings ROM that is battery friendly please

Nandroid backup is not backing up the Baseband, that was why you did not get back the Baseband of of your previouse ROM (Checkrom). you will be having the Baseband of the last flashed ROM...
Are you sure you have flashed the Kernel XXKI4 on the rom XWLA4 (checkrom).?
I think you mean to say is "BASEBAND" not the "KERNEL"
yes baseband lol, but it was a 'kernel' from kitchen pro I used to flash/install it....... can I blame autocorrect?
Me?
I'm English...... as in England.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
i think ki4 is a good baseband(modem, radio)and as far as kernel there r lots of good ones like siyah,neak,redpill.....first decide gb or ics...c which is best for u?cause many don like ics an reverted to gb.....but all depends on how u use....remember every phone is diff in thier own way.....
