Does Kies store downloaded Firmware on HDD? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, does Kies store downloaded firmware on hard diisk or can i put a firmware somewhere on the hdd so that kies can detect it.. Disconnects at some point while downloading firmware and hv to restart download..

does Kies store downloaded firmware on hard disk
Yes in TEMP folder for about 30 seconds before it starts to install .
can i put a firmware somewhere on the hdd so that kies can detect it
Worth a try from memory its either the temp folder on root of C drive or a new TEMP folder on C drive ..
Really clever users use Odin to flash stock firmware .
Also check the Check Fus thread and original carrier branded post in dev section.

Kies nowadays pre-downloads your firmware, and stores it there... so it definitely stays longer than 30 secs, no hurry there mate ;-)

You actually checked that as last time i checked Kies downloads yes to temp folder file can be copied . Once update starts file has gone .
Possible later Kies holds the download longer .
Big advantage if it does stay long enough to copy but in the past if you have not grabbed before update starts its gone .

What KIES does nowadays: it checks for updates for your phone, even when it is not connected; When it finds an update, it will download it, and give you a pop-up stating there's new firmware for your phone...
Most likely the firmware still gets deleted after updating, but then again: who needs the firmware after a succeeded update ;-) I can't test this for my self, since I'm a custom-rom user...
ps) it might be that I've checked some box somewhere in the past, enabling KIES to do this...

Thats good likewise i cannot use Kies .

Just out of curiosity, I decided to check where does Kies store the Firmware in Windows XP. So, here's the path:
C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Temp\Binary\GT-I9100
A side question. The firmware file stays there with no extension. Even if I try to rename it to .tar or .zip it cannot be opened. Is there some simple way to "extract" the firmware file from its storage place?

I cannot find the .....binary directory

I cannot find the directory noted in the quote above. I have a folder named: C:\Users\YOUR NAME\AppData\Local\Temp\KiesLiveupdateTemp
In it is only a file named PlugInHost.XML which contains the following text:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
- <PluginHost>
- <Hdr>
<Status>300</Status>
</Hdr>
- <Req>
<Region>US</Region>
<SDKVersion>2.3.2.12064_10</SDKVersion>
<Mode>A</Mode>
</Req>
- <Resp>
<Region />
<SDKVersion />
<Url />
<ByForce />
<Desc />
</Resp>
</PluginHost>
So where is the file that contains the upgrade to ICS?

Same here. I am on window 8. All I have is pluginHost.xml under the kiesliveupdatetemp folder. I just updated by GT-8013 via Kies. Could not locate the actual firmware files.

Actually i find the downloaded file here:
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp\tmp9A2D.tmp.zipfolder\I9505XXUAME2_I9505OXXAMDB_I9505XXUAME2_HOME.tar.md5
And pretty sure this is the right file, you can open it using 7-zip and see the files inside like boot.img etc....

That's nice and all but why go through all this hassle? Flashing that file(which you can manually download faster than through the Kies downloader) through Odin gets it done faster and better, and it wouldn't even void warranty.

May be my reply is too late.
I found an answer somewhere in XDA forum and tried it.
I found tmp file in C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp\
it is like tmp9A2D.tmp ( ranging file size from 200 MB to 900 MB depend on HP and FW type)
it is unpacked into a zip folder with exactly same name as tmp file in same location during update.
when hp is connected to PC in "download mode" Kies unpack tmp file and transfer to HP and upgrade it.
I did manage to copy zip folder before if finish upgrading process.
keep an eye on status windows, let it finish unpacking, copy zip folder once it start transferring it to UP , it show green arrow directing from PC to HP showing percentage of work done.
folder is deleted automatically once upgrade process finish
Good luck

YOU are right, it is the one. Only thing is that is is availabe for a few minutes only while Kies is transferring those files and upgrade HP. the whole folder is deleted after that.
you can copy that folder and save somewhere in HDD for future use.

I know this is an old post, but where can you download a firmware manually faster than Kies can? Kies downloads it in minutes . Sammobile, for free accounts, takes hours.

There is no other way to download firmware manually faster than kies unless someone uploads the files onto a different mirror.

