[Q] Rooting "A shot in the dark" - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Have been reading any and all Rooting Posts and I have come to the conclusion that as of now, Most, if not all of the Rooting techniques are a shot in the dark.
If there is one good way that is reliable and doesn't screw up one thing or another than I have not seen it.
Example......Superoneclick....works on one phone but not the next....Roms....need more fixes to get to work than Microsoft.....
Tell me is there a proven way to unlock the bootloader, Root the phone and get Gingerbread to work fully ?
I may be new to this site and believe me I would love to have a open phone....But I have other things to do than F around trying to get a already KickAss phone to work.....Just saying....

you need to do more reading, no one uses superoneclick for the atrix... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1165791

Read the stickies..
Have you ever opened the android dev section?
Almost everything is in the sticky thread of clown.. With faqs guides etc..
Unlock your bootloader depending what atrix you have(att or international), then install the tenfars port of CWM4, and then you can root using the CWM root method..

To build on your Microsoft comment...............Some software is not compatible with all versions of Windows. The Atrix came out with Windows 95, has made it to XP, and with GB will be Windows 7. If you are not happy with the devs work, what they have done for everyone, and can't filter through the threads to get what you want, maybe you should get an iPhone and stick Cydia on it!......Or get a Windows phone because you won't have to "fix" anything on it!
If you want help, then you have started out the wrong way. Your post needs to be objective, and not flaming all the work others have done because you can't implement any of it, and are confused.
Root, ROM's, etc., do not need a bunch of fixes............you just have to READ so you know which ones work together for what you want. If you had actually taken the time, you would know that the bootloader has been unlocked, root is working, and GB is awesome. You just have to check the instructions for what you want on your Atrix, whether it be AT&T, Orange, Bell, etc.
Personally, I am on an AT&T Atrix 4G with unlocked bootloader, rooted, with GB 4.5.91, and have absolutely no complaints ot problems!
Since you don't want to F around, watch that door................it's heavy and swings closed fast.........wouldn't want it to hit you between the buttocks on the way out!

Bell ATRIX, unlocked bootloader, rooted, running 2.3.4. No problems

Easy Root 'n Rom

This is a nub question I know, but I've been reading these forums for a while now that I got my Thunderbolt and I was just curious.. is there an easy 1 click root for Thunderbolt yet? like the universal Androot or somthing? I really want to root mine and put a stable GB rom on it, really liking the look of BAMF, but I'm very hesitant because I really dont' want to brick my phone, done it before and it was a pain in the BLEEP to recover it, course it was a Zio M6000 too LOL... Anyhow is there an easy root out there yet? and are any of the GB BAMF Roms stable enough to use the netflix APK on and not worry about brickign too much? I'm hesitant because I'm not overly wealthy or anything and I dont' want to brick my new phone I just dumped some cash on lol thanks!
New Info (Post mentioned below): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009969 (If you are going to use this, please make sure you understand what all it does: and "When in doubt, know your way out.")
Not that I'm aware of, however the root process documented in the stickies is very easy to follow, given that you have adb working on your computer. None of the GB roms are "stable" as they are all based off of a leaked sense rom, but that being said I've been running Gingeritis with very little problems.
If you really are interested in changing up your stock rom (and I would, the battery life out of the newer kernels by imoseyon is outstanding!) take a few minutes to read up and get ADB working on your machine. Once you are comfortable with that, download the stock RUU floating around here - You would have to screw up pretty badly to brick the phone, just follow the instructions. JCase and crew have done a very nice job with trying to be cautious with every step.
Also, not trying to be a prick but fair warning - posting questions in the dev forum is a no-no unless you are releasing something dev related, you'll likely get some not so nice responses for doing it. Good luck in learning!

There is no one click root, but it doesn't get much easier than captainkirks one click script. The most user action involved is putting the RUU's on the SD Card and hitting "y" for yes.

right about now....
seriously i know we all were noobs at one times but these types of questions get really annoying. seriously its NOT HARD AT ALL. i was really scared at first n when i actually took the time to read up on ADB, i was like duh its seems so damn easy. once i first rooted my Nexus One, it really was easy. the TB is just as easy. really stop taking the easy way. stop being lazy, take an hour out of each day to read up on ADB so u can root when youre ready. u WILL NEED to know about ADB. not everything here in the forums will be handed to u easily. u will need to pull files, edit them and what not. seriously these types of people need to stop being lazy and read up on some ADB. this is coming from a person who is so-so with this type of stuff. seriously, the manual way is NOT HARD AT ALL
and there are a few reports about TB bricking on GB but not so much to be overly scared about. im still playing it the safe way n sticking with BAMF Remix 1.7 for now til its more stable or til we get a lot more info on the brickings of TB on GB
I appreciate the information given here. I know that I'll always have to wade through a bit of criticism and flaming when you're learning and those who have done so I understand your frustration but be patient, not everyone has your understanding as yet of the systems and how they run. The most I have ever done with regards to rooting and roms is to use androot on my zio and install some launchers.. so manually playing with my phone's innards is a little daunting.
I will take your advice Jay and read up on ADB, while I don't like your attitude, I do understand it and thank you and others for the information you offer. I will look into all of these options and thank you all for your input
This is what I used:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005292
I came from the D1 and have a lot of experience with adb and was honestly just lazy when I rooted the TB. When I rooted my D1 there was no easy root and I did everything manually which was a huge help later on in (root) life. I highly suggest that you do it manually at least once. Then later when you're lazy like me you do an easy root.

