Boot into clockwork recovery.
go to backup and restore -create a backup of your current rom (Note:If already backup has been done then avoid this step, backup created using amonra or thunderg wont support restoring using clockwork)
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
wipe dalvik cache
mount and storage-format system
go to mount and storage-format sd card
advanced-partition sd card-choose 512 mb (preferable)or 1024 mb (it automatically creates ext 4 partition, class 6/4 is preferred)
mount and storage-mount usb storage (make sure usb debugging is enabled)
copy the rom zip file to the root of your sd card
unmount
install zip from sd card-choose the rom zip and install
flashing takes 3-5 min
reboot

This is where I am having problems. I was trying to flash openOptimus build 1.172.1 yesterday. I followed these instructions and looked over ciaox instructions and they were nearly identical.
Prior to yesterday I have RevOidOptT build with francos kernal 2.6.32.41.
I followed the instructions and booted into ClockworkMod Recovery. When I went to "select zip from SD card" nothing was there because I had wiped everything per the instruction. That makes sense to me since I had to "wipe data/factory reset". What am I doing wrong so I can flash over openOptimus??

'wipe data/factory reset' should wipe data present on the phone memory only. Not on the SD card. If the ROM is present on your SD card, then it should be available under the 'flash zip from SD card' menu.

Its cos you partitikned your sd card. It wipes it. Download onto a pc, mount usb under mounts and transfer over

If you followed those instructions then you would have formatted the sd card as well? Hence the zip file was deleted. Go to mounts>mount usb storage, connect your phone to pc, then copy the zip again.

Now this makes sense. Thank you all for helping me out. This never occurred to me. Another lesson learned. Im glad I had a copy of my SD card on my PC so I could start all over again.

After a bad flash my Vibrant is not seeing my internal sd card.
Is there a way to reformat?
Settings -> SD card and phone storage -> under phone storage select Format SD card.
Before you do that I would try flashing the mounting fix that was posted a while back in clockwork though. That might help.

The same thing...
Hitting Format SD card under the phone storage part of the screen will format the internal memory. If that doesnt work you should odin back to stock and reflash whatever ROM you want.
Formatting storage card does nothing.
Odin back to stock then reflash your ROM.

Already done that twice.
Hence my question.
Is there a way ie through adb to format the internal Sd/storage memory
This thread is relevant to my interests.
I have attempted to odin, and heimdall back to stock, but either the guide here on XDA is severely outdated, or something is wrong with my vibrant.m (followed steps to a T, but to no avail)
I am extremely technologically adept so anyone willing to talk me through this won't be assisting grandpa through a reformatting, and re-installation of the latest version of windoze operating system on their virus ridden store bought PC so to speak, but rather would be helping out a fellow modder restore his phone, and squeeze a few more months out of it before being forced to upgrade.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
//edit
obviously i can get into the bootloader, recovery, and download mode, but cannot load any rom because i get the error cannot write to lums message.
I too flashed probably once too many times, and something corrupted my internal SD card on my SGS Vibrant, and there's no way to reformat it that I know of.
Are you locked out of the internal SD ie the EU bug?
What ROM were you running when you tried Odin?
Does Odin recognize your device, do you have a lighted com port?
Which version of Odin did you try?
Which files did you plug in on Odin?
And have you tried the AIO toolbox?
No tickee, no laundry!
sorry I didn't see this reply earlier, but since my last posting I bit the bullet and upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy Note 2.
I would however like to see if I could still repair my vibrant for use as another android phone to play with. Odin, etc. all recognize and will flash my phone, but in cwm I can't flash any roms. I it says something about unable to write to lums?

