hi... this post is for those who wants to root the mytouch quickly and easily without even using a computer. these directions will be step by step, because i know how frustrating it is when someone gives a broken step expecting you to fill in the blanks.
note
im not responsible for what happens to your phone. i am simply showing you hope when all else fails. now lets get started.
ALL CREDIT GOES TO CLOCKWORK FOR HIS UNBELIEVABLE CONTRIBUTION TO THE ANDROID COMMUNITY. THANK YOU
first things first, you need a mytouch slide, your phone charging, rom manager free from the android market, universal androot which i will post the link below, and finally a custom rom from xda developers. pick anyone you like preferably cyanogen mod.
step 1. take the custom rom you downloaded from either your pc or from your phone: pc-> if you downloaded it off your pc, then you need to connect your phone to your pc and put the custom rom file on the root of your sd. you dont have to rename it, just leave as is. phone-> if you downloaded it off your phone, then i hope you heard of astro file manager from the market?! you need that to explore your sd card from your phone and find the custom rom on your downloads folder, and edit, move, to the root of your sd card. then paste.
step 2. now you need to get the universal androot apk from the link below. once you download it, make sure you put it anywhere on your phones sd card. once it's there, use astro once more to find that apk on your sd card and install it by clicking on it.
step 3 now all you need is rom manager free from the android market. i hope that you know how to find and install it.
now that you are all situated, the real part begins, and i will also explain why we are doing it this way along the process okay.
step 4 open up the universal androot apk on your phone and it should look pretty simple. the only thing you do here is make sure that root temporary(unroot after reboot) is checked. then hit root . you should get a sucess and the superuser apk showing up in your app drawer. if yes then proceed to step 5.
step 5 now that you have temporary root, this will give you permission to use root apks until reboot. luckily i found out that rom manager has the ability to flash clockwork recovery while your phone is still on. well this is what your going to do. open up rom manager, and the very top option is "flash Clockwork Recovery" hit this and it should install it. after that click on "install rom from sd card." find your custom rom that you put on here from before, and click on it, then check both boxes: backup existing rom, and wipe data and cache, and hit ok. now hit ok to go into recovery. if you get a superuser request at this point then congratulations, its working. allow it , and proceed to step 6 .
step 6 now your phone is restarting and should back up the system and start installing the custom rom. if for some reason it doesnt install right there, and takes you to clockwork recovery(blue words), then go to step 7. if not then step 8
step 7 if you are in clockwork recovery and dont know what the heck youre at, well in short, your at a screen where your allowed to install any rom meant for the mytouch slide including the 2.2 froyo. yay! navigation is simple if you know how. volume buttons are for navigation up and down, and the camera button on the right bottom is for selecting, while the power button at the top of the phone is to go back one. got it ? all you want to do is intall your custom rom if you havent yet. you might first want to do the wipe data/ factory reset, to make sure everything goes smoothly on your new rom. after that go back to the screen with all the options, and go to install zip for sdcard. then it is important to choose zip from sdcard, as i have no idea what the apply sdcard:update.zip will do to your phone. after you click choose update, you should be in a familiar area: your sdcard. find your custom rom and install it. it will work if its a complete and compatible rom for your phone. once done hit reboot system now and presto step 8.
step 8 ur done lol. enjoy your new rom. misc. if you ever want to go back into clockwork recovery, then go into your normal recovery by power + volume down while your phone is turned off. then hit recovery option. youll notice that you are at the normal recovery. push power+volume up for new set of options. theres an option call apply zip update. click on the and boom, you should pop up in clockwork recovery.
universal androot since i am a new user, i cannot post links but here is an attachment, and if your not signed in then you will find the program by going to 4shared.com and searching for UniversalAndroot-1.6.2-beta.apk uploaded by chrisjcj27. thanks and good luck

Followed your steps completely. After i get root and flash CW Recovery, I go to install the custom rom and make a Nandroid backup.........it restarts phone and take me to the phone with a question mark (i think thats what it was) and then reboots normally into the stock rom. It says its failing to installl the update package which im assuming is CW Recovery.

try repeating the steps again. and make sure that everything goes right along the way. the slightest error will make this a no go.
ill go back and re check everything. this worked for me 3 times over. gimme a sec. ill make this work. sorry for the inconvenience oh by the way. can anyone confirm that they have tried this on a mytouch that hasnt recieved the new ota update. this is the only phone i have tested it on. im not sure if it has anything to do with it.
Tried it about 6 times now. Even downloaded terminal to ensure i have root before carrying on. Its not letting the update.zip that Rom Manager installs on the SD card run at all. Its saying its not signed and then it fails?
Androot is only able to give us a temporary root, therefore the bootloader is still locked and it will not allow us to actually get into CW at all. Correct?

correct. its only root until you reboot. its only to hopefully get clockwork installed on your device.

