When I need a note, it needs to be very simple to use. Simple to open, simple to type, simple to save and simple to find.
One tap from the homes screen, no title to fool with, auto save on closure and easy to find later.
I have tried several of the note apps but none seem to meet all these things
AK notepad almost does this and I use it but there are two issues I have with it.
It takes two taps to open from the home screen and the notes are embedded in the program are are not visible as separate files.
Any thoughts?

Great and pretty simple, one click for open and another to edit , than back key to save.
The best is Motorola Widget "sticky note" that comes with the stock Motorola roms.

Have you tried Evernote?
IMO "Colornote" is the best and it only uses a couple permissions, which makes me like it even more...

I agree with the color note. One tap on home screen opens app to your list of notes and one tap to open individual note. If only using one note it will open right to that note. Autosave on close. Simple easy...

Perhaps I am do not have these setup right, but..
Using a shortcut from Home...
Colornote requires one tap to open from Home, a second to select new note, a third to select Text
Evernote requires one tap to open from Home, and a second to select new note. But the curser defaults to a title field, requiring a third tap.
Geesh, I don't use notes very often but when the need arises there is a little stress to get something down fast without fumbling with the software. A note app that opened to a new note on a single tap would be sweet.

Sounds like one of those non-issue issues. You have to tap to type. Right? Short term memory?

Hello all,
I am looking into getting an HTC Flyer, but strangely I find it a little hard to get precise information as to what I find its most original feature : its stylus.
The thing is, years later, I am still using my good old HTC Blackstone/Touch HD1, its winmo os and its resistive (!) screen.
The reason is, I find using a true, really accurate stylus, as opposed to finger control, is far more comfortable in many cases and, most importantly, brings many functionalities.
I was wondering if you could help me figure if I will get this from the Flyer.
Questions :
1) Is that correct ?
- as an hardware, the stylus/digitizer is very accurate. (I am thinking approx. 0.5mm large selections like the blackstone).
- no handwriting recognition exists at present for the Flyer nor has been announced.
- there is no advanced drawing app for Android that would make real use of such a pen
2) May I :
- disable capacitive sensor when writing or drawing with the pen, so that my hand won't interfere
- make use of really accurate selection, such as :
clicking small items (ex : one small button or link while other are close) on a more or less zoomed out webpage
While editing text, select specific word parts or insert the cursor precisely
- use a Palm OS emu and get its stylus-based features like handwritten letter recognition ?
Thanks for any help/comment on these

It is quite accurate in that where you press the stylus is where the mark appears. Pressure sensitivity is also very good. It's far better than a normal capacitive stylus.

Correct. FWIW, Lenovo has handwriting recognition.

There is a note-taking app where you can draw to your heart's content, but I wouldn't describe it as "advanced".

Then the stylus is near the screen, capacitive sensing is automatically disabled, but it's not perfect. Especially when the stylus has a low battery, you will still accidentally get a touch input here and there.

In Gingerbread (which currently ships), whenever you try to use the stylus in a non-stylus app (gmail, browser, etc), it just takes a screenshot and lets you draw on that. However in the Honeycomb leak, the stylus will act like a very small finger in apps that don't have specific support for it.
In general, I'd say no, with the caveat that it might work in Honeycomb. However in an app like Notes, I think it'll still just add a drawing, not select text.

That might be possible in Honeycomb where the stylus can work like regular touch input if you use a third-party graffiti-style input method. (There are some on Android Market) In Gingerbread, I don't believe that would be possible.
The dev of the app quill resized it correctly for flyer. Pressure sensitivity works great and so does palm rejection. Just thought I'd give the heads up

The pen detection for HTC devices is included in version 6.2 and higher. You can get it on the Android Market or download the apk for free from Google Code
Thanks for your help in debugging/testing!

Is there a preferred way to get in touch with you for more testing?
I currently have both the Flyer and Jetstream. Pen input works on both with pressure sensitivity.
I can't seem to get zooming to work at all.
I have a number of suggestions as well. I had actually been thinking about forking your code to make adjustments

Press the 4-diagonal-arrows icon. Then you can pinch-to-zoom, at least it *should* work ;-)
I do check up on XDA threads; or PM me if you want...

Hi! This method works well. But when I double tap, it zooms just a tiny bit. About 5% is my guess.

Double tap switches between fill screen width and fit everything on screen. If your virtual paper is almost the same as the screen, then the change can be very small. Try e.g. A4 paper and rotate the tablet into landscape, then you'll see a huge change.