No one should have to be flamed or critisized for asking questions. The only stupid questions are the ones not asked.
Even experienced to advanced users still ask questions.

Download both files. Rename the first MR1 RUU and put on the SD card. NOT in a folder. Power off/hold volume down and then press the power button. Follow the instructions on the screen. After its done reboot. Then, delete that file off the SD Card. Rename the second one and put where the first one was. Do the same thing again. You will be unrooted with S=on.

Don't let others get you down, I'm far from a NOOB yet still get called it because someone has to answer a question rather than ignore it even though its not a big deal. I rooted mine coming from a D1, I used the method here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996616) it took about 30 mins and it was no big deal at all. I was on GB and then went back to Froyo since I have no problem waiting another month or so for something that would be more stable to come out.
Good luck with whatever way you go. ADB can be a pain in one way or another. There is an ADB for dummies that someone posted one click installs ADB and it works perfect I have been using that. The commands are easy so I wouldn't sweat it too much.
That makes it seem so easy. Be back in a few un rooted . Thanks that was easy just had a brain fart. Put in the simple terms it was easier. Can someone verify all my settings are correct or near stock?

Yea not all of us have to rub that crap in.. thanks for reminding us though.

Lets just do it right and get a unrevoked method for simple [email protected]

I just had a suggestion, we should just make it simple for this fine phone and devs
or someone should develop a simple unrevoked root and unlock method just like the evo uses.
Current methods are rediculous, all though i got it done, its a hassle for others.
We need to get clockwork through rom manager and get this phone goin with some rom development
the hassle of unlocking bootloader is to much!!
Cmon devs make a one click tool!!
oh mercyful lord, please forgive us, for we have forsaken the most sacred rule!
we have so forgotten that in hacking a device we must not only defeat all security measures on said device, we must do more then include instructions for free on how to do it yourself. we must make it so it does it for you.
/sarcasm
seriously dude? you think that this thought hadnt crossed anyones mind? unrevoked does htc, hence why there is no unrevoked for all the locked moto bootloaders. rather then complain about it take a dive, learn some code figure out how things work and try helping.
and in case you didnt pick up on the irony of it all, check teh dev section i have a one click... just need to fix it thats all >_>

Guys, let's not let this forum get away from us. I've been apart of other forums that have been ruined by this same sense of entitlement. This stuff will all happen but you have to be patient. The Photon has only been out a very short time.
Besides, rooting is a very simple procedure with ADB. As Shabby said, the one click is on the way. Ticking off the developers is not the way to get things done faster. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect. Please remember that before posting nonsense like this.

Obviously written by someone who didn't have an Evo on launch day, and doesn't remember that Unrevoked wasn't out until the phone had been out for quite some time. The original root method for the Evo was considerably more difficult than the new Photon method.

By the way you type and spell, maybe you are just too dumb for a method like this. I am a complete noob when it comes to rooting and didn't have a single problem following the instructions. Don't assume that others are as stupid as you are. Most people here are happy with what has been given to us.

Totally agree. He had a suggestion, he did not insult anybody's intellectual property, nor did he directly or indirectly insult any dev for not putting out good work. He simply indicated that current methods are a little involved and that in an ideal environment, we should strive for simplicity. I don't know any dev worth their salt who isn't compelled to debug their code, to improve it, and to learn from their mistakes. Frankly I'm a little surprised at the reaction. Especially the comment about wanting to put the OP "out of his misery." Where I come from, any analogy to terminating somebody's life is incendiary and uncalled for.
no it wasnt a suggestion, it was a call to the devs to hurry up and make things.

again my issue with it is here is a guy who hasnt done anything saying this needs to be done. if someone steps up and says hey i wanna do this or starts to ask question so they can contribute. ive no issues with helping them, but to bold face claim that things need to be done, and on a timely schedule is an issue for me.
why? coming from the epic im sure a lot of users can agree with teh issues that phone had, too many people were run off by people demanding crap.
Guys please ignore these type of threads.... Comming from the epic i would hate for 99% of users to lose great amazing devs because of the demanding 1%
You guys are doing great please ignore the non sense.

