[Q] metric units in maps - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently picked up a new galaxy tab 10.1 while on a trip to the US. (Can't seem to get it in Canada yet).
Anyway, I can't help but notice that the distance units are always in imperial, which I find annoying. Most of the suggestions I've found say to change the language settings, but this doesn't work. I set it to English (UK) and nothing changed. I even tried French and noticed that maps starting using a comma for the decimal point ( ie. 0,6 mi), but still wouldn't use km.
Any suggestions? Maybe I have to get a Google maps .apk originally intended for another country?
Thanks

the maps app automatically uses the standard mesurement of the country you start your directions in.
Ex:
California to washington - miles
BC to Ontario - km
California to BC - miles
BC to California - km

Hmm, when I ask for directions this is the case; directions from my location to another place in Canada it's in km. BUT if I simply click on a place on the map, or pull up a listing, or get latitude info it still always shows 'x.x mi in y direction'.
I guess it's still in some sort of default imperial mode. I'd love to change that.

Comparisons between various Navigation Systems?

I have bought TomTom BT GPS & European Maps & it's pants!
Bad points :-
1. Even with several maps loaded on a 512mb sd it isn't possible to navigate from one country to another. I have to find the route on Autoroute, find the border crossing, then look for it on TomTom's map & set it as destination. Then open the other country and do the same to set as Departure! As I need to travel through up 4 countries a day, this gets to be a bit of a chore!
2. You can't plan route via somewhere, I want to use a particular stop-off but no way to do it unless you plan it in several parts.
3. Change to map view & it doesn't centre on your position! Duh?
4. Downloading maps off the 8 CD's (YES! 8!) is a total nightmare! Choose a disk, (they are not marked! Except disk #1-8 ) then say downlöad map of....Italy, remove disc and Quit insert Disk 5, insert disc 5 & choose Italy, do you want a 32, 64 or full map?, quess what? remove disc & quit. replace with disc 6. Then it asks every time what is the format, then it asks every time where you want to store it. It never remembers it as default!
5. Remove a map & you lose all your favourites
6. Try to find out how to get any accessories extension antenna, fixing magnets etc. on the web site and you'll find 'Jack****'
7. There is no way to see the street names in navigation view.
8. There are only very basic descriptions of signs in navigation view
(take direction -----)
9. At a lot of very obvious junctions on motorways it says keep left etc. then you come to a complicated junction in town & it says turn right when it should say bear left then turn right. Or worse still it says nothing at all!
10. The usual 'turn left in 200 metres' comes in on a straight stretch of motorway, or 'Turn around when possible' on a dead straight route.
These are a few of the negatives that I can remember. got to go now as I'm losing my connection. There's more..........
So does anyone know of an objective comparison between the various Navigation systems? TomTom, Kane etc.
Thanks guys! 600 Quid poorer & still having to use MS Autoroute along side TomTom! Grrrrrr!
Not exactly side by side comparison (well except for the Tomtom/Navman compare) but it has a few reviews of some others...

GPS not good yet
The same in here, I being trying to buy a GPS for ages but I keep hearing bad things all the time
just hope that GPS get develop properly ASAP please

Olivier, Thanks for the info. but looking @ the details it seems the new version is still on 8 CD's! I think these TomTom people are spending too much of their time in the 'coffee shops'!
I'm also a bit miffed that even though the new version is on sale, we, the owners of version 2 won't even get the link to allow us to pay for the upgrade until mid April. On the earlier TomTom route-planner it had a facility to add an overlay, on which you would store all of your favourites, & extra info in a seperate file. The new versions seem to lose saved data every time you remove the sd card to change to another! Grrrrrr!
I have done some checking, too and would decide for Mobile Navigator 4 which will be available towards end of April.
Will us BT, you can use your fingers to navigate, voice, across all of western Europe, etc.
I have just purchased CoPolit in Australia - it ROCKS!
Hi,
I bought this product after checking out this site:
http://www.pocketpcmag.com/awards/category.asp?catid=43
CoPolite works a treat and is very accurate, intelligent and quick. You can do stuff like route planning, pull in addresses from outlook contacts, store an address in contacts when your actually at a location, find points of interest (like hotels, food, recreation etc, etc) ... and the list goes on.
Only down side - my Radio Stack is corrupt **every time** I use this software  ! Nothing that a hard reboot doesn't sort out  !!
(That's how I came to be apon this site.. I am trying to figure this out. )
Saw your post and thought I could add 2 cents (or pence)
Rgds,
Scott
Can you explain what you mean by " my radio stack is corrupt every time", how does this corruption manifest itself on screen, a corrupt radio stack would not be fixed by any number of hard or soft reboots. Which com port is the hardware/software. What message appears to let you know of this corruption etc. How have you managed to sort it out and use the naviagtion?

weather

i used to use spb weather and had a few places set up nicely but i cant seem to get it working since i flashed to wm6 and trying to reinstall it. im trying pocket weather too but to get my town showing up I'm really struggling. I live in Milford Haven in West Wales. I had verkhoyansk and death vally set up too for the greatest temperature differences and it took me ages to set up finding the right sources and town codes but I really cant remember how it is done. I can't load the tsk file I backed up.
How do i get weather set up and what is the best one to use?