So, some of you gave some paths where the ROM downloaded by Kies can be found. But does somebody know the format of this file?
Then, If I can locate and copy this file, can I use it in order to upgrade my smartphone without re-download it?
I mean, I have several device I would like to upgrade and I don't want to download the upgrade for all of them, as they are exactly the same device. I know I could do it via Odin but for personnal reason, I don't want to use Odin.
Thanks

BEST way to accomplish your goal is thru Odin, dude, Kies is mostly the "end-user" photo-mp3 transfer software. AFAIK there is NO way to transfer the firmware from one Kies instance to another, it gets stored in a randomly named .tmp folder and is deleted after use. IDK about original file format, I grabbed a copy of mine after Kies extracted what it DL'ed and it was in .tar format.

Decrypting Roms

Hi All,
I seem to remember there being a guide to decrypting roms for the x10.
I've saved a backup of my oz optus firmware from pc companion and was hoping to make an unecrypted version of it to be used with flashtool.
I've tried searching and I simply cannot find the guide to unencrypt (That's if memory serves me correctly and it even exists.)
Could someone please point me in the right direction.
Cheers

This link might should be what your looking for - title has changed a few times
Does anyone know how to do it tho? I downloaded the "tool to partially decrypt" but it doesn't show any instructions or anything.. Just a bunch of files..
That tool won't decrypt the ROM. I will decrypt it soon (read: when I get access to my external HDD).
With that said lollylost, Do you need me to upload the two files somewhere?
Main reason I wanted to decrypt it was to extract the optus my account apk as its not available on either the market or the optus.com.au website.
And yeah i'd allready downloaded the decompression tools. Lollylost, have you got some sort of application or even a guide on how to decrypt the firmwares?
Would be nice if you could upload the firmware since all my firmwares are on the inaccessible HDD.

Reflashing has been covered before but since I had trouble with it I feel for you so i'll post my lil guide
Hopefully its allowable to link to file on other sites (If not can a mod feel free to edit this post and I'll create a pdf guide if thats okay).
EDIT: Turns out as a new user I can't link to external sites and services. With that in mind if you do a google search for "download SEUS" and scroll down till you see the sony ericcson site, you should be okay.
Step 1
Download SEUS if you dont allready have it (NOT pcCompanion that a different program)
Step 2
Using SEUS, run your phone through a repair. That means let SEUS download firmware and install it to your phone.
Step3
When using SEUS the db folder will be in C:\Program Files\Sony Ericsson\Update Service\db\YOURIMEINUMBERGOESHERE\blob_fs
Find the two largest files in that folder select it so its highlighted & press F2 on the keyboard to rename the file. The filename will now be highlighted. Press <Ctrl> + <C> to copy the file name to your clipboard, press <ESC> to cancel the rename.
Now that you have copied the Filename to your clipboard, locate where you saved your original firmware files and highlight the largest one. Press <F2> again and this time press <Ctrl> + <V> . This will paste the new filename onto your firmware.
Do the same for the second largest file.
Step 4
With the file rename complete, you can now copy the two files you just rename into your C:\Program Files\Sony Ericsson\Update Service\db\YOURIMEINUMBERGOESHERE\blob_fs folder.
Step 5
Run through the repair again with SEUS however this time when SEUS says its downloading it will take a matter of seconds and then flash your original firmware back onto your phone.
Step 6
ALL DONE Enjoy your original firmware.
Lollylost: I tried to upload files and it crapped out about 50% of the way through.
I did notice that there was once an SEUS plugin that you had uploaded to hotfile that did the decrypt on the fly, is it still possible to get this plugin so i can finally extract the my account.apk and get on with rooting my phone?
Cheers

[Q] I hope I'm not being a bother

I'm a noob but i can usally grasp technology pretty easy . I'm trying to flash my phone but when i try to choose the file from the firmware (yes its in there i checked) its not there at first i just chose the folder flowed the instructions to see if it worked anyway but it didnt work. i tried both flash tool FlashTool version 0.2.9.1 and FlashTool version 0.2.8 but none worked (they were both the same i think) im using vista if that helps. Help please
First things first you're using Vista... Thats always a problem LOL... sorry =)
No, it shouldn't be...
You should just be able to select the folder that the file is placed in and it should come up on Flash Tool...
Let me ask... in the folder is it one file or a group of files??
i just put the rar file in there and unpacked it there