Not sound rude, but who doesn't have that update by now? So you're saying that we would need to revert from the current update then this should work?

This will not work. You're missing the ENG bootloader.

Read through the working root method here.
This method was developed by ChiefzReloaded, a dev we all know and love. He knows his stuff.
The one posted in this thread seems easier, but simply will not work.

Start with the stickies. For roms its all opinion. Most popular seem to be bionix and trigger. I prefer trigger.

Well I would say that you should go back to 2.1 through Odin. And to do that, install Odin v1.7 or whatever, and stock jfd along with the 512 pit(I can post the links later, but until then, Google is your friend). Open up ODIN FIRST.. take out the battery, and hold down the volume rockers. Without letting go, plug into the computer and then put the battery back in. When you see the yellow android digging you are in download mode. Now you should see COM(number) on the top right of ODIN on the computer .
Now choose the PDA (t959xxxjfd.tar) and pit file(512.pit), and hit start. Should take about 2-3 minutes to go back to eclair
After you are booted up, download Z4 root (again, find it on google) and root your phone. It will reboot again, after 2nd boot, download rom manager. Open this app and install clockwork mod recovery for Samsung vibrant. It will ask you for root access after you choose boot into recovery, select "allow". It will boot into regular recovery. And you will use the down volume key to select reinstall packages. This will officially install clockwork mod recovery. You may have to do this twice. The way you know is the recovery menu will be green, and have about 10 options. As opposed to the yellow and blue menu with 4 options.
After this, you are golden. You are rooted and have CWM to install whatever rom you choose. I would recommend bionix v1.3. It is an easy install.

I couldn't find out how to root 2.2 so I just converted. Repeating this process has made it quite easy to do this kind of stuff.
Its good practice! But check and make sure the 512 pit is compatible with the jfd, because I forgot.
But yes I woudl recommend this if you plan to go to any other rom. But if you just want rooted 2.2 then don't do this

Please help, as of yesterday while messing with "Rom Manager" (Version 4301) I clicked "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery". Now I wish to remove it, yet after scowering the internet for answers I get either complex dagerous looking solutions or ones for other phones. Also if this helps any my phone is version 2.1.
I apologize if this under the wrong thread or this question has already been answered. It's just that I'm new to this type of thing and forums...
First go onto ur sd card and remove the clockwork mod folder. Then odin back to stock. Delete the update package if thats how u rooted or unroot using super one click.

Thanks a lot. "Odin" is the key word I needed, just with that one word more then 20 helpful video tutorials on youtube. Again, thanks...
But... Clockwork Recovery is so incredibly awesome and helpful. Why would you only want the ability to use your stock recovery?
Are you returning the phone?
i have a fascinate that ive had for a while. ive managed to root it(took 4ever to find out how) but im rooted with everything else stock. no custom rom kernel or anything(i know im rooted cuz i can use wireless tether with superuser) HOWEVER, ive been reading on this cyanogen mod 7 and would really like to put this on my phone and get rid of touchwiz once and for all, and don't suggest adw it lags my phone down. can somebody plz give me a tutorial on how to download and flash whatever that is. i can't handle the sluggishness of tw anymore. btw i have odin but really don't know what to do with it. oh and sorry if this is already posted but ive searched and don't really feel like going through every thread in existence. please help me!!
Well before I would go and post a tutorial about this we need to address one thing.

You understand that the default launcher in Cyanogenmod7 (CM7) is ADW correct? I just would hate for you to go through the touch n go process of flashing CM7 and end up hating it because of this
Well... you can switch away from ADW. For instance, I switched to the GO launcher, and it ran like a dream.
Alright, here's a n00b guide.
0)Download these files to you SD card: http://www.mediafire.com/?dfjjclddzq6fl5q, http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-gb-20110613-signed.zip
1) Flash this in Odin: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=657960&d=1310959789
2) Boot into recovery by turning off the phone/pulling battery and holding volume up, volume down and power at the same time
3) Select wipe cache, then select wipe data
4) Select install zip from sd card or something like that and flash CM7 (The file you downloaded from mediafire above)
5)Once phone finishes installing, hit reboot phone or if your phone is off turn it back on
6) Hold down power button, select reboot, select recovery
7) From here, select install zip from sd card again, and install the gapps from the second link.
8) Reboot, and enjoy. If you don't like adw, install GO launcher from the market