I too had been using SPB Weather, but I was completely dissatisfied with the way it handles (or I should say, DOESN'T handle) current conditions. The latest three days seem to be nothing more than what the forecast was from three days ago.
I recently have been toying with SBSH Pocket Weather, and I feel it's a somewhat better product, offering a myriad of detail that is lost with SPB. I like the map abilities, relative humidity, barometric pressures, sunrise/sunset/zenith (handy for photography), and a lot of it's other features.
But it too, lacks in certain areas, and it's a beast to set up.
I'm in the USA, and although I can't configure my actual zipcode easily, I CAN use the national stations that surround my town, and it's forecasts and current conditions seem to work flawlessly.
FWIW, though, both products work fine, for what each one is capable of, running on WM6.
SBSH has a great forum...though it's pretty quiet right now. All the same, you can probably get all the help you need from that source, more than what you might find here.
-pvs
thanks alot. the hardest thing was finding my town it was easier finding some obscure place in russia than my town in Wales! and finding the data source files from each weather site I still don't know how i did it at the time. i will look into SBSH thank you.
i prefer sbsh it allows proxy internet connections which works better with my corp connection not to mention it has more weather detail.

Bing updated search

So I wanted to get feedback from everyone...since wp8's Bing search was updated they got rid of the local tab and shopping tab condensing search results into web, images, and video....i used to use the search setting on the local tab to get local phone numbers and address which I could easily click and open Nokia maps or drive...with the new update the local search results are supposed to show up in the web search tab...ie. I want to go to McDonalds I search mcdonalds and the web tab should have nearby address and phone numbers...but I am not being able to use the search function like this....my question is does anyone know how to search to get local results
Update- Thank you for community responses. I ended up changing the browser/search language to UK English bringing back the local tab. With further research I noticed that Microsoft is starting with the US for the new condensed tabs with WP8 Bing Search. In the future, MS will have all regions using the updated WP8 search having the same three tabs Web, images, and video. Personally I think this is stupid unless they can get local results to show up as they originally did. I suspect they are trying to avoid litigation from Apple since Apple sued Google for local search issues...just speculation though.
Update 2- I have turned back to the new updated tabs since MS has finally integrated Local results in the web tab. Actually it works pretty great with less steps and swipe to get you where you are going or to reach who you need to call.
I updated to amber. Still got local and shopping in bing search

I've loaded the Amber ATT Dev ROM, and all of the new Nokia App Amber updates and I still have Web, Local, Media Shopping. I know Bing is very Region dependent, check to make sure Phone language, Country, and Regional Format are all correct. In the Amber update there is, which I'm pretty sure is a new option, labeled "Browser & Seach Langue" that you may need to update.

yeaap you're correct only "Browser & Seach Langue" matters for Bing Search
Still old search on my Lumia 920 as well.

[Q] How can I reach exact coordinates on new Maps?

The old maps had a feature that if we searched coordinates on Google Maps app, we were taken to nearest street, but if we searched in format: [email protected],67.058318 we were taken to the exact pinpoint with a title Somelocation. Here Somelocation may be any text of our choice. Now this feature seems to be disappeared, and now when I search this coordinate, I am given a point on a nearest street, and by nearest, I mean something like 400 meters away! Yes, in a heavily populated area where one foot might change addresses, I am thrown this far. In Website, I can see both points, i.e exact location (green) and nearest (according to them) in red color. See following link for example:
https://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&so...,67.058315&spn=0.009589,0.021136&z=16&iwloc=A
So, is there a new method or trick which may enable me to search exact location on my mobile?

Google map location

Hello friends,
A small glitch I found on my reno 10x, (pcm00) google map doesn't know my location and no matter what permission i gave to google map, it still does not auto locate and update my location.
When i was using nokia 7 plus (which i also bought in china), google map worked fine and were able to auto locate my location, as long I am using a vpn.
Normally this is not an issue since other local Chinese map apps work perfect, but i am travelling to Germany soon, so this gets me worry a bit.
I have not had a chance to try google map outside of China yet, and am wondering if this situation will remained even if im not in China.
Anyone else have this phone that is currently in a place with firewall-free internet access and can give me any conformation? Thanks, really appreciate it.

I'm using the same phone in the US. No vpn on AT&T. I don't have a problem with Google maps except that I can't turn on location history for timeline. Otherwise location works fine. I've used Google maps dozen of times for directions and no problems locating me.