What files did you get out of the extracted RAR?
MD5,X10a_1.0_2_1_A_0_435 one text one ftf
Have you put all files in the firmwares folder of x10flashtool?
yeah i have
So you can see the files when you press FLASH in flashtool, and then select the file you want to flash? Where does it fail? Explain better.
i click on flash the i click on the 3 little dots to choose a folder it says the folder is empty. I can only see the file it i go in my download where i have my flash tool folder
That shouldnt be necessary, if you have the tft file in the firmwares folder it should come up directly when you click flash. Dont know what could be wrong! :s You have extracted flashtool right? And the firmware files..
yeah......
also i dont know if this will help but the only click-able buttons are flash donate and save log. The others are just there

Did you download the entire package ? it may happen if the download got interrupted mid way ......... in that case you'd have a zip file of a lesser size which can't be opened ....... try extracting the zip if you get an error you've got to redownload the package....
also ensure that the package is not read only (just incase)

ok... package is not read-only... it's -rw... so it's good....
how do i check the md5 checksum in multiupload?
i m downloading the latest version now... hope it wont get disconnected...
Find an app like MD5Summer (Windoze) to check the MD5 sum once you've downloaded the package.
Also, you can use pretty much any archive program (7Zip, IZArc, WinRar) to test the archive once you've finished downloading it.
If it comes up with fail for *any* file, don't flash that package/download it again. You might have to try downloading it from a different PC/internet connection like I did a while back when I was having probs downloading roms from home without them being corrupt.

yes i know... what i meant was,... is there like a website that tells me the md5 cs in multiupload, so i can compare to the one that i had just finished downloading...
anyway.... thanks to the above poster.. i deleted it from my phone and then transferred the file again... and now it works.... weird,... i transferred first to my microsd, then to phone... i guess that method doesnt work... better to transfer it directly to phone...
thanks y'all!!! been a great help... very nice community here
The MD5 checksum is usually listed next to the link where you download the archive wherever you're downloading it from. Honestly, it's not that important. The most important thing is you get the entire file. And if you "test" the archive in 7Zip/IZArc/WinRar & it comes up all files OK you should be fine.
I've never had a problem flashing a rom/kernel where the test in IZArc has indicated all files contained within are OK/the archive isn't corrupt.

Why not download the stock rom from here ? I wouldn't know about files from Samfirmware as I've never downloaded anything from there.
If you want to go back to stock, download the rom from Intratech's thread, flash it in Odin, done. Again, test the archive integrity in IZarc or similar to make sure it's OK (given you seemed to have had some problems downloading an archive that wasn't whole or corrupted).

Backup odin flashable firmware through Kies

So today i was updating my S3 to 4.1.2 update and in the process i thought of checking where it downloads the firmware. It downloads in the c:\users\[user]\appdata\local\temp
here it downloads as a file with .tmp extension. Keep pressing F5 and the file whose size is changing is that firmware file. Then after download it extracts the file to a zipfolder. Inside there's a md5 file which is around 1.24gb for me. This is the odin flashable file and you must back it up before the Kies is able to complete the updation process as after it has completed it will delete the file. The main aim of this is because as i dont have a hotfile premium account i cant download from sammobile as the file always stops in between. With this method you can easily backup your firmware for the next time.

