[Q] Country/Carrier? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an unlocked GS2, is there an easy way to tell what country and carrier is from? Thanks in advance.

If it still has the FW it was shipped with, you could tell by that.
Look for the FW version (like XXKE2 for example) and the salescode/CSC that is currently installed (*#272*<your-phones-IMEI># - VIA for example).
Then look in the FW download threads in the dev section, with some some luck you find a FW with the same combination, usually there's also info from where it is.
(XXKE2 and VIA from the above examples would be German MultiCSC, o2 (VIA = ViagInterkom = o2) to be more precise - it's what I had).
Worth a shot.

Why am I World Generic?

I have a UK supplied and UK used phone, updated normally through all progressions as a regular user (as opposed to someone who knows what they are doing) in the UK using SEUS.
My phone now shows as World Generic. it was UK Generic before THE 2.1 update. It also tells me that the software is up to date despite this new little update that has been around (in UK apparently) since before Christmas.
Help. I'm confused.
It does not take a lot.
I want this latest upgrade to see if the incall volume can be increased as it is currently pants.
PS. Aviation medicals over many years suggest I have no hearing impairment, as does the use of SE W980 and SE K800i.
SE themselves seem to suggest there is no problem with the volume of my X10 PDA - can't bring myself to refer to it as a phone...........................

It's normal, it's just the way it is. Go to Settings - About phone and tell us what Build Number you're using?
2.0.A.0.504
Well the latest is 2.0.2.A.0.24, so if you don't want to root just use seus which should update you to it, if you want to root it then you need to install THIS, because the current root methods don't work with the update you'll get using seus.

[Q] Latest Firmware for Orange UK Mozart

Hi, so I recently updated via the send cab program, the 2250.21.51101.401 update from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1429339
However because it is .401 it is generic HTC Europe.
Is there an equivalent Orange UK one, or know what the latest Orange UK one is?
The .061 release.
Coz I am missing the Orange Apps from the marketplace. and would like to have them back. Thanks!
The latest I could fine is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1281195
2250.21.40600.061
Would prefer something that has Internet Sharing enabled

Hi jamieostrich
Unfortunately Orange UK have blocked Internet Sharing so you won't be able to get that on stock Orange UK firmware.
The latest Orange UK firmware that I have seen downloadable is this one: http://www.filefactory.com/file/c09..._1.30.061.01_5.54.09.21_22.33b.50_RELEASE.exe
There are two options to get this functionality. Firstly, developer unlock your device and then interop unlock it (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1271963).
Then install this software: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1271264 I had a little trouble with the driver because the Hardware ID for the Orange UK branded Mozart is different to the normal HTC branded software. The work around is to examine the Hardware ID in Device Manager and then manually edit the driver .ini file accordingly. There are guides linked in the app thread.
The second option for you is to debrand your device which you can do as per here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002391 However, by doing that you will not get the Orange marketplace and Orange Maps, which is the deal breaker for me.
Cheers

Hiya, sorry but I dont know where you get the idea that you cannot get the Orange Apps. I have ran both the unbranded Rom and i am currently using a custom rom and all i need to do is downlaod the apps manually. i.e. Orange maps and orange wednesday. Just search for one of them then in the description look for the part that says more from orange and click that, That will then take you to all that orange do. even the ones they did give away free. However I have noticed that I can no longer get all of the free stuff they had on offer any more. but not sure if thats because they have removed them or not. But I haven't used a stock rom for months. Hope this helps.

[Q] Will I still get Zune updates after downgrade to stock ROM?

This may be a stupid question, but I just can't find a straight answer anywhere, so hope you can help.
My problem is I bought an HTC radar C110ein JP hoping it'd get extensive language support like my IS12T, only to find out it was a HongKong unit with just English and Chinese display languages.
The issue is this was supposed to be a present for someone that can only speak Spanish.
I was suggested in another thread to load a stock ROM for Europe, but none match my current phone version (so it'd be a downgrade):
- Firmware: 1600.2200.20301.708
- RadioSofware: 16.23.03.17_16.27.00.23
- Bootloader: 2.3.160015.3(134621)
My questions are therefore:
- If I get one of these European stock ROMs, will I get also the language packs delivered by default in the European region (which include the one I want, Spanish)?
- Will my phone be updatable through the regular Zune channel afterwards?
- Should I rather get the newest, oldest, or it doesn't matter? (assuming I'll get the updates normally)

Could you please explain me how did you get that to work…
As I wrote elsewhere (link), I tried to transfer my phone with the European RUU/ROM, but unfortunately I get an error:
- "ERROR [294] : INVALID VENDER ID"
Seems that it's not that easy to load a ROM from a different region even if the phone is unbranded... Any ideas as to how to get it done???
repeat .. it was a trophy ...
approximately as described in the post.

Unlocking and unbranding a Sgs3 on the 3 network UK

Is this easy enough to do. Got the chance of buying one at £400 but would need to unlock it and preferably have it unbranded.
Is the unlocking part something I could do myself or would I need to take it to a vendor and how much would it cost?
Thanks.
The 3 phones are unlocked already
It costs £10 on ebay for an unlock code
Easy enough to un brand by flashing a stock firmware .
But i would wait until i had a copy of my original firmware first in case of claiming on 3 warranty .