Just Got My First Smart Phone Ever: ATRIX 4G, Lots of Questions

Hello there, Since I am somewhat poor and I´m still under my parents wing... I upgrade phones about every 5 years, (well at least until I start working) so i was really outdated with phones but i did my homework and got to the conclusion that Android based phones are the best price x performance/ features.. specifically Motorola brand around the $200 mark so my decision was between the Droid 3, Photon 4g & Atrix 4G.. I decided for the Atrix with the lapdock which i think is the best feature until now!
This it my first smartphone ever! laugh at this.. I´m upgrading form a Motorola Rokr em35 which i remember that i bought for $180 because it was a music player based phone that had a 3.5mm headphone jack! and now i bought the atrix with the lapdock for $250 on eBay.
Im just learning how to use the phone I´m hoping for some guidance on some things i should and shouldn't do!
first off.. My phone is blocked.. so Im thinking about buying an unlock code for about $2 since its blocked in my country (Dom. Rep.) ,, hows that about?
i want to learn all about the cool stuff i can do with the phone.
learn about custom roms and themes... Ive heard theres roms that are really optimized for the Atrix 4G and even overclocked!! but i dont want to loose the webtop ability?
I heard that you can make a partition on a micro sd and install a Full Ubuntu OS ... which im most exited about! even thought ive never used linux!
Luckily im into computers since I study computer science/engineering and these things shouldn't be hard for me to learn.
im really eager to get on to this stuff and I hope i can get somebody to guide and help me though all this! i hope this is the right place
Before doing any unlocking, or custom roms, etc. READ, RE-READ IT, THEN READ IT ALL AGAIN. until you understand what you are doing.
as for ubuntu ( linux ) on your phone, you said that you never used linux before. I would learn the basics with linux, on a computer, before slapping it on your phone and not understading the OS. But thats up to you. its just easier to learn it on a pc from start, rather than on a phone that you dont even understand yet.
No question here, is a dumb question, so ask away, ( just remember to search before asking so ya dont get the crap flammed out of ya )
once ya start learning linux, you will love it. its better than windows.
Good Luck!

as for ubuntu ( linux ) on your phone, you said that you never used linux before.
Good Luck!

thanks, I´ll read as much as I have to.. can you post me some good links on these sfuff.. but first i wanna unlock and root the phone. I seen vendors on ebay that provide you with an unlock code for your IMEI. should i do that¿
edit: btw i am familiar with ubuntus UI since Ive used it a few times but never had it personally for me so i dont now things like commands lines and that advanced stuff. i just like the idea of using the lapdock as a notebook and not being limited by the ROM/OS ... would be good for collage.

the wiki has most the guides, roms, and other stuff listed out, and its mostly up to date.. you should definitely read through the noob guide first because it has all the terminology you'll be seeing throughout the rest of the forums
If you want to keep your webtop the roms I would recommend are darkside or wetdream, both by Nottach..they have a ton of great features..of course there are others and I recommend you go through all of them and find whats right for you..just avoid cyanogen mod(CM7, CM9) based roms because they do not include webtop or any close alternative for now
Just remember, take your time on rooting and unlocking your bootloader, because you can really mess things up, but after that everything else should be pretty easy..
And don't worry too much about your rom selection, if you back everything up properly you should be able to switch roms in under an hour, so you can try out many different roms before settling on which one you like best(such a hard choice!)

thanks so much for being kind with this noob
It can't be overstated though. READ. I've been toying with my Atrix for a couple of months now, and came close to bricking my phone since I didn't read it all. By all I don't mean only posts about the developer, but problems people have encountered with their specific atrix model.
You've got to read a lot though.
The Atrix was my first Android and I have to say I couldn't be happier with the level of customisation you can get.