B170 update arrived

So my friend got an update to the huawei XT. He was already at b160. The new update is labeled as b170 which i think it could gain some hope this phone will get nougat sometime (most likely not). The update only has a device security patch. The security is from june 5 which is pretty old but i guess it's better. If someone else received the update post it here
got the notice for update at noon today - but alas, I have mine rooted so it tried to update, and then reset and is back at 160.
and yes, was really hoping beyond hope for some Nougat...
We need someone then to unroot the phone and update to b170 or at least check how to update to b170
See this post and links in it for how we updated before if the phone was already rooted (and for stock phones that can't OTA due to non-AT&T SIM) :

If anyone is able to capture the B170 update and upload it somewhere I'll try and make a TWRP flashable update
My phone doesn't see any updates yet
Could you briefly describe how to do this please? Can it be done from a phone with a locked bootloader or must the bootloader be unlocked?

you would need Root and a Root explorer - file manager
you would go to settings / Software update / download the update
choose to install it later
then with the root explorer search your phone for an update.zip
I'm not sure where it's stored I'm looking for that information now
after you find the update.zip file copy it to your phones storage and upload it to your google drive (or anywhere I can download it from)
if you know the exact location the update.zip is stored you could possibly adb pull the file without having root
Update should be in /cache/fotapkg/update.zip

you would need Root and a Root explorer - file manager
you would go to settings / Software update / download the update
choose to install it later
then with the root explorer search your phone for an update.zip
I'm not sure where it's stored I'm looking for that information now
after you find the update.zip file copy it to your phones storage and upload it to your google drive (or anywhere I can download it from)
if you know the exact location the update.zip is stored you could possibly adb pull the file without having root

iirc, on huawei, it's in a folder on internal storage. shouldn't need root to grab it.

Thanks seems AT&T likes to put them in the path I described though
I'm pretty sure we can edit the updater script to install this from TWRP if someone captures it

working on grabbing it now.
Tried grabbing it - and messed up and got past the waiting part - it tried to update and (of course) failed. I'll give it another shot shortly.

Good deal .. what was the name and path to the update file ?
you could possibly grab it with the TWRP file manager also

When I get it I'll get all that as well.
The ATT update note calls it B160_B170_SMR_100 , I hit continue when I tried to hit "remind me later" - but it redownloaded.
Ghost Commander shows nothing in the /cache - odd - so I don't know where it's actually sticking it. I'm searching for it both under that name above and also as update.zip and anything else I can think of (by date, since it just re-downloaded)
I'll grab and document all the info on what I got where.
File is in /cache/fotapkg/ but is named package_temp.zip
I have it out, xda won't accept the file that large, trying to figure out how to link that file only to my onedrive so you can get it without access to all my other junk (sorry)

https://1drv.ms/u/s!AkvKyEBneZGLjuQ44wo1pwjtdbgOCA
OneDrive link to file package_temp.zip should be 102 mb in size.
Got it using Total Commander. It seems to be better at grabbing root files than Ghost was.
Also, one other note - I modified the permissions from root root to everyone so that may need to get changed back (or not - you tell me) to be able to get it to move.

ok my phone doesn't see the file as an update ..where was it located ?
that is the file sent down from ATT to the phone. I have unzipped it and looked at it as well -it's 209MB unzipped. Contains the following files and drawers:
cust.new
cust.patch
cust.transfer
system.new
system.patch
system.transfer
UPDATE.APP
(drawer) META-INF
(drawer) com
(drawer) android
otacert
(drawer) google
(drawer) android
update-binary
update-script
blacklist.conf
CERT.RSA
CERT.SF
MANIFEST.MF
If you can't get the .zip to open, let me know and I'll stick it on one drive unzipped.

Well I'm sorry to report so far I have had no luck installing this thing
I have tried the dload/update.app using the dialer method and the update flashes but you have no wifi afterwords
and the phone still shows you on B160 (cust not updated / system files not patched)
I also tried with Flashify and Stock recovery and used an edited updater script in TWRP and all fail for one reason or another
Sooo the only way we will get this is if someone that has done the update
uses TWRP and creates a system.img and cust.img and uploads it somewhere for me
So I can build the B170_Full_Update.zip
Any idea how the phone installs this OTA zip file?
Is the updater-script failing because of assert statements for cust and system?
Have you had success patching cust and system using the OTA updater-script/OTA zips for the Huawei Ascend XT before? How did you end up getting the cust and system for your B160 Update zip? Probably from a TWRP of someone's updated B160, which is what we need to do for B170 now, I'm guessing?
Thanks for your efforts on this and answering my questions.