Install this on your computer: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?7946i8tdbe0yv50
Open Odin, remove your phone's battery, hold the "volume down" button on your phone while plugging it into your computer and a little android with a shovel should come up.
On your computer, download the file from step 1. In odin, click the PDA button (NOT THE PHONE BUTTON) and select that downloaded file. Hit start or flash or whatever the button like that says. It will take a while. Once done, you will have cwm, so do step 2.
Once in CWN, use the volume buttons to go up and down and use the power button as the "enter button". Follow the rest of the steps from there.
Also, GAPPS is just the technical name for that second file you downloaded. Install it through CWM exactly as the steps say.

Gapps...is abbreviated for google apps. Ie. Google talk, gmail, google voice, google chrome to phone, ect...this is a zip file package that contains a lot of googles apps that are not pre packaged into the rom
Odin is a software program for pc to push a modified recovery program or complete stock rom files, or patches and some other goodies and this recovery abbreviated cwm(clock work mod ) is the program you use to install custom roms and kernels. All odin file formats will end in .tar while files for flashing via recovery end in .zip

Just to let you know, you should probably read up on some more of the threads in the general and development section after you fix your phone before trying this again. You really need to know what you're doing or you'll break your phone for real next time.

While skafan is right, you probably won't completely bork your device but you can get in deep real quick if you screw up anything major...like flashing a rom not for the fascinate. Go to the link he posted and do it exactly to return to complete stock and then read read read before flashing again, but it is very hard to completely destroy our phones besides physically smashing it. His warning is of just cause....that said..everything I learned(and I'm sure some will agree with me) for the most part is out of necessity..meaning I started tinkering with my phone and learned what I had to as I made mistakes and needed to know how to get out of a boot loop or force closes. There were even a few times where I thought I just turned my fassy into an expensive paper weight! You'll get there and, if nothing else borking builds character!
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
i followed those instructions to the letter, same result, success(0) failed (1)
this sucks
borking does not build character for me
it engenders a sense of helplessless and makes me cry
I have had the X2 for roughly 3 months and am now at the point of wanting more from the phone. I have been attempting to root using gingerbreak, enabled debugging and have attempted root 3 times giving 15 minutes for the program to complete root each time. After each time would fail I would reboot the phone to give a fresh start and verify that I do not have superuser. Each time I am left with Gingerbreak continually stating that it is rooting and running exploit yet it never moves forward.. no reboot.
Ideas?
Second question: Can someone please lay out a clear path to applying a new rom on this phone. I previously used the Eris which while it was a pile it would root and rom in 5 steps all of which were clearly outlined in one Thread. Is there a thread like this that I am just not finding? It as I read through the forum it seems like this has gone rom a 5 step process to a 50 step process involving a home computer and 7 different programs.
Can someone clear this up for me?
If u are on android 2.3.3 u can't use gingerbreak. Gingerbreak only works for x2 on froyo(2.2.2)
U need to use petes one click method for rooting Motorola devices running gingerbread .
I am indeed on 2.3.3 I will give that a shot.
Any idea on the second question?

U will need the system recovery apk that was ported from the ATRIX for now to flash roms. Pretty much just download the zip for rom. Place zip on external sd card.
boot into bootstrap recovery((we have a REAL one on the way from koush but for now the ported world just fine u just NEED to be PLUGGED INTO THE WALL as if u r charging for recovery to come up)
Then go to install zip from sdcard. CHOOSE zip from sdcard. Press yes to install. BE VERY PATIENT. DO NOT UNPLUG PHONE UNTIL ALL DONE AND U CHOOSE REBOOT SYSTEM.
then again be very patient as it will take a while to load the new system while booting. I can sit at the bootanimation for a long time. DO NOT PULL THE BATTERY unless u wanna screw it up.
But before installing any roms first make your nandroid by going to backup/restore ams choosing backup. I always put it on my external sd card. This way if u don't like the rom u can go back to where u were before by choosing restore instead of backup.
And it's usually a great idea to wipe data/cache from recovery before flashing also.
Hope this helps.

I would also recommend looking around the droidforums.net x2 section for some info on flashing. There are a lot of stickies there but I like this site better. More active over here usually.
I don't know what info is in the development forum here but it may be helpful if it has been updated. I never looked at it really. Good luck. Stay informed. Don't.do anything u aren't sure of unless u wanna learn how to sbf(which u should learn anyways just in case...its fairly simple)
Edit: ignore.