Mine is on Three and unlocked/unbranded (although I did get it via Carphone Warehouse) so your mileage may vary.
R.
I had a 3 UK phone, I got it since the launch, as I had it pre-ordered, and it arrived locked, however I used the Voodoo SGS III Unlock Tool and it worked brilliantly, it is free to download and it unlocks it almost instantly, however ROOT is required.
For the information of anyone reading this thread, in branding is as simple as flashing a generic official rom from your country via Odin, takes 5 minutes.
Unlocking is done via the methods shown here in the forum and is free, again, takes 5 to 10 minutes.
To undo the changes, flash back to the carrier ROM you had originally, and I wouldn't worry about undoing the unlock.

Use supercurio's galaxy s3 unlock tool from market, its free
Could anybody with a more in-depth knowledge care to offer a bit more info on this?
I currently have an O2 branded S3.
I have rooted this (when I first got it) and that went fine (Odin, I think was the method I used).
If I wanted to flash a basic unbranded image on this, would I use the very first post from this thread, labelled "I9300XXBLFB"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610 (If not, could somebody point me towards the correct file please?)
Then, If I ever needed to put an O2 image back onto it, (maybe for warranty purposes) could somebody point out where I would find the O2 branded one, as I can only see an Orange branded one in the following post?
Also, is there actually much risk involved in the flashing, or would I be really unlucky for anything to go wrong?
(P.S. I've seen the thread about how to change the handset back to make it seem that it's never been flashed/modified, so I realise I'd need to do more than just flash the O2 image back onto it. Hopefully, I'd never need to anyway).

1st of all dial *#1234# into the dialer this will give you the current firmware version(im assuming your still on o2 firmware and havent changed it yet) then go to here
http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9300&r=1#regiona
this is s3 firmware version for europe and find the firmware that matches the 02 version your on. This is your fallback incase you need to warranty repair the phone or you maybe have a flash problem with unbranded at least you have the o2 to fallback on.
Ill assume its more than likely this one
http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=8&view=4650
and heres the dl link for it
http://www.hotfile.com/dl/157417303/f25aa83/I9300XXALE8_I9300O2UALE5_O2U.zip.html
Then as youve already mentioned flash the LFB version, here ya go dl link
http://www.hotfile.com/dl/162402398/abc9bdb/I9300XXBLFB_I9300OXABLFB_BTU.zip.html
Now if you want any other versions of official firmware you will need to join sammobile to be able to dl them
Thanks very much for the reply.
A couple of issues having taken a look at those links.
The first link doesn't seem to have my firmware listed - some are close, but none the same.
Mine shows: AP: I9300XXALEF, CP: I9300BWLE6, CSC: I9300O2UIALE7
Would an alternative work if I ever needed to flash back? (maybe the one you've linked in the 2nd link?
And, finally, to confirm - the last link - "LFB" (not sure what that means) - is that the unbranded rom that I'd be looking for?
Many thanks for the advice.

Have your tried updating through kies 1st? As far as im aware you will still get o2 updates through it. I noticed my phone out the box(unbranded) didnt have firmware matching this list either but after a kies update I was on firmware more well known for the region and was on the list.
Yes the LFB is the latest unbranded firmware.
edit:- doing a bit of research it seems o2 branded phones are running the LE8/LE5/LE5 software so i think your missing an official update.
I've not really used Kies as yet. I'm running Mountain Lion on my iMac, & Kies won't install on that.
I can always use my lappy at work tomorrow to look into it.
If I was going to change to the unbranded firmware, I assume there's not really any point in using Kies to update the official O2 version on here at the moment?

Oh, ok, fair enough. I'll give it a whirl tomorrow.
Is there much risk involved in flashing, or not much?

not really but nothings 100% guaranteed, so its always good to have backup plans in place just in case.
Not sure what backup plan I could have in place for me bricking the phone
Thanks for all your help. I'll look into it more tomorrow
Kies is, as you say available for Mac, but won't yet run on Mountain Lion. I'm assuming they'll update it soon.
You were right, Kies did update my O2 branded handset to the latest FW, which does show on SamMobile's site.
Phones from the three network are locked, carphone warehouse phones are unlocked as they're from the suplier.
Theres a tool called voodoo i beleive it's used for unlocking the sim on samsung phones, you should give that a whirl.
It's available on the market.

Root your phone and nand back up your rom.
Keep the back up on your computer.
Flash whatever you want and use the nand back up to restore if you need to.
Remove root and reset counter using triangle away if you ever need to send it back.

What do those letters refer to when talking about ROMS etc

I am looking to flash a ROM to my SGS3 but have to start again as a noob.
I have used mskips tool to root the phone ( i think ) In the tools menus it gives an option to download a stock ROM from samsung-roms i think and it gives some different versions that end in:
XXALE8
XXALEF etc, etc
What do these refer to and how do i find what is suitable for me/most up to date.
My carrier is T-Mob UK and the letters from my Device Info page is BVALE4...not sure it is the same thing yet but im guessing so. I am first looking to try a stock/rooted ROM and then i will probably move up to custom stuf once my knowledge grows a little...along with my confidence. Any pointers welcome.
Best Regards