[Q] Bought a rooted and flashed Ntelos Photon

I bought a photon last week thats on Ntelos Frawg. so theres that... it works great, but its also rooted. i didnt do it, and dont know anything about rooting. ive been trying to look into it but its just not my thing. dont get it. sorry for being so nooby, but i didnt ask for it lol. anyway, how can i see whats already been done to it, and how can i know what could b done to it? the guy who sold it to me can do stuff to it. but i gotta know what i want him to do. please! any help will be appreciated.
Theres a free app in the market called "root checker" or something along those lines, its an easy way to check if you have root. You can tell if the bootloader is unlocked by looking at the top left corner of your screen when it is first booting, if it says "unlocked" then your bootloader is unlocked. It will show it while at the Moto dual core screen. I'd personally read up on rooting, unlocking, and all that goodstuff so you know what you have/can do. But basically root allows you to install apps that unleash androids true potential that you cant use without having root access, like free wifi tether, etc. Unlocking your bootloader allows you to install a new recovery(ClockworkMod usually) which then allows you to flash new ROMS and Kernels. I wont go into much depth there but it basically allows you to customize your phone how YOU want it to be, via Roms, Kernels, Themes, and all that. Currently with our Photon though you will lose Sprint 4g(Wimax) by unlocking the bootloader so if its important to you than you may not want to unlock the bootloader. Theres plenty of threads on XDA and other sites too that have loads on info on CWM, ROMS, Root, and everything. QBKing77 has a bunch of SUPER great Youtube videos for us Photon owners(and other phones) so be sure to look for those! If you have any more questions or anything feel free to PM me or post on the forums!

and make sure not to pay him for all these "awesome services". the tools are all here for free. i dont charge anyone for teh one click, theres no reason for anyone to charge others for it
@shabby i actually have your kernel and im totally satisfied, the only thing i really want right now is the slide to wake feature. Does it support it? And if not, im having a hard time finding one that does without losing stuff i do need. I guess it might only be for the evo right now?
Well i think anyway lol.

Cant speak for him, but im pretty sure whoever made the slide to wake feature hasnt released the source code yet, and without that the devs cant really do much but wait. Here is a link to the thread where people were discussing it for the Photon, im sure if/when we get it that this thread will be updated or a comment posted.

Rooting, unlocking first timer - did her homework now needs help!

So um, I posted this a few hours ago waaaaay up in the VERY general Q&A forum but now realize I can and should have put it here. So here goes:
I've read all the rules, terms, threats about what happens if you don't SEARCH first - guys I've done it all and for a long time. I have been studying up on how to root / flash my MoPhoton 4g since I got it last August. I think I'm finally ready....but now I'm afraid I'm too late. I got involved in that soak test, which installed 2.3.5. Now, if I've searched/read acs and xda correctly (and other less intelligent sites), here's where I think I am:
1. There is no way to downgrade from 2.3.5
2. Shabbypenguin's wonderfully simple and sweet One Click Root won't do the trick on 2.3.5 (and boy did I try it MANY times). Had correct drives installed, etc...but no go. I assume you guys know what I'm talking about, but I can and will paste what the script read if you need me too. Short story...got all the way to "you should have root"....but I don't.
3. Currently the only way to do it is with a root method called Torpedo....which I don't know enough about yet but I'm about to get into it... I am nervous though. Since I'm a rooting virgin I would MUCH prefer something easy like OCR.
4. And finally, even if I get root, I won't be able to unlock bootloader, again, because of 2.3.5. So no flashing anything at all (had been planning on cm7 or 9) to replace the stock OS.
Sound about right so far? If so, here's my big question:
If I can ONLY root for now, will I obtain ANY of the benefits I am looking for (mainly increasing/unleashing the SPEED I know this phone is capable of)? Also, I'd like to get free wireless hotspot too, cause if you're gonna dream, dream big.
2nd question: If all the above is correct (and I'm hoping it's not), are the odds decent that one of the geniuses around here will solve this bootloader problem sometime......soon?
Thanks in advance for any help guys!!

Yes, you are correct that you can root with photon-torpedo, but will not be able to unlock your bootloader, (for now). I just did it a little while back, and found that using terminal emulator didn't work on my phone, and had to push the .tar file in using the command prompt on my computer with the instructions I got from here.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. When you say "a little while back" you mean when exactly? Your link was an active thread 10 months ago but it's now abandoned and the links don't work. Not a big deal tho, I know where to find torpedo.
Any help out there from a senior member or mod? Most specifically about my last two questions...

Root will allow you to use root apps, access file systems, and yes let you use the free wifi hotspot. You could also clear out the bloatware that Sprint/Moto load your phone down with. It will NOT allow you to overclock(although you DO need root you also need a modified kernel which isn't possible with a locked bootloader) Rule here about bootloader unlock of 2.3.5 is don't ask for ETA's so it may be tomorrow or may never happen. Realistically im sure it will come eventually but can put no accurate time frame behind it. Torpedo is really a walk in the park, just read through instructions and follow them and it will take you no more than 10 min.
Torpedo Root, universal deblur/debloat and zepplinrox V6 supercharger. You may not get overclocking but your phone will be significantly faster/smoother than stock.
Awesome, thank you! Hope to report back soon with successful results.

You should be able to use the bootstrap recovery to flash a rom, this won't touch the kernel, so no over clocking, but i imagine that most of them are already debloated with the supercharger script (dont quote me on that one). So there are still ways to play around with a few of the roms here anyway.
Hope that helps.