Got it. This app is perfect. Just one suggestion- Please enable pinch to zoom in quill/pencil modes so that we can zoom in to write with 2 fingers and drag with one finger. This allows writing to be more neat. at the moment I have to switch between quill and drag mode to and fro.
:: I have also noticed, while the htc note app recognises only 2 pressure levels, quill registers at least 4 different pressure levels.
I applaud the developer for getting the pen response implemented very well. I guess I was expecting more features with all the excitement, but it does what it says well. Not a replacement for the HTC notes app, but a nice little handwritten sticky note app.

Your palm will often trigger single-finger touch events, so we can't use those in the fountain pen / pencil mode.
Its intentional that the 2-finger move gesture while writing doesn't change the zoom - otherwise it is hard to fill a whole page with evenly sized handwriting.

Great app, would he nice to have the eraser button work on the pen but other than that this is awsome
Just wanted to say that quill is a great app.
Is this working with the View. The market says not compatible and when I try to install the apk I get a Parse Error.
i think it works on HC version, isn't?

I got the same error with the stock gingerbread, you need HC. I still prefer the stock Notes app. Syncing to evernote is brilliant.
Pen input mode?
There are 3 pen input options in v8.1, I tried all 3 but could only get my scribe stylus writing to appear when the "any touch event writes on screen, no gestures" mode is active. This is not so handy because I lose out on the gestures. Anyone get their scribe to work in the other modes? Seems like it should recognize the scribe in all modes!
I'm on wifi-only Flyer with latest HC release.

Maybe a difference with the software or hardware...are you on View or Wifi Flyer? HTC pushed Honeycomb update or did you install a custom/Globatron ROM?
Thanks...
Hey all!
The below information is for STOCK devices (or ROM's that are Stock and not using a custom launcher)
This is a Work In Progress, so if you have any tips that you found should have been in a manual, please feel free to post these and I will add them to the OP.
I just got my note yesterday and had to Google to find things that SHOULD have been covered in a manual or quick reference that wasn't.
Please keep in mind that this is my FIRST Samnsung phone (always been an HTC guy) so I am new to Samsung+Android+Touch Wiz and am guessing that I am not the only one.

Screen Capture Without the S Pen (Thanks kimtyson)
You can screen capture without the S Pen by placing your right hand perpendicular to the right side of the screen (in a karate chop position) and sweeping left. If you are left-handed, you can use your left hand in the same manner, sweeping left to right.
Change Brightness (Thanks Boris Sidis)
Long press the notification bar and drag left or right to change brightness.

One more for giggles.
Those are pretty standard among android phones...My addition for the note would be using your palm or side of hand to take a picture.

True to a point. Those that have had Samsung phones and know how to use and navigate Touch Wiz, probably. But I know several folks that jumped ship from HTC to Samsung and we're all new and learning.
Thanks for the input though!
Could you go into more detail as to what you mean by using my Palm or side of my hand to take a pic so I can add it?
Thanks!
I thought this was going to be like the tips and tricks from the International forum but oh man was I wrong...
Atleast someone is getting a start on it right..

I don't know if you realize he was just making a sincere suggestion. If you "karate chop" it you get a screen cap.

Screen Capture Without the S Pen
You can screen capture without the S Pen by placing your right hand perpendicular to the right side of the screen (in a karate chop position) and sweeping left. If you are left-handed, you can use your left hand in the same manner, sweeping left to right.
Long press the notification bar and drag left or right to change brightness.
Holding down on the notification bar and swiping for brightness will only work if you don't have auto brightness enabled. You can also take a screenshot by pressing Home and Power at the same time. I find that easier than karate chopping my phone.
This is normally presented to people when they set up their phones, but just in case someone skipped it, if you hold down the side button on the S-pen and double tap the screen, it opens up an s-memo over whatever app you're in so you can jot a quick note. There is also an option for this during phone calls.
EDIT: Here's a few other tricks that I haven't tested personally, but have heard from various sources:
1. If you are playing music and place your palm over the display, it quickly mutes the music.
2. While playing a video, tapping the power button will lock the display so it won't respond to touches. Pressing again will disable.
3. If you have motion activation enabled in your settings, when the phone rings you can flip it over to silence the ringtone.
4. Swiping a contact's name to the left in your contact list will quick-create a new message to them. Swiping to the right will call them.
Heres another, if you swype your fist accrpss the screen it takes a screenshot
Edit:nvm

Wish this worked without CheeseWhiz, odd it matters as the notification bar is framework, not launcher, but I couldn't make it work. Then again, I rarely managed to make the same function work in Cyanogen 7 either..
EDIT: Oops, yeah I'm an idiot, I had Automatic on, it works fine regardless of launcher.

So this is sorta like the scrapbooker function built in where you can just draw an area of the screen and it will be saved to scrapbook. But I also want to paste that in lets say an office document. How can I go about doing that?
If you hold down the spen button and circle something, it'll copy to clipboard and you can paste anywhere