Just wondering if anybody has had this issue before. I searched around a bit but haven't found a clear answer yet. After flashing a kernel through Kernel Manager Pro, the phone rebooted, checked sdcard as usual, then popped up that there was an error and sdcard was mounted as "read only". I had made a backup right before flashing the kernel like I usually do so I restored that backup but got the same error. I booted into recovery and wiped data and cache and so on and rebooted into android. No luck with that either, so I tried a backup of a different rom I had. Still the same issue (also wiped between restoring backups for good measure). Plugging it into the computer would work because it would not recognize the sdcard as a removable drive (had the "use as disk drive" option chose on my phone to clarify). Finally I had to boot into recovery, mount usb storage, right click on the drive that my phone was, and click "check and fix for errors". After a very long wait it finished and I unmounted usb storage and rebooted into android again. That finally fixed it (whew), and now I have a folder on my sdcard that is titled "FOUND.0000", and there are text files in it with names such as "FOUND.0000CHK, FOUND.0001CHK" and so on. Do I need these files anymore or is just showing me what was wrong and fixed on my sdcard? Will it cause any issues if I delete the folder? Sorry if all this is confusing or stupid. I just have never had an issue like this before and I have rooted and used quite a few android phones and tablets. Im not a noob but I definitely do not know that much about this kind of stuff so any help would be greatly appreciated! TIA

This is very interesting. I've never had a problem with the SD card. Is this the same SD card that shipped with the phone?
When you, "right click on the drive that my phone was, and click "check and fix for errors" is that a windows command? Does the picture below represent the action you took?

Did you end up deleting those files? If so, what happened?
I am having some weird errors with my SDcard myself. I went from a flashed kernel on CM7 off to another ROM. Rebooted and SDcard errors out the wazoo. I am getting MD5 mismatches on a lot of my backups at that. If I can get a ROM that fully boots, I will likely wipe the sdcard and start over to see if it isn't from a corrupt file or something.
The same exact thing happened to me. I mounted my SD card from recovery and windows auto fixed it.
If that didn't work I was going to wipe backup. wipe, and reformat.
hi guys
the one day i was using minicm7pro v21 with zp kernel
i switched to try flame.gdx ics did all the wipes but surprised that some of the apps still there and when i tried to update any i had to remove then reinstall

nothing works i always end up the same place , please please i need help
sm times i get " the package file is invalid " and others " insufficient storage available "

Hi everyone, seasons greeting's and all that
So, I have successfully rooted my phone (after lots of reading etc) with the SpeedMod kernel which IMHO makes my phone fly, quite impressed indeed.
I'm unfortunately a novice and I am having trouble installing a ROM, although it works perfectly well when I have to flash back to stock with odin.
I completed the required wipes as suggested is always performed when installing new ROMs. I placed the zip (tried this with CheckROM and Hyperdroid on numerous occasions) on the internal memory (external 2gb memory still in situ) and via CWM proceeded to "install zip from sdcard" and then "choose zip from internal sdcard", the flash process took all of 1.5mins which I thought was far too quick.
When prompted, I reboot the phone with the option on CWM and basically get stuck at the image in the pic below, even after waiting 30-60mins
Any help greatly appreciated as I am really keen on trying some great ROMs from some great devs.
Many Thanks, Rizur.

Are you selecting 'flash zip' or 'install zip from SD card' then selecting the file?
1.5 minutes also sounds about right.
Sent from my GT-I9100
Sorry, I am indeed selecting "install zip from sdcard" and then "choose zip from internal sdcard".
Get back into recovery and flash the file again, or restore a previous backup. Otherwise get into download mode and flash a rom that was specifically made to be flashed through odin, there's a few of them.
Cheers! I'm currently on stock with SpeedMod kernel, I may try and flash again or find those odin based ROMs you speak of.
flash a rom with odin like lighning to see if its working
I am currently on UltraToxic ROM, mainly because I'm struggling to flash via CWM.
All is well so far though so I'm happy
A clue ??
Copy custom rom zip xxxx .zip or whatever its called to internal sd card .
Boot to recovery cwm .
select Install zip from sd card .
choose zip from sd card or depending upon CWM version choose zip from internal sd card .
Navigate to named zip file xxxx.zip select then answer yes in the next window .
Should now install and boot .
If fails it would be worth checking your version of cwm and maybe even install a new cwm and root kernal or start over and wipe the phone .
Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware .Or need to return to service or decide if its hardware/firmware problem .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware .
followed by cwm and root
then your custom rom of choice .
jje
What I can say is these.
Turn off phone.
Enter cwm again.
Wipe everything.
Try reflash and it should work now.
Good luck!

Go to CWM > advanced > partition SD card and select ext & swap sizes (I did 1024M & 0M), but you can chose what you want (also make sure to wipe Dalvik cache).
